Truex to Tee It Up for Charity: On Thursday, September 18th, Martin Truex Jr. will kick off the First Annual Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Golf Tournament in his hometown of Mayetta, N.J. Though he describes himself as an “awful” golfer, the 28-year old Sprint Cup driver can’t wait to hit the links at Sea Oaks Golf Club in Tuckerton, New Jersey, to help raise money for several local charities. The “best ball” tournament which kicks off at 11:30 a.m. will be followed by a silent auction and fan appreciation dinner at the Sea Oaks Resort. Proceeds from the tournament spread to several local organizations including the Ocean of Love program, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping Ocean County children with cancer and their families; the Head Start Program of Ocean County, a program dedicated to providing services to underprivileged children in Ocean County; the 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Center, a treatment center for dyslexic children that provides assistance free of charge; and the New Jersey Pajama Program, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing new pajamas and books to abused children in the area. “It’s important to me to give back to the kids in my area who are less fortunate than I was growing up,” said Truex, a native of nearby Mayetta, N.J. “Playing golf is a great way to get together with old friends, meet new ones and raise money for these great causes. I’m looking forward to giving back to the community here; I’ve waited for this for a long time.” Foursomes for the golf tournament and tickets for the dinner have sold out, a fact that doesn’t surprise Truex. “NASCAR fans are the most supportive fans of any sport in the country, especially in this area,” continued Truex. “They love their racing and they’ll jump at the chance to give back to their community.” When asked about the state of his golf game, the Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver smiled and replied, “Let’s just say I’m a much better driver than I am a golfer. That’s okay, though. It’s not about playing golf today; it’s about raising money for kids.” After the tournament, the 300-person fan appreciation dinner will feature a silent auction, raffle, door prizes, live entertainment and check presentations for the local charities. For more information on how you can donate to the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation or to the charities in Martin’s hometown of Mayetta, please visit www.martintruexjrfoundation.org. – DMF Communications For Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Press Release

Disabled Activist Sues Infineon
An activist for disabled rights has filed a lawsuit against Infineon Raceway, alleging violations of several California and federal laws. Richard Skaff, a paraplegic who has worked in the San Francisco mayor’s office on disabilities and currently runs a non-profit organization that educates businesses on accessible facilities, filed the lawsuit Sept. 8 in U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Skaff alleges violations of the Americans with Disability Act because of alleged non-compliant seating, parking, infrastructure, ticketing procedures, restrooms and other issues. “There are a lot of problems,” said Skaff¹s attorney, Jordon Metz, in an interview Tuesday. “They need to be addressed. If they will work with us, we will help them just get everything corrected, and people who are in wheelchairs will have nothing but a great experience.”

Smith Won’t Change New Hampshire Track
A New Hampshire Motor Speedway official said Tuesday that Speedway Motorsports Inc., the company that purchased the facility from Bob Bahre before the start of this season, will not change the layout of the 1.058-mile fairly flat oval. Many had expected the eccentric Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of Speedway Motorsports, would have grand plans to create a new racetrack. And while Smith and his engineers still expect some significant changes at the facility, those changes won’t involve the oval. .

Erwin Named Best Crew Chief
Greg Erwin, crew chief of the No. 16 Dish Network Turbo HD Ford Fusion driven by Greg Biffle, was named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Sunday’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Erwin’s leadership down the stretch proved the difference for Biffle as he battled a dominant No. 48 Lowe’s Chevy, driven by Jimmie Johnson all day at the Magic Mile. With a series of late race cautions, Biffle’s Erwin-led crew kept Biffle in the front of the pack with swift pit stops and eventually got him the right mix of tires and adjustments that gave their No. 16 Ford the momentum to capture the lead. Biffle took the lead spot with 12 to go and never looked back getting his first victory of 2008 and vaulting him six spots up to 3rd in the Sprint Cup standings.

GEM Stays With Dodge
Dodge Motorsports officials say published reports that Gillett Evernham Motorsports could move to another manufacturer next season are “pure speculation.” Mike Delahanty, senior manager for Dodge Motorsports programs, joined a national NASCAR teleconference Tuesday to address the report that appeared on Fox Sports, saying that GEM could join ranks with Bill Davis Racing and switch to Toyota next season. “I just want to respond to these recent reports regarding Gillett Evernham Motorsports, specifically regarding Bill Davis Racing and the speculation that GEM would leave Dodge,” he said. “It’s nothing but pure speculation. Dodge and Gillett Evernham have a long history that dates back to our return to Sprint Cup racing. Dodge and GEM have a long-term contract in place, and we plan to continue as partners in NASCAR. “We’re aware and have had discussions about GEM’s interest in adding a fourth car, but there’s been never any discussion about running anything other than anything but a Dodge.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company returned to Atlanta Motor Speedway this week and tested to come up with a new right-side tire that will give Sprint Cup cars more grip when the series visits the track on October 24-26. Participating in the one-day test this Tuesday were the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota (Kyle Busch), #28 Yates Racing Ford (Travis Kvapil) and #66 Haas-CNC Racing Chevy (Scott Riggs). Those teams were selected because they also participated in a tire test at Atlanta on July 21-22, and Goodyear engineers felt that bringing back the same teams and drivers would maintain continuity and build upon the results of the first test. Using the results from that prior test, Goodyear returned with several potential race combinations to evaluate, and chose the one that worked best. “The spring race at Atlanta was the first for the new car on this track, and many people felt we were too conservative in our tire selection,” said Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of global racing. “We have returned to the track twice for testing since the race in order to develop a tire combination that provides a higher level of grip under race conditions. Based upon the data and driver feedback at the test this week, we believe that we’ve found a solid package for the fall race.” Goodyear’s new right side tire code (D-4188) will be paired with the same left-side code (D-4152) the tire supplier brought for the Cup cars to run at Atlanta this past March 7-9.
Goodyear has had a busy week of testing, not only visiting Atlanta but also holding a two-day session with the #6 Roush-Fenway Ford (David Ragan) and #15 Dale Earnhardt Incorporated Chevrolet (Paul Menard) at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday. Upcoming still in 2008 are two tire tests at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Sept. 22-23 and Oct. 6-8) and one each at Homestead-Miami Speedway (Oct. 14) and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Dec. 10-11).(Goodyear PR)(9-18-2008)

Two Talladega rookies, Joey Logano and Ricky Carmichael, were at Talladega Superspeedway today as part of a two-day ARCA RE/MAX Series Open Test. While both drivers have extensive racing resumes, neither had tackled the high banks of Talladega until today. “It’s pretty fun, I’ve had a good time with it so far,” said Logano. “This is my first time doing superspeedway stuff. I did some Proving Grounds stuff with the Cup guys before, but that’s the only similar thing I’ve been through.”
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Carmichael. “Everyone was saying ‘oh we’re just doing single car runs this morning’ but it’s new for me. I’m having a good time. The guys at KHI (Kevin Harvick Inc.) are fast. I’m just enjoying it and trying to get as much seat time as I can.” Although Carmichael has competed at Daytona before, he says the 2.66-mile Talladega seems much larger than the 2.5-mile track in Florida. “My first thought when I came to Talladega was ‘wow this place is huge’. I couldn’t believe how much bigger it was, and I mean, I thought Daytona was big.” Both drivers are expected to compete in the Oct. 3rd ARCA RE/MAX Series 250 at Talladega.(TSS PR)(9-17-2008)

Latest on Petty Enterprises in 2009: frpm a Dodge Motorsports PR/transcript:
Q: WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE FOR THE SECOND PETTY CAR FOR NEXT YEAR?
Robbie Loomis, Executive VP of Racing Operations – Petty Enterprises: There’s no secret that we’ve been working our way through it since we took on our new partners with Boston Ventures and David Zucker – the new CEO. We’re still navigating our way through our direction. It’s obvious that we want to bring in a young guy with Bobby Labonte’s experience and try to build from there. We’re excited about this past weekend. We’re working a lot with Chad McCumbee and will probably take some looks at Chad this season for sure in another five races. We’re excited about where we’re going in the future with that…also excited about having the experience of Bobby Labonte on our side.
Q: WILL KYLE (PETTY) BE IN THE CAR NEXT YEAR?
RL: Oh yeah. Kyle’s going to be back in (the 45 car) this weekend in Dover and some other races lined up for him during the end of the year. We’ll see Kyle and I’m sure you’ll see Kyle out there next year. As everyone knows, with all the sponsorship dependent on how you put all these programs together, we’re trying to work our way through it right now.
Q: IS ONE OPTION NEXT YEAR FOR PETTY ENTERPRISES THREE CARS, ONE WITH A LIMITED SCHEDULE WITH KYLE DRIVING IT?
RL: It definitely is. We’ve had a lot of discussion on that in staff meetings each week. Dave Zucker – our CEO – is trying to put a lot of things together on the sponsorship front and that’s one of the avenues that we’ve talked about. If we could run a third car on a limited schedule – even if it is a minimum of five to seven races – it does help us prepare and get a little bit of information in our circle and also prepare an easier transition when we go to three cars in 2010 when everyone gets this economy rolling again.
Q: AND A THIRD CAR IS CONTINGENT ON SPONSORSHIP?
RL: Yes sir. 100%.(Dodge Motorsports PR)(9-17-2008)

Newman Takes on the Monster

It’s going to take a lot horsepower to tame the Monster Mile this upcoming weekend, said 2008 Daytona 500 Champion Ryan Newman during this week’s edition of the Alltel Racing Podcast. Dover may intimidate other drivers, but the Monster Mile has been especially kind to the driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, as Newman took home the first ever Monster Mile Trophy in 2004. With three wins and four poles at Dover, the 2008 Daytona 500 Champion told fans on the Podcast, “Dover is one of my favorite race tracks of all time, because we typically qualify well and we always race well.”

Newman also revealed that a No. 12 Alltel Dodge hood is available for auction at alltelracing.com – horsepower not included. Check out www.alltelracing.com to listen to this week’s Podcast.

2008 is a year of change for CJM Racing. The team recently announced a new technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing and that they will become part of the Toyota family in 2009. Now to build on that foundation, CJM would like to announce Scott Lagasse Jr. as the new driver of the No. 11 America’s Incredible Pizza Company Chevrolet starting this weekend at Dover. The new partnership includes the remaining seven races in 2008 and a full-time ride in 2009. “We took a long look at available drivers and think Scott is the perfect fit for what we are trying to achieve. He’s had some experience in the NASCAR ranks and feel that this opportunity will give him the stability he needs to grow as a driver,” co-owner of CJM Racing Tony Mullet explained. “We are committed to Scotty and making this program successful.”Scott Lagasse Jr. realized his passion for racing at a very young age. His future was solidified when he entered his first ever race in the NASCAR Modified series and won it from the pole at age 15. From there he took the local dirt and asphalt tracks by storm and then transitioned into the ASA series in 2003, where he had an impressive two-year stint competing in a limited schedule. He has tested and driven in the different NASCAR series and most recently garnered his second ARCA Re/Max series win when he drove the #25 Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet to victory lane at Chicagoland.(CJM Racing) (09-17-08)

The number of laps put down between the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars from Thursday through Saturday’s race at Dover will make a big difference in race performance.“Dover is one of those tracks where the line changes as the weekend progresses,” said Joe Balash, NASCAR Nationwide Series director. “As the Nationwide Series gets laps on the track, and the track rubbers in, the groove becomes wider,” he said. “That gives drivers and crew chiefs more strategy options as the race unfolds. “Drivers will start out running low but as the rubber builds, the groove moves up and makes more lanes giving more options for track position.“This is our last race of the year on concrete, which will be more forgiving as the temperature changes. Asphalt seems to throw more of a curve at crew chiefs as the temperature fluctuates.”(NASCAR) (09-17-08)

On May 31, only one week after his 18th birthday, Joey Logano (No. 20 GameStop Toyota) made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut at Dover. He finished sixth and was perturbed he didn’t do better.Three months later — returning to the track where he also won the NASCAR Camping World Series East title one year ago — his outlook has changed for the better as his career has taken a dramatic turn.“It’s been a little bit of a whirlwind, but I’ve had a lot of fun,” Logano said. “Nothing has really changed, I just think I’ve learned a lot in the last few months and will probably learn a lot more in the future.”In 12 NASCAR Nationwide starts, he’s claimed one win, three poles (tied for the series lead), three top fives, nine top 10s and has been among the top 10 starters 10 times.Last week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, he made the jump to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, debuting in Hall of Fame Racing as part of a partnership with his Joe Gibbs Racing team that includes five more NASCAR Sprint Cup starts. Next year, Logano will take over the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota for departing two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart.(NASCAR) (09-17-08)

The series driver championship isn’t the only title that could have down-to-the-wire implications over the last seven races of the season. The Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award is actually the closest-contested championship in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Landon Cassill (No. 5 National Guard Chevrolet) leads the standings by three points over fellow 19-year-old Bryan Clauson (No. 40 Fastenal Dodge). Cassill’s slight lead is crucial to his rookie award hopes since Clauson is scheduled to compete in at least two more races than Cassill to end the year. “We’ve shown in the past that speed is not an issue for us,” Cassill said. “Personally, a great accomplishment would be finishing on the lead lap. With a solid run like that, we would easily be in position for a top-10 finish. “Bottom line, I need to have a strong run at Dover in order to maintain the Raybestos Rookie of the Year lead.”It’s been a stellar year for the current competitors for the award. Cassill, Clauson and Cale Gale (fourth in the standings) have earned their first career poles and also have posted their first top-five finish. Brian Keselowski (fifth) has run a career-high 10 races and was 15th at O’Reilly Raceway park in July, besting his brother Brad (No. 88 U.S. NAVY Chevrolet) by four places. (NASCAR)
