Farewell, Bobby Hamilton
By: Capt. Herb Emory

The news that stockcar veteran Bobby Hamilton has lost his battle with cancer was a little surprising to my wife and I as we watched the story break Sunday night. We knew Bobby was fighting the disease, but I don’t guess we realized just how serious his situation was.

Marlin Leads Hamilton Tributes
Sterling Marlin has led the tributes to Bobby Hamilton after the former Craftsman Truck Series champion lost his fight with cancer at the age of 49. Hamilton was diagnosed with neck cancer in March last year and died on Sunday, plunging the NASCAR world into mourning on the eve pre-season testing at Daytona. MB2 Motorsports ace Marlin, a good friend of the four time NEXTEL Cup race winner, admitted that Hamilton would be sorely missed. “Bobby was a great guy and a good friend,” he said. “This sport is really going to miss him. He was a hard, clean racer and a really talented driver. We started racing right about the same time and he was a fierce competitor. He knew what he wanted to do and he made it happen. But at the same time he’d give anyone the shirt off his back. He was a sincere man that genuinely cared about people. We flew a lot of miles together to and from races and test sessions and made some good memories together. Everyone in the racing world will miss him.”

DEI Hires Kerry Earnhardt
He (Kerry Earnhardt) will join Dale Earnhardt Inc. as a full-time employee next week, serving as a liaison between the Nextel Cup and Busch programs and driving in a handful of races. “Teresa and Richie have been talking to me about coming there for several years,” Kerry said of team owner/stepmother Teresa Earnhardt and director of motorsports Richie Gilmore. “I’ve been thinking about the company a lot in my head. It’s hard to give up driving. Now I’ve come to a point where I realize that doing the things I’m doing is not doing me any good, just riding around and not having any decent finishes.”

Kerry, the spitting image of his father, drove full time in the Craftsman Truck Series a year ago for ThorSports Racing. He was 22nd in points with no finish better than 11th.He drove in seven Nextel Cup races between 2000 and 2005 with no finish better than 17th. That came two years ago at Talladega for Richard Childress, who was his dad’s car owner for six of seven titles. He has 68 starts in the Busch Series since 1998 with only three top-5s and six top-10s. “I’ve got four kids, a baby 3½ years old,” said Kerry, who has done most of the testing for DEI’s Car of Tomorrow. “There have been several times when we’ve blown a right-front tire or got caught up in somebody else’s accident and I’ve taken some pretty hard licks. I’ve started thinking more about my life than my career.”

Vote For Magazine Cover

The trademark issue, which will hit stands Jan. 31, looks ahead and identifies those athletes whose talent and style will shape the landscape of sports in the years to come. Montoya will become the first Formula One regular to race full time on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup circuit when he takes the green flag at the season-opening Daytona 500 this February.

TNT, for the prime-time July 7 Pepsi 400, wants to add some wrinkles. Trish Frohman, TNT executive vice president, hopes to enlist 12 advertisers she says Pepsi, DirecTV and pain reliever 360 OTC are in to air commercials, running up to two minutes, in about a quarter of the TV screen as race shots continue. Correction. Those “won’t be commercials,” says Frohman, but rather “branded content” that’s “organic to the environment.” Meaning, she says, that TNT’s production staffers will work with advertisers to make ads er, “content” specifically for the race. TNT announcers, she says, will “absolutely” be “as engaged as anybody” in the effort. Which shouldn’t surprise anybody. TV networks, paying millions or even billions for big-time TV rights, already seem like ad agencies for sports they cover. While Pepsi 400 coverage will still include local cable ads beyond TNT’s purview, Frohman says the total time devoted to marketing messages will be less than normal NASCAR coverage.(USA Today)(1-12-2007)

ESPN the Magazine allows fans to vote for next cover: Each year, ESPN The Magazine’s trademark NEXT issue looks ahead and identifies those athletes whose talent and style will shape the landscape of sports in the years to come. This year, in addition to showcasing the innovations and trends that are changing the games we love, The Magazine has selected five finalists to vie for the prize of NEXT cover athlete: Dwight Howard, Calvin Johnson, Evgeni Malkin, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jose Reyes. For the second year in a row, fans can log on to ESPN.com, from January 10-17, to vote on who should be NEXT. The winner of the poll will appear on the cover of The Magazines NEXT issue, on sale January 31. Previous NEXT cover athletes include Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Yao Ming, Alex Rodriguez and Brian Urlacher.(ESPN PR)(1-12-2007)

Speedway case hearing begins in shooting of detective at Kansas Speedway: Detective Susan Brown was guarding a vault building at Kansas Speedway when she saw a masked man approach with a gun in his hand. After telling a worker to get inside, Brown pulled her handgun and tried to shut the door, she said. But before she could get the door closed, an object later determined to be a handgun was jammed into the space between the door and its frame, near the hinges. Thats when the gunfire started and she was critically injured, Brown testified during a preliminary hearing Tuesday for two men, Fredrick Douglas and Nolden Garner, who are accused of attempting to rob the speedway the evening of Oct. 1. During the hearing, a worker overseeing the operations of the vault building testified that at the time of the robbery attempt, workers were getting ready to move about $1 million after a weekend of racing. The robbers struck just after workers had moved eight $500 boxes of quarters into a minivan outside the vault building. At the end of testimony, Wyandotte County Judge Robert L. Serra ordered both Douglas, 66, of Kansas City, Kan., and Garner, 51, of Grandview to stand trial. They are charged with attempted capital murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and attempted aggravated robbery. Attorneys for the men entered not-guilty pleas on their behalf. The men are not thought to have gotten away with any money. The days testimony outlined the evidence that linked the men to the crime, including testimony by a detective who said Garner admitted to the crime and that a third person was involved. That person provided aprons and caps that would allow Douglas and Garner into the area where the vault was located, Howard testified. A spokesman for the Wyandotte County district attorneys office said this week that no one else has been charged in connection with the case. In her emotional testimony, Brown testified that she was shot between four and six times. She suffered injuries to her right shoulder, right wrist and a leg. She testified that at least one of the suspects continued to shoot at her when she was lying on the ground wounded.(Kansas City Star)(1-12-2007)

Plans are underway for the 1st Annual Spencer Clark Golf Tournament at the Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas on March 7. Proceeds from the event, which includes a special auction and luncheon, will go to the Spencer Clark Driven Foundation. Clark, an immensely talented and passionate young race car driver who was quickly rising through the NASCAR ranks, perished in a tragic traffic accident last year. The Spencer Clark Driven Foundation – fueled by his family and friends – is dedicated in his memory and is aimed at helping young drivers, with the same passion and desire, achieve their goals in racing. For more information about the event or the foundation, Motorsports Management at 704-235-5789 or contact Becky McBride at 619-518-6767, bmcbride@onebox.com, or Debbie Clark at 702-647-5432. They’re separated by 25 years and three full seasons, but the pairing of Brian Vickers (No. 83 Red Bull Toyota) and David Green summons fresh memories – even with one in a race car and the other’s voice in his ears. Both former NASCAR Busch Series champions, Vickers, 23, and Green, 48, have worked in tandem during this week’s NASCAR Jackson Hewitt Preseason Thunder testing at Daytona International Speedway. Thursday marked the final day of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series’ first preseason session, with Green providing the soundtrack to Vickers’ endless laps. It’s a role the former enjoys, even as he yearns for the driver’s seat.Green hopes to be back in a NASCAR Busch Series seat soon. He’s working on a program with the new Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports, and was happy to assist Vickers this week. Former fellow NASCAR Busch Series competitor Elton Sawyer, now Team Red Bull’s competition director, made the request, an assignment that includes the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup preseason test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Jan 29-30. After leaving Brewco Motorsports near the end of last season, Green spotted for David Gilliland (No. 38 M&M’s Ford) for eight races. (NASCAR PR) (01-11-07)

Kerry Earnhardt will join Dale Earnhardt Inc. as a full-time employee next week, serving as a liaison between the Nextel Cup and Busch programs and driving in a handful of races. He has 68 starts in the Busch Series since 1998 with only three top-5s and six top-10s. Kerry, 37, has asked to drive in at least five Busch races and a couple of Cup races for DEI, but said his future with the company doesn’t hinge on that. “Now if I run three to five Busch races and can be successful with that maybe more things can come to me.” (ESPN) (01-11-07)

The coming campaign will be the 13th for the series – and the eighth to begin on the Daytona high.

As many as six former champions owning a combined nine titles will compete for the crown in 2007 including defending champion Todd Bodine (#30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota). The Germain Racing stable also includes 2005 champion Ted Musgrave (#9 Team ASE/Germain Toyota). Three former champions who finished among the top 10 in 2006 – Jack Sprague (#60 Con-way Freight Toyota), Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 AES HR Solutions Chevy) and Mike Skinner (#5 Toyota Tundra Toyota) – also are contenders this season. The 2003 champion Travis Kvapil, a Nextel Cup Series competitor in 2005-06, rejoins the series as the driver of Jack Roush’s #6 Ford – a truck in which Mark Martin won six times including the Daytona season opener.

More than 40 drivers are expected to participate in the weekend’s activities including a number of series newcomers. McCumbee finished second in last year’s Raybestos Rookie of the Year competition behind Erik Darnell (#99 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford). Darnell is paired with Kvapil at Roush Racing.
