Stock Car Gazette, Tuesday, August 5, 2008

My apologies for the web-only edition yesterday. I could go into the long boring technical details, but then that would put you to sleep. Suffice it to say I messed up with a too-large edition which the e-mail server decided it would not handle.

Thanks to all of you who hung with us and visited the website yesterday for your daily dose of Stock Car Gazette news.

Here’s the Tuesday edition of the Stock Car Gazette for this week, containing all the latest NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and ARCA RE/MAX news, along with a sprinkling of NASCAR Canadian Tire Series as garnish.

An imbedded journalist?
Last year at this time I was looking for a new way to cover the NASCAR races at Pocono Raceway. I’d photographed sixteen consecutive races by that point, and it seemed as though I had found myself in the middle of a very large rut.

Goodyear To Make Bigger Tire
A bigger tire could be in NASCAR’s future. In the wake of last week’s tire controversy at Indianapolis, where some of its tires failed, Goodyear is looking ahead to a tire that could work better with NASCAR’s new car, a bigger, heavier vehicle than the previous models used in Sprint Cup. “We had some discussion about a larger tire … several years ago with NASCAR when we started this whole discussion about the [new car],” said Stu Grant, general manager of worldwide racing for Goodyear, the exclusive tire supplier for NASCAR’s top three professional series. “But, obviously, we’ve been working with the current size on the [new car]. This spring, we decided to ramp that [new] program up.”

Driver In Critical Condition
A race car driver, Kenny Biro from Indiana, is in critical condition after an accident at Paducah International Raceway. A spokesman for Vanderbilt Medical Center said on Sunday morning that Biro of Bargerstown is in critical but stable condition. According to a source close to the family, Biro was still unconscious as of late Sunday night and in the hospital’s Trauma-ICU unit. Biro was involved in a single-car wreck on Friday at PIR competing in the Midwest Sprint Car Series. A press release from PIR mentioned Friday’s race results but did not include information on the near-death accident in which Biro’s car flipped several times and a Jaws of Life machine was used to pull him from the wreckage. Biro was flown to the Nashville hospital.

With the thought that Scott Riggs won’t be asked to stay with the Stewart-Haas, Riggs said he has been in talks with other teams about 2009. “I’ve been having a lot of conversations,” he said. “I’m trying to figure out what is going to happen with me. I know this organization is on the way up and going to have a great group of guys and drivers coming on board. It will be interesting to see where my feet land and I’ve been talking to a lot of people, but right now I’m focused on what we are doing and trying to be the best we can be for the rest of this year.”(NASCAR.com), hearing that Riggs has talked to Bill Davis Racing, Yates Racing and Robby Gordon Motorsports and that sponsor State Water Heaters could move with him.(8-5-2008)

Driven to the Outdoors schemes to be run: The timing for the “Driven to the Outdoors” program is the third quarter …which aligns with the launch of hunting season. A program targeted towards the outdoors enthusiasts is a solid, strategic fit with the NASCAR fan. Four drivers will run special “Driven to the Outdoors”. At Bristol three drivers will run the schemes: #1-Truex Jr., #07-Bowyer and #15-Menard. And #29-Harvick will run the scheme at Lowe’s Motor Speedwat in October. See images of the schemes on my Paint Scheme Gallery.(8-5-2008) www.jayski.com/schemes/paintschemes.htm

Fellows in the #01, Smith in the #81: The Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen International entry list is out, it shows the #01 DEI Chevy with Ron Fellows driving and Regan Smith, the regular driver of the #01 in a 5th DEI car, the #81 Chevy [yes a 5th team, see note below], crew chiefed by Rich Lavalette. Max Papis is listed in the #70, Brian Simo in the #34, Marcos Ambrose in the #21, Kyle Petty is back in the #45. Boris Said in the #60. Reed Sorenson is listed in the #41, he was replaced by Scott Pruett in the car at Infineon Raceway, but the #41 team is safely in the top-35 in owners points, so Sorenson may run the car. NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell has confirmed that Iowa Speedway is one of the candidates to replace Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on the 2009 Nationwide Series schedule. NASCAR has already said it would not return to Mexico for a fifth race there next year, and speculation was rampant that Iowa would be the replacement. “I’d say there’s more than two [tracks], but [Iowa is] absolutely one of the tracks under consideration that we’ve had conversations with,” O’Donnell said. “… We definitely want to find a replacement. We will be at the same number of races as last year. We’re still in that process. We’ve got a couple of good candidates. We’ll probably about two weeks away from being ready to announce our schedule for ’09.”(SceneDaily.com)(8-4-2008)

NASCAR plans return to Montreal: The Nationwide Series appears likely to return to Montreal for 2009 and it could be the only international race on the No. 2 series’ schedule. NASCAR has already said it would not return to Mexico City next year, but NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell said officials from the sanctioning body “anticipate” Montreal being back on the schedule for 2009. O’Donnell said Circuit Gilles Villeneuve would not host a Sprint Cup date in 2009, and he would not speculate on whether the Cup series would race there beyond ’09. “We were a little bit surprised just how big NASCAR is in general in Canada,” O’Donnell said.(SceneDaily.com)(8-4-2008)
