Stock Car Gazette, Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Hopefully you survived your post-holiday Monday.

For you “Top Gear” fans, the new season starts next Monday, July 14, at 8:00 PM eastern time on the BBC America channel (135 for you Dish Network subscribers). The segment of last night’s episode where the Hamster blows up the Gee Whiz is one of my favorites, with the Bluebird space shuttle and camper racing ranking up there, too.

For now, here’s the lastest stock car racing news from NASCAR in today’s Stock Car Gazette.

Report: Teresa Earnhardt looking to sell DEI
Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway is reporting today that Teresa Earnhardt has enlisted the services of Bear, Stearns and Company to find a buyer — or at least a major financial investor — for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Bear Stearns is an investment bank, securities trading and brokerage firm based in New York City, and has been [...]

NASCAR team count may dwindle
The impact of the sluggish U.S. economy appears to be hitting NASCAR directly. Only 45 teams attempted to qualify for last night’s Coke Zero 400, and that has some here worried about how many teams might be lining up to run for next February’s Daytona 500. Robby Gordon has been struggling with sponsorship issues, and things [...]

Mears or Stremme to the No 12
It appears to be a two-man race for Ryan Newman’s soon-to-be-vacant seat at Penske Racing, with Casey Mears and David Stremme in the running. Stremme is making a strong bid for the ride, doing yeoman work as Penske Racing’s test driver this season. In fact, Stremme’s name is being linked with as many as three different [...]

Newman and Jack Daniels will join Stewart at new team
Tony Stewart is expected to announce a 2009 move to Haas-CNC Racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in three weeks. Reliable sources tell Sirius Speedway that Stewart will also announce sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice as part of a new, multi-year package with Haas CNC, and that Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman will join him [...]

Road to seven titles, 200 wins began at extinct track
Petty’s first race was a sixth at Columbia (S.C.) Speedway

http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/features/07/04/rpetty.birth.of.king.dcaraviello/index.html

He wasn’t the King, but a tall, lanky kid who had never made a competitive lap around a racetrack. He wore not leather cowboy boots, but chopped-off Wellingtons that stopped just above the ankle. If he wore sunglasses, it was just to keep the dirt out of his eyes. If he sported a hat, it was a simple ball cap, and not the cowboy variety with ostrich feathers adorning the front. He raced with a shop rag dipped half in water, sucking on the moist end to keep the mud out of his mouth. He drove a convertible, a Grand National car with the roof cut off, on a nasty half-mile track that’s long since been beaten down by progress and underbrush. He qualified 13th and finished sixth, five laps behind winner Bob Wellborn. He picked up a check for $200, loaded the racecar onto an open trailer hitched to a three-quarter-ton pickup, and began the journey home. And somewhere in the darkness of U.S. Highway 1, just outside of Rockingham, N.C., he turned to his good friend Dale Inman and uttered eight words that would alter the course of motorsports history. “I think,” Richard Petty said, “I’m going to like this driving.”

Mark and Matt Martin each shift racing futures

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-smith0508jul05,0,171219.column

Matt Martin’s racing career appeared to be on track: He had his own Web site, his own fan club, worked out of a 7,500 square-foot shop, and went to the races in a diesel truck that slept six and pulled a 40-foot trailer to area tracks like Orlando Speed World and New Smyrna Speedway from the home base just outside Daytona Beach. With Gatorade as a sponsor, he had been profiled on multiple TV networks and in the New York Times, and his picture had been on 20 million cereal boxes. That was in 2002 when Matt, son of NASCAR driver Mark Martin, was 10. At the time, Matt had it all figured out: “When I’m 12, I’ll start racing Legends cars, When I’m 16, I’ll be racing in Hooters Cup. When I’m 18, I’ll be in NASCAR, in the Craftsman truck or Busch Series. And when I’m 21, I’ll be in Winston Cup.”

Review: NASCAR 09 (360)

Let me start out by possibly destroying all credibility I have in writing this review: I am NOT a fan of NASCAR. I am a huge sports fan, and an avid watcher of SportsCenter, so my knowledge of the sport is limited to what I happen to …

DEI For Sale?
Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway is reporting today that Teresa Earnhardt has enlisted the services of Bear, Stearns and Company to find a buyer — or at least a major financial investor — for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Bear Stearns is an investment bank, securities trading and brokerage firm based in New York City, and has been charged with finding a buyer for the entire operation. Barring that, Earnhardt is said to be interested in selling at least a minority interest in the team. DEI President of Global Operations Max Siegel declined to comment on the story when contacted earlier today.

Chicago Rookie Notes
Patrick Carpentier was the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race in the July 5 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Carpentier scored a 14th-place finish, his best in 18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, and took Raybestos® Rookie of the Race honors for the first time this season.
For the second consecutive race, TWO Raybestos® Rookies qualified in the top-10. Regan Smith started eighth in the Coke Zero 400 while Carpentier grabbed the 10th-place starting position. Carpentier won the pole for the June 29 LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (race No. 17) while Dario Franchitti claimed the seventh-place starting position.
Regan Smith leads Sam Hornish Jr. by three points (167-164) in the Raybestos® Rookie standings entering the July 12 LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland (Joliet, Ill.) Speedway.
Juan Pablo Montoya was the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race in the 2007 LifeLock.com 400, scoring a 15th-place finish.
Kevin Harvick is the only Raybestos® Rookie to win in seven Sprint Cup races at Chicagoland. He won the 2001 LifeLock.com 400 by .649 seconds over Robert Pressley. He is also the only Raybestos® Rookie to lead the most laps in a race at Chicagoland, leading the 2001 event five times for 113 laps.

Jeff Hammond Featured on ESPN2’s Driven to Hunt Sunday
Former NASCAR crew chief Jeff Hammond will be featured on an episode of the ESPN2 series Driven to Hunt on Sunday, July 13, at 7 a.m. ET. — The program repeats at 9:30 a.m. Hammond heads to the mountains of New Mexico for a Rocky Mountain Elk hunt. The third day finds him in a stalk of his life for a once-in-a-lifetime bull. Each week, Driven to Hunt will invite a prominent NASCAR personality on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt. From drivers to team owners to the over-the-wall gang, hunting is what they dream about. Guests this season include drivers Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Terry and Bobby Labonte and Kerry Earnhardt, and NASCAR team owner Richard Childress.

Another NASCAR Mistake
For the second time in recent weeks, NASCAR officials admitted to lining up drivers in the wrong order on a final restart. In Friday night’s Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards was lined up fourth for the green-white-checkered restart that followed a late-race accident. Then NASCAR officials ordered him to forfeit a position to Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer prior to the green flag. The team was arguing the call when the Winn-Dixie 250 was restarted. With chaos and confusion already surrounding the team, Edwards tried to block Mike Bliss on that restart, got into the side of him and slid off the track for a final finish of 11th. “It was just a mistake on NASCAR’s part,” Edwards said shortly after the race. “Hopefully they will apologize for it, but I’m supposed to be in front of Clint on the restart … I’m just very frustrated with all the technology we have, just because I went out in the grass to avoid the wreck, I was always at least 50, 100 feet in front of Clint and they couldn’t figure out that I was supposed to be in front of him. I’m just very, very frustrated about that.”

Teresa Earnhardt Looking to sell DEI? UPDATE: Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway is reporting today that Teresa Earnhardt has enlisted the services of Bear, Stearns and Company to find a buyer — or at least a major financial investor — for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Bear Stearns is an investment bank, securities trading and brokerage firm based in New York City, and has been charged with finding a buyer for the entire operation. Barring that, Earnhardt is said to be interested in selling at least a minority interest in the team. DEI President of Global Operations Max Siegel declined to comment on the story when contacted earlier today.(Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway)(7-7-2008)
UPDATE: Max Siegel, President of Global Operations at DEI is currently in negotiations with major investors to buy Teresa Earnhardt out of DEI, a source close to the negotiations said Monday. It appears now that Teresa is finally willing to sell, and Siegel is working diligently with a number of potential investors to take the company over. Sources said Siegel would not just be buying a portion of DEI or a controlling interest, rather, he would be buying the entire company. Sources said, Teresa has agreed to walk away from the company entirely for the right price. That price is supposedly somewhere between $115-$130 million dollars. With one exception…Teresa would retain the rights to all “Dale Earnhardt’ and ‘Intimidator’ rights and merchandise sales. Siegel would only be buying the DEI race teams, and real estate including all race shops and the DEI headquarters in Mooresville, NC. Sources said Siegel is very serious about the purchase and appears to have investors salivating over the opportunity to own the legendary team. In addition, Teresa has grown more frustrated with NASCAR nation following her fall-out with the sports most popular driver, and wants nothing more than to be out of the public eye for good.(Captain Thunder Racing)(7-8-2008)

Most Wins after 18 races: interesting stat…..since 1980, only three driver have won six or more races in the first 18 races of the season: Darrell Waltrip had 6 in 1981 ended up with 12 wins; Dale Earnhardt had 7 in 1987 and finished with 11 and Kyle Busch has 6 in 2008 after 18 races. Both Earnhardt and Waltrip won the Cup championship in those season. Neither had to run the Chase.(ESPN’s NASCAR Now)(7-8-2008)

Shootout to get new name? There’s a chance the annual running of the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway could play the name game. The non-points race has been the season starter for NASCAR’s premiere series since 1979 when it was known as the Busch Clash. Sources tell News 13 that routine negotiations are underway for naming rights to the 2009 race, and it’s not yet certain that Budweiser will return as title sponsor.(News 13), well….Coor’s Light took over as the official beer of NASCAR and the Bud Pole Award is now sponsored by Coor’s Light and called the Coor’s Light Pole Award. It could end up the Coor’s Light Shootout, but when the sponsorship was announced last season it was mentioned that NASCAR’s agreement with Coors does not include the Bud Shootout race, which is a separate entitlement with Daytona Interntional Speedway. See more about the race and pole award on my 2009 Shootout Page.(7-8-2008) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2009/bud2009.htm

Truex to re-sign with DEI? Mark Martin’s new deal with Hendrick Motorsports will make it much easier for DEI to re-sign #1-Martin Truex Jr. Early Sunday morning, sources close to Truex Jr. said Martin’s release from the team at the end of the 2009 season would free up more than $8 million dollars. That money now appears to be spearheaded for Truex Jr. DEI has said they have an option on Truex Jr for 2009, an option that Truex Jr has discounted. Mark Martin was being paid more than $8 million dollars to drive part-time according to sources within the DEI organization. Now that Martin has agreed to terms with Hendrick Motorsports to drive the #5 car full-time next season and part-time in 2010, this money has become available for Truex Jr. Sources said DEI and Truex Jr. are closer than ever to announcing a contract extension that would lock in the New Jersey native through 2012 in the #1 car.(Captain Thunder Racing)(7-8-2008)

Johnson speaking in Washington DC: #48-Jimmie Johnson will be speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, July 8. The reigning Sprint Cup Series Champion will discuss his life experiences as a leading NASCAR driver and influential philanthropist.(GMR Marketing/Lowe’s Racing PR)(7-8-2008)

FreeCreditReport.com to sponsor the #28 also: FreeCreditReport.com will sponsor both Yates Racing cars at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend. #28-Travis Kvapil will sport the FreeCreditReport.com colors at Chicago as he did at #38-David Gilliland has had FreeCreditReport.com as his sponsor most of the season.(Yates Racing PR), see images of the scheme on my #28 Team Schemes page and the #38 Team Schemes page.(7-8-2008)

http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/38cup.htm

Hard Rock to sponsor a DEI car? DEI is also working diligently to lock up sponsors for next season. Rumors have been swirling that they may lose their U.S. Army sponsorship on Martin’s #8 car, a car that will be driven by rookie Aric Almirola next year, to Red Bull and Scott Speed. If that happens, DEI hopes to be ready with another sponsor to step in. That sponsor may be the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s. Sources said early Sunday that Max Siegel, President of Global Operations for DEI, had met throughout the weekend in Daytona Beach, FL with representatives from the Hard Rock about possible sponsorship opportunities with DEI. They could replace the U.S. Army should they bail and head to Red Bull, or they could end up on the #01 of Regan Smith.(Captain Thunder Racing)(7-8-2008)

Sirius Speedway has learned that UPS will move from Michael Waltrip Racing’s #44 Toyota to the quarterpanels of Clint Bowyer’s #07 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in 2009, leaving Jack Daniels in search of a new driver. That driver will be Ruan Newman, who is set to sign-on with Stewart at Haas CNC.(Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway)(7-7-2008)

Tony Stewart is expected to announce a 2009 move to Haas-CNC Racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in three weeks. Reliable sources tell Sirius Speedway that Stewart will also announce sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice as part of a new, multi-year package with Haas CNC, and that Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman will join him as a teammate, with sponsorship from Jack Daniels. That surprise move comes as the result of an enviable situation at Richard Childress Racing, which now has five potential sponsors for next season, and only four teams. Sirius Speedway has learned that UPS will move from Michael Waltrip Racing’s #44 Toyota to the quarterpanels of Clint Bowyer’s #07 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in 2009, leaving Jack Daniels in search of a new driver. That driver will be Newman, who is set to sign-on with Stewart at Haas CNC.(Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway)(7-7-2008

Mears or Stremme to the #12? It appears to be a two-man race for Ryan Newman’s soon-to-be-vacant [#12] seat at Penske Racing, with Casey Mears and David Stremme in the running. Yes, He REALLY Said That
John Andretti, on differences between NASCAR and IndyCar. “When NASCAR guys talk about aero push, they have no idea what aero push is. Going 180 mph around Iowa and getting behind somebody and you pick up a push and you’re heading for that wall at 180, that’s an aero push that will take your breath. And it just doesn’t cost you the position sometimes, but it scares the heck out of you, too.”

The NASCAR Nationwide Series helps Chicagoland make history Friday with the first night race in the eight-year history of the track. When the 2008 schedule was unveiled, Chicagoland revealed its plans for night racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. Both races moved up one day from their previous Saturday—Sunday day slots that had been on the calendar since 2001. Race history shows a strong chance for a first-time series winner. Four drivers have collected their first win in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Chicagoland, including two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson who won the first race at the 1.5-mile track in 2001.It was the second of Johnson’s two full-time seasons in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the victory remains his lone win in series competition in 88 races.Other first-time series winners at Chicagoland include Johnny Sauter (2002), Justin Labonte (2004) and Casey Mears (2006). (NASCAR) (07-07-08)

He’s still searching for his own home win at Nashville, but Bobby Hamilton Jr. (No. 25 Smithfield Ford) has already provided his team with a hometown victory.Hamilton’s Team Rensi Motorsports co-owners, Ed Rensi and Gary Weisbaum are Windy City natives, and Hamilton produced a win for the tandem at Chicago in 2003.Rensi, the former President & CEO of McDonalds, resides in Downers Grove Ill. Weisbaum, a graduate of Northern Illinois University, formed a marketing agency in Vernon Hills, Ill., before becoming involved in motorsports in 1992. He joined Rensi in 1999 to form one of the longest-standing series-only owner relationships.Other Illinois natives in the NASCAR Nationwide Series garage include: Matt Swiderski (Chicago) – No. 2 Chevrolet engineer; Ramie Jones (Olney) – No. 32 Toyota engineer; Bill Cole (Milan) – No. 88 Chevrolet transporter driver; Joey Forgette (Springfield) – No. 11 Chevrolet front-tire changer; Lee Bob Cunningham (Forreston) – No. 99 Toyota mechanic / eighth man (NASCAR) (07-07-08)

Mark Martin ~ Back in the Saddle Again

The Nascar Insiders
The Truth about the Ganassi Shut Down
In the days since the shut down of the #40 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team a lot has been written about the cause, and the potential for the future. The message board rumors have ranged from Ganassi closing at the end of the season to Target turning the team’s facility into a warehouse. Even journalists have gotten in on the act suggesting more cuts are coming and blaming the layoffs solely on the economy. Whatever the case, I want to provide some analysis and insight of the situation.
