Woman hit by stray bullet at Texas NASCAR race: A NASCAR fan in her recreational vehicle at Texas Motor Speedway was wounded by a stray bullet after someone apparently fired a gun into the air, police said. A bullet suddenly pierced through the motor home’s roof Sunday morning before the Dickies 500 race, hitting a woman in the right arm, relatives said. “She immediately (screamed), ‘I’ve been shot. I’ve been shot.’ She took off running out the door,” her son-in-law Bobby Cook told Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT. The 62-year-old woman, whose name was not released by authorities, was taken to a nearby hospital with a “significant wound” and was listed in stable condition, police Lt. Paul Henderson said Monday. The bullet is believed to be a rifle round and appears to have been fired from a long distance because it penetrated the roof at a slight angle, Henderson said. He said he did not have information on whether investigators had any suspects. Some 40,000 fans in about 10,000 to 10,500 recreational vehicles camped at Texas Motor Speedway for the weekend’s races, said TMS spokesman Mike Zizzo, who declined to comment on the shooting.(Associated Press)(11-4-2008)
Jim Beam & Robby Gordon to Auction Authentic NASCAR Hood for Troops: As Veterans Day approaches, racing enthusiasts and philanthropists will have a chance to bid on a unique racing collectible while supporting America’s service members and their families. Robby Gordon Motorsports (RGM), in combined efforts with Jim Beam Bourbon, has kindly donated the special edition Jim Beam/ Operation Homefront race car hood to Operation Homefront for auction. RGM and Jim Beam created a special Operation Homefront paint scheme for the Richmond and New Hampshire Sprint Cup Series events in order to increase awareness of Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency assistance and morale to U.S. troops and their families. To celebrate Veterans Day, they will run this paint scheme once more in Phoenix and will increase their commitment by auctioning off the hood to help raise funds for the organization. Jim Beam, the world’s No. 1-selling bourbon, formed an association with Operation Homefront earlier this year when it recognized the organization had the same commitment and values as the Jim Beam brand – true character, integrity and doing the right thing. The hood, autographed by Robby Gordon, will be auctioned off on eBay starting November 4 with the auction closing Veterans Day, November 11, just in time for holiday gift giving.(GMR Marketing PR), see images of the scheme on my #7 Team Schemes page.(11-4-2008) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/7cup.htm

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Jeff Gordon got the pole Friday at Texas with a 188.469 mph lap. A tire issue caused Tony Stewart to crash during final practice and he started last in a backup Toyota. Sunday, Clint Bowyer passed Gordon for the lead on lap 16. Carl Edwards got to the front on lap 57 as the yellow waved for oil from Reed Sorenson's car. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to make an extra pit stop due to a loose wheel. Jimmie Johnson struggled with handling issues and fell a lap down to Edwards on lap 96. Edwards dominated throughout the middle portion of the 334-lap event. With 88 laps to go, Travis Kvapil had contact with another car and spun. The next yellow came when Juan Pablo Montoya and David Gilliland crashed. They had bumped a few times before the major impact. NASCAR parked Gilliland for his move. The leaders pitted, but Edwards came out seventh with four new tires, as others took just two new tires. Jamie McMurray assumed the lead. With 13 laps remaining, McMurray pitted for fuel, as did the other front runners. Earnhardt Jr. tried to stretch his gas mileage, but ran dry with five laps remaining and stalled. Edwards slowed and made it to the finish line. He averaged 144.219 mph with five yellows for 26 laps. He led 212 laps. McMurray finished third.

Post-race quotes from third-place finisher, #5 Mark Martin, in his final NNS outing for JR Motorsports of the year:"First I want to thank everyone with JR Motorsports. All of us that have driven the #5 have torn up race cars. We came right out of the gate in Vegas and got JR Motorsports there first win; but,I tore up 3 race cars in the first four races. We had a great run today; had a really fast car. we took two at the end there, which was a really great call. I knew if we could get ahead of the #20, #6 and #2; even if we took two tires, we still had a great race car. I knew we weren't going to catch the #18 who also took two tires." On racing in the #5 Cup entry for Hendricks in '09, "The #5 means a lot to me;it was Hendricks first Cup car. Funny how little things like that mean a lot to you. This Nationwide car brought Rick and I together,so that he decided to pursue me for the #5 Cup car. Once again, I want to thank JR Motorsports. I know they are going through a tough time, and laid off some people;I just want to thank them."(thehotlap-media center/tx) (11-03-08)

David Reutimann collected his 15th top-ten finish of the 2008 season after taking the checkered flag eighth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series O’Reilly Challenge at the Texas Motor Speedway. With two races remaining on the schedule, Reutimann looks to end the season solidly in the top-five in the drivers championship points race.Starting the 200-lap O’Reilly Challenge 19th, Reutimann steadily moved the No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine forward through the field during the first half of the event. Wanting more grip in the front tires so the car would be faster through the high-banked turns, crew chief Jerry Baxter ordered several chassis changes on his first three pit stops and improved the handling.Reutimann broke into the top-ten on lap119 and moved as high as seventh before reporting that the Dream Machine handled fine but felt “draggy” and lacked power going down the straightaways. As the laps wore down, Reutimann drove as hard as he could and managed a solid eighth place finish.“The Aaron’s Dream Machine was good there at the end of the race,” David stated after the event. “Jerry (Baxter) and the guys did a great job on the car and the pit stops were awesome, but it felt like we lost a little horsepower there at the end and I just couldn’t gain any more positions. All in all it was a decent day for us.”Reutimann maintains the sixth position in the driver points race and eighth in the owner points race with two races remaining on the 2008 Nationwide series schedule.Aaron’s will not be the primary sponsor on the No. 99 next week at Phoenix, but will return Nov. 15 for the season finale at the Homestead-Miami Speedway(SportsMarketing) (11-03-08)
Kenny Wallace will drive the #15 truck at Phoenix-“I ran St. Louis (Gateway International Raceway) for Billy Ballew Motorsports last year. I know they’ve got great equipment and great people. Phoenix (International Raceway) has always been a favorite track of mine, so when I got the call from Billy, and he said ‘Herm, you want to go truck racing?’ I jumped on it. “Not many people know it, but a lot of the guys at Billy Ballew Motorsports used to work on my old Nationwide team. Back when I was winning races in that series, Richie Wauters and a bunch of his crew were on my team. I’m the innovator of those guys! They’ve won a ton of races since then and I’m real proud of what they’ve accomplished. So any time I get to race for Billy, I feel like I’m coming home and driving for my guys again. Let’s hope we can repeat our magic with the Ergon truck this weekend!” (Ergon Racing) (11-03-08)

Ron Hornaday Jr. got his series-high sixth victory of the season in Friday night’s Chevy Silverado 350k at Texas. He finished .957 second up on Kyle Busch’s Toyota. Hornaday’s Chevrolet got a lap down when it was in the pits when the yellow flag came out. A transporter fire while en route to Texas damaged Busch’s Tundra and pit equipment. Johnny Benson passed Todd Bodine for third place on the last lap and thus held on to a six-point margin over Hornaday with two events to go. Hornaday, who led 45 of the 147 laps, averaged 126.220 mph with five cautions for 26 laps. Paul Tracy was 20th in his Truck debut.

TV Peek At NASCAR’s Future Is Eye-Opening
The TV series on SPEED called NASCAR Confidential would have gotten the attention of the NASCAR fans this season if the network had ordered more than six episodes. Tucked quietly away on Monday night, the fifth show in the series offered a profile of several young drivers with NASCAR aspirations. To say the least, it was an eye-opening confirmation that family money is the driving force behind this new breed.

Chad Knaus Watches His Pain Again
Host Steve Byrnes did his best to make it as pleasant as possible, but there was no way for Chad Knaus to escape it. In his new role as a panelist on This Week In NASCAR, Knaus gets to watch the Sprint Cup Series highlights and offer his veteran comments.

Bestwick Reminds TV Viewers The Chase Is Not Over
All season long on both the ESPN Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series TV coverage viewers have heard the same message from the Infield Pit Studio. The source of the message was host Allen Bestwick. His favorite expression is borrowed directly from Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra.

A Great Idea At The Perfect Time
The Craftsman Truck Series race on Friday night from Texas contained a little surprise for viewers. The entire pre-race show was done with all the SPEED announcers completely in Halloween costumes. Needless to say, watching Dorothy and Glinda the Good Witch interview tough guys like Ron Hornaday Jr., Todd Bodine and Max Papis was one of the most hilarious moments on NASCAR TV this season.

Good, Bad, & Ugly – The Fat Lady Will Have To Wait Another Week Before She Can Warble – by Ron Thornton
It might have been a boring race visually for the most part, but there was no shortage of GOOD storylines at Texas. Jimmie Johnson was caught a lap down early, and we wondered if there was going to be another late race resurrection like there was the week before

Edwards Closes With Another Brave Move – by Ron Fleshman
If there is one thing even the most jaded NASCAR Sprint Cup fan has to admit, it’s that Carl Edwards and his crew chief Bob Osborne are gamblers.

It’s Time for David Gilliland to Exit Nascar – by Joe Dunn
Carl Edwards claimed a fuel mileage win at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday and took a big chunk out of Jimmie Johnson’s lead, reducing it to 106 points. But that lead would have been cut even further had it not been for the actions of David Gilliland, who pulled what was undoubtedly the biggest boneheaded move of the season.
