There was some exciting racing there around the domination by several drivers of the Richmond race. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and found myself rooting for David Ragan to squeak into the Chase as the numbers changed lap by lap.

Johnson Wins At Richmond
Jimmie Johnson held off Tony Stewart in a spirited battle for the lead with 30 laps to go in Sunday’s Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Johnson recorded his fourth victory of 2008 and it was his 37th career win in 245 tries. It also was the second consecutive victory for Johnson. By finishing 12th, Clint Bowyer held on to his spot in the “Chase” — eliminating Kasey Kahne and David Ragan. Tony Stewart held onto his second place but was fuming after the race. It’s been more than a year (37 races) since Stewart has won in the Sprint Cup Series.
Stewart’s teammate Denny Hamlin finished third, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth and Mark Martin fifth. Jeff Burton brought his RCR Chevrolet home in sixth spot followed by Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, David Reutimann and Kurt Busch to round out the top ten. Reutimann led the most laps (104) and recorded his best ever finish in the series.
There were 23 lead changes among 12 different drivers — and there were 14 caution periods for a total of 70 laps. The Sprint Cup Series moves to New Hampshire Motor Speedway next Sunday September 14, 2008, for the Sylvania 300. The race is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM / Eastern Time on ABC. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

J.D. Gibbs said Sunday that Joey Logano will race next week in the Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. As-yet undecided is whether the 18-year-old phenom will be driving the #02 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota he was scheduled to drive this weekend at Richmond International Raceway, or whether he’ll stick with the #96 Hall of Fame Racing ride he’s supposed to be in. If he does drive for HoF, the #96 will carry Home Depot sponsorship, Gibbs said, although he acknowledged he has not talked to Hall of Fame officials about what the final plan will be. “We’ve still got to work out some more details,” Gibbs said Sunday morning at Richmond International Raceway. “Right now, we want the first race to be in the Home Depot car and we’ve got a few options to figure out, but next week, he will be in the car racing.”(SPEEDtv)(9-8-2008)

Red Bull to 3 teams? UPDATE: Jay Frye, who has engineered a solid turnaround at Team Red Bull is back from a post-California trip to the company’s Austrian headquarters, and is reported to be seriously considering moving to the Stewart-Ryan Newman Chevy team next season. According to those close to the situation, Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz wants Frye to put former Formula One driver Scott Speed in a full Cup ride next season, though there is still only sponsorship support for two drivers. #83-Brian Vickers and #84-AJ Allmendinger are the team’s Cup drivers, and Frye wants to keep both. If Frye stays, that would likely mean a three-car team.(Winston Salem Journal), word is that Speed will test at LMS in a few weeks in a #82 Toyota and could make his Cup debut there in Oct.(9-6-2008)
UPDATE: Jay Frye had a “positive meeting” with Red Bull Racing management in Austria, but would not say Sunday whether he’ll remain general manager or leave to run Tony Stewart’s new team. Frye also said the team is not certain AJ Allmendinger will be back in the #84 Toyota next season. “AJ has been a Red Bull athlete for a long time. They are very fond of AJ,” Frye said before Sunday’s race at Richmond International Raceway. “We are going through different scenarios right now and should know something shortly.” Asked if it was possible Allmendinger would not be back, Frye said “Yes, that’s one of the scenarios.” The future of the team has been widely discussed since an ESPN report earlier this week that Stewart had asked Frye to manage Stewart-Haas Racing next season. The report came as Frye was traveling to Austria to discuss the direction of the race team. Among the issues was Allmendinger, who is in the second and final year of his Red Bull contract. He’s shown marked improvement this season under Frye, and the entire Red Bull organization has been considerably better since Frye’s late January arrival.
Frye would not directly comment on the reported Stewart offer. “I’m very happy where I’m at,” Frye said. “Obviously there is a lot going on in the sport right now, there are a lot of flattering things being said and a lot to think about, but I’m very happy where I’m at.” Toyota Racing Development president Lee White said he was told by Red Bull executives the meeting was positive and Toyota officials are optimistic Frye will remain with the team. Red Bull struggled in its first NASCAR season last year, when team leadership operated with a Formula One mentality. The addition of Frye, a NASCAR veteran who spent 12 years running the team that merged with Dale Earnhardt Inc. last year, has put Red Bull on the right track in its second season. Brian Vickers is 15th in the standings, Allmendinger is no longer failing to qualify for races and former F1 driver Scott Speed is quickly adapting to stock cars under Frye’s developmental plan. “I think (Frye leaving) would be a significant challenge for their evolution and improvement as a team,” White said. “We are absolutely thrilled with their progress and that they are fulfilling their possibilities.” Frye said it was his first trip to Austria, where the energy drink maker is based. “The NASCAR program is very important to their business,” he said. “As a company, I wanted to understand where we’re at, what’s in store for the future. There is a lot going on with the company that is really good. We’ve made good progress. It was a very positive meeting. No matter what happens, it is great to have Red Bull part of this sport.”(ESPN/AP)
AND Jay Frye, whose work this season as general manager for Team Red Bull has helped spark a turnaround, is just back from a trip to Salzburg, Austria, the home of Red Bull. And Frye says he laid out for owner Dietrich Mateschitz all the various team options for 2009 – including possible expansion to a three-car team, or what Frye called “a 2-1/2-car team,” with a new Scott Speed team running a partial Cup schedule as teammate with Brian Vickers and AJ Allmendinger. But Frye also pointed out that Allmendinger’s contract is up at the end of this year, and Frye said the owner has not been particularly enthusiastic about funding a full three-car operation. “We should know more in the next week,” Frye says.(Winston Salem Journal)(9-8-2008)
Did Not Finish Streak and stats: #29-Harvick has been running at the finish in 70 consecutive races, the longest current streak and a NEW modern era record, next up is #07-Bowyer at 63 consecutive races. The all-time record for the longest streak of NOT having an DNF is 84 races held by Herman Beam from April 30, 1961 thru March 10, 1963. Kevin Harvick held the modern era (1972-present) record at 58 (10/3/2002-8/1/2004) unil he broke it himself in 2008. Next up is Jeff Gordon at 56 and Dale Earnhardt at 53 [Indy in 1996 thru Martinsville in the spring of 1998.(9-7-2008)
Dodge not to support Truck Series in 2009: The struggles in the U.S. automobile sales market are trickling down to racing, with the latest blow coming to the Truck Series. Dodge will not provide any financial support to any teams in the series in 2009, Dodge Motorsports senior manager Mike Delahanty said. "We'll have no factory-funded teams," Delahanty told ESPN.com. Delahanty said the manufacturer's involvement with the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series is unaffected.

Johnson wins, maybe shows a few more Chase cards
Playoff field set with Sunday's outcome
RICHMOND - Jimmie Johnson plans to start the Chase for the Sprint Cup worried about the 11 other guys. That'll work right out, since those 11 guys will undoubtedly be fairly wary of the two-time defending champion in NASCAR's playoff.

During the Sunday night Speed Report, Ray Dunlap reported that Donny Lia, along with his sponsor, are talking to BDR about a possible ride.(9-7-2008)
BHR-VA to one team? employees released? UPDATE 3 Dodge confirms pulling series support in '09: Hearing that several employees from Bobby Hamilton Racing-VA were released yesterday, and that they will be running the #18 driven by Dennis Setzer and sponsored by Dodge Dealers. Status of the #4 undetermined at this time.(8-30-2008)
UPDATE: BHR to One Truck for Now: Over the recent break in the truck series schedule the management at Bobby Hamilton Racing decided it was best to shift its focus to the #18 effort and have ceased operations on the #4 entry until further notice. "It was a very tough business decision that was thought long and hard about amongst the owners," said Lori Hamilton, Chief Operating Officer of BHR. "This allows us to pull from our many resources and direct all our focus to the #18 team. Our goal is to win more races thus giving us more exposure and finish this season in the top 10 in points."(BHR-VA PR)(9-3-2008)
UPDATE 2: Dodge not renewing sponsorship in '09: The Dodge livery brightly splashing the #18 for the remainder of the year belies the fact that the manufacturer is not renewing its support of the team at season's end. [Lori] Hamilton said the team has been in talks with Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota for 2009. “Dodge has been a good partner to us and they’ve built BHR with Bobby to what it is today, so there’s a lot of loyalty there,” Hamilton said. “I’m sure that another manufacturer would look at how long we’ve been with them, and that’s attractive to them.”(ESPN.com)(9-5-2008)
UPDATE 3: The struggles in the U.S. automobile sales market are trickling down to racing, with the latest blow coming to the Craftsman Truck Series. Dodge will not provide any financial support to any teams in the series in 2009, Dodge Motorsports senior manager Mike Delahanty said. “We’ll have no factory-funded teams,” Delahanty told ESPN.com. “When times are tough, there are certain things that are lower on the priority list than others.” Dodge had been a powerhouse in the Truck Series earlier this decade, winning 46 of 99 races from 2001-04 and championships with drivers Bobby Hamilton in 2004 and Ted Musgrave in 2005. In recent years Dodge has scaled back its involvement, with only Bobby Hamilton Racing-Virginia receiving money from the manufacturer this season. Dodge informed the team that its factory support would end this season, and BHR-VA has talked to Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota about a switch for 2009. Delahanty said the manufacturer’s involvement with the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series is unaffected.(ESPN.com)(9-6-2008)
Keselowski to run Phoenix truck race: Phil Parsons reported during the Gateway qualifying broadcast on SPEED/TV that Brad Keselowski is scheduled to drive the #19-Brad Keselowski Racing Chevy for the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix Int’l Raceway.(9-6-2008)
Christopher in a Billy Ballew entry at NHMS? UPDATE 3 White in the #15 at NHMS & Martinsville: Ted Christopher has been in negotiations to drive the second entry for Billy Ballew Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series New Hampshire 200 on Sept. 13 at NHMS. “They called me about a month ago,” Christopher said. “We’re pretty close. I talked to them the other day and asked them if this was still a reality deal if we came up with the money and they said yes. He said they still want me to drive there.” Christopher, a longtime regular on the Whelen Modified Tour and the all-time winningest driver at Stafford Motor Speedway, has made numerous starts in Sprint Cup events at New Hampshire, but always in low end equipment for car owners just looking to get starting money. With Ballew Motorsports Christopher would be in equipment likely capable of running up front.(Hartford Courant)(8-2-2008)
UPDATE: Ergon Racing and Marc Mitchell are not scheduled to be in the #15 in Loudon and Martinsville. The team will be making an announcement in the near future as to who will be driving in those two events.(Billy Ballew Motorsports PR)(8-3-2008)
UPDATE 2: Hearing that Jason White will be driving for Billy Ballew at New Hampshire. Also hearing that Bobby Dotter will be driving the #08 at Loudon with the gunbroker.com sponsorship.(8-30-2008)
UPDATE 3: During the qualifying broadcast on SPEED/TV, Ray Dunlap confirmed that Jason White will driving the #15 BBM Toyota at both New Hampshire and Martinsville.(9-6-2008)

Hornaday Wins Big at Gateway
09-06-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Hornaday Wins Big at Gateway Three-time and defending NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday Jr. scored a dominating victory in the Camping World 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Gateway International Raceway Saturday afternoon. And in the process, he served notice that he has not conceded the 2008 NCTS title to points leader Johnny Benson. Hornaday was the man from the start, leading 112 of 160 laps as he scored his fourth NCTS victory of 2008 and the 37th of his storied career. Finishing behind Hornaday were Dennis Setzer, Benson, Todd Bodine and Jack Sprague. The action began at the drop of the green flag, as Hornaday moved his Camping World Chevrolet Silverado from its second-place qualifying spot into the lead, going high to pass the No. 18 Royal Gate Dodge Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Setzer, the Keystone Light pole-winner. The first caution came when Bobby East wrecked his Zaxby’s Ford F-150 at the exit of Turn 2 on Lap 6, bringing out the yellow flag. East spun coming out of the corner and backed his Ford into the inside backstretch wall, necessitating the caution period

Lagasse Holds off Stenhouse, Speed at Chicagoland
JOLIET IL (9-6-08)—Scott Lagasse, Jr., in the no. 25 Venturini Motorsports-prepared Nicholson Group-Hamptons Luxury Homes Chevrolet, held off ARCA RE/MAX Series championship contenders Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Scott Speed in a two-lap shoot-out to win the Chicagoland ARCA 200 Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway.
“I knew we had one shot,” said Lagasse when asked about leading Stenhouse to the line on the final restart. “I knew that if he broke free I would have to catch him and run him down. I was a little concerned because I didn’t want to give up the track position. For four days of work on the Venturini’s part, I am very impressed. It’s neat for me to come here and win; and for them, it’s special because it’s their hometown.”
Lagasse’s crew chief Billy Venturini earned the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race Award, especially gratifying for the entire Venturini family, who are natives of the Chicago area.
Despite dominating much of the race leading 67 of 136 laps, Stenhouse settled for second in the No. 99 Aflac Ford one length away, earning the Aaron’s Lap Leader Award. He was also the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie.
“Our cars tend to be really good on long runs and I just bobbled there on the restarts and let him get by me a little bit,” said Stenhouse. “We were a little bit tight on that last run and I just couldn’t recover. I spun the tires and that was about it. I thought we were going to get him there on that last restart. He was trying to protect his line and we just didn’t get it.”
Speed, after a side-by-side battle with Justin Allgaier on the last lap, finished third in the Red Bull Toyota. Speed also earned the Klotz Halfway Leader honors and the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race Award.
“It was a tough race,” said Speed. “The car was okay for five laps and then would get really unstable so we did the best we could with what we had today. We have four races left and we just need to focus on bringing the best cars to the track.”
Allgaier, in the Hoosier Midwest-AG Tech-Auto Xpress Chevrolet, settled for fourth with Jesse Smith trailing in fifth in the Lloyd’s BBQ-Spam-Hormel-Jones Group Dodge.
Stenhouse, who earned the SIM Factory Pole with a new one-lap track record of 180.030 mph, swapped the lead five times with Speed throughout the race while Lagasse, who started second, fell back with an ill-handling car. But after several pit stops, the first of which was unscheduled, the Venturini crew breathed new life in the car, which positioned Lagasse among the leaders just in time to challenge for the win late in the race.
Bryan Silas battled from one lap down to finish sixth in the Nortrax-Shell Rotella T Chevrolet, the last car on the lead lap. Silas, who started 28th, also earned the Casite Hard Charger Award as a result.
Rookie Ben Stancill finished a career-best seventh in the TRG Motorsports-Dolce Vita Chevrolet. Justin Lofton was eighth in the Lofton Cattle Dodge. Jeremy Clements and Ken Butler III finished ninth and 10th respectively.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series, widely regarded for a diverse season schedule, will switch gears from speedway racing to short track racing next weekend when the series heads to the Salem Speedway short-track in Southern Indiana for the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by Advance Auto Parts. The 200-lap race is set to roll off at 7:15 p.m. Local Time on Saturday, September 13th. For tickets, call (888) 246-7223.
Top-10 ARCA RE/MAX Series Points After The Chicagoland ARCA 200 at Chicagoland Speedway (9-6-08); 1) Scott Speed 4125; 2) Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 4075; 3) Matt Carter 3965; 4) Frank Kimmel 3880; 5) Justin Allgaier 3860; 6) Tom Hessert III 3385; 7) Ken Butler III 3350;
