I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend! As seems to be the way, the Irwin family’s was unusual… spent Sunday in the ER with my wife, who did something to her knee. We will have to see an orthopedic doctor to find out more. For those of you who do so, your prayers are appreciated… again.

Track Trash – Cauliflower-ornia
by: Racing Maniac
A nice race….if you like to see JJ spreading exhaust fumes over the rest of the competitors.
I’m using the word ‘competitors’ loosely, cuz most of ‘em ended up 2 laps down. In that respect it was a strange race, cuz no one ended up 1 lap down….they were all 2 laps down (or more).
We NA$CAR fans need to see some beatin’ and bangin’. If we’re lucky it’ll happen next weekend. Read more of this at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/1656

Fonta-stic!
by: Mike Wells
Jimmie Johnson was not just the class of the field Sunday night, he overpowered it , in route to his third victory of the season at the Auto Club Speedway. The focus would soon shift from Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch to Jimmie Johnson as his lead laps started piling up. He would end up leading 227 of the 250 laps and averaged 165.68 mph.. The two-time reigning Cup champion, Johnson had earned the pole with a lap of 180.397 miles per hour. He clearly had the strongest car as he stormed back every time he relinquished the lead. Jay Frye May Go To Stewart Haas Racing
Longtime Sprint Cup Series team executive Jay Frye has been offered a contract by Stewart Haas Racing, and is mulling a departure from Team Red Bull before season’s end to accept a management position at SHR, ESPN.com has learned. Sources close to Stewart Haas confirmed Monday that Frye is the man they’ve targeted to run the organization’s day-to-day operations. He is expected to accept, sources said, and would be titled vice president/general manager.
UPS Chooses David Ragan
That’s Racing is reporting that UPS has reached a multiyear agreement with Roush to sponsor the team’s No. 6 Ford driven by David Ragan beginning with the 2009 season. A formal announcement of the move is expected within the next two weeks, sources said Sunday. UPS also considered sponsoring a car with Stewart-Hass Racing and briefly considered sponsoring NASCAR’s Truck series, NASCAR officials had previously acknowledged. Ragan, 22, is in his second full season of Cup and Nationwide competition with Roush and entered Sunday’s race still in the hunt for a spot in this year’s Chase.
NASCAR Drug Policy To Change
NASCAR’s chairman on Sunday said the sanctioning body was a few weeks away from announcing changes in its policy on illegal drugs, which he said will include more testing. Current policy in NASCAR calls for testing when there is “reasonable suspicion” someone is using banned substances. NASCAR officials have approached several teams in recent weeks, using them as sounding boards on ideas for the new policy. A form of random testing is expected, members of several team sources have confirmed.

NASCAR Prodigy Joey Logano on E:60 Tuesday, Sept. 2 The next edition of ESPN’s primetime newsmagazine E:60 on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 7:00pm/et, will feature a round-the-clock look at 18-year-old NASCAR prodigy Joey Logano – at the track, in the pits, on his boat, at home and at play. Starting in quarter-midget cars at age 6, Logano has been ahead of the competition for 12 years. Logano drives in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series, where earlier this year he became the youngest winner ever in the series, taking a checkered flag just three weeks after his 18th birthday. Next year holds a bigger challenge for Logano as he will replace Tony Stewart in the Joe Gibb Racing #20 Home Depot Toyota on the Sprint Cup level. Still, Logano is a kid at heart. E:60 correspondent Tom Farrey spent time recently with Logano for an up-close profile of the young driver many in NASCAR call “Sliced Bread.”(ESPN PR)(9-2-2008)
AT&T Looking at ways to continue marketing to NASCAR fans: AT&T won’t be able to sponsor the #31 Sprint Cup car of Jeff Burton next year, but that doesn’t mean it will be nowhere to be seen around NASCAR tracks. The company is still weighing its options on how to market to NASCAR fans without having its logos on a car. “Obviously having to step away from the Cup Series, we’ve been approached by every other racing circuit out there – teams, drivers, racing leagues,” said Tim McGhee, AT&T director of national sponsorships. “We’re evaluating all of our opportunities right now.” AT&T has spent significant money on advertising as well as sponsoring segments on the Sprint Cup telecasts. “We can’t do anything at the track, but we’re going through our 2009 media planning, and we did a significant media buy on Fox, TNT, ABC, ESPN [this year],” McGhee said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we retained a presence on the broadcast because it does deliver a very desirable audience to us.”(SceneDaily.com)(9-2-2008)

Johnny Davis Motorsport’s new Car of Tomorrow is scheduled for it’s first test on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 8 & 9, 2008) on the Richmond track after this weeks Nationwide race. Danny Efland, the team’s regular driver will share time with a couple of other more experienced drivers in shaking the car down. Although some of the bigger teams have already privately tested their COTs, this will be the first NASCAR sanctioned test. It is believed that the JDM Chevy will be the first attempt by one of the smaller independent teams to get a jump on the future with a COT. The COT may be used as early as the middle of the 2009 season on a limited basis but is expected to be required for 2010. Visit them online at www.dannyefland.com. (JDM) (09-01-08)
NASCAR Nationwide Series:Las Vegas-MC2 (pronounced MC Squared) Energy Drink Racing (Entry no. 14 in the NNS) ; (Stock trading symbol 1Bi) President and CEO Ronald Serota announced today that his team is looking forward to completing its negotiations to merge its stock car team with another NNS or Sprint Cup team as early as September 30, 2008. At the time of the pending merger, MC2 Energy Drink Racing believes it will also complete the financing necessary to run a team made up of two or three entries. The Company also intends to run three entries in the Sprint Cup in 2010. Serota states that, “We are carefully looking at the possibility of one experienced driver as well as a driver coming up from the Diversity Program of NASCAR or its licensees.” The Company is hopeful that it will acquire sufficient owner points to be guaranteed to run at least one of its entries in the first five races of its full-time 2009 season rather than having to “go or go home” on qualifying speed.(MC2) (09-01-08)

Dirt Track Master Kimmel Dominates on DuQuoin Mile Dirt
DuQUOIN IL (9-1-08) – Other than a brief late-race threat from Patrick Sheltra, Frank Kimmel decimated the competition in the 56th Southern Illinois 100 Monday afternoon at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, leading 96 of 102 laps en route to his 73rd career ARCA RE/MAX Series victory, and fifth at DuQuoin.
“I’m pretty tired,” said Kimmel after the race. “That was a long day. I look forward to running well here all year and it means a lot to be able to pick up a win at DuQuoin. That’s two in a row for the Ford Drive One Kimmel Racing team, and we’re feeling real good about that. Didn’t want to see that last caution, but fortunately our Ford Fusion was so good today it really didn’t matter.”
Kimmel, in his own Ford Drive One-Holiday Inn of Mt. Vernon Ford, pulled away as necessary throughout the 100-lap, 100-mile race until the field bunched up for a green-white-checker finish after AJ Fike made contact with the turn three wall on lap 97. Sheltra made a hard charge on the restart and peaked inside of Kimmel coming off turn four for the checkered flag, but fell back one length at the final stripe to finish second in the Ferguson Pipe-FloraGanics Dodge.
“I was trying to give it everything I had but we didn’t have no more,” said Sheltra. “I really don’t think anyone out there had anything for Frank today, not even us on fresher tires. This was his (Kimmel) day, and that’s all there was to it.”
Ken Schrader, in his own Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet, finished third.
“Good effort,” said Schrader. “Basically there were two cars I was racing all day. This is the best racing I’ve seen here at DuQuoin and it seems to just keep getting better every year.”
Dexter Bean, who pitted twice, steered his way to fourth in the final running order in the Glock Chevrolet.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. finished fifth in the Aflac Ford. Stenhouse also set a new one-lap track record in SIM Factory Pole Qualifying with a speed of 109.436 mph, eclipsing the old mark of 108.196 set by Brian Tyler in 2005. Stenhouse also closed to within 75 points of point leader Scott Speed headed to Chicagoland Speedway for next Saturday’s Chicagoland ARCA 200. Stenhouse was also the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie.
Stenhouse led the first lap, but that was all before Kimmel, who started second, passed Stenhouse to lead the second circuit. From there, Kimmel gave up the lead just once for five laps to James Buescher before reassuming command for good on lap 31.
Matt Carter, Kelly Kovski, Speed, Buescher and Bryan Silas rounded out the top-10 respectively.
Kimmel was also the Aaron’s Lap Leader, the Klotz Half Way Leader, and posted the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race. Kimmel’s brother and crew chief, Bill Kimmel, was the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race.
John Wes Townley started 24th and finished 11th to earn Casite Hard Charger honors.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series remains in the state of Illinois for event 17 of the 21-race schedule, the Chicagoland ARCA 200 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, on Saturday, September 6th, 2008. Check SPEED for broadcast times.

Gordon Takes Round No. 1
By Paul Warner

Northern Division Champion wins Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250
Mansfield, Ohio-By looking at the results of the Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park, you’ll see that Benny Gordon started fifth, took the lead on Lap 97 and led to the finish for his fifth win of the season on Saturday night.
But that’s just a small part of what transpired in the opening round of the Championship Series.
After qualifying fifth, Gordon’s team found a problem with the engine of the No. 66n Ford. Rather than switch to a backup car, Gordon chose to patch the problem, hoping the powerplant would make it to the finish. As seconds turned into minutes, Gordon’s team was still working on the car while all the other cars were on the grid awaiting the command to start engines.
“That was my call, and I was catching hell from my team about the decision,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford. “We went back and forth and back and forth about changing the engine. We made those fixes on the engine, waited to the last minute to shut the hood and fired it up. We never looked at it after that. I felt comfortable with the decision and I thought it was going to last.”
Unfortunately for Gordon, the last-minute fix forced him to start last in the 36-car field. It also forced his team into a gutsy pit call.
