ESPN: Newman Headed To Stewart-Hass Racing
Ryan Newman has reached a verbal agreement to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing next season, a NASCAR source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Wednesday. The deal could take up to a month to finalize and announce as negotiations continue for car sponsors. Newman reached the agreement after Joe Gibbs Racing was unable to nail down sponsorship to start a fourth team. JGR president J.D. Gibbs confirmed on Sunday at Indianapolis that Newman no longer was a factor in the team’s plans and that a fourth team was unlikely for 2009. Newman, speaking through a Penske spokesperson, said he is still working on the 2009 plans and he has no timetable for finalizing anything at this point.

USA International Speedway Will Close
What began as whispered rumors more than a year ago became reality Wednesday when USA International Speedway President Billy Martino confirmed that the Lakeland (Florida) racetrack had been sold. “It’s gonna be our last race,” said Martino of this weekend’s FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Model Caddy’s on the Beach 125. An emotional Martino said the track had been sold but that specifics regarding the sale, including the purchasing party and amount, would not be disclosed until the official statement is made Monday. The sale stunned many in the racing community. Martino said the track would be torn down and that warehouses would be built on the site.

Manufacturers Will Stay In NASCAR
With four manufacturers each spending an estimated $100 million-plus annually in NASCAR’s premier series, the financial benefit of their involvement must be significant. Despite the industry’s gloomy economic outlook, automakers still consider NASCAR a showplace for its showrooms, which makes racing expenditures worthwhile. General Motors will slice some motor sports programs as part of $10 billion in budget cuts, and auto analysts have warned Chrysler might consider bankruptcy protection in the face of declining sales. But industry observers aren’t expecting manufacturers to desert the sport as in the 1970s. “I’m not going to be surprised if everybody reduces spending on NASCAR, including Toyota,” says Ray Evernham, co-owner of Gillett Evernham Motorsports. “But if they stay in business, I can’t see any would pull out completely. We didn’t have 75 million fans in the ’70s.”

Silly Season 2008: so where do things stand with news and rumors in the Sprint Cup Series? Let’s break down a few a day for the next week or so, also see my 2009 Team Chart for all the teams www.jayski.com/pages/2009teams.htm
#00 Haven’t heard much on this team, they could end up not running in 2009 as no sponsors have been announced. Driver Michael McDowell has been rumored to a Penske ride, but haven’t heard much else.
#01 the team has run without a full time sponsor all season, Regan Smith could return if DEI chooses to stick with four cars and sponsors can be found or the team could fold and DEI scale back to a 3 car team [#1, #8, #15]. There were rumors a few weeks ago that Teresa Earnhardt was looking to sell or find investors, but they were refuted
#07 Clint Bowyer re-signed thru 2011, Jack Daniel’s is good thru 2009. BUT rumors have places UPS as Bowyer’s new sponsor, so what becomes of Jack Daniel’s? hearing they could rotate around the other RCR cars, #31 and #29 [like Reese's, Prilosec & Lennox has in the past and DirecTV with the #07], doubtful General Mills would allow that on the 4th team.
#1 Bass Pro Shop’s was rumored to Stewart Hass but they are signed with DEI thru 2009. Martin Truex Jr. was rumored to Penske with UPS [looks unlikely now], RCR’s 4th team and Gibb’s #20. DEI says they have an option on Truex for 2009, Truex doesn’t agree BUT supposedly, Truex will be back with DEI and re-sign soon, possibly thru 2011. There were rumors a few weeks ago that Teresa Earnhardt was looking to sell or find investors, but they were refuted
#2 Have heard of no changes with the Miller Lite team and Kurt Busch is signed thru at least 2009.
#3 get asked often, will RCR use the #3 again. That is a big NO, at least until/if his grandson, Austin Dillon, who runs the #3 in Late Models, advances into Cup. Looks like Dillon may run the Truck Series in 2009.
#4 looks like Morgan McClure Motorsports will not be back. They are selling off inventory at last check of their site and Tony Stewart announced that his second Stewart Haas Racing team will use the #4, possibly for Ryan Newman, who supposedly has agreed to sign with Stewart to drive there in 2009.
#5 this ride will change, but it is locked in for 2009. Mark Martin takes over for Casey Mears. Martin will run the full season for the first time since 2005 since son Matt quit racing. Carquest and Kelloggs back as co-sponsors. Mears is rumored to about every open ride, but it would be cool to see a Mears back with Penske.(8-1-2008)

As for the UPS sponsorship? after hearing all kinds of rumors about the UPS sponsorship [currently at Michael Waltrip Racing in the #44 of David Reutimann], some which included: Truex to Penske with UPS [see #1 Team News and Links page in early May]; to Richard Childress Racing and the #07 and driver Clint Bowyer [see #07 Team News and Links page] with Jack Daniel’s sponsorship either rotating around some of RCR’s other teams, like the #29 and #31 OR going to Stewart Haas’s 2nd team, the #4 Chevy; and to Stewart Haas’s #4 team with Ryan Newman driving. BUT am now hearing the deal with RCR is close to being done with Bowyer’s team. No word on what will happen with Jack Daniel’s…IF this happens..of course.(8-1-0008)

Gillett Evernham will decide Aug. 15 if Carpentier will be with the team in 2009. A boost to Carpentier’s contract renewal would be a top-35 finish in owner’s points, guaranteeing his Dodge a starting spot in the first five races of next season. Carpentier is four spots behind that cutoff, still forced to qualify his way into each race. But he has only missed three races this year, two because rain canceled qualifying and the third for a blown tire. Qualifying, Carpentier says, is the easy part.(USA Today)(8-1-2008)

Johnson to appear on Regis and Kelly: #48-Jimmie Johnson is scheduled to be on “Live with Regis and Kelly” this Friday, August 1st. Johnson will be participating in the show’s special segment of Grilling with the Stars and talking about Jimmie Johnson Foundation events. Check local listings for channels and times.(JJF PR)

Pocono Goodyear Tire Notes: This is the second time Goodyear has brought this combination of left- and right-side tires to Pocono Raceway, having successfully raced on these codes at the track in June . . . Sprint Cup teams have also raced this tire set-up earlier this season at Bristol . . . as on all NASCAR’s ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Pocono . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. The estimated pit window is every 34-36 laps, based on fuel mileage.(Goodyear PR), see full notes, codes, pressures on my Pocono Race Info page and for the season, see my Tires Stats page.(8-1-2008)

Johnson’s brother to run ARCA race at Pocono: Jarit Johnson, Jimmie’s brother, is scheduled to pilot the GermaneRED / Germane Tooling Group Chevy in ARCA Pennsylvania 200 at Pocono Raceway on Saturday August 2nd. Other sponsors that have joined support for the program include: Fox Realty, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships and The Jimmie Johnson Foundation. Johnson and the team will receive support as well from Johnson Excavation and RFL Clothing. Johnson has one previous start in the ARCA Series, in August of 2005 at Michigan.(ARCA Racing)(8-1-2008)

Chrissy Wallace to make ARCA debut: Germain Racing driver Chrissy Wallace [and Mike's daughter] will make her ARCA RE/MAX Series debut this weekend at Pocono Raceway driving in the Hattori Racing Enterprises #01 Germain Toyota Camry. Wallace, a graduate of late model stock car racing, has run three Craftsman Truck Series races this season.(ARCA Racing)(8-1-2008)

Congrats: Jeff Dickerson, agent with Motorsports Management International and spotter for Kyle Busch, and Crystal Holloway welcomed a baby girl today. Contessa (Tessa) Fay Dickerson is 18.5 inches long, 7 lbs., 10 oz. Mother and Tessa are doing well, and Dickerson plans to be back at work for Busch at Pocono on Sunday.(7-31-2008)

Get Well - Herman Sadler: Well Wishes go out to Herman Sadler, Jr., the father of Hermie and #19-Elliott Sadler. Mr. Sadler was airlifted from Emporia, VA to a Richmond hospital yesterday morning after suffering from difficulty breathing. Mr. Sadler returned home Thursday evening and is doing better.(7-31-2008)

Former crew chief involved in Mooresville wreck: A man with two previous drunk driving convictions was responsible for a deadly crash on Brawley School Road [Mooresville NC] on Thursday morning, according to state troopers. And investigators say Tim Kohuth will face a third DWI charge as a result of Thursday’s collision. He was allegedly drunk when he crashed a flatbed truck into an SUV, killing a man in the SUV and injuring the man’s wife. Neighbors say Kohuth was driving the truck because his personal vehicle has a Breathalyzer test connected the ignition, a result of Kohuth’s previous DWI convictions. The crash happened around 11 a.m. Thursday on Brawley School Road and Mallard Way. The victim’s wife was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Kohuth remains in Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. An N.C. state trooper is standing by at the hospital to take him into custody when he’s released. He’ll be charged with DWI, and investigators expect more charges to follow. According to NASCAR.com, Kohuth is a former crew chief and general manager for the [now defunct] Ultra Motorsports #2 truck.(wcnc.com)

Bill Elliott Driver Development Program Adds Legends Stand Out Casey Roderick to Stable of Young Drivers
(Dawsonville, GA – July 31, 2008) The Bill Elliott Driver Development (BEDD) program announces today the addition of 15-year-old racing prodigy Casey Roderick to its stable of young drivers. Roderick joins current BEDD teammates Chase Elliott, Mitch Cobb, Trey Poole, and John King, who operate out of the Dawsonville, GA, and shop of Bill Elliott Racing.

Roderick has been considered one of the most successful drivers to compete on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thunder Ring, where current NASCAR drivers Joey Logano, David Ragan and Reed Sorenson started their careers. Starting with his first Thursday Thunder Series Bandolero Bandits championship in 2003, Roderick has won six Legends titles at AMS. He also sits second in all-time career feature wins at AMS with 23 victories, ahead of both Logano (20 wins) and Sorenson (22). Roderick is also the reigning Most Popular Driver for the Thursday Thunder Series, earning the title in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Roderick also holds the honor of being the youngest Pro Series driver (age 13) in INEX history to win the Summer Shootout Series championship at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in 2006, a record previously held by Sorenson. He followed that up with another Summer Shootout Series Pro championship in 2007.

To say that Roderick has had an impressive career would be an understatement. His most notable accomplishments include the 2007 Legends Car Asphalt National Pro Championship, the 2007 INEX Pro National Points Championship, the 2007 Lanier National Speedway Legends Pro Championship, the 2007 Georgia Asphalt Series Pro Championship, the 2006 Legends National Pro Division title and the 2006 Governor’s Cup at Lanier National Speedway, the 2006 Mason-Dixon Meltdown Legends feature win at South Boston Speedway, and the 2006 Mopar-PRI Sprint & Midget Classic Legends feature win at Orlando SpeedWorld.

Ranger in the #22 at Montreal: Andrew Ranger will drive in the Nationwide Series race this weekend. Ranger, who will also drive in the NASCAR Canada series, will pilot the #22 of Fitz Motosports. Lepage, Front Row Motorsports file suit against Specialty Racing: Frontstretch.com has learned that Kevin Lepage and Front Row Motorsports owner Bob Jenkins have filed a lawsuit against Specialty Racing, LLC, freezing the assets of the company while attempting to acquire its owner points, equipment, and money they claim they’re owed.
The basis of the suit began in late May, when Specialty Racing informed Lepage that they did not have sufficient funds to run the Nationwide event in Dover, Delaware. In response, Lepage informed Specialty Racing about a proposal that would allow Bob Jenkins from Front Row Motorsports to supply a car, transporter, and engine to run under the #61 banner that weekend. The lawsuit states that after speaking to a NASCAR official, Specialty Racing co-owner Charles Shoffner learned that in order for his team to earn owner’s points in a Nationwide event, they would have to supply the employees, equipment, transporter, and cars for the entire weekend. Therefore, his team could not earn points under Lepage’s proposal.
But even with that limitation, Shoffner states that starting at the June Nashville event and concluding at Daytona, Jenkins did provide equipment to use while Specialty Racing incurred the team expenses. However, when approached in July about signing an agreement that would allow owner’s points to be transferred to Front Row Motorsports, Shoffner declined until the paperwork was reviewed by counsel and NASCAR. Jenkins and Lepage then responded by filing the lawsuit at the end of this month. (Frontstretch Newsletter)(7-31-2008)

Since road-course racing was re-introduced in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2005 following a three-year hiatus, only once in eight races has a road-course specialist won (Juan Pablo Montoya, Mexico, 2007).In the other seven events, its been stock car drivers who have won, including three series regulars.Patrick Carpentier, Ron Fellows, Max Papis (No. 64 Atreus Homes & Communities Chevrolet), Scott Pruett (No. 40 Fastenal Dodge), Boris Said (No. 25 No Fear / Team Smithfield Ford) and Scott Gaylord (No. 52 Jimmy Means Racing Ford) are some key road-course aces in the field seeking to join Montoya’s one-man victory band.(NASCAR) (07-31-08)

The field in Montreal contains a mix of hometown heroes, series-only regulars, double-duty drivers and up-and comers. But ask season-long series observers who to watch and even with the entry of road-course aces, former NASCAR national series champions and veteran drivers the focus should be on the young talent on display. Brad Keselowski, 24, is vying for a championship. Joey Logano (No. 20 GameStop Toyota), 18, will make his road course debut but comes in with one win, two poles, three top fives and five top 10s in his six races. Landon Cassill (No. 4 Miccosukee Chevrolet), 19, has a pole and four top 10s in his last seven races. Steve Wallace (No. 66 5-Hour Energy Dodge), 20, put up his then-career best of 10th at Mexico City in April.Perhaps the sleeper of the group is Brad Coleman (No. 27 Cottonelle Ford). Despite his age (20), Coleman has extensive road-course experience that has translated well to stock cars.He shares the world record for youngest team in Rolex 24 GT class to claim a top-10 finish with Colin Braun, 19, who will serve as the sub driver for Greg Biffle (No. 16 3M Ford). Braun won his first career pole at Mexico City and claimed another last Saturday at O’Reilly Raceway Park. Coleman was eighth at this event last year and followed with a fifth-place finish at Watkins Glen International one week later. “These days, a top driver can only bring an oval car up a few spots over its’ technical potential because there’s so much good equipment and so many good drivers out there,” Coleman said. “But the playing field balances out the equipment a little more on a road course and allows drivers to make a bigger difference in the outcome.”(NASCAR) (07-31-08)

Substitute drivers other than Colin Braun for Greg Biffle and Stephen Leicht for Clint Bowyer include: Erik Darnell for reigning series champion Carl Edwards (No. 60 CitiFinancial Ford); Auggie Vidovich for David Ragan (No. 6 Discount Tire Ford) and Chris Cook for David Reutimann (No. 99 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota). … Jason Keller (No. 11 America’s Incredible Pizza Co. Chevrolet), the series’ all-time starts leader with 444, will carry a rookie stripe in Montreal having never raced on the course before. … Reutimann’s TRD engine tuner, Yves LaFrance, is a native of Quebec and Dave Carrier, from Saskatchewan, is a mechanic / catch can man for Eric McClure’s No. 24 Hefty Brands Chevrolet.(NASCAR) (07-31-08)

The father—son team of Stanton Barrett (No. 30 NOS Energy Drink Chevrolet) and his father Stan (No. 61 Ford), 65, are entered in the event and will try once again to run side-by-side on a road course. The Barretts were also entered earlier this year in Mexico City and Stan Barrett participated in practice. But it was ultimately decided that the elder Barrett — who hadn’t competed in NASCAR since 1990 — would hold off until Montreal in order to gain more seat time.Stan Barrett was the first man to exceed the speed of sound in a ground vehicle, reaching 739.666 mph in 1979. He started 19 races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from 1980-90 with two top-10 finishes. His son has over 150 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts and finished 17th in this race last year. Both are accomplished stuntmen and are credited with roles in some of Hollywood’s top action movies.(NASCAR) (07-31-08)

On Montreal-This venue is one of the neatest we go to,” said Joe Balash, NASCAR Nationwide Series director, about Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.“There’s almost a mystique about a racetrack located on a man-made island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River in such a historic city as Montreal.”Of the track itself, Balash noted that the talent of the driver will be the order of the day on Saturday.“It’s a very technical road course — which means the driver’s skills in shifting up through the gears, their coordination of working the gears and brakes, their ability to hit their marks as they hit the corners — really come into play.“Because of all those factors, any small mistake by other drivers can lead to the opportunity to make a pass.(NASCAR) (07-31-08)

Talk about a weird curtain call – though it was a fitting end to an extraordinary inaugural event.Last year’s inaugural race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ended with the typical celebratory burnout – except three different drivers did the celebrating. One was Kevin Harvick, the true winner of the race. One was Robby Gordon, who thought he was the winner of the race – but actually was scored in 18th as the checkered flew. And the other was Patrick Carpentier, hometown hero and runner-up finisher. But the one driver who arguably deserved to be smoking his tires – Marcos Ambrose (No. 59 STP Ford) – was nowhere to be found. Ambrose led a race-high 37 laps before being spun out by Gordon, ending any hope for his first NASCAR win. Still, Ambrose took solace in his impressive run – and hopes a repeat occurs Saturday.Last season, Ambrose racked up race-best stats in practically every key category. He has a Driver Rating of 133.4, an Average Running Position of 2.9, 14 Fastest Laps Run and was the only driver to run all 75 Laps in the Top 15.If not Ambrose, Carpentier could be the driver to beat. He certainly wants it, giving up his NASCAR Sprint Cup ride at Pocono to concentrate only on the Montreal event. Last year, Carpentier exhibited the road course prowess that could result in victory this time around. Carpentier had a Driver Rating of 122.1, an Average Running Position of 6.6, nine Fastest Laps Run and ran all but five laps among the top 15.(NASCAR)But, as is the case whenever NASCAR hits a road course, the so-called “road course ringers” should pose a definite threat. Two in particular had strong runs last season – Scott Pruett and Max Papis. In last year’s Montreal event, Pruett earned a Driver Rating of 112.7 and an Average Running Position of 5.3. Papis had a Driver Rating of 109.3 and an Average Running Position of 8.7.(NASCAR) (07-31-08)
