Somebody Needs To Change Their Huggies!
by: Robyn Snell

Bristol seems to be the highlight of the season year in and year out! This year we all had to wait until the final laps to witness the fireworks and it could not have been better! Good ol’ Cousin Carl (aka teeth… horse… flip… whatever you want to call him) served up a spoon full of Kyle Busch’s own medicine and it ran right through him. Time to change Kyle’s “Huggie’s” diaper! 2008 Limited Edition Coin Released to Benefit Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital: The Jeff Gordon Foundation is pleased to announce the release of a 2008 LIMITED EDITION Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital Coin. The one-time-only numbered coin is available now with a $50 donation at the Foundation web site, www.jeffgordonfoundation.org. The coin is part of the Foundation’s ongoing support for the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital, and specifically benefits the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a clinical services area of the hospital. This campaign will provide funding for eight new state-of-the-art Neonatal incubators, with two of those being a special type, GE Giraffe OminBed. These incubators, also known as Isolettes provide a safe, warm environment for premature babies to grow until they reach approximately 4 pounds and can maintain their temperature in a bassinet. “It is of paramount importance that any baby born less than 32 weeks be placed in an incubator with humidity,” said Tinky Whittington, NICU Nurse Manger. “Maintaining good skin integrity is one of the best defenses against infection in the premature infant. The new humidified incubators will protect the fragile premature infant’s skin by keeping the skin soft and supple. In essence, it mimics the environment of the womb.” The LIMITED EDITION Coin will be available now through the end of the year at The Jeff Gordon Foundation web site, www.jeffgordonfoundation.org for a $50 donation designated to the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital. The coin is designed with the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital logo on the front, surrounded by the words “2008 Campaign” and the limited edition number for that coin. The back of the coin contains the Foundation logo and the words, “Determination,” “Courage,” “Perseverance,” and “Strength.” These words are associated with the Foundation and describe the traits that children who are fighting life-threatening diseases teach us. These words can also be found in the hallway of the Children’s Hospital. Make a donation today and help make a difference in a child’s life! This is a one-time-only limited release. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. - The Jeff Gordon Foundation, Press Release

Clinch Scenarios At California
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Burton control their own Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup destiny this weekend. With certain Auto Club Speedway finishes – outlined below – they will join Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards, who have already secured spots in the 2008 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. To clinch a Chase spot, a driver needs to leave Auto Club Speedway with a 196-point lead over 13th place.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Earnhardt is currently 350 points ahead of 13th place. Regardless of any other driver’s finish, Earnhardt will clinch if he finishes: 40th or better
41st or 42nd and leads at least one lap

Jimmie Johnson
Johnson is currently 348 points ahead of 13th place. Regardless of any other driver’s finish, Johnson will clinch if he finishes:
40th or better
41st and leads at least one lap

Jeff Burton
Burton is 274 points ahead of 13th place. Regardless of any other driver’s finish, Burton will clinch if he finishes:
15th or better
16th or 17th and leads at least one lap
20th and leads the most laps

Six other drivers can clinch this weekend as well, but do not control their own destiny. Unlike Johnson, Earnhardt and Burton, all six must increase their current points lead over 13th place in Sunday’s race. Below are those drivers who can mathematically reach the 196-point margin over 13th position this weekend:
Tony Stewart: Is 170 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 26 points.
Greg Biffle: Is 141 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 55 points.
Kevin Harvick: Is 129 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 67 points.
Jeff Gordon: Is 108 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 88 points.
Matt Kenseth: Is 78 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 118 points.
Denny Hamlin: Is 57 points ahead of 13th place and needs to pad his lead by 139 points.
Clint Bowyer, currently 12th in the series standings, cannot clinch a Chase position at Auto Club Speedway under any scenario, assuming David Ragan starts Sunday’s race.

Budweiser Shootout format/rules to be announced: The 2009 Budweiser Shootout will see changes in driver eligibility and race format. Officials from Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR and Anheuser-Busch will outline the changes in a press conference today. Since the race started in 1979, the field has been restricted to pole-sitters from the previous season and past event winners. With the Coors beer brand now sponsoring NASCAR’s pole awards, Budweiser wanted to change the eligibility requirements for the Shootout. The Shootout will remain an invitation-only, non-points, sprint event but will see several tweaks.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(8-26-2008)

Kyle Busch wins at Milwaukee: Kyle Busch notched his name to the prestigious list of winners at the legendary Milwaukee Mile by driving to his first career victory at the facility Sunday afternoon in the “Wisconsin All Star 100 with Matt Kenseth” super late model race that co-headlined the Governor’s Cup Weekend. Busch fielded his own super late model to race against Kenseth and the touring stars of the ASA Midwest Tour. Kenseth returned to his home state to defend his victory earned last August in a 50-lap super late model event. Fresh off his second place finish in the Sprint Cup Series race in Bristol, Tenn. the night before, Busch arrived at The Mile early Sunday morning ready to race. He set the pace in practice, beat Kenseth for quick time in the 39-car field and started 11th with the series-mandated inversion.(more at the Milwaukee Mile site)(8-26-2008) snipurl.com/3juxd-gazete

Last week’s recap
Ryan Newman’s number next season will be 39, not the previously announced 4. David Reutimann will return to Michael Waltrip Racing but in the No. 00 Toyota. Casey Mears will be with Richard Childress Racing in ‘09. Travis Geisler replaced Chris Carrier as Sam Hornish Jr.’s crew chief. Carl Edwards took the pole Friday at Bristol with a 121.860 mph lap. For the first time, Patrick Carpentier didn’t qualify on time. Saturday night, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was penalized for passing cars before reaching the starting line. He battled back to finish 18th. Around lap 30, Jimmie Johnson had contact with Sterling Marlin and hit the wall. Johnson wound up 33d. The first yellow came on lap 97 when Martin Truex Jr. and A.J. Allmendinger had contact. Kyle Busch, who took the lead on lap 55, dominated. Jeff Burton wrecked and finished 42d. Another Chase contender, Kasey Kahne, finished 40th after getting caught up in a multi-car accident that resulted in a lap 217 red flag. Mears chopped in front of Michael Waltrip and they crashed. Kahne, Hornish, Robby Gordon, Clint Bowyer and Bill Elliott also were involved. A debris yellow, with 48 laps to go, brought all the leaders into the pits. The green waved with 34 to go and Busch’s Toyota ahead of Edwards. On lap 470, Edwards’ Ford bumped Busch in turn one and took the lead. He stayed ahead to win by 1.9 seconds. Busch turned into Edwards on the cool-down lap and Carl returned the gesture. He averaged 91.581 mph with eight yellows for 56 laps. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon.

Lien issued against Fitz Motorsports

In a public posting, the Iredell County (NC) Sheriff’s Department has announced that former driver Joel Kauffman, through the law firm Homesley, Goodman & Wingo, has issued a lien against Fitz Motorsports hemming from his 2006 dismissal from the team. As a result of the legal issues surrounding the dismissal, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department has seized three race cars from Fitz Motorsports with the intent to sell them at auction on September 4th.

Readers interested in purchasing a Nationwide Series car, the three (one road course car, one intermediate car, and one speedway/restrictor plate car) are currently on display at Troutman Tire and Auto Storage, 2727 Amity Hill Road, Troutman, North Carolina 28166. They can be viewed and inspected by visitors at that location on the date of sale.

The actual auction on September 4th will take place at Troutman Tire and Auto Storage, with proceeds going to Kauffman in order to settle a “deficit in pay” from when Kauffman was terminated from the No. 12 (now No. 22) car.

Team owner Armando Fitz issued a statement condemning the actions of Kauffman and his representation, claiming that he “had an understanding with [Kauffman] to remedy a deficit in pay early this week.”

The lien and the seizing of the cars occurred within hours of Fitz making good on Kauffman’s pay deficit.

__________

Statement from Armando Fitz. “I am extremely disappointed with how this situation was handled. I had an understanding with former Driver Joel Kauffman to remedy a deficit in pay early this week. The fact that (law firm) Homesley, Goodman & Wingo exposed a potential situation the day before I intended to make good is upsetting. The deficit was the result of a contract technicality at the time of his termination. Most teams encounter financial roadblocks, especially stand-alone Nationwide teams that have limited funding. But instead of taking the easy way out, we continue to take the high road by rectifying our financial issues. Making good financially while also keeping our commitment to our sponsors to show up at the race track each week is an uphill battle, yet we continue to be competitive week in and out regardless of the how bad things get. I still intend to make good on what I owe Joel this week. But for Homesley, Goodman & Wingo to expose me by using the power of the media and websites that my peers, sponsors and potential future sponsors frequent is what bothers me the most. I’d like to apologize to my sponsors and employees who are indirectly affected by this negativity, and thank them for their continued support and hard work.”(8-25-2008) www.jayski.com

Bryan Clauson is back in the No. 40 Dodge for the first time in four races. He was born in Carmichael, Calif. before moving to Indiana at age 10, and has shown tremendous improvement since his track debut in February when he finished 34th. Since then he has earned his first top-five finish and first pole. Sharing the remainder of the season with teammate Dario Franchitti, he’s in the mix for Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors where he’s third, 13 points behind leader Landon Cassill. He’ll make up ground on second-place Franchitti this weekend, who’s 12 points behind Cassill.(NASCAR) (08-25-08)

With nine races left, it looks like two drivers remain in the championship hunt. Leader Clint Bowyer is 122 points ahead of Brad Keselowski, who got his second win of the year Friday night at Bristol by taking advantage of a Bowyer miscue late in the race. Reigning champ Carl Edwards was second in the standings and closing fast on Bowyer, but finished 37th at Bristol. It was his second-worst finish of the year, and third-worst of his career. He’s now 241 points out of first. But both Bowyer and Edwards have a good history at Auto Club Speedway – Edwards won this race in 2005 and Bowyer leads all series drivers with two poles, both in this event. Keselowski has yet to finish better than 32nd in his four races.(NASCAR) (08-25-08)

Randy Moss Motorsports has hired 18-year-old Marc Davis to drive in NASCAR’s Craftsman Truck Series beginning Sept. 6 at St. Louis, and for a total of “probably about six races this year,” Davis said Monday in a telephone interview. Davis is widely considered the African American driver nearest to making a major breakthrough in NASCAR. But his father, Harry Davis, said the deal as it came together “was never about diversity, as many would play it up to be. It’s about dollars.” Davis received special permission to drive for Moss from J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, where Davis has been a development driver alongside Joey Logano for the past two years. Harry Davis said the deal came together quickly because Marc brought his own sponsorship, from Howard University-affiliated radio station WHUR in Washington, D.C. (ESPN.com)(8-26-2008)

Mansfield Motorsports Park to host Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-Take two divisions of the best racers around, dangle nearly $1,000,000 in front of them, mix and stir. It’s a tried-and-true recipe that appeases any racing palette. And the first course will be served at Mansfield Motorsports Park on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250 is the first race of the Championship Series, a four-race playoff that brings both the Sears Auto Center Northern Division together with the Greased Lightning Southern Division to crown the overall Hooters Pro Cup Champion and Miller Lite Rookie of the Year.

Benny Gordon, the Northern Division champion, and Mark McFarland, the Southern Division champion, will come into MMP as the No. 1 Seeds and with a 40-point lead over Michael Ritch and Gary St. Amant, who finish second in their respective divisions.

By winning their divisions, McFarland and Gordon have a little breathing room, but both can have the air knocked out of them with a poor run in the Sears Auto Center 250.

“Having that 25 point bonus [for winning the division] really helps you out,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford. “It almost gives you a mulligan, but it doesn’t mean you can just ride around and win the title. There’s going to be a lot of stiff competition in the Championship Series. I think you’ll have to win at least one race to have a shot at the title.”

If that’s the case, it could be an interesting four-race shootout.
