Stock Car Gazette, Thursday, July 17, 2008

Yesterday was an interesting day. What, you say nothing much happened? Sure it did.

I killed the website yesterday while trying to upgrade the software to WordPress 2.6.

I was pretty sure I knew what to do to fix it, but I did not have any access from work to the files on the website I would need to change. So the site set there all day yesterday… dead. I was able to fix it last night before mid-week church, thankfully.

SO, we’re back in business. Here’s the latest from the world of NASCAR stock car racing, right here in today’s Stock Car Gazette.

Stewart May Have Left Because of Busch
snipurl.com/300ph-gazete
Joe Gibbs Racing wanted Tony Stewart to stick around. When it became apparent he wanted to leave to pursue ownership with a different team, they agreed to let him go. “It was brought to a head between Tony and us and I think the farther we went with it and the more we talked about it, we just reached the conclusion it would probably be best under these circumstances to go ahead and let Tony pursue another option here and let him get started and let us get started” in a different direction, Joe Gibbs said. “The ideal situation is Tony drives for JGR, redoes the deal and retires here and we start a fourth car down the road,” J.D. Gibbs said. “That was our hope. … It is discouraging for us. We hoped for him to finish out his career here. … It just didn’t work out that way and we understand.” Now Gibbs Racing moves on and it appears 18-year-old potential star Joey Logano might move on to the No. 20 car next season. Still, Stewart sincerely believes that he and his yet-to-be-named second driver at Stewart-Haas (it’ll likely be Ryan Newman) will be successful next season. “I feel like we have the variables to be competitive right away,” Stewart says. “We know it’s a rebuilding process and there will be an adjustment period. How long will the adjustment period take? We don’t know. As long as we’re making forward progress, I think you have to take it a week at a time … I can’t guarantee I’m [going to succeed], but if we don’t, we’re going to go down swinging.”

GM cuts could hit all levels of racing: UPDATE: Nothing at GM is off-limits-including its high-profile NASCAR program - company executives warned as the automaker went public Tuesday in Detroit with its latest round of cost-cutting measures. With the auto industry in North America taking a beating, GM racing director Mark Kent said that every level of motorsports that GM supports-from the giant stock-car racing series NASCAR to the grassroots Sports Car Club of America-is being evaluated. GM also competes in the NHRA, USAC midgets/sprints and the American Le Mans Series. “Racing is not exempt (from cuts),” Kent said last week. “We are looking at ways to be even more efficient … looking to see if they are genuinely positioned for a positive return on investment.” Troy Clarke, president of GM North America, added: Motorsports “have not gone without scrutiny. I’m not going to get into specifics about NASCAR. But there will be modifications-changes in our marketing footprint-in this area.” GM’s NASCAR program, which has enjoyed great success and supports 12 Chevy teams, is under review, as is all of the racing GM supports, Kent said. “NASCAR, SCCA club racing-we are looking at where we need to be.” Funding a championship-winning team such as Chevy’s Hendrick Motorsports and drivers of the caliber of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. costs GM at least $30 million a year.(The Oylmpian)(7-16-2008)
UPDATE: Troubled General Motors has notified two racetracks that run NASCAR events that their current contracts will not be renewed as part of an overall $10 billion cost-cutting program. That seems to be just the first step in what could be a huge drop in support by GM, Ford and Chrysler for tracks and teams in NASCAR’s top three professional divisions, the NHRA and other racing series in the face of the weakest U.S. auto sales in a decade. Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns eight tracks that hold NASCAR events, already has been told GM will not renew contracts at two tracks - New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway. GM has contracts with 12 of the 22 tracks where NASCAR’s top Sprint Cup series races and is the title sponsor for the fall race at Richmond International Raceway. GM also is the official vehicle provider for Daytona International Speedway, owned by International Speedway Corp., and a track spokesman said they have not been notified of any impending change.(Associated Press/CNNMoney.com)
AND: Richmond International Raceway is not one of the two tracks [having contracts not renewed]. GM is the title sponsor for the fall NASCAR Sprint Cup race at RIR — The Chevy Rock and Roll 400. Aimee Turner, spokeswoman for RIR, said Wednesday that Chevy’s partnership with the track runs through 2010. That deal includes not only naming rights for the September race, but also Chevy’s status as the official vehicle of the track.(Richmond Times Dispatch)(7-17-2008)

AT&T Proudly Showcases Team USA athletes on # 31 AT&T Car: The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing are fast approaching and Team USA swimmer Michael Phelps, 23, is in rare form. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb., Phelps set two world records (200 individual medley, 400 individual medley) and one U.S. Open record (200 freestyle), ultimately qualifying to compete in eight events in Beijing (5 individual and 3 relays). To drive excitement and show support for Team USA, AT&T recently announced a new paint scheme for Richard Childress Racing´s (RCR) #31 AT&T Chevy, driven by Jeff Burton. Featured on the car is an image of Phelps along with Nastia Liukin, a rising star in her own right from Team USA´s gymnastics squad. The custom paint scheme will run during the Pennsylvania 500 on Aug. 3 at Pocono Raceway.(AT&T Racing PR) see images of the scheme on my #31 Team Schemes page.(7-17-2008) www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/31cup.htm

Wednesday’s route was scheduled to begin in Lexington, KY and run to White Sulphur Springs, WV. Kenseth Wins Fourth Miller Lite Nationals Title at Slinger Speedway: Matt Kenseth wasn’t completely sure how he won the 29th Miller Lite Slinger Nationals. Runner-up Jeremy Lepak credited Kenseth’s experience at Slinger Speedway. Third-place Dennis Prunty thought a stronger engine played a big role. But why didn’t really matter, so much. As the fireworks exploded over Slinger Speedway on a sticky Tuesday night, Kenseth was crowned the newest four-time champion of the prestigious late-model event.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(7-16-2008)

SK Telecom in Talks to Acquire Sprint: K Telecom, the largest provider of wireless phone service in South Korea, is in talks to acquire Sprint Nextel, the troubled U.S. wireless carrier, according to people familiar with the talks. SK Telecom, which is smaller than Sprint, would be joined in any deal by private equity firms that would contribute cash towards the purchase, sources told CNBC. A deal is not imminent and while the talks are on-going, participants caution that any agreement would at best be weeks away. The board of Sprint, which has been struggling with significant subscriber losses, is divided about whether to sell the company as some of them hold a belief that a turnaround for the company may not be far off, according to people briefed on its position. Any deal with SK Telecom would have to be friendly. The Koreans have no plans to pursue Sprint should it not wish to be acquired. The talks have not reached a crucial phase, and specific negotiation on price has yet to take place, but they have heated up in recent days.(CNBC.com), , No word on how or if this would effect the Sprint Cup sponsorship.(7-16-2008)

“DALE JR. - SHIFTING GEARS” RETURNS TO ESPN WITH TWO MORE EPISODES
Documentary on NASCAR star set to air July 22 and July 25 at 7 p.m. ET

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Dale Jr.–Shifting Gears, the sports documentary chronicling NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr., and his unprecedented move to Hendrick Motorsports, will return to ESPN for the final two episodes on Tues., July 22 and Fri., July 25 at 7 p.m. ET, respectively.

The new episodes, each one hour in length, are the fourth and fifth installments of a five-part series. The original airings will be simulcast on ESPN MobileTV. The first of the two new episodes re-airs Thursday, July 24, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, and again Sunday, July 27, at 2 a.m. on ESPN2. The final episode re-airs Sunday, July 27, at 3 a.m. on ESPN2.

The debut of the new episode on July 22 will feature, among other things, reaction to the emotional conclusion of the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway. It will segue into the July 25 finale, which captures exclusive commentary by Earnhardt Jr. on his popular Father’s Day victory at Michigan International Speedway.

In the final two episodes, Shifting Gears looks deep into Earnhardt Jr.’s relationship with his cousin and crew chief Tony Eury Jr., while documenting the balance between an extremely rigorous work schedule and life away from the chaotic NASCAR circuit. The new episodes feature moments both surreal and hilarious, including the bulldozing of Earnhardt Jr.’s house, kart-racing with friends, and the camaraderie shared with teammates at a National Guard training base.

Shifting Gears debuted in February with three episodes that featured a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective of Earnhardt Jr.’s decision to leave family-owned Dale Earnhardt Inc., to drive for Hendrick Motorsports. To show the personal, corporate and competitive ramifications involved in his decision, Earnhardt Jr. allowed access to team meetings, commercial productions, and the odds-and-ends responsibilities that come with changing jobs. Shifting Gears also captured never-before-seen footage at the race track, including his season-opening win in the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona.

Carl Edwards doesn’t handle down time well. So this open week on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule affords the always-active Edwards time to fit in activities he normally wouldn’t.Ahead of Saturday night’s race at Gateway, he plans on riding his bike along the Katy Trail from his hometown in Columbia, Mo., to St. Louis, the headquarters for his car sponsor, Save-A-Lot. Edwards is scheduled to finish off the estimated 190-mile, five-day trek at the Madison, Ill.-based track where he’ll begin preparations for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250. He’ll be joined by his trainer, his motor coach driver Tom Giacchi and a few hometown friends on the ride that, according to Edwards, “Is organic. It doesn’t have an itinerary.”(NASCAR) (07-16-08)

St. Louis natives Mike (No. 7 GEICO Toyota) and Kenny (No. 28 U.S. Border Patrol Chevrolet) Wallace will race at Gateway, their home track, along with nephew Steve (No. 66 Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches Chevrolet), who still has plenty of ties although born and raised in North Carolina.Mike Wallace, eighth in the standings, has had the best result among the family at the track with a runner-up finish in 2006.“Every year I get myself too worked up about this race,” Kenny Wallace said. “There’s nothing more in my racing career I want to do than win at Gateway.”In addition to the regional proximity for Landon Cassill, Carl Edwards (No. 60 Save-A-Lot Ford), the 2006 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion and a winner at Gateway that year, is from Columbia, Mo. His Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Jamie McMurray (No. 17 CitiFinancial Ford) is from Joplin, Mo., and will race at Gateway for only the second time, and the first since 2002.After the race, McMurray will travel to Los Angeles for an appearance on the 2008 ESPY Awards Sunday night on ESPN (9 p.m. ET). His .005-second win over Kyle Busch last July at Daytona was nominated for “Best Finish.” (NASCAR) (07-16-08)

Premier Racing will display the LLS logo on its truck. “We decided weeks ago that we would like to use our truck at Kentucky to help promote a worthy cause, and LLS is one that is helping to save lives everyday,” commented Premier team owner Philip Hudgins. Hudgins went on to say, “Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Being a father and grandparent, I could not think of a more worthwhile cause to support.” The team will be competing in its second race of the season and is very confident they can put on a good show for the fans.(Premier Racing PR)(7-16-2008)

The sale of Montgomery Motor Speedway might be in trouble. A group of approximately 25 to 30 homeowners, all of whom own property located near MMS, have hired an attorney and plan to argue against potential new owner Rick Crawford being issued a license that would allow him to hold racing events at the track. Should they be successful in blocking the issuance of the license, it would kill the sale of MMS. “In simple terms, my clients don’t want the racetrack operational again,” said Montgomery attorney Doyle Fuller, who is representing the group of homeowners. “There are a number of problems. There are literally hundreds of people negatively affected if this license is granted.” Crawford, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver, said there are solutions to most of the problems and that he would be willing to work with the homeowners. Crawford said if the city failed to issue a license to him on Thursday, he was moving on. “This is my dream — to own a track like this and do something good for a community,” he said. “If this passes, Montgomery will be proud of this track. We’ll do it right and it will be something that could help revive a part of town that really needs it. “But I’m not going to fight. There’s some other place out there that wants what I’m offering. I’m a good neighbor. I do things right. I hope that’s good enough for Montgomery.”(Montgomery Advisor)(7-16-2008)

BUSCH CHASES NASCAR HISTORY IN KENTUCKY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kyle Busch stands a victory away from making NASCAR history as the first driver to win a race in all three of the organization’s national series in successive starts.

Busch, a two-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series winner in 2008, hopes to add Saturday’s Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway to last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup/Nationwide Series sweep at Chicagoland Speedway.

Busch already is a member of a select group of drivers who have won in all three national series in the same season, posting a victory each year from 2005-08. Terry Labonte (1995) and Kevin Harvick (2003) also pulled off that triple.

The opportunity is just the latest milestone in what any NASCAR driver would consider a milestone season: The Sprint Cup Series championship lead on the strength of seven victories; five Nationwide Series wins and top-five point ranking; and truck wins back-to-back at Auto Club Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway.

While Busch has never competed in a truck race at Kentucky, the 23-year-old competitor was the track’s Nationwide Series winner on June 19, 2004. An accident while running second sidelined him from last month’s “Meijer 300 Presented by Oreo” in which he led a race-high 85 laps at the Sparta, Ky. facility. A victory also would make Busch the first three-series winner in Kentucky Speedway history. He charted an ARCA RE/MAX Series win in his track debut on May 10, 2003.

Busch, who drives the Miccosukee Resorts/NOS Energy Drink Toyota for Billy Ballew Motorsports, most recently competed in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on June 14. He finished seventh at Michigan International Speedway.

To Busch, the record is secondary to pushing Ballew back into contention for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owners’ championship. Ballew ranked second after the Michigan round but has fallen to fifth, 63 points behind leader DeLana Harvick whose driver, Ron Hornaday Jr., also leads the standings heading into the season’s 13th race.

“I want to keep Billy up front and no one else can do it,” said Busch. “I think it’s cool that as long as he’s been in the sport, he’s finally got a chance to win a championship and I want to help him keep that alive.”

The Nascar Insiders
Partial Seasons for Development Drivers Aren’t the Answer
We’ve seen a trend developing over the last few years in terms of driver development in NASCAR that, I believe, has probably hurt the careers of many young drivers. It’s this idea that a driver can run a partial season, maybe as few as five to eight races, and actually learn enough to aid in their development. My partner Journo wrote a post a while back and discussed teams rushing young drivers through the system.
