Gibbs: Stewart in for rude awakening
Joe Gibbs also hinted that Tony Stewart might be in for a rude awakening. “I think all the way back to when I was thinking of getting into this (in the early 1990s),” Gibbs recalled. “I went to visit Richard Petty because he is a big Redskins fan, plus he’s the icon. “I said to him ‘I’d really like to get into NASCAR.’ He looked at me and said ‘Why?’ “That was a great statement — and probably the same thing I’d say to Tony.” — Winston-Salem Journal

Geoff Bodine Wins Old School Race
Geoff Bodine, who 24 years ago won the final Winston Cup race in Nashville, edged local favorite Sterling Marlin by two car lengths to win the Old School Racing 30-lap race at Music City Motorplex. Eleven former NASCAR drivers including Harry Gant, Randy LaJoie and Dave Marcis started the race, which kicked off the Motorplex’s 50th year of paved racing. Jack Ingram, who won the first Busch race at the track in 1984, brushed the wall on lap seven to force the first of two cautions. He parked his car and did not return. The remaining 10 drivers finished the race. LaJoie, who finished third, won the final Busch race at the fairgrounds track in 2000. Gant was fourth. Lake Speed was fifth.

NASCAR Now Monday: The Monday, July 21, edition of NASCAR Now will expand to an hour and will include host Allen Bestwick leading a roundtable discussion with ESPN analysts and reporters of the weekend’s Nationwide Series race at Gateway International Raceway and the upcoming Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the first Sprint Cup race of the season to be televised by ESPN. The program airs at its new time of 5:00pm/et.
Regan Smith wins at Riverside: Regan Smith not only made good on his promise in 2007 to return for the 2008 Carquest Pro Stock Tour IWK 250 - but his promise to win the race. Smith delighted over 10,000 fans at Riverside International Speedway Saturday night with a NASCAR-style celebration after taking the checkered flag. Fellow DEI driver Aric Almirola finished 7th in the race.(CheckerstoWreckers.com)(7-21-2008)
Busch, Kenseth come up short in ASA race at Iowa; Harvick rain delayed at Oxford: All weekend long Tim Schendel was fast around the 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway as he was able to back up those fast times in practice and qualifying by taking the ASA Midwest Tour Rasmussen Group Twin 75’s. Schendel took the checkered flag while Jonathan Eilen would hold off Matt Kenseth and Donny Reuvers for second. Kenseth, who was making his first visit Iowa Speedway, was pleased with his third place finish. Kyle Busch flew through the field after starting 11th and took over the top spot on lap 8. Busch would then dominate by pulling away from the rest of the field to the halfway break. At the start of the second half, Busch would lead the first four laps until he fell off the pace and retired with mechanical problems.(ASA Midwest Tour)(7-21-2008)
AND: The TD Banknorth 250 featuring Kevin Harvick against a field of top local and regional drivers was postponed Sunday because of rain. Race officials said qualifying heats would resume Monday afternoon, weather permitting. Rain remained in the forecast and there was a flash flood watch in effect through Monday evening. Taking advantage of an off week for Sprint Cup drivers, Harvick chose to spend the weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway. He finished second in his qualifying heat to earn a spot in the feature race.(Associated Press)(7-21-2008)
Mayfield hoping for another chance: Give him good equipment and Jeremy Mayfield believes he can return to the form that got him into the Championship Chase in 2004 and 2005 at Gillett Evernham Motorsports. Unfortunately for Mayfield, his phone is silent. His name is not on the short list of drivers to fill slots at Stewart-Haas Racing, Penske Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing. It’s not there even though his credentials — five wins, 96 top-10s and two trips to the Chase — are better than at least half the drivers in the current 43-car field. “I’m the first one to admit I’ve made mistakes,” he said. “Whether it’s the Ray’s deal and I talked too much or what happened at Penske. … It was little stuff. Nothing big, but it all adds up and that’s why I’m sitting here today.” Mayfield doesn’t know how he’s going to recover from the two worst years of his career, made worse by his father’s death in 2007. He hopes when everything shakes out there’ll be an owner with decent equipment willing to give him a chance. If not, he might start a Craftsman Truck Series team. “I’ve got to make a decision somewhere down the line to do that,” he said. “But once you make that move you know you probably won’t be back in Cup.” And Mayfield wants to be back in Cup so badly that he’s willing to work without a contract and for a percentage of his winnings without a guaranteed salary. He’d love for that to be at Penske. He said leaving that organization was the worst mistake he’s made, slightly ahead of losing his friendship with Evernham.(ESPN.com)(7-20-2008)
Joey Logano says he isn’t campaigning to drive the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Sprint Cup car next season. Even so, the 18-year-old JGR Nationwide Series driver contends that he is interested in the ride, which will be vacated at season’s end by Tony Stewart. “Nothing has really changed,” said Logano at Gateway International Raceway. “It’s pretty much the same deal. If they offer it to me, I’d take it. It’s something that has been talked about but I’m not in a position to say anything. I don’t really know what I’m going to do yet. … I’m focused on the # 20 Nationwide car right now and from there that is [team owner] Joe [Gibbs] and [team president] J.D.’s [Gibbs] deal.”(SceneDaily.com)(7-20-2008)

A one-ring circus?
Changes at once-stable Lowe’s Motor Speedway put operation on a high wire
A grand quirk in Charlotte’s professional sports history is that the one entity famous for putting on circuses and blowing up stuff – Lowe’s Motor Speedway – always has seemed far more stable and more capably managed than the town’s stick-and-ball sports teams. But over the past few months, some of that veneer has been stripped away.

Edwards Wins Gateway Race
It took three days for Carl Edwards to get to Gateway International Raceway from his home in Columbia, Mo. — on a bicycle. Once at the track, however, Edwards picked up his pace considerably for Saturday night’s Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 Nationwide Series race. In the final 55-lap green-flag run, Edwards’ No. 60 Ford streaked away from the No. 20 Toyota of Joey Logano, taking the checkered flag 6.877 seconds ahead of the 18-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing phenom. “That was unbelievable,” said Edwards, who picked up his second win of the season and the 15th of his career to the delight of a strong contingent of supporters in the grandstands. “It’s unreal. There won’t be a guy tomorrow who has a better day than me. Thank you everybody up in the grandstands. Thanks a lot. “The 20 car has been great this year. Racing with them has been a challenge, but a fun one.”
The No. 20 Camry has nine victories this season with four drivers behind the wheel. Logano accounted for one of the wins, at Kentucky. Jason Keller was third Saturday, posting his best finish since running second at Chicagoland in 2004. Jason Leffler was fourth, followed by Brad Keselowski, who recovered from a late-race accident to finish fifth. Rookie Landon Cassill ran sixth, a career best in the series.
Edwards was third for a restart on Lap 146 of the 200-lap race, chasing Leffler and seventh-place finisher James Buescher, both of whom had taken two tires under a caution caused by a wreck involving Keselowski and David Reutimann (watch video), who entered the race second and third, respectively, in the series standings. With four new tires, however, Edwards soon ran down the two cars, passing Leffler for the lead on Lap 152. From that point he pulled away. A pileup moments after a restart on Lap 116 wiped out a handful of strong cars and stopped the race for nearly 25 minutes. Scott Wimmer’s No. 29 Chevrolet spun into the Turn 2 wall after a tap from Cassill. The chain-reaction crash that followed also eliminated the cars of defending race winner Reed Sorenson, Mike Bliss and Steve Wallace.

Nationwide Series director Joe Balash said Friday at Gateway International Raceway that NASCAR is still pouring over data culled from dynomometer tests on 10 engines pulled from cars after last week’s race at Chicagoland Speedway. “That’s a lot of data to go through,” Balash said. “We’re disseminating the data to the teams right now, but as much information as we’ve gathered over 10 engines, it’s going to take us awhile to have our engineers go through and look at all the data before any decisions are made.” Balash wouldn’t say if NASCAR had found any patterns in the data and said the sanctioning body also needs to compare the latest data with dyno runs earlier this year after the Atlanta and Milwaukee races. Wind-tunnel testing on NASCAR’s car of tomorrow for the Nationwide Series is heading into its final stages, as two manufacturers have been certified aerodynamically, series director Joe Balash said Friday at Gateway International Raceway. The Dodge and Ford versions of the COT have met NASCAR’s wind-tunnel targets, while the Chevy and Toyota still have work to do. “We’re taking Chevy and Toyota back to the wind tunnel,” Balash said. “We still have a little more tweaking to do to hit the target numbers that we have out there.” Balash said NASCAR still hopes to introduce the new car in late 2009, but that could change, depending on what team owners in the series want. Many owners have indicated they would like the car to be rolled out in 2010.(SceneDaily.com)(7-19-2008)
Kenny gets a new crew chief: Dr. Jerry Punch reported during Nationwide qualifying on ESPN2, that Kenneth Campbell is now serving as #28-Kenny Wallace’s crew chief. He replaced Rick Gay.(7-19-2008)
Cassill to start for RMM in Indianapolis: During the qualifying broadcast on SPEED/TV, Ray Dunlap announced that Landon Cassill will be the driver of the #81-Randy Moss Motorsports Chevy for the Power Stroke Diesel 200 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on July 25th.(7-19-2008)
Austin Dillion to Nationwide? RaceTalkRadio.com has learned that Austin Dillon, Grandson of NASCAR owner Richard Childress, will be competing for rookie of the year in the Nationwide Series in 2009. Austin Dillon leads the points in the NASCAR Camping World Series Eastern division and drives the #3 car in that series. Dillon is expected to compete in several Nationwide Series races later this season.(RaceTalkRadio.com)(7-18-2008)

Post race quotes from Third place finisher, Jason Keller, collecting his best finish this season. “It was a good night for us; we started off extraordinarily bad. One thing we’ve been trying to do over the past few weeks is work on our racecar. I’ve tried to communicate what it was doing. It is so much fun racing when you can pass cars and be aggressive. I’m proud of the pit guys, because they gained me some positions. Our cars are getting better, pit stops getting better. To side with Landon a bit, you’ve got to get everything you can on these restarts, you have to get your momentum , or you will get passed. With the new package,-less horsepower- it is more crucial to keep your momentum.” On the lights going out-“We’ve raced short tracks with one light on each end, so, it wasn’t that big of a deal.”(mediacenter-GIR/thehotlap) (07-21-08)
Post race quotes from Landon Cassill, his best NNS career finish, and highest finishing rookie-“It was a lot of fun racing Jason(Keller). The regular Series guys work hard and everyone needs to know that. Everything was done in the pits tonight, I didn’t really do anything extraordinary tonight-other than wreck the 29; that was hard, on the restart-I was trying to stay tight on the #29 because the #40 was coming. I tried to keep momentum and stay on the gas-I hated for that to happen. Easy to say it was a racing deal, but he’s the one with the wrecked race car-I hate it for him. But, otherwise, the crew chief made great adjustments, and the pit crew performed great.” On the lights going out during the race-“they must have turned off as I was coming around Turn 4. I came around and said, “Whoa, something’s different here in Turn 1.”(mediacenter-GIR-thehotlap) (07-21-08)

JASON LEFFLER, No. 38 Great Clips Toyota Camry, Braun Racing Finished: 4th Did the call on your last pit stop help you to a top-five finish tonight? “Todd Lohse (crew chief) and the guys made a great call doing two tires at the end. He had that planned from the start and it worked out pretty good for us. Our car was pretty good. It’s a brand new car and we’ll take it to ORP (O’Reilly Raceway Park) and tune on it a little bit. All of the guys at Great Clips and Braun Racing did a great job. I appreciate it. I got a few of my crew members back this week and it’s paid dividends. These guys work great as a group and I’m just proud to be driving this thing.”(Toyota Racing) (07-20-08)
Post race quotes from JOEY LOGANO, Finished: 2nd Q-Did you feel like you had a race-winning car tonight? “We had a pretty good night. We made a lot of adjustments during the race and we could go from one end to the other. We could turn the center good but had no forward bite or be too tight in the center and have good forward bite. We couldn’t really get it right where we wanted to. It seemed like Carl Edwards got it right where he wanted to. That thing was really stout. The whole GameStop crew did great. We had good pit stops which was cool. We gained a lot of spots in the pits, but I lost a lot of spots in the pits with me driving. I learned a little bit there. We’ll just have to go] to the next track and work on it there.” Q-Was there ever a point at the end of the race where some clean air would’ve helped you to be closer to Carl Edwards? “I had clean air. I just couldn’t go anywhere. There were times when he (Carl Edwards) was way faster and there were times that I found a few things that could make me a little bit faster. My fast laps were still a tenth-and-a-half or two-tenths off of his fast lap. When you got it you got it and then they hit it dead on tonight. It was showing there pretty much the whole race. Ever since the beginning he was good and then he got better. It’s usually how these races go. Some guys run upfront at the beginning of the race and then everyone gets better and if you don’t pick up with them then you start going backwards. We were able to pickup with them, but it just wasn’t enough. My car wasn’t horrible. It was pretty good. I wouldn’t say it’s junk but Carl’s (Edwards) car was just remarkable.” At what point did you weren’t going to be able to pass Carl Edwards for the lead? “When he was driving away from me. At times I thought we had a really good car. I screwed up coming out of the pits and I tried passing and the car got free and lost a spot there. By the time we got back by all of those cars I was about 15 car lengths back or so and held it for a while and he (Carl Edwards) gradually started pulling away and before I knew it he had a straightaway. I kept digging and I never gave up at it but he had such a big lead even if I was a half-second quicker at the end I was never going to get there. My only hope was a caution and then something happening because even with a caution I don’t think we were fast enough to get by anybody. We were a second place car tonight and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re shooting for wins, but I guess it’s a good points night.” Was the racing on the track as tight as it looked? “There were times that it was tight and there were times that it opened up a lot. It seemed like in the beginning of the race there was five or six of us running pretty close to each other with pretty much the same times. It’s like I said earlier, it’s when you start making your pit stops and making your adjustments is when the cream usually rises to the top. Towards the end it opened up a lot. I couldn’t see the leader and I couldn’t see behind me anywhere so it opened up a ton. But in the restarts, like Jason (Keller) said, it gets big and you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get spots in the restarts because the momentum is a really big deal.” What happened when you lost time during your pit stops? “We had a good stop, a real good stop and was going to beat the 60 (Carl Edwards) out of the pits and I stalled it. That’s pretty much what happened. I tried not to spin them too much to get some fuller bite going and getting out in front of him and I just let off a little bit too early and the motor crapped out on me.”(Toyota Racing) (07-20-08)
Carl Edwards wins one at Gateway!!Tonight’s Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 got underway with a lot of potential storylines. Joey Logano’s return to the #20, McMurray, in the #17, with new crew chief Pierre Kuetell on the pole; and defending champion Sorenson, among the many noteworthy stories, not to mention the power outage right before the race affecting the tower and pit road lighting. Polesitter Jamie McMurray would lead for the first 22 laps, before a competition caution came out, allowing Morgan Sheperd in the #89 to assume the lead for three laps, before the #20 took over the top position.Logano had the lead with #40 Sorenson, #99 Reutimann, #60 Edwards and #88 Keselowski running behind in the top five. McMurray had fallen to sixth, #64 Stremme, #29 Wimmer,#2 Bowyer and #5 Cassill made up the top ten. On Lap 49, Reutimann passed Sorenson and Logano to take the lead. The second caution came out on Lap 62 as the #47 made contact with the #52. The leaders would come in to pit during this caution, everyone taking fresh tires. Edwards would win the race off pit road over the 20 by a nose. By Lap 70, Reutimann had once again passed Logano, this time to take second; Sorenson ran in fourth, Bowyer in fifth, Keselowski in sixth, Wimmer, McMurray, #38 Jason Leffler and #1 Mike Bliss making up the rest of the top-10. Green flag racing continued until the third yellow came out on lap 71 for lost lights in Turns 1 and 2. After consulting drivers, green flag racing continued within a few laps. Columbia, MS native Carl Edwards still led until Lap 96, when Reutimann passed Edwards for the top spot. The #27 of Brad Coleman tagged the wall with 90 to go, but the bigger incident would come 5 laps later, when many top contenders would get collected, as the #5 apparently tapped the #29, resulting in a melee involving Scott Wimmer, #66 of Steven Wallace, #99 of David Reutimann, #40 of Reed Sorenson, and the #1 of Mike Bliss. The red flag was brought out for almost 25 minutes during cleanup activities. (Read more) thehotlap (07-20-08)

Benson Wins Truck Race
Kyle Busch came up five spots short in his bid to make NASCAR history Saturday night and Johnny Benson took advantage, holding off Michael Annett to win the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. Busch was attempting to become the first driver to win a Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Truck Series racein successive starts. He won the Nationwide Series’ Dollar General 300 on July 11 and the Sprint Cup’s LifeLock.com 400 the following night. Matt Crafton finished third ahead of Dennis Setzer and David Starr. Rounding out the top ten were Kyle Busch, Mike Skinner, Terry Cook, rookie Marc Mitchell and Ron Hornaday.
The early portion of the race featured a number of yellow flags, and nine of the first 24 laps were run under caution. There were eight cautions overall, slowing drivers for a total of 36 laps. There was also a 10-minute, 34-second stoppage for track repairs following a red flag. Benson grabbed the lead in the Truck Series points race by one over third-place finisher Matt Crafton. Previous points leader Ron Hornaday finished 10th, dropping him to third in the standings.
The race did boast a historical milestone for Roush Racing, which eclipsed Spears Motorsports to become the team with the most starts in the Truck Series. The race also marked the debut for NFL wide receiver Randy Moss as a truck owner. Willie Allen drove the No. 81 Rascal Flatts Chevrolet under the newly formed Randy Moss Motorsports team and finished 15th. (NASCAR.com)

BENSON BARRELS TO FIRST NCTS KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY VICTORY
SPARTA, Ky. – NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series veteran Johnny Benson won the a four-wide battle for the lead in Turn 3 over teammate Michael Annett and his No. 22 Bill Davis Racing truck and motored on to secure a Kentucky Speedway victory tonight in the “Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers.”
Benson took his first career win at the track after guiding his No. 23 machine to the low line on Lap 119, weaving his way through a three-truck maze that included the second-place Annett, holing point for closing 32-lap segment and earning the third-closest NCTS victory in track history by 0.474 of a second.
“The truck ran good, but it wasn’t easy. It may have looked easy, but it was a little slick out there. We got a tremendous run off Turn 2 and got alongside the No. 18 and I thought I was in pretty good shape.
“Then, we both had a run on the No. 22. It was going to a 50-50 shot whether he was going to get off the gas or turn left. He turned left and I followed him,” Benson said of the pass that eventually secured him the win.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., driver registered his second win of the season and second in his past three series starts. His seventh top-five and ninth top-10 finish of the season boosts him three spots in the series standings to first. He will enter the series July 25 race in Indianapolis with a one-point lead in the series championship standings over tonight’s third-place driver, Matt Crafton.
Annett netted his first top-five and second top-10 finish of the season in only his third start. He jumped from seventh to second during the decisive four-wide battle in Turn 3.
“Johnny got a great run on the inside of us. I just kept following his line and learned more in 20 laps behind him than I did in two days of practice here. The truck took off and we were able to bring it home second,” Annett said.
Crafton reeled off his third straight top-five finish of the season and owns two top-five and five top-10 finishes through five career series starts at the track.
“I love coming here. I thought we had the best truck tonight. When we were in dirty air, we could pass him (Benson) and get away. I think if we had gotten the lead we would’ve won this race. This was great. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing for the rest of the year, getting top fives and wins, and hopefully we’ll be the best in the end,” he said.
Dennis Setzer, the 2005 Kentucky NCTS champ, finished fourth and registered his fifth top-five series finish at the track in his ninth career start. He moved to 10th in the series standings.
David Starr rounded out the race top-five in his No. 11 Red Horse Racing truck. He moved from 12th to 11th in the series standings with his fourth top-five and sixth top-10 finish of the season. He delivered his second top-five and fifth top-10 NCTS finish at Kentucky Speedway in his seventh career start.
Ron Hornaday, Jr., the 2006 “Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers” winner who entered tonight’s race with the lead in the series standings and a 27-point advantage over Crafton, earned his ninth top-10 finish of the season with his second straight 10th-place series showing in Kentucky. He slipped to third in the series standings, but trails the new leader by just five points.
Current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series leader Kyle Busch, a former NASCAR Nationwide Series and ARCA RE/MAX Series winner at the track, placed sixth in his first NCTS race on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.
Tonight’s official attendance was 31,308.
The 2008 Kentucky Speedway season finale will feature amazing, high-speed Firestone Indy Lights and IndyCar Series action Aug. 8-9. Benson Best In Bluegrass Battle
07-19-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Benson Best In Bluegrass Battle Johnny Benson dominated Saturday night’s Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway, winning his second NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race of the year and 11th of his career, cruising to an easy victory in event No. 13 of 25 on the NCTS schedule. Finishing second behind Benson was his Bill Davis Racing teammate, youngster Michael Annett, in just his third NCTS start of the season. Then it was Matt Crafton, Dennis Setzer and David Starr rounding out the top five. Second-qualifier Kyle Busch took the lead on the opening lap in his No. 51 Miccosukee Resorts Toyota Tundra, ahead of the Toyota Tundra-sponsored No. 5 of Mike Skinner, Skinner’s teammate Benson in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra, and points leader Ron Hornaday Jr. in the Camping World No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado. Shelby Howard spun on Lap 4, bringing out the first caution of the race. Under yellow, Jack Sprague pitted with engine problems in his American Commercial Lines Chevy. He had to pit again for a missing hood pin, which dropped him to the end of the field and he would never be a factor in the outcome of the race.
