Track Trash – Kanassas

Even the Bowtie fans have got to give Flip his due regard, cuz he drove his heart out at the end of this race. But he’s probably still shaking his head, and muttering “coulda, woulda, shoulda”….

Johnson Wins Fifth Race This Year
Jimmie Johnson captured his fifth victory of the 2008 season in Sunday’s Camping World RV 400 at Kansas Speedway. It was Johnson’s 12th “Chase” victory and his 38th win in 248 career races. Although Johnson led the most laps (76), he nearly lost the race on the last lap. He and Edwards were running one-two in the final 20 laps and Edwards was slowly closing in on Johnson. Edwards gave it one final lunge on the last lap — getting past Johnson, but couldn’t hold his line and scraped the wall. Johnson drove back past Edwards and took the victory.
“Where did he come from,” Johnson said, referring to the final thrust by Edwards. “Those last two laps, he figured out something and got a bunch of grip. Man he was there I just didn’t know. I thought I had him under control and I just didn’t know he was there. Great race, I saw the slide job coming, dodged it and got one.” — Johnson’s crew got him out first on the final caution and Johnson took advantage of it. “Yeah that really was the difference,” Johnson said. “The ninety-nine was probably better on the long runs at the end of the race and we did a great job of closing the gap. That pit stop from those guys really made the difference. We’re doing all the right things.”
After Edwards scrapped the wall he gave a final stab at Johnson but had to settle for second place. “I planned on hitting the wall but I didn’t plan on the wall slowing me down that much,” Edwards said. “I’ve played a lot of video games where you can run it into the wall and hold it wide open — that’s what I did but it didn’t quite work out the way I wanted it to. I feel bad for the guys back in the race shop for tearing up their car intentionally but I wasn’t going to get by him on the top and I didn’t want to go in there with a slide job and hit him, so I just did what I could do.”
Greg Biffle got by Jeff Gordon on the final lap to take the third spot, giving fourth to Gordon. Matt Kenseth battled his way back to fifth place after spinning early in the race and Kevin Harvick was sixth. Jeff Burton finished seventh followed by David Ragan, A.J. Allmendinger and Elliott Sadler to round out the top ten. Johnson now leads in the NASCAR points system by 10 over Carl Edwards. The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the fourth race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the Oct. 5 AMP Energy 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. The race begins at 2 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 1 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.
Paul Newman Dies
Paul Newman was introduced to motor racing in 1968 while filming a movie at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and that blossomed into a 40-year passion for the sport that included co-ownership of one of the most powerful teams in the Indianapolis 500 of the last 25 years and his own successful driving career. Newman, an Academy Award-winning actor and world-renowned activist and humanitarian, died Friday, Sept 26 at his home in Westport, Conn. He was 83. Between 1983 and 1995, cars entered by the partnership of Newman and Carl Haas established themselves as a major force in the Indianapolis 500. While never able to pull off a win, the team did score a pair of strong second-place finishes, with Mario Andretti in 1985 and with Michael Andretti in 1991, plus a third in the hands of defending Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell in 1993. Time and time again, it appeared that a Newman-Haas driver was destined to win the “500.” In 1987, Mario Andretti led 170 of the first 177 laps from the pole, only to drop out late with an ignition problem. It was one of 13 occasions on which a Newman-Haas driver would lead the “500,” and one of five in which their laps-led total would be greater than by any other driver in the race. There are three separate instances, 1989, 1992 and 1995, in which Michael Andretti was forced out while leading. The most devastating loss came in 1992, when he was eliminated after having led 160 of the 189 laps he completed. Between 1984 and 1995, Mario and Michael Andretti combined for an amazing 773 laps in the lead, Mansell accounting for another 34. In 2004, after several years’ absence, the Newman-Haas team returned, former pole winner Bruno Junqueira extending that record by leading an additional 16 laps on his way to a fifth-place finish.
Barrett To Run IndyCar Series and Some NASCAR
NASCAR driver Stanton Barrett plans to broaden his horizons next season, adding a full run in the IndyCar Series to his driving duties. Barrett, who competes on a part-time basis for Ski Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series and for his own team (in a partnership with Ski) in the Nationwide Series, is not completely leaving stock cars, though. He says that he plans to participate in NASCAR’s Cup season-opening Daytona 500 and its qualifying events and to continue to drive in 10 Nationwide races next season, in addition to running the full IndyCar schedule. He will compete for the Curb/Agajanian/Team 3G team in the IndyCar ranks and for Team 3G in the Nationwide.

Kyle Petty out at Petty Enterprises? Was this #45-Kyle Petty’s last race for Petty Enterprises? Sunday’s Kansas 400 looks like it might well have been his last Sprint Cup run for the family business that he’s worked for for so many years, that his grandfather Lee founded in 1949 and that his father Richard has been running all these years. That pending departure-not of Kyle Petty’s own doing-is the stunning word from Patti Petty, Kyle’s wife. Kyle Petty has been the center of a family storm of controversy since the spring, and he insists he doesn’t think he’s part of the long-running problems at Petty Enterprises. And Patti Petty says her husband is determined to stay at the wheel of a Cup car…..for someone. Kyle Petty himself … has been struggling with the entire situation, Patti Petty says. While Petty himself was stoic about whatever turmoil is going on behind the scenes, promising to talk about things eventually, his wife was quite emotional - “Maybe I’m the only one here willing to tell the truth,” she said. “They haven’t wanted Kyle in the car the last three years. They want a young driver, a 30-year-old, a 20-year-old. “But Wells Fargo, our sponsor, says it’s going to stay with Kyle, whatever he does. I wish Chip Ganassi (a fellow Dodge team owner) would take a look at Kyle. He’s got a 12-race sponsorship deal for next year that would be a perfect part-time schedule for Kyle. And Kyle could help mentor a young driver. They told him at Watkins Glen - right when he was standing there in his driver’s suit - that they didn’t want him in the car.” There are indications that Michael McDowell, currently driving for Michael Waltrip’s Toyota operation, and AJ Allmendinger, currently driving for Team Red Bull, are under consideration for the Petty ride, as teammate with Bobby Labonte. Kyle Petty is tentatively scheduled to run a Petty car at Phoenix in November, but Patti Petty says that looks too iffy.(Winston-Salem Journal)(9-29-2008
JTG Daugherty Racing hasn’t named a manufacturer for next season when it moves full time to the Sprint Cup Series from the Nationwide Series but the team was working out of a Michael Waltrip Racing hauler on Saturday at Kansas Speedway. JTG Daugherty, which qualified on speed for Sunday’s Cup race with driver #47-Marcos Ambrose, had a hauler fire in June that destroyed one of its transporters. The team got some help from Richard Childress Racing when it qualified for the Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in late July. But could the team working out of a MWR hauler at Kansas be a sign of a potential affiliation and a move to Toyota? JTG Daugherty currently fields Fords. “Obviously we have a really good relationship with Michael Waltrip Racing,” Geschickter said. “At this point, we’re not ready to announce anything. But we know them better than most in the fact that we were able to go straight over there and borrow some equipment.”(SceneDaily.com)(9-28-2008)
Biffle could be first to win championship in all 3 series: #16-Greg Biffle thought about it back in 2000 when he won the NASCAR Craftsman Trucks Series championship. What if he could move on to the Busch (now Nationwide) Series and win that championship? And, what if, after winning the 2002 Nationwide title, he could move on to the Sprint Cup Series and win that championship? Biffle, third in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup by a scant 10 points going into the Camping World RV 400 at Kansas Speedway, has a chance to become the first driver in history to win the Triple Crown. Biffle, 38, came excruciatingly close to winning his third different NASCAR title in 2005 when he tied for second in the Chase, just 35 points behind champion Tony Stewart.(Kansas City Star)(9-28-2008)

NASCAR Newscast: Chase for the Sprint Cup - Week 3 Review
Hear and see the fast and furious fight to the finish between Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards as the two-time, defending champion took the win and the top spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup from the Missouri native at his home track.

Johnson Holds Off Edwards’ Charge to Take Chase Lead
It was probably one of the most spectacular finishes in NASCAR history. Carl Edwards made a suicide run into the third turn underneath race leader Jimmie Johnson. He was determined to win. Unfortunately, Edwards ran out of track before running into the wall, struggled to maintain control and watched Johnson go back by him for the victory at Kansas Speedway. A sellout crowd stood, cheering the last-lap, do-or-die antics of the hard-driving Edwards, even though his banzai run tactics didn’t work. Greg Biffle made a last-lap pass of Jeff Gordon for third position. Matt Kenseth was fifth after a day of struggles, and Kevin Harvick finished sixth. Jeff Burton was seventh, David Ragan eighth, AJ Allmendinger ninth and Elliott Sadler 10th.

“Paul Newman - a real American hero, an inspiration to me in much that I have attempted in my adult life. Not so much for the parts he played but for the man that he was. He was one of Hollywood’s greatest. He could not only talk the talk on film but more importantly could walk the walk as a private citizen. As a young man he was an American hero who served his country in one of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ most dangerous assignments in western Europe. Additionally, his charitable enterprizes have generated 10’s of millions for the benefit of hundreds of thousands of underpriviledged Americans. He will be never forgotten, may he rest in peace.”
- Jack Roush on the passing of Paul Newman (Roush PR)

Sponsor announcement for Keselowski expected soon: Dale Earnhardt Jr. says that an announcement will be forthcoming concerning a new primary sponsor for next season on the #88 JR Motorsports Chevy driven by Brad Keselowski. “We’re very close on being able to announce something on our programs for next year,” Earnhardt Jr. said at Kansas Speedway. “We’re really excited about how good that looks right now. But everything that Brad does in a positive way, whether it be in [the Sprint Cup] garage or the Nationwide garage, certainly helps our program. And he’s dedicated to it - he really is - and I appreciate his efforts. We give him a good opportunity and he’s repaying me by his loyalty and his energy toward that program.”(Scene Daily)(9-28-2008)
Toyota clinches manufacturer’s championship: When Denny Hamlin’s Camry crossed the finish line first at Kansas Speedway in Saturday afternoon’s Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Kansas Speedway, it enabled Toyota to clinch its first NNS manufacturer’s championship in its second year of series competition. This marks the third time that Toyota has earned a NASCAR manufacturer’s title since the start of the 2004 season. In each of the past two years (2006 and 2007), Toyota has earned manufacturer’s titles in the Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS). The performance of four teams fielding six Camrys — Braun Racing, Germain Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing — all contributed to the first Nationwide Series manufacturer’s title earning Toyota the Bill France Performance Cup. Camry Nationwide Series drivers have combined to produce 18 victories, 48 top-five finishes, 85 top-10 results and 11 pole positions in the first 30 events of the 2008 season.(Toyota PR)(9-27-2008)
Carpentier full NNS schedule in ‘09? With Reed Sorenson moving over to GEM for next season and sponsors in short supply, his [Patrick Carpentier] chances of remaining with his #10 team appear slim. Although he said the door isn’t completely closed on a return to GEM, he may wind up running full time in the Nationwide Series next season. Carpentier has competed in eight Nationwide events this year, with a top finish of second Montreal.(nascar.com)(9-27-2008)

Post-race quotes from race-winner Denny Hamlin-”We didn’t have the best car in qualifying, and didn’t have the best car at the beginning of the race, but the whole Z-Line crew did a great job making the adjustments throughout the race and the car just kept getting better and better. We had to run the bottom. I tried running the top and I couldn’t get it to work. When I came up on the lap traffic there at the end, I had to be a little patient with the 29 (Jeff Burton) and the 33 (Kevin Harvick) — knowing that they had their RCR teammate right back there in second. We had to have our car on the bottom and it worked out for us.” What were your thoughts on the restart with lead lap cars in front of you? “I wasn’t hesitating, I was trying it, that’s for sure. We needed just a fender to clear some of those guys. I think the 64 (David Stremme) right off the bat when we went the first three-wide. He was trying to battle and stay on the lead lap or get the ‘lucky dog.’ He raced us pretty tough and it let the 2 (Clint Bowyer) and the 17 (Matt Kenseth) get a little closer to me than what I’d like. I couldn’t get my car working up high. Even if he chose to give me the bottom, he was running so hard up top — I could not get around him. I was trying to do everything I could to space myself up early in that restart but I just could not get clear.” Do you feel you have as much horsepower now as you did before the rule change? “Since we’ve taken the magnets off the gas pedals, we go even further now (laughter). They’ve done a good job to regain the horsepower and I think they’ve gotten a little bit of it back, for sure. I’ve never seen a team — and it’s definitely zoomed in on Joe Gibbs Racing — a team get penalized for such hard work. I’ve been in different cars — I’ve been in the 32 at Braun and the Gibbs cars. It’s just the details of the race team that are making us so strong. It’s not the engine package. It’s just really good equipment, really good people over there and when you have the support that the Cup side is giving the Nationwide side, it’s going to be tough for an outside team to really compete.”(ToyotaRacing) (09-27-08)
For the second straight weekend, the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota made a “Z-Line” to victory lane. After Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver Kyle Busch dominated last Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway by leading three times for a race-high 157 laps en route to the No. 18 team’s seventh win of 2008, Denny Hamlin took the baton at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City and delivered another dominant performance. Hamlin’s run to the checkers was aided in large part by his pit crew. The Z-Line Designs Toyota began the 300-mile race pushing through the track’s corners. It was only after a handful of chassis adjustments during some lightning-quick pit stops that allowed Hamlin to pick up the lead for the first time after pitting under caution on lap 93.“We made adjustments every pit stop,” said Hamlin, who drove from 19th in the 43-car field. “Everyone on this race team never gave up. We didn’t have the best car in qualifying, didn’t have the best car at the beginning of the race, but the whole Z-Line Designs crew did a great job making the adjustments throughout the race and the car just kept getting better and better.“It was probably a top-five car or a mid-top-10 car for the first 75 laps, and then we had one adjustment that really made the car take off. I think it was the second or third pit stop. Joel (Weidman, co-crew chief) and Mike (Ford, co-crew chief) got together and did some great adjustments on the car and it got better each time I came on pit road.”(JGR) (09-27-08)
DAVID RAGAN – No. 6 Discount Tire Ford Fusion (finished 3rd, qualified 9th) – “Well, that’s about the best we’ve been on a mile-and-a-half track in a while. We always seem to be pretty good on Friday and then when they drop the green flag we’re usually just pretty average. But, we made a good run and made good pit stops. You know, we were a fifth- or sixth-place car and got track position at the end and finished third.”DENNY HAMLIN HAS HAD HIS CUP CREW CHIEF WORKING THE NATIONWIDE SIDE. DO YOU EVER WANT YOUR CUP CREW CHIEF ON SATURDAYS OR DO YOU FEEL LIKE HE’S GOT ENOUGH TO WORRY ABOUT? “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind having my Cup crew chief around. He’d probably make my [Nationwide] crew chief so nervous that it would be a catastrophe in the pits. But, no, it would be good to have my Cup crew chief around a little bit to just maybe pick up on one or two things. And even if he’s not here he looks over the notes and he knows what we did all day today. He’s back at the hotel watching on TV, but he’ll know what we did anyway.”(Ford Racing) (09-27-08)
CARL EDWARDS – No. 60 Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion (finished 4th, qualified 4th) – “A good finish but not what we needed with Clint [Bowyer] finishing second. We fought back all day. The guys did a really good job. A couple of little things happened. The valence got broken, I guess, at the beginning – I haven’t seen a picture of it or anything. We fixed that, and then we this vibration that I thought the engine was blowing up. It ran all day. And then the tachometer needle broke, so coming off for the last pit stop, I was trying to remember back to the days when I drove my van with no speedometer, you know, I was trying to calibrate my internal speedometer. I just had a slow pit road because of that. The guys did a good job.” HOW WAS THE CAR ON THE LONG RUNS? “We were a lot better on the longer runs. I guess we’ll just go on and hope we can catch Clint somewhere else. He did a good job.” ARE YOU ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT WHERE HE IS ON THE TRACK? “Oh, yeah. I guarantee you that Clint and I know where each other are as much as anybody on the race track. That’s just part of it. You don’t want to get hung out on a strategy thing, so we keep track of one another.” (Ford Racing) (09-27-08)

Kevin Harvick Inc. won a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship with Camping World on the hood of Ron Hornaday’s truck last year, but the company continues to look for additional ways to market to NASCAR fans. One of those is being among the companies negotiating with NASCAR to sponsor the truck series. “We’ve enjoyed being involved with that organization [at KHI] on several levels and it’s a very first-class organization,” said Camping World Director of Motorsports Kurt Hunt on Friday. “They brought us a championship and hopefully one on the horizon. … It’s kind of like college. You don’t graduate with the major you started with. Camping World has increased its sponsorships in NASCAR this year by putting its name on several races as well as NASCAR’s East Series and West Series. Hunt said it was too early in the discussions to talk about whether Camping World would remain as sponsor of those regional circuits. Hunt indicated that Camping World, which has branched into the rental business, is doing well despite the slow economy and has the ability to spend the marketing money. Hunt wouldn’t speculate on when a deal to sponsor the series would be completed. “I’m not sure we’re under any particular timeline right now. Certainly, the participants in the series are eager, the fans are eager, the media is eager to have that part of the NASCAR drama come to an end,” Hunt said. “It’s probably in everybody’s best interest for NASCAR to land on the right square in the next 30 days or so.”(SceneDaily.com)(9-27-2008)
Ted Musgrave and HT Motorsports abruptly parted ways during the weekend’s truck race at Las Vegas. In fact, it happened Saturday between the first and second practice sessions. Musgrave wrecked during the practice session and quit the team. He was replaced by Stacy Compton for the second practice and the race. Musgrave said today on Sirius satellite radio that he quit after a team official accused him of wrecking the truck intentionally.(EverythingAlabama.com)(9-27-2008)

Camping World In Play
09-26-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Camping World In Play NASCAR Craftsman Truck and Nationwide Series team owner Kevin Harvick said Friday he doesn’t know if Camping World will become the Truck Series title sponsor, but he knows the company is of several looking at it for next season and beyond. Camping World has decided it will not sponsor the Kevin Harvick Inc. Nationwide team for 14 races next season as the team had hoped, Harvick said at Kansas Speedway on Friday. Camping World will continue as the primary sponsor of Ron Hornaday Jr.’s KHI Chevrolet Silverado in the Truck Series next year, however. “Right now on the truck side, it doesn’t really affect anything until the end of 2009,” Harvick said. “Camping World is signed on to be the sponsor through the end of ‘09. It affects our Nationwide program a little bit. It opens up a 14-race gap that wasn’t there. That is how it affects it.” As far as Camping World’s plans with the Truck Series, Harvick added, “Obviously Camping World has been involved in a lot of entitlements and things. I want them to do what is best for them as a sponsor and what works best for them. Understanding where everything comes from and how it works, I think for them, it sounds like they think that is a better avenue. That is OK. They are still solid on our truck and I feel confident on getting the 14 races on our Nationwide car put in place.”

Top-10 ARCA RE/MAX Series Points After The Loud Energy Drink 150 at New Jersey Motorsports Park (9-28-08); 1) Scott Speed 4520; 2) Ricky Stenhouse Jr 4455; 3) Justin Allgaier 4300; 4) Frank Kimmel 4290; 5) Matt Carter 4270; 6) Tayler Malsam 3675; 7) Patrick Sheltra 3660;
John Wes Townley 3654; 9) Tom Hessert III 3640; 9) Ken Butler III 3640.
Allgaier Answers Road Course Call; Wins in Career-First Road Course Start at New Jersey Motorsport Park
MILLVILLE NJ (9-28-08) – The combination of a little luck, the necessary skill and the right pit road strategy turned Justin Allgaier into a road course winner Sunday afternoon in the inaugural Loud Energy Drink 150 at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Allgaier, making his career-first road course start, was in the lead when the rain started falling prompting ARCA RE/MAX Series officials to wave the checkered flag 19 laps shy of the scheduled 67-lap, 150-mile distance.
Allgaier, out of sequence with many of the front-runners, had already made his pit stop for fuel earlier than most and found himself the leader just in time for the rain to fall.
“I’ve got to hand this one to my crew chief Jim Pohlman,” said Allgaier. “He was up late last night rewinding the race in his mind so he knew exactly when we needed to pit for fuel and still make it to the end. As it turned out, it also put us in position to win the race. Then we got some help from Mother Nature. I would have rather won the thing under green, but we’ll take it this way too.
“On Tuesday testing here it was my first time road course racing ever,” added Allgaier. “Felt like I was in a John Deer tractor because I was plowing more dirt than I was on the racetrack. All in all, it’s a great weekend and it was a great experience. If you look at the ARCA RE/MAX Series, we’ve got the most diverse array of racetracks in any series, and fortunately now we’ve been able to win on a dirt track, a short track, a superspeedway and on a road course, so, for us, that’s really cool.”
Colin Braun, who relieved Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in the Aflac Ford, charged from the tail-end to finish second. Stenhouse, still on the mend from crash in a midget car at Eldora Speedway one week ago, gave up the seat to Braun during a lap three caution period.
“I’m disappointed,” said Braun. “Just the way the whole race ended up. I don’t think any of the fans wanted to see the thing end in yellow. It’s not really the way I’d like to have the race finish up. We definitely had something for Justin (Allgaier), but it was a good day for points. That was the goal here to try to get Ricky up in points.”
The podium finish allowed Stenhouse to move to within 65 points of Scott Speed in the ARCA RE/MAX Series championship points race. Braun’s effort also credited Stenhouse with the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie honors and the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race.
“I had a crash last weekend in the midget and I didn’t think I was going to be 100 percent for this race so I just decided that for this race it would be best for Roush Fenway Racing for me to start it and to let Colin finish it,” said Stenhouse. “He did a good job and gained us some points and that’s the main thing we wanted him to do.”
Speed, after running in the second position for most of the race, ran out of time before he could get back up front, and was credited with the eighth finishing position.
Tayler Malsam, who ran up front all afternoon rain or shine, finished third in the Dodge Development Dodge, tying his career-best series finish.
“I definitely like road course racing,” said Malsam. “I did some Formula TR stuff so I had experience heading into this race so that really helped.”
SIM Factory Pole winner Andy Lally, in the TRG Motorsports Chevrolet, finished fourth after leading the most laps. Brian Scott finished fifth in the Albertsons Chevrolet.
Lally led from the onset and pulled out to a 10-length lead over Speed and Parker Kligerman. Lally continued to stretch his lead until giving it up for pit road service on lap 30, during which time Dexter Bean inherited the top-spot. Then Allgaier took the lead from Bean on lap 36 when Bean ducked into the pit area for service. Allgaier led the remainder of the race, including ten laps of caution for rain showers while series officials waited to see if the storms would subside.
Kligerman, in his career-first series start, finished sixth in front of James Buescher in seventh. Buescher, who started 22nd, also earned the Casite Hard Charger of the Race. Veteran Bob Schacht, making his first series start in seven seasons, finished ninth. Nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel was 10th.
Lally was also the Aaron’s Lap Leader with 29 laps led while his crew chief Jon Wolfe earned the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race honors. Bean, who ended up 14th, was the Klotz Halfway Leader.
Just two races remain in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series – the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega Superspeedway on October 3rd and ARCA Championship Weekend at Toledo Speedway on October 11th and 12th. For a complete schedule of each event, visit arcaracing.com.

Atlanta, Ga.-Today, Hooters of America, Inc. and United Speed Alliance Racing (USAR) announced that the current 2008 season will be the last year the popular national restaurant chain will be involved as title sponsor of USAR and its Hooters Pro Cup Series. The Company, which has been involved with USAR since its creation in 1994, cited the poor economy and the need to focus on restaurant related marketing activities as reasons to end the long standing sponsorship relationship.
“We appreciate the role USAR has played in furthering the Hooters Brand for the past 14 years,” stated Mike McNeil, Vice President of Marketing for Hooters of America, Inc. “Gene Cox and the staff at USAR have done an admirable job of developing USAR into one of the premier racing organizations in the country. FRASERVILLE, Ontario – Scott Steckly wrapped up his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio championship Saturday night, holding off a late-season challenge from Don Thomson Jr.
Steckly finished 17th in the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 250 at Kawartha Speedway, while Thomson finished fifth, to earn his first NASCAR championship by 24 points. Jason Hathaway picked up his first career victory in a race that was called after 174 of the scheduled 250 laps because of rain.
Steckly won three of the first four races of the season and held the points lead the entire season. The 36-year-old from Milverton, Ontario driver finished with four wins, nine top fives and nine top 10s in 12 races.
He is the second champion in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series history. Andrew Ranger won the inaugural championship in 2007.
Thomson had been able to close the gap late in the season with a win, a third, and a seventh-place finish in the three races heading into the finale. In that span, Steckly – who hadn’t finished worse than fourth in the first seven events – sandwiched his fourth win of the year with finishes of 13th and 18th. Steckly brought a 67-point lead to Kawartha.
Thomson won his seventh pole position of the season and led the first 42 laps before pitting. Steckly assumed the lead - picking up the five valuable bonus points - and stayed out front for 18 laps. D.J. Kennington took the lead for 43 laps before trading the lead with Steckly over two laps. Hathaway moved to the front on lap 107 and led the rest of the way. A steady rain brought out the red flag on lap 173.
As the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion, Steckly earned a secure spot in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. The Showdown will be Jan. 23-24, 2009 at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.). Last year, Ranger represented the series in the prestigious postseason event.
