No rain tires for Cup, but maybe NNS: As of Wednesday, forecasters were saying that there was a 50% chance of rain for Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen and a 40% chance for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race. Could more history be written this weekend? Not in the Sprint Cup series. NASCAR officials have torpedoed the chances for that. NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter on Wednesday laid out the guidelines for racing on wet pavement. “We’ll likely continue to use rain tires in Nationwide Series road course races, but not in Sprint Cup,” Hunter said. “We have the flexibility to reschedule postponed Cup races to Monday, or even Tuesday, something we can’t do with our other national series.”(Kansas City Star)(8-7-2008)

Sprint Cup Series Live from Watkins Glen on ESPN: The Sprint Cup Series makes its second and final appearance of the season on a road course this weekend, and ESPN will have live, flag-to-flag coverage of the event from Watkins Glen International on Sunday, August 10, at 1pm/et. The historic road racing facility is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Coverage from Watkins Glen also includes a live telecast of Sprint Cup qualifying on Friday, Aug. 8, at 3pm/et, and coverage of practice sessions earlier that day at noon and Saturday, Aug. 9, at 1:30pm/et, all on ESPN2. All programming also airs in high definition and the race is simulcast on ESPN Deportes. The race replays on Monday, Aug. 11, at 1pm/et on ESPN Classic [and this week on ESPN2 at 3am/et]. As part of the 60th anniversary celebration of Watkins Glen, ESPN Classic airs the track’s 1988 Sprint Cup race on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 2pm/et. The race originally aired on ESPN.(8-5-2008)

BAM Racing loans out crew people: While BAM Racing undergoes a complete restructuring of its race team and conducts an ongoing sponsor search, it has taken a unique stance regarding a select few employees. Crew chief David Hyder, shock specialist Dean Johnson and along with others are still under contract to BAM Racing, but team owner Beth Ann Morgenthau decided to “loan them out” to the Wood Brothers race team until the BAM Racing #49 returns to the track sometime later this year. According to Mrs. Morgenthau, “We have a number of cars prepared at the shop and our guys were just itching to get back to the race track - as we all are. I made the decision to help out the Wood Brothers by making several of our key personnel available, included David and Dean. The benefit to BAM is that they will continue to learn these new cars and be in a better position to make the BAM Racing Toyota competitive when we return. Right now we are in continuing negotiations with more than one potential sponsor and we are planning to continue racing in the Sprint Cup Series in the near future.”(BAM Racing PR)(8-8-2008)

Allmendinger waiting on Red Bull for 2009 plans: #84-AJ Allmendinger’s situation is unique to the NASCAR garage. Red Bull not only sponsors his team, it owns the team, too. Executives at Red Bull’s Austrian headquarters make the final decision on its athletes, and are rarely around to banter with. That, in turn, creates a disconnect with its Mooresville, N.C.-based NASCAR team, Allmendinger says, and ultimately leaves him wondering whether Red Bull plans to pick up the option on his current contract. “The assumption in the garage is that I’m back at Red Bull, but they have the option and haven’t picked it up yet,” Allmendinger said. The main obstacle Allmendinger faces is teammate Scott Speed, the former Red Bull Formula One driver who has experienced notable success in both the Craftsman Truck Series (he won at Dover earlier this year) and ARCA. Red Bull corporate executives like Speed. His brash attitude is the corporate mantra personified, and he’s escalating rapidly through the stock car ranks.(full story at ESPN.com)(8-8-2008) snipurl.com/3ctoj-gazete

Watkins Glen Tire Notes: As on all NASCAR road courses, Sprint Cup Series teams will run the same Goodyear Eagle tire code (D-4110) on all four tire positions at Watkins Glen . . . this is the second consecutive year and the fourth consecutive road course race that Goodyear has brought this code for teams to run . . . in addition to the road courses, this tire code has also been run on the right-side at Martinsville for the past two years . . . teams in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series will run a different tire code (D-4112) this weekend at Watkins Glen . . . NASCAR teams do not run inner liners in their tires on road courses, including this weekend at Watkins Glen. . . . in addition to its regular road course tires, Goodyear has brought 600 wet weather Eagle radials for teams in the Nationwide Series to run this weekend . . . Goodyear, NASCAR and the Nationwide Series made history at Montreal last weekend, running its first-ever points-paying race in the rain . . . The estimated pit window is every 30-32 laps, based on fuel mileage.(Goodyear PR), see more notes, tries pressures, more on my Watkins Glen Race Info page.(8-8-2008) www.jayski.com/next/2008/22wg2008.htm#goodyear

Police search for stabbing suspect at Pocono 500: Police are still seeking witnesses of an apparent attempted homicide outside the Pocono International Raceway this weekend. Michael Gualtieri, 43, of Long Island was stabbed in a parking area outside the raceway Sunday, Pocono Mountain Regional Police said. He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest to repair damage to his heart caused by the chest wound, and police said last night he remained in critical condition. Police said they have executed a search warrant in the case, but did not identify a suspect or release any further information. In addition to the stabbing, police said they dealt with a series of other problems inside or outside the raceway Sunday, including reports of car accidents, fights and public intoxication.(Allentown Morning Call)(8-8-2008)

Report: Grant’s background includes restraining order, DUI arrest: The former racing official who has accused NASCAR of racial discrimination and sexual harassment in a $225 million lawsuit had a restraining order filed against her by a former boyfriend and was arrested for driving under the influence, The Associated Press has learned. Mauricia Grant, who filed her suit against NASCAR in June, also was charged with driving with a suspended license while still employed as a technical inspector for NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series. An attorney for Grant said his client did not refute anything in her past, but previous actions have no bearing on the suit that alleges 23 specific incidents of sexual harassment and 34 specific incidents of racial and gender discrimination during her time working for NASCAR. “Ms. Grant’s alleged prior actions are totally irrelevant to this suit,” attorney Benedict P. Morelli said in a statement. “NASCAR must obey the law and should focus its full attention on improving the discriminatory and hostile work environment to which employees are subject.” But NASCAR indicated Thursday her past actions are a reflection on Grant’s character, and vowed to continue fighting her claims. NASCAR asked for and was granted a three-week extension on filing its response to her suit, and the new deadline is Friday. “Clearly, these revelations show that there are always at least two sides to every story,” NASCAR said in a statement to the AP. “We are confident that over the course of this process even more facts will come to light and justice will be served.” Court documents reviewed by The AP showed that Grant has legal issues dating back to a 2002 restraining order filed by an ex-boyfriend.(in part from AP/ESPN.com), see past news about the lawsuit on my NASCAR vs. Grant lawsuit page.(8-7-2008) www.jayski.com/pages/tracks/lawsuit-grant.htm

Budweiser Shootout To Have Different Look, New Format In 2009: The 2009 Budweiser Shootout will have a different race format and a new method for qualifying. NASCAR’s top officials, from Chair & CEO Brian France to President Mike Helton, have worked with Anheuser-Busch and Daytona Int’l Speedway (DIS) to recreate the event as part of A-B’s sponsorship renewal with DIS. In the past, pole winners from the previous year have automatically qualified for the non-points race, which is considered the unofficial kickoff to the Sprint Cup season. But when Coors replaced Bud as the official beer of NASCAR and took over entitlement of the Coors Light Pole Award, A-B sought to separate its marquee event from the award. The specifics of those changes are still being finalized. Changes are expected to be announced later this month. The 2009 race is scheduled for February 7, the weekend prior to the Daytona 500.(Sports Business Daily), see my 2009 Budweiser Shootout page for past news, past winners, all-time pole winners list and what the lineup would be using the old format — it will be corrected when the new format is announced.(8-7-2008) www.jayski.com/stats/2009/bud2009.htm

Sunday, OTL to Examine Diversity in NASCAR Sunday’s Outside the Lines, scheduled to air on ESPN at 9:30am/et and at 12noon/et on ESPNEWS, will look at minorities and women who work on the NASCAR circuit. This past June, former NASCAR official Mauricia Grant filed a discrimination lawsuit against the stock-car racing association. In light of Grant’s lawsuit, OTL will explore the work culture inside the NASCAR community.(ESPN PR)(8-7-2008)

Chase stats after Pocono: The record for consecutive race changes in the Chase field during the final 13 races of the first 26, is six straight, set in 2005. With Matt Kenseth dropping out and Clint Bowyer bouncing back in at Pocono, that record has been tied and could be broken with another change in the top 12 at Watkins Glen. Last year saw the least amount of races where the Chase field changed over the final 13, only two. 2005 takes the prize for the most field changes in the final 13, at 11. Places 7-12 are still very much at risk, and we might be down to two serious contenders outside the top 12, Matt Kenseth and David Ragan. Watkins Glen will be another big test for Ragan, who has had a very solid sophomore season, but was 32nd at W-G last year. Kasey Kahne probably is sweating it out this weekend as well, with a 22nd and 26th the last two times out at The Glen. Brian Vickers and the #83 team’s got caught on pit stop rotation at Pocono and two straight tough races now has the Red Bull team 203 points out in 16th place. It will take a mighty charge to get back into legitimate contention. See more on the Chase Stats after Pocono page.(8-7-2008) www.jayski.com/stats/2008/chase/21poc2008chase.htm

7 days to Cup weekend at MIS: Only 7 days remain until the 3M Performance 400 presented Bondo race weekend at Michigan International Speedway. The daily countdown leading up to the weekend - 7 - Is the number of seconds by which winner of last year’s CARFAX 250, Denny Hamlin, was in front of second place winner Matt Kenseth. Hamlin got into the wall in his Chevrolet during practice on Friday only to turn around and crush the competition the next day. Hamlin managed to lead the final 40 laps and received his first career victory at MIS. His margin of victory set a Nationwide Series track record for the greatest margin of victory. Tickets are available for the 3M Performance 400 presented by Bondo NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, Aug. 17, along with the Saturday, Aug. 16 CARFAX 250 Nationwide Series race. Fans may purchase tickets by visiting MISpeedway.com, or by calling the MIS Ticket Hotline at 800.354.1010.(MIS PR)(8-8-2008)

Camping Spaces Going Quick at Atlanta: While Atlanta Motor Speedway offers numerous camping options for NASCAR fans, less than 20 infield camping spaces remain available for the Pep Boys Auto 500 Sprint Cup Series weekend. Located on the infield in High Speed Corral between Turns Three and Four, fans wanting to take advantage of the weekend’s infield activities need to act quickly in order to claim this prime viewing location. While camping spaces are being purchased at a rapid rate, significant quantities of outside reserved camping spaces are also available in the Mid-State Family camping lots, as well as Legends, East Turn, First Turn and Speedway Boulevard. Because of the quantities available, fans interested in purchasing a camping space are encouraged to reserve their space now. In addition to reserved camping opportunities at AMS, unreserved camping will also be available during the race weekend for just $60 payable upon arrival. Camping spaces, as well as tickets to the Pep Boys Auto 500 race weekend, can be purchased by calling the AMS ticket office at 770-946-4211, 877-9-AMS-TIX (1-877-926-7849), or online at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.(AMS PR)(8-8-2008)

Martinsville Speedway Celebrates 2nd Annual Open House Aug. 24: What began as a birthday party a year ago has turned into a tradition. A year ago, Martinsville Speedway celebrated its 60th birthday with a huge open-house birthday party that included an opportunity for fans to drive their own cars on the famed .526-mile oval. The day was such a big hit with fans, speedway officials have announced the Second Annual Martinsville Speedway Open House, scheduled for Sunday, August 24 from 1pm to 5pm. And again, the event is free of charge. It should be noted, fans won’t get to drive exactly like the legends did. It will be a guided trip around the paper-clip shaped oval, led by the track’s official pace car for the TUMS QuikPak 500. The drive-arounds will be just a part of the day’s experience, though. Guided tours of the track will run continuously from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will include stops in the press box, corporate suites, the flagman’s stand, the infield and the garage area. Famous Martinsville Speedway hotdogs and Pepsi products will be free while supplies last. There will be NASCAR Whelen Modified and Late Model Stock cars on display, along with vintage race cars and Martinsville Speedway pace cars. Martinsville Speedway’s ticket office will be open during the open house. Anyone purchasing tickets to the TUMS QuikPak 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race during the open house will be entered in a drawing to win either a pair of tickets for the Bud Fan Zone on the morning of the TUMS QuikPak 500.(Martinsville Speedway PR)(8-8-2008)

No sale at Kentucky Speedway? Speedway Motorsports Inc. may not wind up buying Kentucky Speedway after all. SMI has until Aug. 18 to decide whether to complete the $78 million deal that includes the assumption of $63 million in debt. “I can’t answer definitively whether or not we would go forward with the transaction,” Bill Brooks, the company’s chief financial officer, said during a conference call with financial analysts Wednesday. The track in Sparta, Ky., isn’t going to be on the 2009 Sprint Cup schedule. Marcus Smith, chief operating officer and president of SMI, said the the company would consider moving a Cup date from one of its current tracks to Kentucky if the deal does close. “It’s one of the potential options that we would have,” Smith said.(Charlotte Observer)(8-7-2008)

Robby Gordon needs to get something going at Watkins Glen….so he can sign 2009 NASCAR sponsorships
By Mike Mulhern
If Tony Stewart thinks becoming a NASCAR owner-driver will be any panacea next season – even with hefty support from General Motors and Chevy team owner Rick Hendrick – maybe he should drop by Robby Gordon’s hauler or motorcoach and listen for a while.

Numbers Game: Stewart Aims For 1st ‘08 Win, 5th At The Glen

Tony Stewart (No. 20 Home Depot Toyota) has yet to crack the win column this season, but statistics alone make him an overwhelming favorite for Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen.

The two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion leads five important categories of pre-race Loop Data stats for the event — the annual road-course event at Watkins Glen International.

As the defending race champion, Stewart’s pursuing not only a second consecutive win at the upstate New York track, but his fourth in the last five series races there.

Lastly, he and four-time series champion Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet) — NASCAR’s all-time leader with nine road-course wins — have combined to win 15 of the last 22 series events at road courses. That includes eight of the last 11 at Watkins Glen.

Stewart, who’s ninth in the series standings, has two top-five finishes in his last three races, the latest a runner-up finish last Sunday at Pocono Raceway.

As for pre-race Loop Data for Watkins Glen, he leads Driver Rating (137.9), Average Running Position (3.3), Fastest Laps Run (76), Laps in the Top 15 (264) and Average Green Flag Speed (119.360 mph). He has four wins, five top fives and seven top 10s in nine career starts there.

Race To The Chase: 50 Bonus Points Remain

Winning is the focus with five events remaining before the 2008 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup begins Sept. 14 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The second half of the Race to the Chase — the 10 events preceding the cutoff event at Richmond International Raceway — begins this Sunday at Watkins Glen. Drivers accrue 10 bonus points for each win during the season’s first 26 races, and the top 12, who qualify for the Chase, are seeded according to bonus-point totals.

Standings leader Kyle Busch (No. 18 M&M’s Toyota) holds the top spot with a series-high seven wins (70 bonus points).

Carl Edwards (No. 99 Office Depot Ford), thanks to Sunday’s win at Pocono (his fourth in ‘08), would be seeded second, followed by Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet) and Kasey Kahne (No. 9 Budweiser Dodge). Kahne and Johnson each have two wins; based on tiebreakers, Johnson earns the third seed.

Four other drivers currently in the top 12 have one win in ‘08 — Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 88 National Guard/AMP Energy Chevrolet), Clint Bowyer (No. 07 DirecTV Chevrolet), Denny Hamlin (No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota) and Jeff Burton (No. 31 AT&T Mobility Chevrolet).

Earnhardt, Bowyer, Hamlin and Burton would be seeded fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle (No. 16 3M Ford) and Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet) — winless thus far in ‘08 — would be seeded ninth, 10th, 11th and 12, respectively.

Winning Drivers Usually Win At The Glen

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers who win championships tend to win at Watkins Glen.

Sunday’s Centurion Boats at The Glen marks the 26th series event at the upstate New York road course, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this season.

Fifteen drivers have won on the 2.45-mile track, among them three series champions — Rusty Wallace, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart.

Combined, those 15 drivers have an impressive 363 total career victories.

In fact, it’s not usual for series champions to battle for wins at The Glen. Exhibit A: Gordon and Stewart were part of a suspenseful finish to last year’s event; Gordon, the polesitter, spun in Turn 1 while leading late, and saw Stewart usurp his lead for the win.

Gordon, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Monday, is NASCAR’s all-time leader with nine road-course wins.

“I love racing at Watkins Glen,” he said. “It’s fast, and it’s a track that suits our cars very, very well “
Watkins Glen’s winning history may present the next hurdle for standings leader Kyle Busch.

Busch’s series-high seven wins include a victory earlier this season in the schedule’s only other road-course event, at Infineon Raceway.

A win on Sunday would mean the ‘08 road-course sweep for Busch, who also won the NASCAR Nationwide Series event in Mexico City in March.

If he does prevail, he’ll become the first driver to win three national-series road-course events in one season. Busch could use the boost; he’s coming off two consecutive finishes outside the top 10.

On The Cam: Robby Gordon

Robby Gordon, the owner/driver of Robby Gordon Motorsports, was the guest Tuesday on the weekly NASCAR CAM Video Teleconference.

An accomplished road racer, he addressed this week’s event at Watkins Glen, among other topics.
Following are some excerpts.

Q: Is road racing your favorite type of racing?
Gordon: “I still like the road racing a lot. It’s something that I look at, we have probably a 1-in-5 or 1-in-10 shot of winning the race. We put a lot of effort into our road racing. Not that we don’t put a lot of effort into our oval racing. This is something I’ve done for 15 years now and I have a lot of experience road racing.”

Q: Is it more difficult for an oval racer to adapt to road racing and vice-versa?
Gordon: “I think it’s probably difficult each direction. The biggest thing on the oval is to back off early, get it into the corner, then get back on the gas. It’s similar to how I run the road races as well. I try to roll the middle as fast as I can. And I think that’s helped me on the road courses.

“But, the short ovals I normally run pretty good at, so it seems like that works there, too.”

Q: Any plans for a second car in 2009, with driver Scott Riggs?
Gordon: “Well, I think Scott Riggs is a very good racecar driver. We’ll start there. Committed to running a second car? You know, we’d love to run a second car. I think our team and our facility and our systems and procedures and policies, all that stuff, is in place now to run a second car.

“You know, we still haven’t won with one car, but this weekend’s race hasn’t happened yet either. It’s important to make one car run good first. And we’ve been able to stay inside of the top 35. But at the same time we’d like to position ourselves to win races.”

Q: On the tough competition on road courses:
Gordon: “The competition’s so close, especially with the new car, the way it is today. The cars are pretty equal. So if there’s a hole there, you got to take it. Sometimes two cars get together. Obviously, short track racing and road racing is probably similar because the speeds are down low in the middle of the corner. “I think any race right now is tough to win and I think the competition’s close.”

Q: Any advice for fellow driver Tony Stewart, who will become an owner/driver next year?
Gordon: “I think he’ll do a good job at it. The only words of wisdom that I gave him was, and I only mean it in fun and games, be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

“You know, it’s a chore to be the driver and the owner. But at the same time, provided you hire the right people and they do their job and follow through with it and take ownership in it, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s when you have to get involved in certain situations.”

In The Loop: ‘The Gordons’ Rule Pre-Race Stats At The Glen

The unrelated Gordons – Jeff and Robby – find themselves near the top of most Loop Data statistical categories over the past three races at Watkins Glen.

The two have combined for five Watkins Glen victories (Jeff has four and Robby one). Since 2005, Jeff has a Driver Rating of 108.2 (third-best), an Average Running Position of 9.6 (fourth), 15 Fastest Laps Run (third) and 196 Laps in the Top 15 (tied for fourth).

Robby has similar stats. Over the past three Watkins Glen events (all top-five finishes), Robby has a Driver Rating of 106.3 (fourth), an Average Running Position of 11.9 (fifth), six Fastest Laps Run (tied for sixth), 196 Laps in the Top 15 (tied for fourth…with Jeff Gordon) and 158 Green Flag Passes (fifth).

For some, the key component of this weekend – and the remaining five events in the Race to the Chase – are bonus points. With each win in the first 26 races, a driver adds 10 bonus points to their Chase total, and everyone’s chasing Kyle Busch’s 70 bonus points.

The two who seems most primed to catch him are Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson.

Since 2005, Johnson has a Driver Rating of 104.5 (fifth-best), an Average Running Position of 7.9 (third) and has run an impressive 87.1% of the Laps in the Top 15 (second).

With two consecutive top 10s at The Glen, Edwards has a Driver Rating of 85.6 (10th), an Average Running Position of 15.2 (ninth) and ranks eighth in Laps in the Top 15 (57.7%).

Busch, also with two consecutive top 10s at The Glen, has a Driver Rating of 84.9 (11th), an Average Running Position of 20.0 (19th) and has run 42.3% of the Laps in the Top 15 (15th).

Newman Goes to Camp…
On his way to this weekend’s race at Watkins Glen International, 2008 Daytona 500 Champion Ryan Newman made a pit stop at Buffalo Bills training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y. During the latest installment of the Alltel Racing Podcast, Newman likens football training camp to a NASCAR test session as fans come to watch practice and for the chance to get some autographs.

While at training camp, Newman met up with Bills offensive lineman Brad Butler, a former University of Virginia football teammate of the No. 12 Alltel team jack man, Bryan White. White is one of four former college athletes on the No. 12 Alltel Team. Newman gives credit to the pit crew team’s abilities and says they are actually more athletic than the drivers who “sit in a chair, turn the wheel and push pedals.”

However, Newman prides himself on his other abilities. When asked if he ate lunch with the Bills, Newman joked, “No, I don’t think they would have been able to keep up with me.” To listen to the full podcast, visit alltelracing.com

Driver Development School Scheduled for November 22 – 23, 2008
The Dirt Track Racing School Offers Unique Dirt Track Experience

August 7, 2008: The Dirt Track Racing School has partnered with publicist and author Jade Gurss to offer a specialized driver development program at the end of the 2008 racing season. This unique class will offer on-track experience behind the wheel of a Late Model on a banked dirt oval and a media seminar with Gurss.

The driver development class, geared toward young racers on their climb up the racing ladder, will begin Saturday, November 22 at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC. Day one will give students a full day of driving behind the wheel of a full-sized, dirt Late Model with professional feedback and instruction from the Dirt Track Racing School instructors. Driving will be approximately 60 laps per student. Day two will consist of a three-hour media seminar at the Hampton Inn hotel in nearby Belmont, NC. Gurss is the owner of fingerprint inc., a sports publicity company. He is a two-time best selling author, SPEEDtv.com columnist and publicist for Dale Earnhardt Jr. from 1999 through the 2007 season.

The media seminar will include many elements to help a young driver develop a media kit as well as become comfortable being interviewed or being on television. The goal is to help develop the skills to maximize media exposure for your team and sponsors.

“I’m very excited to be working with Jade on this special class”, said Shawn Parker, owner of the Dirt Track Racing School. “He has an incredible amount of experience, and he brings a wealth of knowledge from all facets of the motorsports industry.”

The total price for the program is $1,299. Spaces for the driver development class are limited, so please call the Dirt Track Racing School at 704-728-2969 to sign up, or go to the official website at www.DriveOnDirt.com. Reservations made by August 31, 2008 will receive a $100 discount.

Nationwide could run on rain tires at Watkins Glen: As of Wednesday, forecasters were saying that there was a 50 percent chance of rain for Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen and a 40 percent chance for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race.

Aug 8 NASCAR Nationwide Series:Driver Ratings for Watkins Glen
thehotlap.com/modules.php?name=Press_Releases&op=view&rid=2167

The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to its third and final road course of the season at Watkins Glen International, coming off the first ever national series point’s race in the rain. The teams are reviewing all their notes on how to improve the “wet” racing set-up. Teams have understood what it takes to make a Nationwide car turn left and right in dry conditions, now they need to go to work on what is needed in wet conditions. The racing surface at The Glen is wider with sweeping banked turns; it also has the most elevation change than the other road courses we have raced on this year. This will lead to faster speeds around the circuit.(NASCAR) (08-07-08)

David Reutimann-Watkins Glen race experience: “My first race at Watkins Glen was last year in the Nationwide series,” said Reutimann. “It was actually my first time seeing the track. This being a fairly new track for me, it just takes a while getting use to it and learning the course. This year I have a little more experience with road courses so I think we have a better chance of improving from last year’s results.” Racing on road courses: “I have not done all that well on any of the road courses,” said Reutimann. We’ve had some decent finishes on these types of tracks, but nothing super exciting. Chris Cook has helped me with some the fundamentals of road course racing and helped setup the Aaron’s Dream Machine last week in Montreal. We were running pretty well there, but ended up stopping the race early due to rain.”Challenges of Watkins Glen:“It’s a road course so of course it’s tough,” said Reutimann. Watkins Glen is an extremely fast road course; I guess you could call it the “superspeedway of road courses”. Not having a lot of laps on this type of track makes it more challenging than others. If I focus on keeping the Dream Machine on the track all race, we should end up with a decent finish.”Getting more top-5 finishes: “We have had some crazy stuff happen to us these past couple of weeks,” said Reutimann. “We just have to keep our heads up and not focus on the points. We are capable of running really well each week, we just need to stay focus and work hard each race.”(SportsMarketing-Aaron’s) (08-07-08)

CGRFS announced Wednesday Dario Franchitti will race for the organization in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) with his next run scheduled to take place this weekend at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International behind the wheel of the No. 40 Fastenal Dodge. In addition to Watkins Glen, Franchitti is scheduled to run NNS races at Michigan International Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and Phoenix International Raceway. Bryan Clauson and the team of CGRFS drivers will complete the balance of the 2008 schedule.(CGRFS) (08-07-08)

NASCAR Officials confirmed that the Nationwide Series race will go on even if it rains this Saturday at Watkins Glen International. There is only a 40% chance of rain for the Zippo 200 on Saturday afternoon that will not affect the quality of racing presented by the series. Last weekend in Montreal, the Nationwide Series competed on rain tires in a points race for the first time in the history of any NASCAR series. While this is not the first time in Watkins Glen International’s history that a race may be run in the rain, it is the first time that any NASCAR series would compete at WGI in the rain. Many other series compete at WGI rain or shine throughout the year. NASCAR Officials confirmed that the Nationwide Series will continue to race as long as the conditions are safe. Following the same procedures as last weekend, NASCAR will red-flag the race to have everyone switch to wet weather gear. Then they will continue to monitor the condition of the track and only stop the race if it becomes unsafe for the competitors. In the event of a downpour or standing water on the track NASCAR will stop the race. (TheGlen) (08-07-08)

AT WATKINS GLEN: In three Nationwide Series starts at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has recorded one win, one top-five finish and two top-10s. He has an average start of eighth and an average finish of 16th. Earnhardt hopes the additional seat-time in Saturday’s 200-mile event will help him and his team during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series contest on Sunday. LOCAL CONNECTION: Josh Koch, 26, grew up in Springville, N.Y., just 117 miles from Watkins Glen. Koch, the mechanic and catch-can man on the No. 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet team, raced go-karts growing up and first got interested in motor sports after talking with his uncle, who works for Joe Gibbs Racing. Koch moved to North Carolina in 2005 to pursue a career in racing. He worked for Shaver Motorsports, a road-racing organization in Charlotte, and the No. 47 Nationwide Series team before joining the No. 5 crew in spring 2007.DALE EARNHARDT JR., DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 GODADDY.COM CHEVROLET (ON SWITCHING FROM OVALS TO THE WATKINS GLEN ROAD COURSE.): “We don’t do that much road course racing, and we rarely like to test road courses. Running the Nationwide car is really the best way to get acclimated with the track and get back up to speed. When you just run the Cup car all weekend like we do at Sonoma, you spend the first day just learning the track again — at least I do. I feel like sometimes that puts me a little bit behind the eight ball. So I thought when they allowed me to pick and choose a couple races in the Nationwide Series, that would be a good reason to run Watkins Glen. I would be able to go in there and get a couple hours on the racetrack before I got in my Cup car. I thought maybe I could help my Cup guys by running better laps and getting better feedback to them for the car. It should be fun. I have a pretty good memory of winning there against Ron Fellows in ‘98. That really meant a lot to me to beat him there. I really respect him as a road racer.”(Hendrick Motorsports)

Atlanta to drop to one truck race in 2009: Atlanta Motor Speedway will host one truck race in 2009, not two as it has since 2005, track president Ed Clark told ESPN.com Tuesday. Atlanta will retain its spring date on the truck calendar and relinquish its fall race. Iowa Speedway, reported this week to be a candidate to replace Mexico City on the 2009 Nationwide Series schedule, may also be in contention for Atlanta’s vacated spot on the truck schedule, a source said. NASCAR officials would not comment on the 2009 truck schedule but said they would again have 25 races.(ESPN.com)(8-7-2008)

Allen in the #81 for RMM: Willie Allen has signed a one-race deal with Randy Moss Motorsports for Saturday night’s Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. The tricky triangle wrap-up and more: Pocono itself is a whole different animal. A driver that wins on the tri-oval can often be called lucky, but when he does it more than once, he should be called master. While the Pocono International Speedway is not as exclusive as Daytona or Indianapolis it is still one of the most challenging and difficult tracks on the circuit.

Economic Squeeze Need Not Apply to Big Names: Ask Tony Stewart how a weak economy is affecting him. His answer will be a simple one: not at all. Stewart recently secured solid sponsorship and manufacturer support at his new team, Stewart/Haas Racing, and is finalizing plans for a second team already.

The Nascar Insiders
I’d Like to Thank the Guys Back at the Shop
It’s a quote you’ve probably heard a thousand times from drivers being interviewed. They always thank their sponsors, maybe the crew chief, and the guys back in the shop. Those all important ”guys back in the shop” are what separates the good teams from the bad.
