Richmond International Raceway Offers to Host Busch/Edwards Demolition Derby

NASCAR announced on Wednesday that it has placed Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards on probation for the next six races in the Sprint Cup Series, as a result of their on-track incident Saturday night at the conclusion of the race at Bristol.

Busch and Edwards violated Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; hitting another competitor’s car after the race had concluded) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book.

The probation takes effect beginning with this weekend’s event at Fontana, Calif.

Executing an adroit bump and run on Lap 470, Edwards passed for the lead and pulled away over the final 30 laps, winning by 1.969 seconds over Busch.

“It’s one of those deals where I couldn’t get by him, I couldn’t get by him, and I just had to ask myself, ‘Would he do that to me?’ Edwards said after doing his trademark backflip off the car in Victory Lane. “And he has before, so that’s the way it goes.”

Unhappy with the way Edwards passed him for the lead, Busch bumped Edwards’ No. 99 Ford after the checkered flag. Edwards bumped back, and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota went spinning (watch video).

“He’ll always come back and say he’s sorry,” Busch said. “He did it at Milwaukee and he’s done it a few other times. It’s just his normal fashion. That’s fine. I’ve grown to know that now.

“You know, to pass a guy, to hit him getting into the corners … is very tired. But that’s what he did. … I had been getting into the corner light all day, and I don’t know, maybe I over-braked and drove myself right back into his nose.”

NASCAR summoned Busch to the sanctioning body’s transporter after the race.

“Let’s make it real clear — I’m not apologizing for it,” Edwards said, citing several instances where he felt like Busch took him out of races to gain positions. “We’re even.

“They keep talking about rivalries,” Edwards added. “We might have one now.”

Grubb to be Stewart’s Crew Chief in 2009? UPDATE: Darien Grubb, engineering manager for Hendrick Motorsports’ #5 and 88 Chevys, is the lead candidate for the crew chief position for Tony Stewart’s #14 Chevy in 2009, sources close to Stewart-Haas Racing told ESPN.com on Saturday. Grubb, those same sources said, has been offered a contract. Stewart-Haas officials declined to comment Saturday. If Grubb ultimately opts to accept Stewart-Haas’ offer, it would add yet another layer to the Hendrick/Stewart-Haas relationship. SHR will run Hendrick chassis and engines — as Haas/CNC Racing currently does — and having an established Hendrick disciple in-house would only increase the crucial line of communication between the two organizations.(ESPN.com)(8-16-2008)
UPDATE: Tony Stewart says he has signed a new crew chief for his Stewart-Haas racing #14 Chevy for next season but could not yet reveal who it is. Answering questions from race fans at Texas Motor Speedway Tuesday night, Stewart told the crowd the deal was done Monday evening. Stewart also says he has a verbal commitment from a sponsor for his second car and driver Ryan Newman, but the deal is not quite ready to be announced.(PRN’s Garagepass)(8-28-2008) Comment here

Latest on the #12 ride: Marty Smith of ESPN reports that he was told by Penske Racing that Brad Keselowski [JR Motorsports in the NNS] was never offered the #12 Dodge [ride] Jonathan Gibson, vice president at Penske, tells [Smith] they’ve spoken with a lot of drivers, but made just one offer — and that’s to the individual they plan to sign. All signs point to that person being David Stremme, but Gibson would not confirm Stremme as the team’s leading candidate.(ESPN.com)(8-28-2008)

Monster to sponsor Robby: been told that Monster Energy Drink will be the sponsor for #7 Robby Gordon Dodge at Auto Club Speedway, see an image of the scheme on my #7 Team Scemes page..(8-28-2008) www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/7cup.htm#diecast

Sherwin-Williams to sponsor Biffle at Kansas: The Sherwin-Williams #16 Ford, driven by Greg Biffle, will race in the Camping World RV 400 at Kansas Speedway which will be held on Sunday, September 28. This opportunity has been made possible as a result of Sherwin-Williams partnership with 3M, Biffle’s sponsor. During the months of September and October, Sherwin-Williams will be featuring a NASCAR Race Promotion in their stores on select 3M products. More info at performancedriven08.com.(PR), see an image of the scheme on my #16 Team Schemes page.(8-28-2008)

California Rookie Notes: #01-Regan Smith was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the August 23 Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Smith scored a 14th-place finish equaling his best effort in 29 Sprint Cup Series starts. He also finished 14th this season at Martinsville Speedway (race No. 6). Smith claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the seventh time in 2008. Regan Smith leads #77-Sam Hornish Jr. by two points (181-179) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the August 31 Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway. Smith has led the Raybestos Rookie standings since the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway (race No. 18), a span of seven consecutive races. Smith has captured Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors in all four Sprint Cup Series short track races this season. A Raybestos Rookie has finished in the top-five in three of the four previous August races at Auto Club Speedway. Brian Vickers (2004) is the only Raybestos Rookie to win a pole in four previous August races at Auto Club Speedway. Kyle Busch became the first Raybestos Rookie to win at Auto Club Speedway when he captured the 2005 Pepsi 500. Busch scored his first Sprint Cup victory by .554 seconds over Greg Biffle and is the only Raybestos Rookie to win in 16 Sprint Cup Series races at the 2.0-mile speedway.(Camp & Assoc/Raybestos), for rookie history, standings and more, see my 2008 Rookies page.(8-28-2008)

Rookie Joey Logano will drive the No. 96 DLP®HDTV Toyota Camry in five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races for Hall of Fame Racing, team officials announced Wednesday. Logano, who is under contract with Joe Gibbs Racing and will drive the No. 20 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in Sprint Cup starting in 2009, will pilot the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota in five Sprint Cup races in 2008, beginning with the Sept. 14 Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. Logano will also drive the No. 96 machine at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City Sept. 28, Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., Oct. 11, Martinsville (Va.) Speedway Oct. 18, and Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth Nov. 2. Logano, 18, will make his Sprint Cup debut next weekend at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway driving the No. 02 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. In 10 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts for Joe Gibbs Racing, Logano has one win (Kentucky Speedway in Sparta), seven top-10 finishes and two poles. Hall of Fame Racing receives chassis, engines and manufacturing support from Joe Gibbs Racing. Veteran Ken Schrader, who started seventh and finished 21st in the DLP HDTV Toyota last weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, will drive the No. 96 Toyota in this weekend’s Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.Schrader will also pilot the DLP Toyota at Richmond International Raceway Sept. 6, Dover (Del.) International Speedway Sept. 21, and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway Oct. 5. Brad Coleman, who has been under contract as a test driver for Hall of Fame Racing since November 2007, will continue to test for the team in the coming weeks. “Ken Schrader brings practical experience and stability to our race team that will help in a lot of ways,” said Garfinkel. “Brad did a great job testing for us at Kansas this week, and Ken will be an asset to Brad as we continue to get him more laps in a Sprint Cup car.” (DLP) (08-27-08)

There’s a very good chance that the Carl Edwards-Kyle Busch (No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota) rivalry may spill into the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
It would be fitting if it did. After all, the roots of the rivalry were set during a NASCAR Nationwide Series race.In his post-race interviews, Edwards thought back to a series race at Richmond International Raceway where Busch punted him out of the way – just like Edwards did to Busch at Bristol.Saturday’s race at Auto Club Speedway is the first chance to see if there are any post-Bristol fireworks. And if there is any leftover animosity, it could certainly play out in California. The two drivers have almost identical statistics at Auto Club Speedway, meaning they should be racing in closed quarters the entire night. Also, their stats are strong, so figure on another battle for the win between the duo.The similarities start with Driver Rating. Since 2005, Edwards has a Driver Rating of 107.7 while Busch has a 107.8. In terms of Average Running Position, Edwards has an 8.901 and Busch has a 8.964. A slightly wider gap exists in the Fastest Laps Run category. Edwards has 83 Fastest Laps Run in California, while Busch has 70 (in fairness, Busch has run two fewer races at the track than Edwards since 2005). In Laps in the Top 15 percentage, Edwards has run 83.5% of the laps among the top 15. Busch has run 77.3% of them in the top 15. The co-main event this Saturday will be between Clint Bowyer and Brad Keselowski, who rank one-two in the series standings. The stats make their duel seem like a huge mismatch in Bowyer’s favor. Bowyer has a Driver Rating of 102.9 in six races there. In his four career races at Auto Club Speedway, Keselowski has just a 49.0 Driver Rating after failing to crack the top 30 in each of his races. (NASCAR)

While Bryan Clauson’s fellow teammates Scott Pruett and Dario Franchitti have been racing the No.40 Fastenal Dodge in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS), he has been doing some racing himself in the United States Auto Club (USAC) Midget Series. He also spent some time following a fellow high school classmate compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. First, Clauson grabbed a win at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway on August 10, which marked his first ever dirt USAC National Midget feature win. Then, he made sure to see how his fellow Noblesville (Ind.) High School classmate David Boudia was fairing in the 2008 Olympic Games. Boudia competed in the 10m Platform Diving competition for the United States in Beijing. Boudia led the United States in the final 10m Platform dive, finishing 10th overall with his fellow United States diver Thomas Finchum finishing 12th.Clauson’s fellow Fastenal Racing teammate Kevin Hamlin will race the No.81 Pat MacDonald Dodge this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. Hamlin is a member of the Fastenal Racing Team, but will drive the No.81 Mahindra Tractors Dodge in the NNS race. (CGRFS) (08-27-08)
