NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series losing Dodge?
by: Chuck Abrams

It was a sad day when Dodge and then Ford announced their decision to pull out of the Craftsman Truck Series in 2009. While Dodge is out entirely, Ford remains committed to supplying at least technical support and engineering, just no financial support. Read the rest at motorsportsnews.net/archives/2155

Edwards Wins At Texas

CIA Stock Photo
Edwards Celebrates Victory in Texas
While everyone was stopping for fuel in the waning moments of the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Carl Edwards and Crew Chief Bob Osborne gambled using a gas mileage strategy to make it 69 laps (103 miles) on a tank of gas. The trick was to just go half throttle — he had a big lead anyway because everyone else was pitting. It worked, much to the team’s surprise, Edwards picked up his seventh victory this year and the 15th of his 155 race career. “First Bob said, ‘We’re two-tenths of a lap short, so conserve.’ Then he came back and said, ‘No, we’re four laps short, just go real hard and we’ll pit.’ Then he came back again and said, ‘We’ll conserve.’ So just by all that I kind of knew that he wasn’t too sure about it, but I’m really glad it worked out,” said Edwards. “It’s unreal. It’s a great day. The fans are awesome. My guys are awesome. We’re closing ground on Jimmie, that’s cool.”

Jeff Gordon, who started on the pole fell a lap down and was able to make it up. He also was using the same fuel strategy that Edwards was using and finished 12 seconds behind Edwards in second place. “That Lucky Dog really played in our favor because we able to roll around there quite a few laps and come in later and top off, I conserved a little bit under yellow,” said Gordon. “When they said we were one lap short, I really wasn’t that worried. I was still letting off real early. We didn’t know the No. 99 was going to go for it, obviously a great call by Steve Letarte on the DuPont/Nicorette Chevrolet.”

Jamie McMurray finished third and Clint Bowyer was fourth. Greg Biffle brought his Ford home in fifth place followed by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Martin Truex Jr. and David Reutimann to round out the top ten. Points leader Jimmie Johnson went into the race leading by 183 points but when Johnson finished 15th, one lap down, Edwards was able to slash 77 off of Johnson’s lead, to 106 points. “There are two races left,” said Johnson. I have known all along we were going to have to fight every week for this thing. We had a nice big points lead and we still have a great points lead, but in racing anything can happen and usually does. Today didn’t go our way; it went the way the No. 99 needed, the No. 16 and those guys.”

The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the ninth race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the November 9th, Checker Auto Parts 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. The race begins at 3:30 p.m. ET with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 3:00 p.m. eastern time. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and PRN radio.

Busch Will Donate $100,000 To Sam Ard
Kyle Busch dedicated the Saturday’s Nationwide Series win to Sam Ard and then vowed to give Ard $100,000. Ard has been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and has been strapped financially. “Sam Ard was one of the pioneers of the sport and this really means a lot to me,” Busch said after his famous victory bow to the crowd. “I got to thinking about it and I decided I’m going give him $100,000 to try to help him out.” — Busch had met Ard just one time. “He came to a race — I think it was maybe Homestead. (NASCAR) had some champions there of the past years there and when Sam was there I shook his hand and said hello to him and (told him) what he means to this sport,” Busch said. “That was about the only time I’ve had to interact with him. I know his record of 10 wins and I know what he’s done for the sport, I know what all that is and how he’s built the Nationwide Series. His name is one of the lead names you look at along with (Tommy) Houston, (Mark) Martin and (Tommy) Ellis and all those guys. It’s a pretty cool list of names to look at and see who’s built this series.

Bigger Wheel May Take Years
A lot of talk in the garage has been about the possibility of Goodyear introducing a larger, wider tire to better handle the loads this car creates and improve handling. Well, don’t expect it any time soon. “It’s a science project that we’re involved in with Goodyear,” said John Darby, Sprint Cup series director. “Obviously, a change that major would probably never see a race track for five years.” — Five years? — Darby said such a change to the tires would require major changes elsehwere: “You’ve got tire technology, you’ve got wheel manufacturers, you’ve got brake manufacturers. It’s just so many components on something like that that it would be as big a change as when we left bias-ply and went to radial tires.”

Earnhardt Rips NASCAR
Dale Earnhardt Jr. went from race car driver to philosopher Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. And in the process, stock car racing’s favorite son likely ruffled quite a few feathers in NASCAR’s front office. In one of his most poignant interviews ever, Earnhardt confirmed what a lot of people – most notably disenchanted or former NASCAR fans – have been thinking for a long time. Namely, NASCAR has grown too big, the season is too long and the watered-down result, particularly the Chase for the Sprint Cup, is hurting the sport dramatically, with potentially even more damage to come as the world remains in economic crisis. With rumors swirling that current Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series teams will lay off close to 1,000 employees at season’s end, as well as reports that several teams across the sport’s top three series are likely to close their doors or merge with others, this is one of the most challenging times NASCAR has ever faced. In a year that the sanctioning body was supposed to get back to its roots, it may be time for NASCAR to take an even longer, harder look at itself, Earnhardt said.

Edwards wins at Texas: #99-Carl Edwards won the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway for his 8th win of the season and the 15th of his career and swept both Texas races this year.He took a fuel mileage gamble, running the final 69 laps of the race without pitting. #24-Gordon finished second, also gambling on fuel. #26-McMurray was third followed by #07-Bowyer, #16-Biffle, #18-Busch, #29-Harvick, #1-Truex, Jr., #17-Kenseth, and #44-Reutimann. Point leader #48-Johnson struggled through much of the race, finishing a lap down in 15th.There were 5 cautions for 26 laps and 16 lead changes among 9 leaders.

Johnson needs to average 7th to clich championship: Gutsy strategy earned Carl Edwards the win at the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, and made it difficult for points leader Jimmie Johnson to clinch at Phoenix. Edwards’ victory slashed his deficit to Johnson, who finished 15th, by 77 – from 183 to 106. Johnson needs to leave Phoenix with a 196-point lead over second-place to officially clinch his third consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. In other words, Johnson must beat Edwards by 90 points and third-place Greg Biffle by 52 at Phoenix to clinch (Johnson needs to finish 195 points ahead of Biffle to clinch because he owns the tie-breaker). Jeff Burton, 212 points back in fourth place, can also spoil Johnson’s clinch hopes by getting within that 195-point “magic number.” If Johnson leaves Phoenix with a 162-point lead, he would need only to start the season-finale at Homestead to clinch a championship. Under this scenario, Johnson has to beat Edwards by 56 and Biffle by 18. If Johnson finishes seventh or better in the next two races, he will clinch the title, no matter what any other driver does.(NASCAR PR)(11-2-2008)

NASCAR Now Monday Roundtable Discussion: The Monday, Nov. 3, edition of NASCAR Now, ESPN2’s daily NASCAR news and information show, at 5pm/et is scheduled to feature host Allen Bestwick leading a roundtable discussion of the latest NASCAR news and races. Panel members scheduled to include ESPN NASCAR analysts Ray Evernham and Boris Said and ESPN pit reporter Mike Massaro.

Hutchens has offer from Stewart Haas: Longtime Richard Childress Racing team executive Bobby Hutchens confirmed Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway that he has a contract offer to become general manager at Stewart Haas Racing. “I have an opportunity with Stewart Haas,” Hutchens said as he walked through the garage toward pit road prior to the Dickies 500. “I’ll make a decision here in a couple days.” Several sources close to SHR, Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt, Inc. — Hutchens’ current employer — told ESPN.com that Hutchens had already signed a contract with Stewart Haas, but Hutchens said otherwise. “Nothing is signed,” Hutchens said.(ESPN.com)(11-3-2008)

Hornish back to Indy Cars? Though #77-Sam Hornish Jr. again finished ahead of fellow rookie of the year contender #01-Regan Smith, padding his lead in the ROTY standings, rumors continue to swirl that Hornish Jr. could be headed back to Indy Cars next season.(Yahoo Sports)(11-3-2008)

No further penalty for Gilliland: #38-David Gilliland swore that he didn’t mean to tag #42-Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 263 of the Dickies 500, but that didn’t mean that NASCAR didn’t penalize him. NASCAR parked Gilliland after the accident, which left Montoya fuming and with a torn-up race car. Gilliland didn’t tear up his race car, but NASCAR sat him for the rest of the race leaving him in 42nd while Montoya was 43rd. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby said there will be no further penalties although both drivers likely will be talked to again prior to practice at Phoenix informing them not to keep the feud going on the race track.(Scene Daily)(11-3-2008)

Bruton Smith reaffirms desire to buy NASCAR: Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman Bruton Smith gave his opinion on several pressing subjects [Sunday morning], including his long-standing desire to purchase NASCAR from the France family if the opportunity ever presented itself. “I stand by that,” he said. “And it’s getting closer.” For the record, the France family has given no indication of having any desires to sell the sanctioning body that patriarch Bill France Sr. founded 60 years ago.But Smith always likes to stir the pot and get people talking.(ESPN.com)

NASCAR to honor past champions at Homestead: Legends throughout NASCAR’s 60-year history will help crown the 2008 Sprint Cup Series champion during Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Champions scheduled to appear include Bobby Allison, Kurt Busch, Ned Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip, and Rex White. Other past champions, including those competing in the Ford 400, will also be honored during the pre-race ceremony.(NASCAR PR)(11-3-2008)

All repeat winners at Texas: It proved to be a Texas Trifecta this weekend. Every winner this past spring also won this weekend. On Friday, Ron Hornaday Jr. won the Craftsman Truck Series race. On Saturday, Kyle Busch won the Nationwide Series race. Edwards capped it off with Sunday’s win.(Fort Worth Star-Telegram)(11-3-2008)

Testing changes to be announced soon? UPDATE 3: John Darby, Sprint Cup series director, spoke with the media at Texas on Saturday:
Q: WHAT KIND OF A RESPONSE ARE YOU GETTING FROM TEAMS ON A TESTING POLICY FOR NEXT YEAR? IT SOUNDS LIKE THE TARGET NUMBER IS 12-16 DAYS NEXT YEAR.
DARBY: “I think you’ve got to look from when we started talking about testing back in June and everything that has happened up to today. The very first meeting in New Hampshire in June, it was guys we can do zero or we can make it wide open. Everybody went Aaargh! And they came back with all the different versions and a month later we kind of settled in on like 24 days. Now we’re in early July and that’s when Wall Street started going wham. And more importantly the teams within the last couple of weeks have got their planner boards out and started penciling in their 24 days and stood back and said, ‘Holy Cow, how are we going to do this?’ First of all, the test policy is probably the most team-controlled policy that NASCAR has. In other words, we’re pretty much just the organizers and managers of it. We’ll give the garage, for the most part, what they want. But this is a year in looking at ‘09 where zero isn’t completely off the radar. It may be just to help the industry. I think we’re pretty secure in the fact that 24 days is too much… if you’ve got zero here and our original 24-day plan, the likelihood of landing somewhere in the middle is pretty good. Testing is a year-by-year deal. Let’s say it was nothing, it maybe for only ‘09. Everything starts coming back, looking ahead to ‘10, we might get it back. That’s the most fluid policy we have. Something changes on it every year.(Roanoke Times)(11-2-2008)

Riggs still looking for ride: Scott Riggs, who is out of the #66 after the season, says he’s unsure when he’ll get another Cup deal. He says he continues to talk to teams but the issue is that teams are looking for sponsorship and until they have sponsors they’re not making as many moves for drivers.(Roanoke Times)(11-1-2008)

Casey Mears to remain in the #5 through end of season: Although a switch for the Sprint Cup finale at Homestead-Miami was discussed, Casey Mears will remain in the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy while Mark Martin will sit on the sideline. There were discussions about Mears driving for RCR with Martin going into the Hendrick car for the finale so they could get a head start on next season, Mears and Martin said last Sunday. But Hendrick Motorsports has opted to just keep Mears in the car, Hendrick spokesman Jesse Essex said Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.(Scene Daily)

Fuel-Mileage Gamble Pays Off for Edwards
Carl Edwards spent the past week insisting the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup isn’t over. Maybe he’s right. Squeezing 70 laps out of his last tank of fuel at 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, Edwards slowed his speed to a relative crawl in the closing laps of Sunday’s Dickies 500 and rolled across the finish line 8.31 seconds ahead of Jeff Gordon, who also stretched his fuel mileage. Edwards trimmed 77 points off championship leader Jimmie Johnson’s advantage with two races left in the Chase. Edwards trails Johnson by 106 points as the Cup series heads to Phoenix, where Johnson has won the past two races.

Darnell expected to move to Nationwide in 2009; Full time for Edwards, not for Ragan: Darnell is scheduled to run just 15 races – less than half of the schedule. Unlike the last three years in trucks, Darnell won’t be competing for a drivers championship. He also doesn’t know which 15 races he will drive.(Scene Daily)(11-2-2008)

No changes to Nationwide points system next year: NASCAR gave me [Terry Blount] a little news this week that the Nationwide points system will not change in 2009. One year ago, NASCAR officials floated one of its infamous trial balloons about the possibility of changing the system to keep Cup regulars from earning points in the feeder league. The proposed plan was this: Any Cup driver ranked in the top 35 in the Cup standings would not earn points for a Nationwide event. The idea was to ensure that a Nationwide-only driver win the series championship without excluding or limiting Cup drivers from participated in Nationwide events. But NASCAR officials said Tuesday they have no plans to change the points format for 2009.(ESPN.com)(10-31-2008)

Driver results for those NNS drivers running in the Cup event at Texas-Brad Keselowski, in his Sprint Cup debut in the #25 for Hendrick, finished 19th today. Joey Logano, in the #02 JGR entry, finished 40th. Bryan Clauson, in the #40, failed to qualify; Max Papis, in the #13 Sprint Cup debut for Germain Racing also failed to qualify for today’s race. (thehotlap)

Post-race quotes from Carl Edwards-finished second: TALK ABOUT THOSE LAST COUPLE OF LAPS. “Yeah, we got four tires and that gave us a chance against the 18. Those guys were really fast all day. My crew chief Drew Blickensderfer did a really great job. He made really, really good calls. Our car was great. We needed about two more laps with the way everything was working out and I think we would have been really close to catching Kyle, but definitely they did a great job today. Their car was spectacular.” DID YOU THINK YOU HAD A BETTER CAR THAN CLINT ALL DAY? “I felt like Clint and I had very equal cars. I felt like we were about the same speed. When I was in front of him I could stay that way and when he was in front of me, vice versa. It’s wild that we picked up so many points on him. I thought that we were going to run right there together and at the end I actually thought that he was going to finish in front of us. But the way traffic worked out and everything got mixed up, we got around him and my car was really fast. That’s good. I think we’ve got 91 points to make up in two races, which is completely reasonable. So, I’m very excited about that.DO YOU FEEL THAT IN PHOENIX AND HOMESTEAD IN THE NATIONWIDE CAR ARE GOOD TRACKS FOR YOU? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU NEED TO DO IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS? “I feel like Phoenix and Homestead both are really good tracks. The thing about Homestead is that these mile-and-a-halves with these cars with the tapered spacer, it’s really hard to get out and separate yourself from someone and make something happen. The one I’m most excited about is Phoenix. I feel like our flat track, short track stuff has been really good. Milwaukee was great, Richmond, Gateway, I don’t know where else we ran. Every time it seems like we go to a shorter race track it’s good. Phoenix is the one I’m looking forward to the most in the Nationwide Series.”(FordRacing) (11-01-08)

Post-race quotes from KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Farm Bureau Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finished: 1st Can you talk about your run today? “It was a strong car all day and it kind of set the tone. We had a good race car yesterday when we were practicing it. It felt good, it had speed but the balance wasn’t quite there so we were working on it. Joel (Weidman, crew chief) did some good calls in practice trying to get it right and we made it to where it was really good today off the bat. It sort of got loose a little bit through the race and tightened it up some with some adjustments there. Fortunately for us we were up front all day and didn’t have to mire through much traffic but I still feel like our car was good enough to do so. (Jeff) Dickerson (spotter) made a good call and that slow car that brought out that caution that caught (Kevin) Harvick in the pits, he saved us there. Luckily we had enough gas to make it back to pit road. That was our saving grace and it was pretty much smooth sailing from there. The two tires on the last stop was my call, Joel wanted four and by being a rookie crew chief I had to over step him one time here, go me, that’s the first time I’ve won myself one. I’m proud of myself for that. Joel did a great job believing in me with that and bumping up the air pressures there to go at it at the end of the race. Luckily we hung on for enough there and beat out Carl.” What does this win mean to you? “It means a whole lot. Sam Ard is one of the pioneers of this deal and to be tied with him at 10 wins is something that’s pretty spectacular and really, really special to me. He’s in Florence, South Carolina with his wife Jo with Alzheimer’s and I just want to say ‘hey’ to him. I told myself during this race that I knew he had health issues and stuff like that and I’m going to go ahead and give him 100,000 dollars and I’m going to try to help him out and see what I can do. It’s not much but it’s something that can try to help cure him and everything he’s going through. I’ve got to thank Farm Bureau Insurance and Toyota and all of these guys and the fans for coming out. These guys are just awesome man, I don’t know what else to say. It’s been a dream year and Joel Weidman (crew chief) who come on board has done a phenomenal job and Jason (Ratcliff) back at home gives us a great race car every week.” Was Carl Edwards gaining on you down the stretch or were you just pacing yourself? “No, that was it. That was all she wrote, man. My tongue is hanging out. Last night it was my trucks tongue who was hanging out and tonight it’s mine. Phenomenal race car. Great job by all these guys on this Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota. It was just great all day. We had a stretch there where we got a little bit loose, made some adjustments on it and got it back to where it was handling really well. (Kevin) Harvick there, he had a really good car and unfortunately he had his pit stop deal and Carl (Edwards) of course, he had a great car too, but had tires there at the end. Caught up to us a little bit but man, fortunately for us we were able to hang on there. This is a record-setting day for myself and Sam Ard. Have you ever met Sam Ard? “He came to a race — I think it was maybe Homestead. (NASCAR) had some champions there of the past years there and when Sam was there I shook his hand and said hello to him and what he means to this sport. That was about the only time I’ve had to interact with him. I know his record of 10 wins and I know what he’s done for the sport, I know what all that is and how he’s built the Nationwide Series. His name is one of the lead names you look at along with (Tommy) Houston, (Mark) Martin and (Tommy) Ellis and all those guys. It’s a pretty cool list of names to look at and see who’s built this series.” (ToyotaRacing)

Hornaday wins at Texas: For the second time this season, #33-Ron Hornaday was first to cross the finish line at Texas Motor Speedway to pick up the win for the Chevy Silverado 350. Caught on pit road when a caution came out on lap 58, Hornaday restarted from the tail end of the lead lap, almost going a lap down, but battled back to the lead to get the win and is now just six points behind Benson in the driver point standings. This is Hornaday’s sixth win this season; his 39th overall. The first caution came out on lap two when the #2 of Cale Gale struggled and spun. Several trucks were caught up in the melee including pole-sitter #14 Rick Crawford. The #21 of Jon Wood & #7-T.J. Bell sustained heavy damage, sending both to the garage for the night. Rounding out the top ten were; #51-Kyle Busch, #23-Johnny Benson, #30-Todd Bodine, #6-Colin Braun, #59-Terry Cook, #09-Travis Kvapil, #5-Mike Skinner, #16-Brian Scott, #22-Scott Speed. Sprague not returning to #60 in ‘09? UPDATE: Unsure of future plans: During an interview with SPEED/TV’s Ray Dunlap, Jack Sprague said he would not be returning to the #60 in 2009. Sprague also said that Wyler Racing is searching for sponsorship, and he would do everything he could to help keep Wyler Racing in the sport whether he was in or out of the truck.(10-24-2008)
UPDATE: Sprague, who reunited with Wyler Racing last month after being released as driver of the #2 truck at Kevin Harvick Inc., plans to run the final two races of 2008 with his current group. Beyond that, he’s not sure of his plans. Like so many truck teams, Wyler is searching for a full-time primary sponsor for its #60 “I have no idea,” Sprague said when asked if he could drive for the team beyond 2008. “I mean, if they got sponsorship obviously we continue on but things are pretty tough. Hopefully, we can find something to keep them in racing regardless of if I drive it or not but my main goal is to keep the Wylers in it because NASCAR needs owners like this - there’s no doubt about it. They’re absolutely wonderful people and they enjoy the sport. Hopefully, we can get something put together with an up-and-comer that has some money or something to keep this team going. Sprague has made at least two starts in every truck season since the series started in 1995. In all but one of those years - 2003 - he ran the full schedule. (SceneDaily.com)(11-2-2008)

Peters & Premier Racing plan 8-10 races UPDATE 2 To Toyota starting wth Homestead: Hearing that Premier Racing is already in the process of switching their manufacturer from Dodge to Toyota and will be running a Toyota at Homestead-Miami Speedway in two weeks.(11-2-2008)

KHI plans to run three trucks at Homestead; Newman in the #2, Harvick in another: From Team Chevy’s Post Race Notes & Quotes:
KEVIN- What is the plan for the #2 truck for the rest of the season? “Ryan (Newman) is going to run the #2 at Homestead and I will run the truck at Phoenix and Homestead, or one of the trucks. For the most part, we are going to race the next two weeks.
HORNADAY INTERJECTS - If you are going to run one and he is going to run one, where does that leave me?
KEVIN - “That means we will have three.(Team Chevy PR)(11-1-2008)

Toyota clinches manufacturers title: Toyota clinched its third consecutive NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series manufacturer’s championship Friday at Texas Motor Speedway when Kyle Busch crossed the finish line second in his #51 Tundra — enabling Toyota to take home another title with two races remaining in the 2008 season. It marks the fourth manufacturer’s title for Toyota since becoming a participant in NASCAR’s upper levels of competition in 2004. Seven teams have campaigned Toyota Tundras in 2008 — Bill Davis Racing, Billy Ballew Motorsports, Germain Racing, HT Motorsports, Red Horse Racing, Wyler Racing and Xpress Motorsports — combining for 12 wins, 54 top-five finishes and 105 top-10 results in 23 races. In addition, Tundra drivers captured 10 poles and led 1,756 laps in NCTS competition this season. Bill Davis Racing (BDR) and Billy Ballew Motorsports (BBM) led the Tundra contingent in 2008, winning 10 of 12 races for Toyota. BDR drivers have combined for seven of the 12 victories, with Johnny Benson winning five times (Milwaukee, Kentucky, Indianapolis, Nashville and Martinsville),and Mike Skinner (Las Vegas) and Scott Speed (Dover) each recording one win. Busch won three races (California, Atlanta and Bristol) for BBM, and Bodine — driving for Germain Racing — won the superspeedway events at Daytona and Talladega.(Toyota Motorsports PR)(11-1-2008)

Lawyler to #15 in ‘09? During the race broadcast Adam Alexander reported that Ryan Lawler is looking for sponsorship with plans to run either a full or partial schedule in the #15-Toyota for Billy Ballew Motorsports in 2009.(10-31-2008)

Ron Hornaday Jr. flashed the form that’s made him a three-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, dominating the final 50 laps of the Chevrolet Silverado 350K to win his second NCTS race at Texas Motor Speedway and sixth overall this season. In the process, Hornaday cut the points lead he’s been trading back and forth all season with Johnny Benson, who finished the Halloween night third in the race. With just two races to go in the Truck season, Benson now leads Hornaday by just 6 points. Finishing second behind Hornaday was Kyle Busch’s Miccosukee Resorts Toyota Tundra, followed by Benson, who made a last-lap pass of Todd Bodine’s Lumber Liquidators Toyota. Completing the top five was the Con-Way Freight Ford F-150 of Colin Braun.

Clay Rogers Wins Wild One at “The Rock”
By Paul Warner

Benny Gordon claims overall title; Drew Herring takes rookie of the year

Rockingham, N.C.-Rockingham Speedway has seen its fair share of exciting finishes in the past. Well, add the finish of Mark Brooks Memorial Black’s Tire American 200 to the list of memorable moments at “The Rock.”

Rookie Drew Herring blasted by Benny Gordon with 20 laps remaining and was pulling away for his first Hooters Pro Cup win before catching lapped traffic with seven laps remaining. Herring had to check up, allowing Rogers to swing by to take the lead and hold on for the win on Saturday, Nov. 1.

“This is a pretty emotional win,” said Rogers, who took home $12,000 for the win. “I’ve won a race every year in my career since 1989, and it didn’t look like it was going to happen this year the way our luck was going lately.

“I thought our car was as good as Drew’s, but we got tight when I got up to him. It looked like the lapped cars were racing ahead of him and he caught them at the wrong time. I’ve had it happen to me. Sometimes it just happens that way. He had the momentum taken away, and I didn’t have to slow down. Once we got out front, I was just concentrating on protecting the bottom.”

The Nascar Insiders
What $20 Million Won’t Buy You
As we close in on the end of the 2008 season and look ahead to 2009, the sponsor landscape for the Cup Series will be vastly different next season. Some sponsors have left the sport completely, while many have moved from one team to another. One sponsor move in particular stands out to me, and I think it illustrates an interesting problem in the sport today.

Sputtering To The Finish Line
Jimmie Johnson threw a wrench into the best-laid plans of the ESPN on ABC bunch. Once Johnson got down a lap and did not immediately race back into contention, the Texas Sprint Cup Series telecast began to sputter. It never recovered.

Anyone remember Tony Stewart? The former Sprint Cup Series champion, new team owner and 2008 Chaser has been a personality noticeably absent from the NASCAR on ABC coverage for some time now.

Stewart does not suffer fools easily and this season the ABC pit reporters have often eagerly stepped-up to that role. Comprised of a mix of veterans and relative newcomers, the four pit reporters covering The Chase for the Championship are in some of the most high-profile sports TV positions in the nation.
