Stock Car Gazette, Monday, July 28, 2008

I never have particularly liked the stock cars at the Brickyard… it’s just always seemed like a boring race to me. So I chose Sunday afternoon nap time to race time, and it sounds like I made the right choice, based on what I’ve read so far.

We have the full results from the Sprint Cup cars at the Brickyard, the Nationwide and Craftsman Trucks from ORP, and much more right here in the Stock Car Gazette.

Jimmie Johnson wins at The Brickyard in one crazy race
Jimmie Johnson won Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, but the race will be most remembered for being one of the weirdest ever in Sprint Cup. Because tires were wearing to the cords at a rapid rate at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR had to stop the racing with yellow flags every 10 to 12 laps so [...]

Goodyear plans to work with NASCAR to resolve Indy tire issues
Goodyear officials will most likely test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before this year ends in an effort to remedy the tire problems that marred Sunday’s Allstate 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the track. After Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya each had tire problems early in the race, [...]

Jimmie Johnson On Top at the Brickyard
NASCAR put on a race at the Brickyard on Sunday and nobody came. Goodyear tire problems forced the competitors to run a series of trophy dashes. The final segment — and the Allstate 400 title was won by Jimmie Johnson, who held off a hard charging Carl Edwards to take victory for the second time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, his other win coming in 2006. Johnson led a total of 71 laps on way to his 35th win in 239 career races. On the final restart with seven laps to go, Johnson beat Edwards out of the pits and it proved to be the winning move. Denny Hamlin used a two tire strategy to get track position and finished third ahead of Elliott Sadler. A strong run by Jamie McMurray put him in the fifth spot followed by Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton and A.J. Allmendinger to round out the top ten. Kyle Busch maintained his lead in the Sprint Cup point standing by 253 over Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 271 ahead of Jeff Burton.

The race featured eleven cautions for 52 laps, six of those yellows were competition cautions, mandated by NASCAR to allow the teams to change and check the tires. Goodyear brought in extra tires on Sunday morning, ones intended for next week’s race at Pocono, but they were never needed. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Pocono Raceway next Sunday August 3rd, 2008, for the Pennsylvania 500. The race is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM / Eastern Time on ESPN. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Truex Denies Agreement With DEI
Martin Truex Jr. said Saturday after Sprint Cup practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that a published report saying he had reached an agreement in principle to remain at Dale Earnhardt Inc. for two years was not true. Though Truex may well drive for DEI next season, his immediate reaction when asked about the story that appeared on ESPN.com was: “It’s [expletive]. I don’t know what the **** [the reporter] is talking about. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

Petty skipping Pocono too, not back in 2009?: #45-Kyle Petty is expected to skip his second straight race next week at Pocono since his deal with TNT ended, team officials said. “We’re still working through a few things,” said Robbie Loomis, the vice president of racing operations at Petty Enterprises. The most likely candidate is Chad McCumbee, who attempted to qualify the car at Texas earlier this year. Terry Labonte, who replaced Petty on Sunday to guarantee the car got into the field, already has agreed to drive for Gillett Evernham Motorsports next week in place of #10-Patrick Carpentier. Carpentier is racing in the Nationwide Series in Montreal on Saturday and won’t pull double duty. Loomis declined to speculate on whether Petty will drive the #45 car next season.(ESPN.com)(7-28-2008)

Newman not going to the #20 car: Strike Joe Gibbs Racing from the list of potential employers for Ryan Newman. Newman’s name has been most prominently mentioned to land with Stewart-Haas Racing next season. Sources close to the situation said he also has had discussions with JGR, Richard Childress Racing and Gillett Evernham Motorsports. An RCR official said on Friday that he expected Newman to go to Stewart, and JGR president J.D. Gibbs said on Sunday it was unlikely the driver of Penske Racing’s #12 could join his Toyota team. “It would be hard,” Gibbs said before the Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “Another time, another day, maybe. He’s a great individual. You would love to have him on your team. It’s just all those ducks aren’t in a row.” Gibbs did say he was getting closer to naming a driver to replace Tony Stewart in the #20 next season. Joey Logano, the 18-year-old sensation in the Nationwide Series, remains the front-runner for that spot. Gibbs also said speculation JGR would expand to four teams in 2009 was unlikely. “Next year would be hard,” Gibbs said.(ESPN.com)(7-28-2008)

Stremme has talked to Penske about #12 gig: David Stremme, currently a test driver at Penske Racing and Nationwide Series driver for Rusty Wallace Racing, said he has talked with Penske officials about driving the #12 Sprint Cup car next season. The team is looking for a replacement for Ryan Newman, who will leave the team at the end of the year. “We’ve talked,” Stremme said Saturday at O’Reilly Raceway Park. “Obviously, I’m doing testing for them. But there are a lot of opportunities open, too. Who wouldn’t want to be racing for Roger Penske? He’s very successful in motorsports. I like how they do their program.”(SceneDaily)(7-28-2008)

Top-5’s, Top-10’s: #18-Kyle Busch leads all drivers after 20 races in 2008 with 12 Top-5 finishes followed by #99-Edwards and #24-Gordon at 8. #99-Edwards has the most Top-10’s after 20 races with 14, followed by #18-Busch with 13. Full-time drivers who have run all 20 races in 2008 with no top-10 finishes are #77-Hornish Jr. and #15-Menard. Seven drivers have not scored a Top-5 and ran all 20 races: #7-Gordon [last top-5 at Watkins Glen 8/2007], #15-Menard [none so far], #26-McMurray [last at Daytona, a win 7/07], #28-Kvapil [none], #43-Labonte [last at Martinsville in 10/2006], #44-Reutimann [none] and #77-Hornish Jr.[none].(7-27-2008)

Roush Miffed At Goodyear: Team owner Jack Roush got a second-place finish in Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard from Carl Edwards, but he was not in a good mood. Roush said that because his team wasn’t invited to the Goodyear tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in April that involved only three drivers, his engineers and crew chiefs had no idea what to expect this weekend. “We only missed by an inch,” he said. “This is a game of inches, but Goodyear didn’t give us a chance to test here. We were one change behind all the time during practice.” Goodyear tires were wearing out so quickly on the right side of the cars Sunday that NASCAR instituted “competition yellow” flags every 10 to 12 laps. That didn’t help one of Roush’s drivers. Matt Kenseth blew a tire on the 47th of 160 laps. The other Roush Fenway Racing drivers, Jamie McMurray and Greg Biffle, finished sixth and eighth. So it was hardly a bad day for the Ford team. Asked what NASCAR and Goodyear can do to prevent such a situation from occurring again, Roush said, “You need to go talk to Chad Knaus winner Jimmie Johnson’s crew chief. He said it wasn’t going to be a problem with this tire. He and Goodyear have something figured out that the rest of us don’t.”(Tampa Tribune)(7-28-2008)

Nationwide Series will not return to Mexico: NASCAR’s Nationwide Series race in Mexico will be replaced on next year’s schedule by another American race, The Charlotte Observer reported Sunday. “This was never about a single event. The big idea was to strengthen motorsports in Mexico,” NASCAR vice president Robbie Weis told The Observer. Weis would not say which track would add the race, but The Observer cited sources saying it could go to Iowa, a track seven eighths of a mile long that already hosts IndyCar and NASCAR Camping World East series events. The NASCAR Corona Mexico series ran its first points race this season during the April weekend the Nationwide series held its race in Mexico City.(Associated Press / USA Today)(7-27-2008)

Chevy to submit new Nationwide engine for approval in August: Shane Martin, Chevy’s program manager for the Nationwide Series, said at O’Reilly Raceway Park that Chevy plans to submit its next-generation R07 engine next month for approval to run in the Nationwide Series in 2009. Martin said Chevy will submit the engine the second week in August, two weeks before the deadline to have it approved for next season. The R07, which is currently used in the Sprint Cup Series, would have similar internal design as the Toyota engine, which last week was hit with a ruling designed to limit horsepower.(SceneDaily.com)(7-27-2008)

Gordon makes all the right moves in HOOTERS 250 win
By Paul Warner
Sunday, July 27, 2008 4:04:00 PM

Point leader wins second straight race, third of season

Jennerstown, Pa.-Fast cars don’t always win, and good pit strategy doesn’t always guarantee success. But when you put them together, they can add up to a dominating performance, which is exactly what Benny Gordon turned in on Saturday night at Jennerstown Speedway.

Gordon won the pole, short-pitted on Lap 30 and retook the lead for good on Lap 115 en route to victory in the HOOTERS 250 presented by Eaton Electrical at Jennerstown Speedway.

“I couldn’t have had a better car tonight,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford. “The team was perfect. It was just a perfect weekend. We couldn’t have asked for a better place for it to happen.”

Though Gordon won from the pole and led the most laps, Gary St. Amant put a scare into the DuBois, Pa., driver on a late-race restart by jumping alongside going into Turn 1 with 20 laps to go.

“He definitely got my attention,” said Gordon, who took home $13,700.
