Stock Car Gazette, Friday, August 22, 2008

Well, that (FEEDBURNER) didn’t exactly work like I thought it would, did it? Silly me, I thought the e-mail would be sent EARLIER THE SAME DAY, and not ALMOST the next day.

I asked for 7-9AM delivery and I got 7-9PM delivery. Maybe they’re on Chinese time?

So, anyway, those 1200 or so of you procrastinators out there who have not subscribed to Feedburner…. HOLD OFF. I know this is going to be hard for you, but try. I’m going to have to explore some other options.

In the meantime, you can ALWAYS read the very latest daily NASCAR news right here in the web version of the Stock Car Gazette…

Watched some sprint car racing at the Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania Tuesday night. Tony Stewart finished fifth after starting on the pole, Kasey Kahne was ninth and Dave Blaney has mechanical ills and finished twenty-third. It was the first time Tony Stewart had ever ran Williams Grove in a sprint car, but had driven a modified a few years ago at the Grove.

Tony thrilled the fans in his heat race during a yellow flag, he gave us two perfect donuts.

And most of all, the three NASCAR greats spent some time with an American wounded Iraq War veteran and had a photo session with him. A Williams Grove fan named Ross ran a fund raising drive to get the veteran “Fred” to the track with an aide from the Lancaster Pennsylvania Veteran’s Medical Center.

Info on the sprint car race can be obtained on www.WilliamsGrove.com website.

Developer’s plan : A $200 million NASCAR - ready track in Big Lake, MN
PAUL WALSH, Star Tribune

A state-of-the-art motorsports track complex, envisioned to attract the biggest names in racing, is being proposed for 400 acres in the Big Lake area.

The $200 million facility would be built for 90,000 fans and could expand to more than 150,000, said the developer, International Motorsports Entertainment and Development Corp. of Coon Rapids.

NASCAR cracks down on `squeaky-clean’ Gibbs crew
Toronto Star - Ontario, Canada
CHARLOTTE, NC–NASCAR’s latest attempt to reel in the rule-breakers aimed at an unfamiliar target: the normally squeaky-clean Joe Gibbs Racing. …

Gibbs Adds To Penalties
In a statement, Gibbs said the team would impose additional fines on Rogers, Ratcliff, car chiefs Dorian Thorsen and Richard Bray, engine tuners Michael Johnson and Dan Bajek and crewmember Toby Bigelow. “A poor decision was made by some key members of our organization, and 100%% of the blame rests with us,” Gibbs said. Team President J.D. Gibbs says Rogers and Ratcliff, along with other guilty crewmembers, will pay the $100,000 in NASCAR fines without aid from the team. Gibbs said teams acted on the direction of Rogers and Ratcliff when magnetic spacers were placed beneath the gas pedals of their Toyota Camrys before a NASCAR horsepower test following Saturday’s race at Michigan International Speedway. NASCAR inspectors discovered and removed the magnets before testing. After getting an accurate reading, NASCAR reapplied the magnets, tested the cars again and found results were skewed. “It called for a serious reaction,” NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said.

Texaco Will Leave NASCAR
Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates will need to find another sponsor for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2009 because Texaco sponsorship will dry up at the end of the season. Texaco/Havoline is leaving NASCAR and therefore will not return to the No. 42 next season, Ganassi officials said Tuesday. Ganassi is now looking for sponsors for Montoya for half of next season. Wrigley’s will sponsor the other half, as it has done this season. The No. 40 team with driver Dario Franchitti was shut down earlier this year when no sponsors could be lined up.

Michigan Ratings 3.9
ESPN says its coverage of Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway earned a 3.9 Nielsen Media Research rating. Last year’s race aired on ESPN2 on a Tuesday morning because of rain, so direct comparisons aren’t possible. That race earned a 1.7 rating. The cable network also says ESPN2’s coverage of the Saturday’s Carfax 250 Nationwide Series race at Michigan earned a 1.3 household coverage rating, up from 1.2 in 2007.

Wimmer out at RCR after 2008:#29-Scott Wimmer, who combined with Jeff Burton to give Richard Childress Racing the 2007 Nationwide Series owners’ title, isn’t part of the team’s plans for ‘09, he said Thursday. Despite his status as a part-timer, the 32-year-old from Wausau [Wisconsin] has won as many races as the rest of the Chidress drivers so far this season - one - but his chances presumably were hurt by his inability to take a checkered flag last year in a car with which Burton won five times. Wimmer was a candidate for Childress’ fourth Sprint Cup team but wasn’t the choice of sponsors.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(8-22-2008)

More about the Driven to the Outdoors schemes: Realtree will announce [Friday] a sweepstakes that will put Sprint Cup drivers in camo-wrapped cars and give fans a chance to win a new Chevy truck, racing and hunting trips, free gasoline and other prizes. Chevy Driven to the Outdoors program will be launched this week as NASCAR’s premier drivers roll into Bristol Motor Speedway. Three cars in Saturday night’s Bristol field will have camo patterns incorporated into their regular sponsorships. #07-Clint Bowyer, #1-Martin Truex Jr., #15-Paul Menard will all be sporting the new look. Bowyer, who drives the Jack Daniels car, will have Realtree’s snow pattern. The sweepstakes is sponsored by Chevrolet, Jack Daniels, Menards, Motorsports Authentics, Bass Pro Shops, Shell Oil Company and Realtree. In addition to the Bristol race, #29-Kevin Harvick will drive a camo car in Concord, N.C. on Oct. 11. When the series comes to Talladega on Oct. 5, Mike Wallace will drive a Realtree sponsored [#33 Chevy] car for Richard Childress Racing. That car will be an experimental car for the 2009 Daytona 500, Realtree President Bill Jordan said.(Ledger Inquirer)(8-22-2008)

Sauter has Cup ride for next 4 races: Johnny Sauter has a full schedule in the coming weeks of NASCAR Sprint Cup competition. Sauter will pilot the #08 FUBAR Dodge this week at Bristol and next week at Auto Club Speedway. Then, he will get back behind the wheel of the #70 Haas CNC Racing Chevy for the following two events at Richmond and New Hampshire. “I’m definitely looking forward to the next few weeks of racing,” Sauter said. “As a driver, I’m just happy people think of me when they have openings to fill, whether it be for a few races or a single event. I’m still looking for a full time opportunity in 2009, but in the meantime I’m happy to be busy and just thankful for the chance to contribute to these organizations.”(PR)(8-21-2008)

New sponsor for Robby at Bristol: There will be a new look under the lights at this Saturday’s Sprint Cup Series race at the Bristol Motor Speedway on Robby Gordon’s #7 car - his Dodge will feature the logo and shimmering brilliant look of Planet Color the custom color paint system from Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp. (SWAFC). Gordon has used the brand’s coatings for years. Now, for this race, his car will host the gleaming Planet Color orange logo and be joined by that of Barrett-Jackson (the leading specialist in providing products and services to classic and collector car owners and automotive enthusiasts around the world), along with the team’s #7. As a result, their trademark brands will all be featured against the completely flat-black Charger’s color scheme.
Planet Color has been a tremendous hit among custom automotive enthusiasts, painters and shop owners alike for several years now. Made from a series of optimally enhanced coatings containing special combinations of highly reflective additives, Planet Color offers stunning, radical, multi-dimensional finishes that are color shifting, iridescent, illuminated and shimmering in their texture. With Planet Color, custom painters can mix as little, or as much paint, for their exact customization project needs, and because of its refined repeatability it guarantees an exact match every time. Planet Color is available at NAPA Auto Parts and SWAFC branches throughout North America. New SAFER barrier installed along LVMS backstretch: Construction crews spent much of this week installing SAFER barrier along the inside wall of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway back straightaway. “Speedway Motorsports is committed to driver safety at all of its speedways,” said LVMS general manager Chris Powell. “Following this year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup event, we consulted with NASCAR officials and our own engineers. We all agreed that installing the barrier on the backstretch was the proper course of action.” During this year’s Sprint Cup event at LVMS, #24-Jeff Gordon made contact with the wall in the area that is now protected by the SAFER barrier. The final panels of the barrier were put in place Thursday morning. The new SAFER barrier covers 1,700 feet of the inside backstretch wall. SAFER barriers now cover 7,800 feet of the retaining walls around the 1.5-mile superspeedway. The first event on the superspeedway with the new barrier will be the Qwik Liner Las Vegas 350 Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday, Sept. 20.(LVMS PR)(8-22-2008)

DIS ’superstretch’ to be closed for 400 next year: The 57,000-seat “superstretch” grandstand, which begins just off Turn 2 and runs about halfway down the back straightaway, will be closed for next July’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. The only grandstand tickets sold will be for the 110,000-seat stands that run the length of the front “dog-leg” from Turn 4 to Turn 1. “We did the math,” DIS track president Robin Braig said Wednesday. The two large Jumbotron television monitors, which face the backstretch seats during race events, reportedly cost about $200,000 to rent. When Speedway officials included the costs of additional shuttle buses and manpower needed to manage a race-day event, closing those seats became a viable option. “We’re trying to keep the costs down on tickets,” Braig said. “When we open the superstretch, there’s everything from concession stands, cleanup crews, parking lots with buses and trams, the two huge Jumbotrons . . . Add up all that for the amount of people who are sitting back there, we just said, ‘Hey, let’s try to get everybody in the best seats we have, and try to hold costs down, especially since the demand for that area is lower than in past years.’ ” In an effort to soften the blow for those fans who actually prefer the backstretch to the front, DIS officials are highlighting the virtues of the main grandstands.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(8-22-2008)

Shock Doctor, Inc. Brings Safety Innovation to Motorsports
As Sole Manufacturer of Eject Emergency Helmet Removal System

MINNEAPOLIS, (August, 21, 2008) – Shock Doctor, Inc. is proud to announce its work with Bell Racing Company, as the first helmet manufacturer to provide racers with Shock Doctor’s Eject Helmet Removal System, which provides emergency neck and spine protection after a motorsport crash. Answering the call for improved safety equipment at all levels of racing, drivers will now be able to purchase a Bell Auto Racing helmet with Shock Doctor Eject Helmet Removal System factory installed.

As the leaders in the development of sports protective gear, Shock Doctor uses advanced technology to guard athletes from injury. The Eject Helmet Removal System is a unique and advanced safety system that allows for quick emergency removal of a helmet, helping to prevent a possible increase in neck and spine injuries to a racer. Shock Doctor manufactures the small Eject plastic bladder and tube system that fits into a special top pad of selected Bell Racing helmets. By using a separate portable air inflation device, the bladder is simply inflated, filling space between the head and the top of the helmet, gradually pushing the helmet off of the head, rather than pulling the helmet off from outside, which, even with the head and neck stabilized, can increase the possibility of damaging head and neck movement. The device is so discrete; there is no compromise in the fit or performance of the helmet.

“Shock Doctor is thrilled to be furthering our relationship with Bell Racing through the Eject Helmet Removal System,” said Patrick Lynch, motorsport director for Shock Doctor, Inc. “Motorsports racers need to be fitted with gear that’s equal to the technology of the car or bike they are driving. Bell shares our passion in developing the highest-quality, most cutting-edge products for both professional athletes and the everyday competitor. We look forward to a mutually beneficial working partnership for years to come.”

Shock Doctor took on the Eject brand in 2007 and refined the product range. Its work with Bell Racing further expands the opportunity to provide this safety device to motorsports athletes and enthusiasts alike. The Eject Helmet Removal System was developed in 1985 by John Deagan of Long Grove, IL. Over the past ten years, Bell Racing installed Eject in professional driver’s helmets, including organizations like the Indy Racing League, Indy Firestone Lights, NASCAR and Motocross Racing. Shock Doctor and Bell Racing have continued to work together to enhance driver protection, bringing the importance of this technology to the fastest tracks and riders out there.

“Shock Doctor shares the same enthusiasm as Bell in carrying-out the concept of inventor, John Deagan, to incorporate Eject into auto racing helmets,” said Kyle Kietzmann, general manager for Bell Racing Company. “It isn’t about outpacing the competition when it comes to injury prevention. Our work with the professional drivers we sponsor has proven successful, and Shock Doctor’s innovation will only increase the number of sanctioning bodies that are considering making the Eject Helmet Removal System mandatory for competitors. Shock Doctor possesses the quality and industry stature needed to extend this innovation into all levels of racing and provide amateur racers with the opportunity to purchase a helmet.”

The Eject helmet removal system is offered at $99.95. The retail price includes installation. The installed kit will be available for sale on August 11th, 2008 by special order and can be purchased through Shock Doctor, Inc. and the Bell Racing dealer network. No helmet and no helmet accessory can protect the driver in all accidents. Driving cars on tracks is dangerous. More information is available at www.shockdoctor.com and www.bellracing.com.

NASCAR Nationwide Series:“The memories are good and bad here,” said Harmon, who competes full time in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. “I’ll never forget the incident in 2002, but I’m also thankful that I was able to walk away from it and race here again. Bristol is one of my favorite tracks on the circuit, so that’s why I continue to come back. I’m really excited about this weekend, so while some will be recapping the incident six years ago, I’m thinking ahead to Friday night.”Harmon, the Birmingport, Alabama native can’t rattle the memories of the near-fatal wreck six years ago, but Harmon continues to march forward and looks to put his No. 84 Chevrolet in the hunt under the Friday night lights at BMS. Harmon has good reason to be excited about Friday night. NASCAR Nationwide Series: Friday night’s Food City 250 always is one of the most action-packed races of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season. For Kelly Bires and the No. 47 Bush’s Baked Beans Ford, it’s a chance to go on the prowl. Crew chief Scott Zipadelli knows there’s a good chance Bires’ Ford Fusion will return to JTG Daugherty Racing with some damage. As long as it returns as a Top 10 car, the extra work will be worth it. “Kelly has really adapted well to Bristol, so we’re going to turn him loose,” Zipadelli said. “We hope to keep all the fenders on it, but we know that’s not always easy. That’s the nature of short-track racing. I don’t think there’s any reason not to expect at solid Top 10 finish, especially if we’re the hunters, not the hunted.” (JTG Daugherty Racing) (08-21-08)

Marcos Ambrose notes on Bristol-“We set out this year with two goals: to win a race and finish in the Top 10 in points,” Ambrose said. “We got that win for JTG Daugherty Racing a couple weeks ago. We’re in the Top 10. Now it’s important to stay there. A lot can happen at Bristol. It’s real easy to get caught up in somebody else’s mistake. You have to keep your temper under control and try to be the one handing out all the beating and banging, not the guy on the receiving end.”“I had some fans with me to watch the first race this year and they got debris in their beer cans,” Ambrose said. “That’s all they could talk about was how they were sitting so close that they got debris in their beer cans. Bristol is a great place. It’s one of the best tracks we go to because of the atmosphere.”“When you go to Bristol, you know you’re probably going to leave in a bad mood,” said crew chief Gary Cogswell. “A lot of work goes into preparing the Kingsford car, and by the end of the race it may look like it’s been in a demolition derby. Actually, 250 laps at Bristol is a demolition derby.”(JTG Daugherty Racing) (08-21-08)

NASCAR impounds eight truck engines for analysis: It’s the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams’ turn to have their engines looked at. NASCAR impounded eight engines for routine testing after the O’Reilly 200 Wednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR will take the engines to its facility in Concord, N.C., to check horsepower numbers. NASCAR uses that data to help determine whether the rules encourage balanced competition. Bill Davis Racing’s Johnny Benson, the series points leader, had his engine taken, as did fellow Toyota driver Todd Bodine (Germain Racing). NASCAR also took the Circle Bar Racing Ford engines from Brendan Gaughan and Rick Crawford, the Bobby Hamilton Racing-Virginia Dodge engine from Dennis Setzer and the Chevrolet engines from T.J. Bell (TRG Motorsports), Jack Sprague (Kevin Harvick Inc.) and Jimmie Johnson (Randy Moss Motorsports).(SceneDaily.com)(8-21-2008)

Next step for Davis, trucks? UPDATE: Davis to make Series debut with RMM: Development driver, Marc Davis and the JGR team are unsure of his next step. He remains in one of NASCAR’s Class A leagues, the Camping World East series. The best and nearest hope for advancement team president J.D. Gibbs offers is perhaps the Craftsman Truck Series, NASCAR’s Double-A ball, beginning next year. [Brad] Daugherty had limited success as a Truck and Nationwide owner in the past, and just last month bought into another team that will field one car at the Cup level in 2009. The team already had three white drivers under contract for next year, one in Cup, two in Nationwide, so his hands are tied on improving diversity there. “But I’m looking at running, hopefully, an African-American driver in the Truck series,” he says. Daugherty wouldn’t confirm the likelihood that Marc Davis is his man, but also wouldn’t deny it, in a joint effort with the Gibbs team. For Marc, “I would say there’s a possibility he could run something [part-time] in Nationwide in the fall,” Gibbs says. “Next year, we’re trying to look at trucks as a great spot for him.” (Read more of this article at ESPN.com)(8-11-2008)
UPDATE: Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Marc Davis will make his Craftsman Truck Series debut driving for Randy Moss Motorsports in the Sept. 6 race at Gateway International Raceway. Randy Moss Motorsports co-owner David Dollar said Wednesday that Davis could run more than just one race this year. Davis, who just turned 18 in June, has competed in the NASCAR Camping World East Series for the last two years.(SceneDaily.com)(8-21-2008)

O’Reilly Auto Parts signs three-year extension with BMS: O’Reilly Auto Parts, a longtime partner of Bristol Motor Speedway, has signed a three-year extension for the the O’Reilly 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event. The pact also extends their status as the “Official Auto Parts Store of BMS.” O’Reilly sponsors the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event, the O’Reilly 200, which takes place at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile. The auto parts dealer has nearly 5000 stores branded as O’Reilly Auto Parts, CSK Auto and Murray Auto Parts serving race fans throughout the country. O’Reilly has been part of the Bristol team for the past six years and the new contract now exends the relationship through 2011.(Bristol Motor Speedway PR)(8-21-2008)

Busch, Benson Benefit At Bristol
08-21-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Kyle Busch won the battle of Bristol on Wednesday night, but Johnny Benson took one more step towards winning the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series war for 2008. The 23-year-old Busch dominated the proceedings in the O’Reilly 200 Presented by Camping World RV Sales, leading 145 of 203 laps, as he put Billy Ballew’s Miccosukee Resorts Toyota Tundra into victory lane for the third time this season. And while Benson failed in his quest to become the first driver to win four consecutive NCTS races, his fourth-place finish allowed him to open a little breathing room over Ron Hornaday Jr. and the rest of the field chasing the 2008 series championship. There’s not much new that can be said about Busch, who now has 17 victories in NASCAR’s top three divisions, a surreal performance people will be talking about decades from now. On Wednesday night at the 0.533-mile high-banked Bristol track, he took the lead on Lap 71 and never again trailed. “This is definitely a great race team,” said Busch. “It’s a lot of fun with Billy Ballew (owner), Richie (Wauters, crew chief) and all these guys. We just had a great race tonight. This thing was pretty good when we unloaded it. Same stuff as last year. We just kind of fine-tuned on it a little bit.”

Holman Wins Aaron’s 150; McFarland, Robbins Take Titles
By Paul Warner
Thursday, August 21, 2008 12:34:00 PM

Local driver wins first Hooters Pro Cup race on the grandest of stages

Bristol, Tenn.-Caleb Holman didn’t have a lot of fond memories of Bristol Motor Speedway before Wednesday night’s running of the Aaron’s 150.

He missed a Nationwide event by .001 of a second several years ago. The Abingdon, Va., native missed another Nationwide event when qualifying was snowed out in 2006. In his three prior Hooters Pro Cup starts at BMS, Holman’s best finish was 19th.

But those are all distant memories now.

Holman started third in the 40-car field, slipped past Allen Purkhiser on Lap 54 and beat Benny Gordon to the finish line by 1.715 seconds to pick up his first Hooters Pro Cup win.
