Tough Times Ahead For NASCAR
If a recent quarterly report by International Speedway Corp. serves as an industry bellwether, expect tough times ahead for NASCAR in 2009. At the same time a number of race teams are mulling mergers with rival shops and scrambling to find scarce corporate sponsorship dollars, Daytona-based ISC recently told stock analysts that it expects revenue to fall by 3 percent while earnings decline by 5 to 10 percent next year. With the company’s tracks controlling more than half of all Sprint Cup race dates, the forecast offers the latest evidence of how the national economic malaise impacts the stock-car circuit. The problems are straightforward: Companies pinched by credit markets, higher costs and other worries have grown leery of spending millions on advertising — in NASCAR or elsewhere. Those that do elect to move ahead with hefty marketing investments take a lot longer to make a decision, sending ripple effects of uncertainty coursing through speedways, race teams and others in the industry. In recent months, the ISC tracks have begun to see corporations cutting back on the amount spent entertaining clients at NASCAR races. Fans, now preoccupied by fears of job security, higher grocery bills and other financial pressures, may decide to skip races and watch on TV instead.

NASCAR nixes GEM’s move to Toyota? UPDATE: Gillett-Evernham Motorsports has been in talks with nearly every possible team in the garage area looking to merge including Bill Davis Racing, which is down to a one car, non-sponsored team since Caterpillar is leaving the #22 for Richard Childress Racing. From what I [Pete Pistone] have been able to gather, the report that NASCAR vetoed a GEM-BDR merger and a complete switch to Toyota is false. The stumbling block in all of this is the status of Dodge and Chrysler and the future of the struggling company. If the manufacturer can’t live up to its promise of supplying engines and support to GEM, its flagship Cup organization, the team needs to know that and make a move ASAP. But whether Toyota wants to support another team and a possible additional three cars is another question. Regardless, NASCAR has no say in what the teams and manufacturers decide to do.(CBS Sports)(10-31-2008)
Final Atlanta TV Ratings down: ABC’s coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earned a final national rating of 3.6, down from the 4.0 the race earned last year when it also was telecast on ABC. The race averaged 5,611,102 viewers. Ratings for the Chase for the Sprint Cup on ABC are even with last year at an average of 3.8 through seven races.(ESPN),
Texas Goodyear Tire Notes: Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same tire codes at Texas this weekend, though those for the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be branded “Goodyear Eagle,” while those for the Truck Series will be branded “Goodyear Wrangler” . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Goodyear brought for teams to run at Texas earlier this season — Cup and Nationwide in April and Truck in June . . . in addition to Texas, NASCAR teams have run this specific tire combination at Chicagoland earlier this summer . . . teams in all three of these series will run this set-up again at Homestead in two weeks . . . this left-side tire code (D-4134) has also been run with a different right-side code at Dover, Michigan and Kentucky in 2008 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams will are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Texas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. See codes, pressures and more on my Texas Race Info Page.(10-31-2008) http://www.jayski.com/next/2008/34tms2008.htm
Camo scheme for Martin at Texas: Mark Martin will run a special camouflage paint scheme on the #8 U.S. Army DEI Chevy in the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway to promotes effort to deliver more than one million holiday greetings to U.S. Military worldwide. In keeping with the VAULT motto, “Get It Done. And Then Some.,” Coca-Cola North America is implementing the largest marketing campaign for the brand since its 2006 launch to ensure the program’s success. The VAULT “Honoring the Uniform: Calling for Support” initiative features an exclusive opportunity for people across the country to send hand-written postcards to troops worldwide and raise up to $100,000 for the USO. People are encouraged to write messages of support on pre-addressed postcards, which can be found on special camouflage-themed VAULT 12-packs, at VAULT displays in participating retail stores or online at DrinkVault.com and MyCokeRewards.com, while supplies last. The postcards can be dropped in the mail with a first-class stamp and will arrive at a USO collection center for security screening before being distributed to U.S. troops during the holiday season.(Markmartin.com)(10-31-2008)

Team Rensi Motorsports will run the rest of the Nationwide Series season after driver Bobby Hamilton Jr. put up the money for the team to compete in the final three races, team president Ronnie Russell said Thursday afternoon. The team’s sponsorship had run out for this year, and Smithfield Foods has already indicated it would not return next year. “He’s actually funding this out of his own pocket,” Russell said in the Texas Motor Speedway garage. “We’ve got several things going on and he’s taking the chance to where we keep racing long enough to where we can seal something up here [for next year].”(Scene Daily)(10-31-2008)

Marcos Ambrose (No. 59 Kingsford Tailgate at Home Ford) is 10th in the standings, holding the final ticket for NASCAR Nationwide Series Awards Banquet in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 22.But David Stremme (No. 64 Loan Star Title Loans Chevrolet), who’s 11th and series ironman Jason Keller (No. 27 Kleenex Ford), 12th, continue to put pressure on Ambrose for the coveted final slot.If recent history is any indication though, Ambrose needs to keep pushing despite a 112-point advantage over Stremme and a 146- point cushion on Keller.Last season Mike Wallace (No 7 GEICO Toyota) was in the same situation as Ambrose with three races to go. He sported a 102-point lead over Matt Kenseth. But Kenseth overcame Wallace in the final three events to make up the difference and take over the 10th spot at season’s end.Can Stremme or Keller do the same? Ambrose has three starts at Texas with a career-best finish of 18th earlier this year. He’s posted one win (Watkins Glen), three top fives and five top 10s in 32 starts in 2008.Stremme has five series starts at Texas with a best finish of 17th in November 2005. He has five top fives and 15 top 10s this season in 29 starts. Keller has one top 10 in 13 career starts at Texas and has one top five and four top 10s in 32 starts this year (NASCAR) (10-30-08)
Oct. 30 NASCAR Nationwide Series:With three races to go, Joey Logano (No. 20 GameStop Toyota) has Joe Gibbs Racing back in the lead for the owner championship by a 39-point margin thanks to a timely fifth-place finish at Memphis. The No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet took a one-point lead into Memphis, but Clint Bowyer’s 16th-place finish – his worst in eight races – allowed the No. 20 Toyota to reclaim the lead.Logano, 18, will make his first series start at Texas this weekend, but he’s faired well in his starts on intermediate tracks this season. He posted his first series win at Kentucky Speedway, finished second at Gateway International Raceway, was ninth at Kansas Speedway and was 14th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.Logano also will be in the No. 20 for the final two races of the season. In head-to-head competition this year, Bowyer owns an average finish of 8.5 while Logano carries a 9.5 average finish over the 16 races in which both drivers have competed.(NASCAR) (10-30-08)
Carl Edwards (No. 60 Save-A-Lot Ford) refuses to believe in momentum. But like it or not, the reigning NASCAR Nationwide Series champion has “Big Mo” on his side heading to Texas Motor Speedway.
After winning at Memphis Motortsports Park last week, he reduced Clint Bowyer’s (No. 2 BB&T Chevrolet) standings lead to 116 points, the closest he’s been to first place in eight races. The double-duty driver topped the weekend off by winning at Atlanta Motor Speedway and moved into second in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings — 184 points behind Jimmie Johnson. Edwards can become the first driver in NASCAR history to win NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series titles in the same year. He heads to Texas, the track where he clinched the 2007 NASCAR Nationwide Series title, to challenge Bowyer and Johnson for both leads. Edwards has two NASCAR Sprint Cup wins at Texas, winning there in April and also in November 2005. His career-best finish at Texas in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is third (twice). He finished 13th at the 1.5-mile speedway earlier this season. The mojo continues for Edwards at Texas. Roush Fenway Racing team owner Jack Roush has the most wins there in both NASCAR Sprint Cup (five) and NASCAR Nationwide Series (five) competition.Bowyer, meanwhile, has a fine record of his own in Ft. Worth. He’s recorded top-five finishes in his last three races at Texas, including third-place results in last season’s November race and the spring event this year.Unlike Edwards last year, Bowyer can’t clinch his first championship at Texas. However, anyone below the top three will be eliminated in the title race if Bowyer starts the race.Carl Edwards is currently having the most successful double-duty season ever.(NASCAR)

Fire damages BBM trucks & hauler UPDATE Help from Milburn; hoping to salvage #51: Jeff Milburn a former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owner who is based in Texas graciously drove to Shreveport, Louisiana to pick up what was salvageable and transported it to the Texas Motor Speedway. The trailer arrived close to midnight and the crews off both the #15 and #51 Billy Ballew Motorsports teams worked late into the early hours cleaning and evaluating the #51 Miccosukee Resort Toyota. “The biggest thing on the truck is just the water damage from the fire department shooting water on it,” Wauters said. “It just ran down into the motor and everything. The fire itself made everything just black. The primary truck, everything was just nasty black from the fire. The motor, we had to take it all apart last night, take the intake off, and get all the water out of the cylinders. We got oil put down on the cylinders and got it running last night. It appears it might be all right. We’ll find out after we practice. This thing ain’t bad. The rest, the backup truck was brand new and it got melted. That was junk. And all the contents in the trailer – the springs, the radios and all the equipment got junked. Other than that, I think this truck is all right. There’s a lot of water damage and rust, but other than that, I think we’ll be all right. Chassis 11 is his favorite truck. We’ve run 12 races in it. He doesn’t want to give it up. We’re going to try (to use the engine). We’re going to try the first practice with it and see how it runs. And if it’s all OK, we’ll keep her in it. If not, we’ll have to change it up. With the help of many in the NASCAR community Busch will be able to race in Friday’s Silverado 350k for the Billy Ballew Motor Sports team.
