| From the reports, it sounds like this was a solid weekend of exciting racing action. I didn’t get to see much of it personally. |

Edwards Sweeps Weekend At Atlanta
Carl Edwards got up on the wheel when it counted and won the Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday. On a restart with 16 laps to go, Denny Hamlin was leading the race but Edwards’ start was better than Hamlin’s and he passed Hamlin on the outside — then held the lead to the finish of the race. Edwards also won the Nationwide Series race on Saturday. It was the second time that Edwards has swept the weekend at Atlanta. The victory was the seventh for Edwards this year and the 14th of his 154 race career. Points leader Jimmie Johnson had an incredible comeback race, coming from one lap down in 29th place, after a speeding ticket 90 laps into the race, to finish second to Edwards.
“Man, the second-to-last restart, Denny spun his tires and I spun mine a little bit and then he spun them again and I pushed him bumper and then he spun them again and he went to the inside,” Edwards said. “I thought inside, ‘Man, here’s my chance to get to the outside,’ I really didn’t think he was gonna spin them that second time. I thought I was gonna bump him and he was gonna keep on going and I figured I’d follow him for a while, but it just worked out great. I went to the Aflac Cancer Hospital and met this kid, Dalton. He gave me this necklace. It’s his courage necklace. He was a really cool kid and this is really awesome. He said this would bring me luck, so it was an awesome weekend for us. I can’t believe how great this weekend is.”
Johnson held on for second place while Denny Hamlin finished third. Matt Kenseth, who led most laps (128) placed his Ford in the fourth spot followed by Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, David Ragan, Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle to round out the top ten. The win was the third one for Edwards at Atlanta. The last time a Ford driver won at least seven NASCAR Sprint Cup races in a season was 1998 when Mark Martin won seven times. This is the second time Edwards has swept a Busch and Cup weekend this season, doing it last in August at Michigan. Ford has now won 590 all-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. Today’s win is the ninth of the season for Ford.
The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the eighth race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the November 2nd, Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race begins at 4 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 3 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and PRN radio.

Stewart Applauds Goodyear
Tony Stewart was easily the most outspoken critic of Goodyear after the spring NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in which the right side tires provided by the company gave drivers little grip around 1.54-mile track. Back at Atlanta for the first time this weekend since that race, Stewart’s tune toward Goodyear has changed. Not only does the Joe Gibbs Racing driver believe Goodyear has brought a better tire this time, but also he applauds Goodyear’s efforts, beginning with two separate tire tests at the track to prevent a similar situation in the Pep Boys 500. “Obviously, what we had in the spring wasn’t anything that anyone of us wanted,” Stewart said at Atlanta. “The great thing about it is that Goodyear was active about it. They said, ‘OK, we have to do something about this.’ They came and did not one, but two tests here to make it better. That’s all you can ask for. It sounded like from the comments we heard from the drivers that came and did the test that we have a lot better tire.” Stewart believes that his rant toward Goodyear after the spring Atlanta race ultimately had a positive result.
Drivers May Switch
Mark Martin said Sunday that he would like to drive in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway for Hendrick Motorsports, if it can be worked out. Martin will replace Casey Mears in the No. 5 Hendrick car next season while Mears moves to the No. 07 Richard Childress Racing car. The two drivers already have tested or plan to test for their new teams. Martin took some laps at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Hendrick while Mears will test Nov. 4 with RCR
Petty Picks Up Sponsor
Petty Enterprises announces today that the Richard Petty Driving Experience will be the primary sponsor of the No. 45 Dodge, driven by Chad McCumbee, for the upcoming race at the Texas Motor Speedway along with new partners, TheGPSStore.com and Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation TheGPSStore.com and Garmin are continuing their long-standing associations with McCumbee. The GPS Store.com, which is headquartered near McCumbee’s hometown of Supply, N.C., has been a primary sponsor of his past NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series entries from 2006-2007.

Hendrick Motorsports is considering a plan that would put Mark Martin in the #5 car for the final race of this season at Homestead Speedway, sources told ESPN.com. Martin will drive the #5 car for Hendrick Motorsports in the 2009 season. A contingency to the plan is getting Casey Mears, the current driver of the #5, into the fourth car at Richard Childress Racing that he will drive next season. But in order to do that Mears likely would have to drive the #33, not the #07 that he is slated to drive because Clint Bowyer is driving that car in the Chase. Richard Childress Racing is willing to put Mears in the #33 car unsponsored as it wants to get him in the race. Martin will be free of his duties in the #8 at Dale Earnhardt Enterprises after the next two races at Texas and Phoenix. He will end his part-time schedule that he has been on for a couple of years to run a full-time schedule for Hendrick Motorsports. Officials from Hendrick Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing were not immediately available for comment.(ESPN)(10-27-2008)
Woods and HOF? Len and Eddie Wood [#21 Ford] say they’ve got their sponsorship deals in place for 2009, with Ford Motor Company and Motorcraft. But they are noncommittal about reports that the six team owners of the one-car Hall of Fame Racing operation (which runs #96 and is officially owned by Jeff Moorad,) are negotiating with the Woods to become Ford partners next season [Jayski Note: Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Bill Saunders and Mark Griege are no longer part of the ownership group on the #96 as of about a month ago]. Ken Schrader, a former driver for the Woods, is the Moorad team’s current driver. Moorad has been running a Toyota operation this season, with engineering support from Joe Gibbs; but that support contract is apparently up at the end of this season.(Winston Salem Journal)(10-27-2008)
NASCAR takes rear-end housing of #18: NASCAR officials opted to take the rear-end housing of the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup car driven by Kyle Busch to electronically check the measurements following Sunday’s Pep Boys 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said. Tharp said that NASCAR does not anticipate there will be a problem with the car, but wanted to check it more closely at the Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C.(SceneDaily)(10-27-2008)

Petty covers #45 up on his cap during TV show UPDATE to honor Adam: This weekend, Tradin' Paint [SPEED] welcomed [NASCAR Scene] reporter Bob Pockrass back to the program in Atlanta as the media guest. It was cold outside and Kyle Petty wore a Petty Enterprises jacket and a black baseball hat for his #45 car and its sponsors. Only this week, TV viewers saw that something was different. Petty had a black band firmly placed right through the numbers on the front of his baseball hat. It was clear for all to see that the #45 car that Kyle had clung-to in memory of his late son Adam was no longer his. The frustration emerged on a day when it was reported that Boston Ventures CEO David Zucker had said the company [Pettty Enterprises] would field two cars for 2009, but that Kyle Petty was not going to be involved with either effort. “Part-time if a sponsor could be found” was the phrase used to describe Petty’s future opportunities. Petty’s words on that topic came out during a Tradin’ Paint discussion about mergers. “I have not seen an acquisition help any team in the sport yet,” said Petty about the new wave of outside investors. “I have not seen Boston Ventures help Petty Enterprises be more competitive now than what they were at the beginning of the year. When you look at it and ask what do they get (in mergers), I don’t have a clue what they get,” continued Petty. “You are taking two organizations who are falling or stable and just putting them together. Sometimes, warm water and warm water (combined) just gets colder.”(Daly Planet)(10-26-2008)
UPDATE: Kyle Petty is wearing a black band over the #45 on hats he is wearing to honor his son, Adam Petty, who died in 2000 during Busch Series practice at New Hampshire. Petty said it was his son Austin’s idea and should not be construed as a statement against new Petty Enterprises majority owner Boston Ventures. “When Adam was killed and Austin said lets put a black band across [the number],” Petty said Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. “If you live in our neighborhood, you’ll see hundreds of these numbers [with black bands] on cars around our neighborhood. … When I started driving the 45, I said I drive the 45 and that’s Adam’s car and I didn’t even put my name on that car. So since I’m not driving the 45 as much, Austin about a month ago said, ‘Why don’t you go back and wear that hat again.’ And I thought, ‘Good idea.’ All I did was switch back since I’m not driving the 45 full time. Austin’s opinion was, and I deferred to him, that it was Adam’s number and Adam’s car and now you’re not in it, let’s go back and close the personal door. It’s a personal thing. It’s not a statement. It’s not anything other than that.” Petty had said earlier in the weekend that Boston Ventures, which bought its stake in the organization in June, had not helped the competitive side yet of the teams. Petty said Sunday that he was trying to explain that none of the mergers have helped on the competitive side and Boston Ventures had only been with the organization for four months.(SceneDaily)(10-26-2008)

RWI to one team in 2009? Rusty Wallace Racing driver Steve Wallace said at Memphis Motorsports Park that his team could be forced to cut back to one full-time team in 2009 because of a lack of sponsorship. Teammate David Stremme is moving to the Sprint Cup Series for Penske Racing next season, but Wallace said his father would like to keep Stremme in a Nationwide car as much as possible in ‘09. But sponsorship for Wallace’s #66 team hasn’t been finalized yet.(Scene Daily)(10-26-2008)
Blickensderfer will stay with the #60 team next year: Roush Fenway Racing crew chief Drew Blickensderfer said after winning the Kroger On Track For The Cure 250 Nationwide Series race that he will remain with the #60 team and Carl Edwards in 2009. Blickensderfer moved from Roush Fenway’s No. 17 team to Edwards’ team for the race at The Milwaukee Mile on June and proceeded to win at Milwaukee and five of the 15 races he has served as Edwards’ crew chief. “I’m going to be back with Carl next year,” Blickensderfer said at Memphis Motorsports Park. “We talked about it this week, actually, Carl and I did. The 60 car is a premier job. You would be crazy to want to go somewhere to change this. And I don’t. I love working with Carl. I love working with the 60 guys. Running every single week is fun as a racer. And getting to do it with him is pretty special.”(Scene Daily)(10-26-2008)
