Stock Car Gazette, Monday, Sept. 15, 2008

Congrats to Jody S. for being the first one to respond. I hope she enjoys her “Pay The Fan” membership. I never had a harder time giving away a prize in all my life.

On a related note, I’d like to welcome everyone to the Google Groups mailing list version of the Stock Car Gazette. I finally got everyone moved over last night. Let me know if there are any issues/problems.

A nasty pit-road scuffle broke out at New Hampshire Motor Speedway following the conclusion of Saturday’s Camping World RV Rental 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. The confrontation was between Red Horse Racing driver David Starr and the Germain Racing crew. There’s a link to video of this confrontation included in this edition of the Stock Car Gazette.

Check it out, along with the latest news and all the weekend’s racing results from the Sprint Cup and Craftsman Truck Series.

Track Trash – New Hamstring

Oh, what a great race. I particularly liked the roles that the 18 and 48 cars played in it. There were other stories intertwined, but few that compared to those. Read the rest at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/1744

Chasin’ Biff Debuts On Ford Racing Website: Greg Biffle is taking on an additional role during the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup – video blogger for Ford Racing.com. ‘Chasin’ Biff’ debuted this week and will continue through Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead Miami Speedway in November. Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion, will post one new blog every Wednesday or Thursday. “When the people at Ford Racing approached me about this opportunity, I immediately jumped on it because this provides another way of bringing the fans a little bit closer to what’s going on in our sport,” said Biffle, who is looking to become the first driver to win championships in NASCAR’s top three divisions. “We want to make these video blogs fun for everyone and create something that will make people want to come back each week to see what we’re going to do next. We’ll talk about the Chase, but we’re also going to do some behind-the-scenes, fun and crazy stuff that I think people will enjoy.” Biffle’s first “Chasin’ Biff” installment features him preparing to go dirt bike riding, showing off a couple of his private vehicles, and executing a massive burnout with his Ford F-450 Super Duty. Next week, in honor of his recent appearance on David Letterman’s show: “Acting Like Letterman.” In addition to his video blog, Biffle is also writing a weekly on-line diary for USA Today. – PCGCampbell For Ford Racing, Press Release

Greg Biffle Wins First Chase Race
Greg Biffle passed Jimmie Johnson with eleven laps to go in the Sylvania 300 Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday to win his first race of the 2008 season. It was his first victory at Loudon and it was Biffle’s 13th career win in 213 tries. It had been 33 races since Biffle last visited Victory Lane, that win coming at Kansas Speedway in September of 2007. “I was holding back at the end there, and then we got those cautions and it closed me up to Johnson — and gave me a shot at him,” Biffle said. “The horse rode today, didn’t it?” — Johnson, who finished second, kind of could see what was coming. “Short runs is what hurt me the most,” Johnson said, “I felt a little vulnerable, and sure enough he got by.”

Carl Edwards was looking for an opening to get past the two leaders but the opportunity never came, he settled for third. Next came Jeff Burton in fourth place with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on his bumper for fifth. Kurt Busch race his way to sixth spot followed by Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick to round out the top ten. Edwards and Johnson are tied for the lead in the Sprint Cup points with 5220 points each with Greg Biffle holding down third place with 5190.

Kyle Busch, points leader when the race started, had an absolutely miserable day. Busch led the first three laps before something broke on his car. Busch fell back to the rear of the field and when the first caution fell, the team found that a suspension part had broken. They attempted to fix it but it never got better. Busch was falling laps off the leaders and after fighting an ill-handling car for most of the race, he spun out and wrecked. It went down hill from there. Busch finished in 34th spot, 13 laps down.

The Sprint Cup Series moves to Dover International Speedway next Sunday September 21, 2008, for the Camping World RV 400. The race is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM / Eastern Time on ABC. The race will also be broadcast live on MRN radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Johnson Lap Leader Of Race
Jimmie Johnson led four times for 96 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in today’s SYLVANIA 300. Johnson has now led at least one lap in 21 of the 27 races for a total of 1,094 laps. He joins Kyle Busch as the only drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to lead over 1,000 laps this season. Johnson trails Kyle Busch by two races (9-7) in the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader standings. Johnson scored a second-place finish in Sunday’s race, .505 behind race winner Greg Biffle. He logged his 10th top-five and 15 top-10 finish of the 2008 season.

Regan Smith Best Rookie
Regan Smith scored a 23rd-place finish and took top Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the eighth time this season. Smith will keep the lead in the Raybestos Rookie standings for the 10th consecutive race. Michael McDowell was the only Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in today’s race. He held the top spot once for one lap and became the first rookie to lead the fall race at New Hampshire since 2006.

Ganassi-Waltrip merger? UPDATE: Car owner Chip Ganassi pulled the plug on Franchitti's team a month ago, in a shocker that left 71 people without jobs. That move by Ganassi has led to intense speculation about Ganassi's NASCAR future. Some of that speculation includes the possibility of some merger between Ganassi and the Michael Waltrip operation, which is also struggling and may be down to one sponsor next season for that three-car operation.(Winston Salem Journal)(7-26-2008)
UPDATE: The hottest rumor floating around the Cup garage this weekend [at New Hampshire] is that Chip Ganassi still is trying to make a deal with another team to keep himself in NASCAR. This week it was supposedly an arrangement with Michael Waltrip Racing, which would expand to four cars and put Montoya in a Toyota.(Yahoo Sports)(9-15-2008)

John McCain thanked NASCAR for its support of the military as he spoke during the prerace drivers meeting Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. McCain was a couple of minutes late, and the drivers and crew chiefs remained in their seats waiting for him after their prerace instructions had ended. When he arrived with NASCAR President Mike Helton, the drivers and crew chiefs gave him a standing ovation. McCain was joined by Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, a major supporter of the candidate. “I just want to say thank you [for the ovation], but most of all I want to thank you for your support for the men and women in the military,” McCain said. “It’s remarkable. It’s uplifting to these young people. When I am in Iraq and Afghanistan, they’re watching you. You are their role models. You are their heroes. And they are ours. So I just want to say that NASCAR and the heroes and the competitors and the teams are supporting the men and women who are serving in the most exemplary fashion – I thank you, God bless you and God bless America.” Security was extra tight for the drivers meeting with everyone attending being checked with a metal-detecting wand. McCain then toured the garage area. The NASCAR hauler was equipped with several cameras pointed in various directions in the garage.(SceneDaily)(9-14-2008)

ON THE HARD RACING WITH JEFF BURTON, WHEN YOU GUYS ARE BOTH GOING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO RACE HARD LIKE THAT KNOWING YOU HAVE TO COME OUT WITH A GOOD FINISH?
“Well I mean we don’t want to wreck each other. I don’t want to hit Jeff; I like him. I thought I had him and I slipped a little bit and he got back by me. It was just great, great racing. I hate that I lost a spot though because every one is important, but it’s fun. He’s a good racer. He’s hard to beat man, just smooth.”

JEFF BURTON, NO. 31 AT&T IMPALA SS – Finished 4th:
A LOT OF HARD RACING UP FRONT, YOU AND JUNIOR RACING EACH OTHER HARD. HOW HARD IS IT GETTING IN THE CHASE NOW KNOWING WHAT IS AT STAKE?
“This is what it’s all about. It’s playoff time now. When it’s 10 to go, 20 to go, 30 to go it’s every man for himself within limits obviously. Dale and I had a great race. We never touched each other; we race each other hard. That’s what it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to be good, hard racing. I think you’ve got nine more races of that coming.”

Smithfield out at Rensi? UPDATE: hearing that Smithfield Foods has notified Team Rensi they will not continue sponsorship beyond this season. The team reportedly laid off several employees Tuesday morning, but will continue to search for sponsorship opportunities for 2009.(9-9-2008)
UPDATE: Bobby Hamilton Jr. said Team Rensi Motorsports will close its doors in December if a new sponsor to replace Smithfield Foods isn’t found by then. Hamilton Jr. is in his second stint with Team Rensi and nearly was without a ride this season until a sponsor was found in early December. Smithfield told the team last Monday it would not return next season, Hamilton Jr. said. Crew chief Chris Wright remains with the team, though a source said nearly half of the team’s payroll was cut via layoffs. Hamilton Jr. blamed the current status of the Nationwide Series for the problems independent teams like Team Rensi are facing. “The series has no identity,” Hamilton Jr. said. “It doesn’t have anything going on, there’s nothing to watch. There’s no drama because it’s all the same stuff.” Hamilton Jr. said he has been “fishing around” for other rides. “I’m about 40 percent, talking to a Cup deal,” Hamilton Jr. said. “I’ve been on the phone several times with a top-notch organization on the truck side. The Nationwide cars, there’s just none out there. Everybody I’ve talked to, if you’ve got a sponsor, they’ll take you. There are some when you could run a handful of races whenever a Cup guy doesn’t want to. I wouldn’t turn my back to that because it’s in really good equipment. I’d like to run full time but if you can’t, you’ve got to take what you can take.” Hamilton Jr. said he even could end up owning his own Nationwide team next season. The five-time series winner isn’t ready to quit driving.(SceneDaily.com)(9-14-2008)

Former driver of the #27, Brad Coleman, was in attendance at the Cup event at NHMS today. Brad’s purpose at this event was to listen in on radio communications between Logano and the #96 team. Coleman left Baker Curb Racing this season to take a driving position with Hall of Fame Racing on the Cup side. Said Coleman,”I’m coming to these races to learn as much as I can from a veteran driver like Ken Schrader, and also Joey today. With Ken, I listen to him on the radio and compare what he says about the car to what I say. When I say the car is loose in, tight in the middle and loose off…it’s really reassuring for me to go to a race and hear Ken Schrader say the same thing. I just want to learn how to communicate with the team better.” Coming off a tire test at Kansas a couple of weeks ago, next up for Coleman is testing the #96 at Lowes Motor Speedway. Asked if he missed anything about Nationwide,”It is fun racing in Nationwide; I miss all those guys-just hanging out with all the regulars. I see most of them every weekend anyway; but, I miss racing against them. “And his run at Michigan? “It was good, I was a little nervous, but once we started I was good to go. My goal was to qualify for the race. My next goal was to get in as many laps as I could, and not cause any wrecks. I did that, so, the next races will be to go out there and improve every week. I spend one or two days a week at the shop; also, getting in good physical condition. Cup races are a lot longer than Nationwide.”(thehotlap) (09-14-08)

The goals for Joey Logano in his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race were simple: stay out of trouble, gain valuable experience, earn the respect of the veteran drivers and finish as many laps as possible. All were accomplished as Logano finished 32nd in the Sylvania 300, completing 297 of the 300 laps in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. The 18-year-old, who grew up in three hours from Loudon in Middletown, Conn., started 40th, but moved to 33rd just 12 laps into the race. However, just past the 15-lap mark, Logano began fighting a tight handling condition on his No. 96 Home Depot/DLP HDTV Toyota Camry. That became the story of his day, as he and the Home Depot/DLP HDTV team could not seem to find the combination that would successfully combat the ill-handling car. “It was a tough one,” Logano said. “We tried hard, but it just wasn’t there the whole time. Deep down inside I really wanted a better finish than that. After our practice session at Richmond (last week), I thought we were going to have a lot better race car than that. We just missed it. We got close to where we needed to be – just too late in the race and we weren’t able to work on it from there.”(TSC) (09-14-08)

Hornaday Doubles Up at New Hampshire
09-13-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Hornaday Doubles Up at New Hampshire Ron Hornaday Jr. continued to push the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship fight, as he captured Saturday’s Camping World 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, surviving a crash-filled afternoon. Hornaday took the lead for good on the 156th of 200 laps around the 1.058-mile oval, making one of his patented banzai starts to blast past Travis Kvapil into the lead and propelling him to victory. All told, Hornaday led nearly three-quarters of the laps in scoring his fifth victory of the season and record 38th of his career. The three-time series champion went on to his second consecutive NCTS victory, but points leader Johnny Benson stayed close, finishing second behind Hornaday and ahead of Kvapil. Unofficially, Benson now leads Hornaday by 74 points with seven laps to go. With qualifying rained out, the field was set by owner points, with Benson’s Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota Tundra on the pole, flanked by the Camping World Chevrolet Silverado of defending series champion Ron Hornaday Jr.

Hornaday Relished Victory
09-13-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com The relief in Ron Hornaday Jr.’s face was as palpable as the emotion was, as he stood in victory lane Saturday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway after winning the Camping World RV Rental 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. But as he choked on his words and fought back his emotions, it was obvious that this victory was about a lot more than simply winning a race.

Kimmel Comes Home for Salem Victory Parade
SALEM IN (9-13-08) – ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Frank Kimmel gave his hometown fans exactly what they came to see – a victory in the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by Advance Auto Parts Saturday night at Salem Speedway.

However, it turned out to be much more than just another win for the local Clarksville, Indiana legend.

“This one’s pretty emotional,” said Kimmel in victory lane. “It’s been more than four years since we’ve won here, and to do it here at home means more than I can say. It’s also my dad’s birthday; he turned 80 today, so this one’s for him. This could not have played out any better for the Kimmel Racing team. We’ve been fortunate to win a lot of races, but this one ranks up there as one of the best – maybe the best.”

Kimmel, in the Clarksville Schwinn Cyclery-Fastline Performance Ford, survived the typical Salem short-track carnage and led the final 62 circuits en route to his ninth win at Salem and 74th series triumph of his career. The victory also puts Kimmel just five wins shy of Iggy Katona’s all-time victory mark of 79.

“The car was really, really good on long runs,” added Kimmel. “The last fifty laps or so I was holding my breath, especially through all of that lapped traffic.”

Matt Carter, in the Stine Seed-Hantz Group Ford, finished second two seconds behind the winner and earned the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie honors. Carter’s father and crew chief Travis Carter won the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race.

“Frank had a better handling car than we did tonight,” said Carter. “But if I had to lose to someone there’s no one else I’d rather finish second to than Frank Kimmel. It was a good run for us but to be honest the car was not that good. I don’t know if we missed on air pressures or what.”

Dexter Bean, with a badly damaged Glock Chevrolet, battled back from a spin on the backstretch that triggered a multi-car pile-up on lap 139.

“It was definitely rough racing but hey, that’s Salem,” said Bean. “I lost it coming out of two and spun on the backstretch and it really should have ended our night. We had a real good racecar and the team got the Glock Chevy back on track so that we could still manage a good run.”

Bean’s machine wasn’t the only car with damage as very few cars went back on the haulers without twisted sheet metal, including championship contenders’ Scott Speed and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr, separated by just 40 points headed into the race.

Stenhouse, who earned his third consecutive SIM Factory Pole Award, was running directly in front of point leader Speed when contact between the two sent Stenhouse’s Aflac Ford hard into the backstretch wall. Stenhouse, after spending several laps on pit road for repair, finally returned to competition, finishing 17th, 26 laps down.

Shortly after Stenhouse wrecked, Speed found himself in the middle of the aforementioned multi-car wreck on the backstretch, which left his Red Bull Toyota with damage all the way around. However, Speed was able to stay on the lead lap and maintain his point lead with just three races remaining.

Sean Caisse, who qualified second in the AISIN Toyota, led the first 85 laps before Speed got around the former leader in heavy lapped traffic. Speed showed the way for 12 circuits before giving it up to Ken Butler III when Speed opted for a pit stop under caution, along with most of the other front-runners. Butler led the next 17 laps before Brett Hudson emerged as the leader on lap 115. Hudson held on for eight laps before Carter, who also pitted with Speed, took control of the top spot on the 123rd lap. Carter’s lead lasted 16 laps before Kimmel slipped past on lap 139. From there, Carter could only watch as Kimmel continually pulled away as necessary.

Justin Allgaier battled brake issues much of the night but still managed to finish fourth in the Hoosier Midwest-AG Tech-Auto Xpress Chevrolet.

Caisse, who was involved in an on-track skirmish with Gabi DiCarlo, finished fifth with a badly bent right front fender that was rubbing against his right-front tire for the final 30 laps. Caisse also earned the Aaron’s Lap Leader award for leading the most laps.

Hudson finished sixth in the Fannon Cable Construction-Double H Hydraulics Chevrolet with John Wes Townley trailing in seventh in the Zaxby’s Ford. Speed held on for eighth. Bryan Silas finished ninth in the Nortrax-PBG Chevrolet. Michael Phelps finished 10th in the Bowen Family Homes Dodge.

Brad Smith, who started 26th and finished 16th, earned the Casite Hard Charger Award.

From Salem, several ARCA RE/MAX Series teams are making their way to Talladega Superspeedway for an ARCA Open Test on September 17th and 18th, 2008. The next ARCA RE/MAX Series race is the Loud Energy Drink 150 on Sunday, September 28th at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The race marks a return to road course racing for the diverse stock car series for the first time since 2001. For more information, visit arcaracing.com.

The Two Faces Of ESPN On Display

Stewart And Earnhardt Slam ESPN
It was just a NASCAR teleconference in a long line of media appearances and interviews to promote The Chase. The 12 drivers were on the line Wednesday when a reporter turned the topic to ESPN. Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. spoke up.
