The Redhead, she believed in me
msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/8452136/The-Redhead,-she-believed-in-me
You know folks, today (Aug. 15) is about as special a day in my life that I could possibly have. Thirty-nine years ago, Stephanie Hamilton Rader and I were married in Owensboro, Ky. We started on a journey that we had no idea where we were going and even less of an idea of how we were going to get there. There probably were not any two people less prepared for marriage than we were. We just knew that we loved each other and we knew we wanted to spend our lives together. So we made that commitment to each other and made the plunge. I know I have never regretted it, but I am not sure there weren’t many a day when the Redhead would agree with that statement. By the way, I can get away with calling her the Redhead, but I don’t necessarily recommend it to people who don’t know her all that well. That’s what I affectionately call her and she loves it. Anyway, we started down a road that we had no idea where it was going to take us.

Edwards Sweeps Weekend at Michigan
Carl Edwards turned 29 on Friday and celebrated by winning Saturday’s Nationwide Series Carfax 250 and Sunday’s Sprint Cup 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Edwards became only the second driver to sweep a weekend at Michigan, Mark Martin did it in 1993. Edwards led five times for 84 laps and held off Kyle Busch on a restart with two laps to go and took home his fifth victory of 2008. It was the 12th career win in 144 tries for Edwards. “We’re winning races,” Edwards said, apparently sending a message to points leader and runner-up Kyle Busch. “We’re gearing up for the Chase. I’m feeling stronger than ever. We’re here to win championships. That’s what we’re shooting for.”

Edwards closed the gap a little on Busch for the top spot in the Sprint Cup standings and with three races remaining before the Chase for the Championship begins, he needs all the points he can pick up. “The greatest part is we didn’t give up more bonus points to Kyle,” Edwards said. “He’s just so strong. Every time I win and he finishes second that’s really a 20-point spread for us. That’s what we have to keep doing, is to try and win the next three events and go into this Chase on even ground.” — Busch knows he’s in for a fight now… “Carl’s right there,” Busch said. “He has been all year. It’s a 20-point swing. We’ve got to live with it. Hopefully, we can make it up someplace else.” On the final pit stop, Busch was leading when the yellow came out but Edwards’ crew got him out first. “It just came down to when he beat us off of pit road,” Busch said. “That was it for us. We just didn’t quite have the car capable enough of being able to beat those guys. We were good on that one run, that one set of tires. But that was pretty much what we had. We just didn’t have enough for the (No.) 99 there at the end. We weren’t able to get through the corners as fast as Carl was.”

Roush Fenway Racing teammate David Ragan had the best run of his career by finishing in the third position. Two more Roush Fords filled the fourth and fifth spot, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth. DEI’s Mark Martin had a strong race, finishing in sixth place followed by Brian Vickers, Kevin Harvick, Elliott Sadler and Jamie McMurray to round out the top ten. Roush Fenway Racing had a great day at their home track with five cars in the top ten. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Bristol Motor Speedway next Saturday night, August 23rd, 2008, for the Sharpie 500. This will be the 24th race of 36. The race is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM / Eastern Time on ESPN. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Morgan-McClure Not Happy About Losing No. 4
The morning of Aug. 15 was not pleasant for the owners and fans of Morgan-McClure Motorsports. Hundreds of miles from the hills of Southwest Virginia, a persistent rumor turned into a harsh reality. In an orchestrated press conference at Michigan International Speedway, it was confirmed that Ryan Newman will drive the No. 4 Chevrolet next season for the new Stewart-Haas team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. For 25 years, that yellow No. 4 was closely intertwined with the Abingdon-based MMM Chevrolet. Drivers such as Ernie Irvan, Sterling Marlin and Bobby Hamilton steered Southwest Virginia’s NASCAR team to 14 wins, including three victories in the famed Daytona 500. “There’s some sweat and history in that number 4. We feel like it ours,” MMM co-owner Tim Morgan said.

2009 Cup Schedule: the OFFICIAL Sprint Cup Scheduled for the 2009 season has NOT been released yet, but have posted an UNOFFICIAL/Tentative 2009 Schedule on my 2009 Unofficial Sprint Cup Schedule. There are still MANY ifs and possible date changes with Atlanta maybe swapping with Auto Club Speedway and Bristol is looking for a later date for their 1st race in the season. Plus Easter is April 12th in 2009 and Labor Day is September 7th, so some dates will be shuffled.(8-11-2008)
MORE: NASCAR officials hope to announce the 2009 Cup schedule by the end of this month [August]. Don’t look for any new venues, and don’t expect to see any track lose one of its races. But it’s possible we’ll see some trades made with speedway dates, including the Labor Day weekend race going from Auto Club Speedway (ACS) in Fontana, Calif., to Atlanta. Speedway Motorsports Inc., International Speedway Corp. and NASCAR still are trying to work out all the logistics of moving fall dates among Atlanta, Talladega and ACS. SMI, which owns Atlanta Motor Speedway, would get the Labor Day weekend race, and ACS would get a race inside the Chase. Talladega would take Atlanta’s late October event, and ACS would take Talladega’s early October race. Both ACS and Talladega are owned by ISC. A triple-swap like this is difficult because it has a ripple effect on other events, schedules and sponsors. But most of the teams are in favor of this because it’s a more reasonable travel schedule with cooler weather conditions at Fontana.(ESPN.com)
IOWA? Tues? Iowa Speedway chief executive officer Stan Clement promised big news and excitement but few details regarding a news conference planned for Tuesday at the track. But Clement, reached Saturday night by the Des Moines Sunday Register, confirmed the facility’s designer, Rusty Wallace, would be in town for the event. He also said NASCAR will release its 2009 schedules for the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series the same day.(Des Moines Register)(8-17-2008), see my 2009 Unofficial Sprint Cup Schedule page for dates and some rumors on my 2009 Schedule News and Rumors page.

Menard and Yates? UPDATE: John Menard, the wealthy businessman (Menards, the privately owned home improvements company), may be losing interest in NASCAR racing after so many years, according to sources. Menard, whose son #15-Paul is driving for DEI, is reportedly in negotiations with Ford’s Jack Roush, perhaps to help fellow owner Doug Yates keep afloat in this sport, which would involve a move from Chevrolet to Ford. “I don’t have any idea what might be going on there,” DEI’s Story said. “We just met with John, and everything is good.”(Winston Salem Journal)(7-4-2008)
UPDATE: Yates Racing, with an assist from partner Roush Fenway, is making a push to sign Paul Menard from Dale Earnhardt Inc. “We believe we’re the leading contender outside of the incumbent,” Smith said. #38-David Gilliland and #28-Travis Kvapil currently drive for Yates Racing. DEI officials have been negotiating to re-sign Menard and feel confident he will return to the organization.(ESPN.com)(8-18-2008)

Joey Logano will drive in selected Sprint Cup Series races this season for Joe Gibbs Racing, but the team is still deciding where he will make his debut. Logano made his first Nationwide start days after turning 18 in May and now boasts a victory and two pole positions for JGR. His early success has accelerated talks about moving the rookie into NASCAR’s premier circuit. Bill Janitz, Logano’s spokesman, said a debut next month at Richmond International Raceway was probable but the number of races was undetermined. Janitz denied Gatorade would be the sponsor. Richmond “has been talked about a few times,” Logano said. Logano also is waiting on word from his team on whether he will replace Stewart next year in the #20 Toyota.(USA Today)(8-18-2008)

NASCAR dyno’s ten cars after MIS Cup race: NASCAR planned to test horsepower on at least 10 cars after Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. NASCAR took several cars, while other teams wanted their engines tested. The cars tested were: took the Fords of #6-David Ragan, #16-Greg Biffle and #17-Matt Kenseth and #28-Travis Kvapil, the Chevrolet of #48-Jimmie Johnson, the Toyotas of #18-Kyle Busch and #44-David Reutimann and the Dodges of #19-Elliott Sadler, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya and #2-Kurt Busch. NASCAR planned to conduct tests on its chassis dynomometer at the track.(SceneDaily)(8-18-2008)

Petty Enterprises has not decided on a driver for its #45 car next year, team official Robbie Loomis said Friday, but Chad McCumbee remains one of the top candidates for the ride. Michael McDowell and Casey Mears are some of the other drivers who have been mentioned, though Mears appears poised to sign with Richard Childress Racing. Loomis said the team was still speaking with multiple drivers.(SceneDaily.com)(8-18-2008)

BLUE LIZARD TRANSPORTER PARADE , MAKING WISHES AND MIRACLES HAPPEN FOR CHILDREN SET FOR THURSDAY, AUG. 21

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Monday, Aug. 11, 2008) — For the 12th consecutive year, NASCAR’s transporters will take part in the Blue Lizard Transporter Parade, Making Wishes And Miracles Happen For Children In The East Tennessee Region, prior to the sold-out Sharpie 500 and Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway Thursday, Aug. 21.

The parade has become one of the most popular events of August race week with dozens of big rigs making their way through the city to Bristol Motor Speedway as thousands of fans line the 10-mile route to take part in the unique event. This year the parade again will feature a special passenger on board each transporter as a child from Make-A-Wish or the Children’s Miracle Network will participate.

Slated for a 9 p.m. start, following the completion of downtown Bristol’s Food City Family Race Night, the brilliantly colored transporters will make their way from Bristol Mall down Volunteer Parkway to “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” The 2008 edition of the Blue Lizard NASCAR Transporter Parade will boast more than 50 of the multi-million dollar machines that haul the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race cars from track to track throughout the season.

The transporter leading the way will be the one belonging to the leader of the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings heading into the Sharpie 500. Adding to the fanfare of the parade, fireworks will explode high overhead from four points along the route.

The transporter drivers also will be available prior to the start of the parade to sign autographs at the Bristol Mall. Spectators also can watch the drivers take part in the Pilot Truck Challenge.

The Transporter Parade precedes two of NASCAR’s most exciting night races, the Food City 250 Nationwide Series race Friday, Aug. 22 and the Sharpie 500 Saturday, Aug. 23.

Gibbs Nationwide Teams Caught Cheating
Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, was chatting amicably with some folks Sunday when J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, sauntered up. Gibbs wore the look of a man whose children just got caught doing something really awful in school. “OK, I gotta go,” said Pemberton, suddenly assuming the role of principal as he took Gibbs by the arm and led him into the NASCAR officials’ trailer behind them. There was good reason for the consternation on Gibbs’ face. Two Nationwide Series race teams fielded by JGR face serious penalties after NASCAR officials discovered blatant attempts to alter post-race chassis dynamometer tests. The infractions were discovered by Nationwide Series inspectors following Saturday’s Carfax 250 at Michigan International Speedway, according to Pemberton. The cars involved were the No. 18 Toyota that was driven to a seventh-place finish by Joey Logano, and the No. 20 Toyota that was driven to a third-place finish by Tony Stewart.

Statement From Joe Gibbs
The following is a statement from Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), regarding the alleged infractions that took place by JGR during technical inspection following Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway. “If this alleged incident proves true, it goes against everything we stand for as an organization. “We will take full responsibility and accept any penalties NASCAR levies against us. We will also investigate internally how this incident took place and who was involved and make whatever decisions are necessary to ensure that this kind of situation never happens again. “The expectations we set for everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing begins with me, and I personally apologize to NASCAR, our partners and our fans for the negative light this situation has cast upon all of us.”

NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell has confirmed that Iowa Speedway is one of the candidates to replace Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on the 2009 Nationwide Series schedule. NASCAR has already said it would not return to Mexico for a fifth race there next year, and speculation was rampant that Iowa would be the replacement. “I’d say there’s more than two [tracks], but [Iowa is] absolutely one of the tracks under consideration that we’ve had conversations with,” O’Donnell said. “… We definitely want to find a replacement. We will be at the same number of races as last year. We’re still in that process. We’ve got a couple of good candidates. We’ll probably about two weeks away from being ready to announce our schedule for ’09.”(SceneDaily.com)(8-4-2008)

Danny Sullivan offers to buy Bull Davis Racing: Danny Sullivan, the “Spin and Win” driver who won the 1985 Indianapolis 500, has put an offer together to purchase the Bill Davis Racing operation in NASCAR. Sullivan, one of the most popular IndyCar drivers when he raced for team owners Roger Penske and Rick Galles, told SI.com on Friday that he has discussed a deal with Bill Davis. Davis confirmed those discussions to SI.com at Michigan International Speedway. “I’ve been pursuing it but haven’t gotten a response from him (Bill Davis),” Sullivan told SI.com in a telephone interview. “He’s still dreaming on the price. I have a partner who has lined up the money to do this and we’ve been kicking around on some stuff. He is (Davis) off on the numbers and had some bigger people chasing it. The last time I talked to him (Davis), I had the money but didn’t get the documents that we requested.” Davis confirmed the conversations with Sullivan but expressed some curiosity over some of Sullivan’s statements. “We’ve had some conversations,” Davis said. “I just heard some of those quotes and I was pretty amazed by them. We’ve continued to talk to Danny. We’ve talked to several people, yes. All we’ve ever talked about with anybody is the entire operation. Davis admitted the only reason he is open to selling his team is the skyrocketing costs involved to keep a competitive NASCAR Sprint Cup team on the track during the grueling season. Davis also has a highly-successful NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series operation.(Sports Illustrated)(8-16-2008)
