NASCAR to clip Toyota’s wings?
NASCAR may be ready to slap Toyota with an engine-horsepower penalty on the Nationwide tour after yet another win by the Joe Gibbs team Friday night. It was Dave Rogers’ ninth tour win as crew chief, this time for Denny Hamlin, in a one-two finish with teammate Kyle Busch. It was Gibbs’ 12th Nationwide [...]

UPS may sponsor the No 07 in 2009
Among the hot but unconfirmed rumors making the rounds in the Sprint Cup garage this week are that Richard Childress Racing will land UPS as a sponsor for Clint Bowyer’s #07 Chevrolet. Multiple sources indicated that Bowyer’s car was the favorite to take the sponsorship over from Michael Waltrip Racing and David Reutimann. One source close [...]

Office Depot Will Back Stewart
Tony Stewart has a few obstacles left before he officially can become a Sprint Cup team owner, but sponsorship isn’t one of them. The two-time Cup champion has reached an agreement that would make Office Depot a primary sponsor on his car if he finalizes a deal with Haas CNC Racing, a source close to the negotiations said on Thursday. Sources said an announcement could be made as early as the weekend of the July 27 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is located about an hour from Stewart’s hometown of Columbus. But before anything can happen Stewart would have to be released from the final year of his contact with Joe Gibbs Racing. JGR president J.D. Gibbs said on Friday at Daytona International Speedway that he remained in negotiations to extend Stewart’s deal past 2009. Gibbs went so far as to say the organization could expand to four teams next season to make room for 18-year-old phenom Joey Logano.

France: On The State Of NASCAR
NASCAR Chairman Brian France says that he thinks competition is improving as drivers and teams continue to adapt to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series new car. In a wide-ranging interview covering the state of NASCAR Friday, France spoke about the strength of competition and impact of the economy on the sport as well as the series’ research into a potentially altered substance-abuse policy, manufacturer involvement and franchising. France said that he recognizes there has been much debate concerning the status of competition with NASCAR’s new car, which debuted in 16 races last season and is appearing at some race tracks for the first time this year. Drivers opened the season with fairly vocal criticism of the model as they struggled to complete passes in it, a litany that resulted in a closed-door meeting in which many drivers say they were told to temper those remarks and give the car some time. Since then, the series has enjoyed some strong racing moments as well as some runaway runs by leaders. Teams that were strong in the car last season have found themselves struggling while others have found the ability to hit on something and reel off multiple wins in a short period of time. All of that, France says, is part of the development of the car. With time, he said, the racing will be consistently competitive – and that the fans clamoring for more side-by-side racing on the track will find what they are looking for.

More cuts at Ganassi? With 71 employees already in the unemployment line, Chip Ganassi Racing is looking to cut another 30 jobs from its stock-car operations, several current employees said Saturday. The team shut down the #40 Dodge earlier this week after it wasn’t able to find a sponsor for driver Dario Franchitti. With that came layoffs, some of them surprising. Several team sources confirmed that department heads often weren’t included in the decision-making process. Some employees who were laid off had been with SABCO Racing long before Ganassi bought the team from Felix Sabates in 2001. While the #40 Dodge was missing from Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, most of that team still had a job. The cuts last week affected the #41 and #42 teams more than the 40. Most of the mechanics from Reed Sorenson’s and Juan Pablo Montoya’s team received their pink slips, replaced by members of the defunct team. Franchitti, the reigning IndyCar Series champion, has struggled to make the transition to stock cars. Ganassi has offered him a ride in the Nationwide Series for the rest of the season, but the Scot has yet to make a decision. Those left behind now are bracing for more cuts. Many of those who lost their jobs last week apparently didn’t take the news well. In fact, the team had 12 police officers on hand to keep order.(Florida Times Union)(7-6-2008)

Yates close to sponsorship..and a 3rd team?: Doug Yates, who has been worried that he might not make it to year two as a NASCAR team owner, is doing better now, according to Roush, a fellow Ford team owner, who said sponsorship is coming through for Yates — not only enough sponsorship to keep Yates’ two teams going but to allow Yates to expand to a three-car operation [currently #28, #38). No word on who the third driver might be.(Winston Salem Journal)(7-6-2008)

Penske back at the track: Legendary team owner Roger Penske,71, missed his second consecutive NASCAR race weekend after having a scheduled medical procedure (related to his kidney) two weeks ago. Team president Tim Cindric handled the day-to-day operations for both the NASCAR and IndyCar teams in his absence. "The Captain," as Penske is known, is expected back at the track today for the IndyCar Series race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.(Tampa Tribune)(7-6-2008)

Sad News - Irma Combs: Mrs. Irma B. Combs, 89 of Shelby NC, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008. She was employed for 20 years with NASCAR as a track steward until 1970. Her late husband was Roby Combs, Pioneer NASCAR Flagman. She is survived by two sons, Roby S. Combs and Phil Combs, both of Shelby; two grandchildren, Shane Combs of Charleston and Tara Combs of Shelby; and a great-grandchild, Hannah Banicki-Combs of Charleston. France hopes automakers stick with NASCAR: NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said Friday that he is cognizant that Detroit’s Big Three automakers are suffering critical financial problems, but he’s hopeful they will continue to support NASCAR next year and beyond, despite dire circumstances. The news coming out of Detroit in recent weeks has been beyond dismal: General Motors stock has lost nearly 75% of its value in the last nine months and is trading at a 54-year low. Ford Motor Co. stock has fallen nearly 50% in just the last three months, and auto analysts have been predicting that Chrysler LLC will either file bankruptcy or divide the company and sell it piecemeal. According to a report, GM is pulling the plug on its 12 NASCAR track sponsorships, including Daytona International Speedway. That would be the first step of a reduction in Big Three spending in NASCAR. It likely will get worse before it gets better. Some of the more dire predictions among industry websites are that one or more of the Big Three could abandon NASCAR entirely, or perhaps the Nationwide or Craftsman Truck Series. Friday at Daytona, France acknowledged that the automakers are going through tough circumstances. “Well, look, they’re going through a very difficult time and I’m not going to read into all of their issues because they would be better to speak to those,” France said during his annual midseason media press conference. “They have repeatedly told us that their longstanding positions in NASCAR work well. And they’ve got to market their products, whatever their products are going to be. This is a place where they come and get to actually be part of the sport in a way that’s so unique and so different than any other sport.” Still, France acknowledged that NASCAR could well be affected by the chaos in Detroit. “Obviously, with their challenges come reviews and everything else, and we’ll have to see how that goes,” France told reporters. “It would be … we’ll just have to see. Those are the kind of decisions that they’ll need to make. Wish they were more healthy. Think that they will be at some point.”(SPEEDtv)(7-6-2008)
GM Plans to stay: Despite the severe economic problems that General Motors Corp. is experiencing, the automaker’s NASCAR point person said Sunday that GM remains committed to NASCAR. Alba Colon, GM Racing program manager for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, told SPEEDtv.com that she expects that in 2009, GM will fund its NASCAR operations at the same level it is this year. Colon would not discuss specifics about reports that GM would scale back some specific elements of its program, including its track sponsorships.(SPEEDtv)(7-6-2008)

What DEI didn’t announce was a sponsor for Aric Almirola, but DEI President Max Siegel indicated that the team has solidified those plans. Currently, the U.S. Army sponsors that car but it has not announced whether it would remain with DEI next year as it goes through its annual bidding process. “We’re fine,” Siegel said. “We’ll make the announcements of who it is over time.” Siegel said the team is still looking for sponsorship for the #01 car of Smith to be able to keep that car on the track and he said there was nothing new to report on Truex’s status for next year. Truex faces the prospect of losing 100 or 150 points as penalty for his team presenting a car that didn’t meet NASCAR’s roof templates.(SceneDaily)(7-6-2008)

100 Wins for Joe Gibbs Racing: Denny Hamlin’s win in Friday night’s Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway accounted for more than just his eighth career Nationwide Series victory and his third of the season. It marked Joe Gibbs Racing’s (JGR) 100th professional NASCAR victory.(Joe Gibbs Racing PR)(7-5-2008)

NASCAR admits Edwards put in wrong place in race: For the second time in recent weeks, NASCAR officials admitted to lining up drivers in the wrong order on a final restart. In Friday night’s Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards was lined up fourth for the green-white-checkered restart that followed a late-race accident. Then NASCAR officials ordered him to forfeit a position to Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer prior to the green flag. The team was arguing the call when the Winn-Dixie 250 was restarted. With chaos and confusion already surrounding the team, Edwards tried to block Mike Bliss on that restart, got into the side of him and slid off the track for a final finish of 11th. he problem started with the wreck that caused that final caution. Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said that in avoiding the crashing car of Colin Braun, Edwards’ car went into a position where it wasn’t picked up by the scoring loop. “The 60 car, when the incident occurred, had to come way below the yellow line to avoid the incident and he was below where the scoring loops were,” Balash said. “When we back to the freeze the field position, we went back to the last hit on the loops.” The system places the car at the last crossed loop, so since it couldn’t find Edwards’ car, it reverted to the previous loop when he was actually behind Bowyer. He had passed Bowyer between the two loops. To figure it out, NASCAR needed to review video of the incident, which it did after the race.(SceneDaily.com)(7-5-2008)

Nationwide COT on hold: Yahoo! Sports has learned that NASCAR officials have notified team owners in the Nationwide Series that they will delay the introduction of the next generation Nationwide Series race car by one year. According to NASCAR spokesperson Ramsey Poston, the reason for the change is because testing and development is still needed before the car is approved for competition. The underlying reason for the decision however, is that the economic impact of having to build new cars at this time would be a hardship for all of the independent teams of the Nationwide Series. The decision was, in part, based on NASCAR officials meeting individually with smaller team owners to gauge their reaction. An official announcement is expected in two weeks.(Yahoo Sports)(7-4-2008)

With the announcement Friday of Mark Martin’s Cup deal with Hendrick Motorsports for 2009-10, it should be noted that Martin also plans to continue to compete next year in select races for JR Motorsports. On who might replace Martin after his Cup deal is concluded-(from SportingNews.com)-Martin’s deal is for two years, and beyond 2009, Hendrick is still considering the possibilities.”We’ve got a lot of options there,” Hendrick said. “I’ve got two young guys in Brad Keselowski and Landon Cassill that are coming along real fast. One’s 24 (Keselowski) and one’s (soon to be) 19 (Cassill), and there are other options out there, too. We didn’t think we’d end up here (with Martin in the car), so I’m not going to speculate too much what I’m going to do.”

Another Pressley in the Series? UPDATE to JTG in ’09? Another Pressley, Robert’s 19-year-old son Coleman, is working his way up NASCAR’s career ladder. In just his second full season behind the wheel of a Late Model car, he’s battling for the Whelen All-American Series national championship. The youngest Pressley has been racing at many of the same tracks where his father and grandfather once enjoyed much success. His primary track is Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina, and he also competes at Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina.. He plans to make several Craftsman Truck Series starts this season, advancing from half-mile tracks to 1.5-mile ovals, gaining enough experience to be cleared to run the full season beginning at Daytona next year. He’s already in the driver-development program at JTG Motorsports. Although he’s already thinking about some truck series starts later this season, he’s being careful to not lose his concentration on the immediate task at hand. “Right now the focus is on winning that national championship,” he said. “I’ve got the Pressley family name behind me, and I want to bring it back to NASCAR.”(Owen Sound Sun Times)(7-3-2008)
UPDATE: JTG Racing owner Tad Geschickter said Friday he hopes to move Marcos Ambrose to the Sprint Cup Series next season, in addition to having Nationwide and truck series teams in 2009. JTG currently fields two cars in the Nationwide Series, for Ambrose and Kelly Bires. Geschickter said Bires would stay in the Nationwide Series in 2009, with Coleman Pressley to drive for the team in the truck series. The team currently fields Fords but Geschickter said the manufacturer the team will be affiliated with next year is open.(SceneDaily.com)(7-5-2008)

Brad Daugherty, a former NBA and North Carolina player, will partner with Tad and Jodi Geschickter to run a truck team full time next season. It’s a return to the series for Daugherty, who also works as an ESPN broadcaster for NASCAR events. Daugherty owned Liberty Racing from the mid-1990s to about 2000. His team won three truck races, including two with the late Kenny Irwin.(Roanoke.com)(7-5-2008)

Randy Moss, NFL All Pro wide receiver with the New England Patriots, will make his debut as a NASCAR team owner on July 19 in the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. Moss has purchased a 50-percent stake in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team owned by long-time series participant David Dollar. Dollar’s team, known as Morgan-Dollar Motorsports, will be renamed Randy Moss Motorsports effective immediately. Sponsorship for the new organization is pending. The new team will utilize Moss’s familiar #81, and will retain Morgan-Dollar’s relationship with Chevrolet. Eric Phillips, long time crew chief for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports will continue to fill that role with Randy Moss Motorsports. TRUCKS: Patriot Games, Moss Looking To Turn A Dollar Around
07-03-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
TRUCKS: Patriot Games, Moss Looking To Turn A Dollar Around New England Patriots star wide receiver Randy Moss will try to make a go of it where so many former National Football Leagues stars have been unable to: as a NASCAR team owner. Moss will partner with NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team owner David Dollar, having purchased a 50 percent ownership in the former Morgan Dollar Motorsports, which has now been renamed Randy Moss Motorsports. The team will field the No. 81 Chevrolet Silverado in the NCTS, starting with the July 19 race at Kentucky Speedway. The newly christened outfit, for now at least, remains unsponsored. Moss and Dollar said the team will continue to field young development drivers during the remainder of 2008 and will look to sign a veteran driver and race for the series championship in 2009, presumably with a sponsor on board. So far this season, seven different drivers have campaigned the team’s trucks in the first 12 races of the 2008 NCTS season. Willie Allen will become the team’s eighth driver when he competes at Kentucky in two weeks

Mid Season Grades: John Wes Townley
TOLEDO OH (7-6-08)–Most 18-year-olds spend their time focused on high school graduation, prom and football games. Not John Wes Townley. He’s spent much of the last several months navigating his No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford around places like Daytona, Iowa, Kentucky, Kansas and Salem as a rookie in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. The Georgia native has gained valuable experience this year with RAB Racing, posting one top-5 and three top-10s in only ten series starts and only finishing outside of the top-15 on two occasions.

In between ARCA races, he’s focused on racing late models at his local short track and making select starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Roush Fenway Racing. Townley is currently fifth in the ARCA RE/MAX Series point standings and the next featured driver in arcaracing.com’s “Mid Season Report Cards”, which recaps the 2008 performance of a different ARCA RE/MAX Series driver and team each day, focusing on the top-15 championship point contenders.

http://www.arcaracing.com/news.cfm?contentid=6808

Mid Season Grades: Frank Kimmel
TOLEDO OH (7-5-08)–In addition to holding ARCA RE/MAX Series records for most laps led, superspeedway pole awards, superspeedway challenge championships, top-5 finishes, top-10 finishes and money won, Frank Kimmel is distinguished as the only driver in the 56-year history of the ARCA RE/MAX Series to earn nine championships–all while behind the wheel of Larry Clement-owned No. 46 racecars. But in 2008 Kimmel and his brother/crew chief Bill departed the championship winning team to start Frank Kimmel Racing.

The result?

Midway through the season, Kimmel has five top-5s, eight top-10s and sits fourth in the point standings. Kimmel, who is second to Iggy Katona on the all-time win list with 71 career wins, has not yet found victory lane this season.

Kimmel is the next featured driver in arcaracing.com’s “Mid Season Report Cards”, which recaps the 2008 performance of a different ARCA RE/MAX Series driver and team each day, focusing on the top-15 championship point contenders.

Mid Season Grades: Matt Carter

TOLEDO OH (7-4-08)–Matt Carter headed into the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series season with tremendous pressure as a series rookie assuming driving duties for the team that led Frank Kimmel to an unprecedented nine series championships. The Denver, North Carolina native answered the pressure with a career-first win at Toledo Speedway in May.

Carter currently sits third in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship Point Standings and is the next featured driver in arcaracing.com’s “Mid Season Report Cards”, which recaps the 2008 performance of a different ARCA RE/MAX Series driver and team each day, focusing on the top-15 championship point contenders.

Kmart 250 to separate “Contenders” from “Pretenders”

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-With only 101 points separating the top six in the Sears Auto Center Northern Division standings, the Kmart 250 at Motor Mile (Va.) Speedway on July 12 will be a critical race in determining who will become the divisional champion.

With just four races remaining in the regular season, drivers no longer have the option of a mulligan and every position is worth fighting for.

“You don’t want to point race, but you have to be smart to win these titles,” said Benny Gordon, who has three Northern Division titles under his belt and currently leads the standings. “You want to win these races, but, if you don’t have the car to do it, you need to come up with a strategy to get the best finish you can. Some guys can’t do that, and that’s why they don’t win titles.”

Gordon practiced what he preached at Salem Speedway, taking a 10th-place car and finishing third. But even with his podium finish, Gordon saw rookie Mikey Kile pull to within 35 points in the standings.
