Riggs Left In Limbo
After a potential top-five finish was lost on fuel mileage, Scott Riggs still had enough spirit to help his crew push the No. 66 Haas CNC Racing machine back to the Pocono Raceway garage. Out of gas and nearly out of hope, Riggs is a driver with little-to-no job security these days. Nevertheless, he persevered and raced up front throughout the Sunoco Red Cross 500 on Sunday for a team he’s convinced won’t have him back next season. The team he joined at the end of 2007 becomes Stewart-Haas Racing next year, co-owned by two-time Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. The move has Riggs, for a second time in two years, looking for a new job. “I just know in my heart I’m not going to be here next year, but not being a big enough man coming to tell me, [new management] must not understand what kind of character I have. If [management] thinks I would lay down behind the wheel if [they]told me …” said Riggs, frustrated that an announcement has yet to be made regarding the team’s future driver lineup.

Fellows In No. 01 Car This Week
Ron Fellows said after winning the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Nationwide Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve that he will drive Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s No. 01 Chevrolet in this weekend’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International. Fellows will replace regular driver Regan Smith the No. 01 entry. The team sits 32nd in the Cup owners standings, 87 points ahead of the 36th-place team of Michael McDowell. Fellows is an accomplished road racer who has five NASACR national series races at the Glen. Smith is entered in the DEI No. 81, giving the organization five cars in the race.

D’Hondt wants to run full 2009 schedule: Eddie D’Hondt wants to establish himself as an owner at the top levels of NASCAR, but things haven’t exactly worked out so far. A former executive with Robert Yates Racing, he initially tried to start a team in conjunction with an established motorsports operation. The formation of Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports was announced at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August 2006, bringing together D’Hondt with Bill Riley, Bob Riley and Jim Matthews, partners in Riley Technologies, a builder of entries for the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series among other racing-related endeavors. The team ran several Nationwide Series events and one Sprint Cup Series race in 2007 but dissolved following the ‘07 season due to a lack of sponsorship. At that time, D’Hondt announced he planned to remain involved as an owner with the renamed D’Hondt Motorsports. D’Hondt envisions running the full Nationwide Series schedule with driver Jack Bailey in 2009, but he’s looking to jump-start things this season. And that’s why none other than Kyle Busch will be in D’Hondt Motorsports’ #92 Toyota at Watkins Glen.(ESPN.com)(8-5-2008)

Newman to drive Supercuts Dodge at WG: Ryan Newman will pilot the Supercuts Dodge this weekend in the Zippo 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen International. It will mark Newman’s first start of the season in the Nationwide Series and his first-ever driving duty for Fitz Motorsports. Driving the Supercuts Dodge on Saturday serves many purposes. The main goal is to win the race, but it will also provide me with additional seat time at the track that will sharpen my skills for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race. I’m looking forward to the race and to working with the Fitz team,” Newman said.(Fitz Motorsports PR)(8-5-2008)

Double-duty for Hornish; first series start at The Glen: Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the #12 Penske Truck Rental Dodge Charger for Penske Racing, will compete in both the NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series events at Watkins Glen International this weekend. The Zippo 200 will mark Hornish’s second career Nationwide Series road course event. Earlier this season at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Hornish qualified 11th and finished 13th in the Penske Truck Rental Dodge. This will be Hornish’s first NASCAR Nationwide Series start at the 2.45-mile road course.(Penske Racing PR)(8-5-2008)

Racing Resources Says…
* Ron Fellows won the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Presented by Dodge at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
* The race made history when the cars restarted on Lap 14 with rain tires. It was the first time that cars competed in a NASCAR race with rain tires. The race was called early due to rain after 48 of the scheduled 74 laps.
* Fellows scored his fourth career victory in his 13th career start. It was his fourth NNS road-course victory, tying him for most road-course wins in the series with Terry Labonte.
* Fellows became the second different winner in the two races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He joins Kevin Harvick, who won the inaugural race there last year.
* Fellows gave JR Motorsports its third NNS victory. All three JR Motorsports victories have come in 2008 and have been won by different drivers.
* Chevy posted its fifth win in 2008 and second at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
* Fellows won the race due to pit strategy: He last pit on Lap 22 while second-place Patrick Carpentier last pit on Lap 41. Carpentier finished second for the second straight year. He finished second at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year after winning the pole in his NNS debut. Fellows is from Toronto and Carpentier is from Joliette, Quebec, making it an all Canadian front row.
* Marcos Ambrose, who led a race-high 27 laps, finished third after a too-fast-entering penalty on Lap 42. He had more than a four-second lead before heading to pit road.
* Ron Hornaday, who finished fourth, posted his best NNS road-course finish in his sixth such start. His best previous road-course finish was 10th at Watkins Glen in July 2001.
* Jacques Villeneuve and Joey Logano were both running in the top 10 before the final caution came. However, both cars were involved in accidents during the caution laps. Logano was running fourth before his accident on Lap 48. Villeneuve was running sixth before his accident on Lap 47.
* The race featured four cautions for 12 laps, including two cautions for rain. It featured three lead changes among four drivers. Fellows led one time for seven laps. He took the lead for the first time on Lap 42.
* The top 10 consisted of four Fords, four Chevys, a Dodge and a Toyota.(ESPN.com)(8-5-2008)

Double Down at The Glen for Burton: In addition to his duties behind the wheel of the #31 AT&T Chevy, Burton, a 27-time race winner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, will drive RCR’s #29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in the Zippo 200 on Saturday, August 9. Burton returns to the seat of the Holiday Inn Chevy after a three-race hiatus.(Richard Childress Racing PR)(8-5-2008)

Coleman to Raise Lupus Awareness at Watkins Glen: While Brad Coleman’s #27 Ford will carry the familiar black Carino’s Italian Grill theme this weekend at Watkins Glen, it will also boast a special partner to help raise awareness and funds for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation. The associate sponsorship is set to announce Chris Paradysz’s “Life without Lupus Ride for the Cure” where he will ride his bike, solo, to Daytona starting in NYC November 20th to raise awareness and money for Lupus research and a cure. Paradysz is a board member of the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and parent of a teenage daughter affected by the disease.(Brad Coleman PR)(8-5-2008)

Rookie Notes for Watkins Glen: Landon Cassill was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. Cassill scored a 14th-place finish and claimed top rookie honors for the third time in the last four races. Cassill trails Bryan Clauson by six points (147-141) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the 9 Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.
A Raybestos Rookie has won two pole positions in the Nationwide Series this season. Clauson grabbed the top starting spot for the Winn-Dixie 250 at Daytona (race No. 18) while Cassill claimed the top starting position at the Camping World RV Sales 200 at New Hampshire.
Brad Coleman was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the 2007 Zippo 200, scoring a fifth-place finish.(Raybestos PR)(8-5-2008)

JACK ROUSH, Car Owner – Roush Fenway Ford Fus– WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RACING IN THE RAIN AT MONTREAL? “First of all, NASCAR from an officiating point of view did a great job. You look at what happens in an average race when you’ve got a wreck or an inclement situation – you’ve got pending rain and the prospect of having rain stop and start – they’ve got a lot of experience with that. They know how to predict what’s going to happen. Nobody in the tower there, that I’m aware of, had any experience from NASCAR’s side dealing with a rain event like that. They made really great judgments. They worked through it. It would have been nice if they could have run the full measure of laps, but they got through it and called a great race. It was great that Ron Fellows won for the Canadian interest that was there, so it was not an unhappy result, even though we would have liked to have seen a Ford product prevail.”ANY SURPRISES? “It turned out to be a great tire that was extraordinarily durable. It went through the dry period without getting hurt and still had enough edge on it and enough groove in it that when the track got wetter again, they still worked pretty good. It was possible to run the number of laps that were run on one set of rain tires and that was my biggest surprise. I figured as much effort that was being made to dry the track before they put the rain tires on that the rain tires would last just a few laps and everybody would be in to put on either a second set of rain tires or dries. As it turned out, the tire was right for the circumstance and NASCAR made great decisions and the result was good.”(Fordracing)

Patrick Carpentier, Driver, No. 10 Charter Dodge Charger
Weekly Dodge Motorsports Teleconference Transcript

WERE YOU SURPRISED THAT MORE DRIVERS IN THE MONTREAL RACE DIDN’T GO WITH WINDSHIELD WIPERS VERSUS RAIN-X?
A: Yeah, I was surprised. We were trying to use everything we could. The windshield wipers worked for a while. At one point they stopped working, but the Rain-X did the job. Where the windshield was, I couldn’t see out the right side of the car. I noticed that the windshield would fog up more where the windshield wiper was. So sometimes I would shut it off (the windshield wiper) in the fast straightaways because the wind was too strong for the wiper to come back down. Then I would turn it back on in the low speed corners just to clean it up and to keep the fog away. I think some of the guys that didn’t have a windshield wiper got caught by that. The thing that made me laugh is when I saw Carl Edwards on the big screen squeeging out of the window. I thought that was the highlight of the race. I was like, “Where the heck did he get that squeegee at?” I thought maybe he stopped at a gas station on the way here to the track. It was funny.

Benson Poised To Join Elite Group
08-05-2008 | TruckSeries.com Report
Benson Poised To Join Elite Group It is widely known that the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is full of tough competition. So it’s a rare accomplishment for a driver to win three races in a row. It’s only happened five times. Should Johnny Benson find Victory Lane Saturday, it would mark Benson’s third consecutive victory. He won twice last month at Kentucky Speedway and O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Hopefully, the third time will be a charm for Benson. Last season, the series veteran won at Bristol Motor Speedway followed by a victory at Gateway International Raceway. The next race, however, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, saw Benson end his day in eighth. In 2006, Benson brought home back-to-back wins at Michigan and Milwaukee. Going for the third win, he had to settle for a ninth-place finish at Kansas

Gordon, Kile Looking to Clinch
By Paul Warner

Miller Lite 250 on Tap for SoBo

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-If Benny Gordon can get out of the Miller Lite 250 at South Boston (Va.) Speedway on Saturday, August 9 without allowing Gary St. Amant to pull within 100 points, he will clinch his fourth Sears Auto Center Northern Division title. But that’s not the first thing on the DuBois, Pa., native’s mind.
“I’ve got some unfinished business at South Boston,” said Gordon, who finished second to Dan Abold in the season-opening, rain-shortened event at SoBo. “My goal is to win, because we should have won the first race.”

Gordon, who started from the Awesome Awnings Pole in the first race at South Boston, decided to pit on Lap 17 and gave the lead to Abold, who started ninth in the 32-car field.

Gordon quickly charged back to the front, trying feverishly to retake the lead before the rain came. Gordon ducked under Abold several times, but the 3-time Northern Division champ couldn’t make it past Abold before persistent showers forced the race to be called on Lap 161.

“I’m still not over that yet,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford.

A Season Ago: Fitzpatrick started on the pole, but the race was dominated by his Fitzpatrick Motorsports teammate, Thomson, who started the race right behind him in the third position. Thomson went on to lead 181 of the 200 laps, eventually beating Mark Dilley to the finish line by .703 seconds. It was Thomson’s second career Canadian Tire Series victory.

Ranger Turns Heads In NASCAR Nationwide Series Debut
In the end, the conditions proved to be less than ideal for Andrew Ranger’s NASCAR Nationwide Series debut, but the events transpiring prior to the rain falling on Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve left little doubt as to the youngster’s ability to handle any type of racecar.

The 21 year-old out of Roxton Pond, Quebec, posted the eighth-fastest lap in Friday’s practice session. And just moments after winning the Canadian Tire Series event in exciting fashion in front of his hometown fans, he qualified the No. 22 Supercuts/Tide/Wal-Mart Dodge 15th.

Before the rains came, Ranger gradually moved forward and inside the top 10. Soon after all the cars were brought to pit road to install the rain tires, Ranger went to work. He turned the fourth-fastest lap under wet conditions and reached fifth place in the running order, causing veteran NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace to sing Ranger’s praises on ESPN2’s coverage of the race.

A radio malfunction, however, precipitated a series of unscheduled pit stops that erased all of the gained ground and then some. He finished the rain-shortened event in the 29th position.

“I could not see anything and the radio was not working,” said Ranger. “Regardless, I am very satisfied with my race because I kept the car on the track until the end and I was able to keep up with the leaders for a good part of the race.”

Ranger, once again, will be behind the wheel of the Fitz Motorsports No. 22 Dodge this Saturday for the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Watkins Glen.

The Nascar Insiders
Ever Tried to Do Your Job Backward?

I have…

The Nationwide and Cup Series are heading north this weekend to the Finger Lakes region of New York and the historic Watkins Glen road course. The Glen and Infineon always present unique challenges to the drivers because all of a sudden they need to turn left and right. What you will also see challenge these teams this weekend is the backwards pit stop. Infineon Raceway’s pit road is situated so that the cars come down like they do at any other track. The Glen’s is not. When the drivers come out of turn eleven, instead of hanging the normal left, they go right. This means the cars are in the stalls backwards.
