Ganassi Gasses Franchitti
by: Chuck Adams
After months of rumors swirling around Ganassi HQ, Chip finally shuts everyone up by pulling the plug on the 40 car due to lack of sponsorship money. OK, so he did not shut everyone up, and simply opened the door for more rampant speculation.

NASCAR’s money game
http://snipurl.com/2t839-gazete
The news out of the Chip Ganassi NASCAR camp on Tuesday, that he was shutting down Dario Franchitti’s race team, may have come as a surprise to some, but to insiders it was merely a sign of the times Racing in America’s premier series has become so expensive, even established teams such as Ganassi’s are having trouble attracting enough sponsorship to remain financially viable. Ganassi had essentially been running his third Cup team out of his own pocket since the start of the season and continuing on with that model was putting his other two teams in jeopardy. “In this tough business environment, continuing to run the car without proper funding has become increasingly difficult,” Ganassi explained. Just how much money are we talking about? These days, properly funding a single NASCAR team often means finding a corporate sponsor willing to shell out $20-25 million or more for a primary sponsorship – a price tag that puts NASCAR on the same sponsorship level as a Formula One team.

Hendrick Motorsports will hold a news conference at the press conference room in the Daytona International Speedway infield media center in Daytona Beach, FL on Friday, July 4 at 12:30pm/et to announce future plans for its #5 Chevrolet team. Owner Rick Hendrick will be in attendance.(Hendrick Motorsports)(7-3-2008)
Franchitti undecided on future plans: Dario Franchitti isn’t sure what his future holds, but the former open-wheel star said Wednesday he’d like to remain in NASCAR. Franchitti lost his full-time ride Tuesday when team owner Chip Ganassi closed down the unsponsored No. 40 Dodge 17 races into Franchitti’s first season. The move also resulted in 71 layoffs. “This is not a decision he made lightly, and it shows how bad the economy is,” Franchitti told The Associated Press. “And you certainly never want to see all those people lose their jobs. I know for certain Chip struggled with that — I didn’t even recognize his voice when he called me to tell me what he had to do. But the decision has been made and now I’ll sit with Chip next week and decide what we’re going to do going forward.” Ganassi’s got sponsorship on his Nationwide Series car, and has offered Franchitti that seat going forward. Ganassi also has successful teams in the IRL and Grand Am Series. Franchitti wasn’t sure Wednesday what he’ll do next. “Let’s see what the future holds. I really just need to sit with Chip and see where his head is,” he said. “But NASCAR is where I want to be. I want to be successful here and I certainly don’t want it to end like this. I made a big commitment coming over here and I’d like to get in an opportunity to be successful.” Franchitti said he’ll skip Saturday night’s race in Daytona and, after briefly considering returning to England to watch the British Grand Prix, decided to stay at his Nashville, Tenn., home this weekend clearing his head. He doesn’t regret leaving the IRL for NASCAR. “When I made the decision to come here, I wasn’t going to do the IndyCar thing anymore so this isn’t a case of missing out on what could have been in Indy cars,” Franchitti said. “That just wasn’t a direction I wanted to go in. Never say never, but it’s unlikely I’ll go back.” He’s also not sure about moving to Grand-Am, where Ganassi drivers Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett are leading the standings. For now, he’s waiting to see what Ganassi has available for him and is hopeful something can be worked out in NASCAR. Although the results don’t show it, Franchitti and his team had made slow progress since he returned from his broken ankle four races ago. He started a career-best seventh last week in New Hampshire, but finished 38th.(Associated Press)(7-3-2008)
BAM Racing could return at Indy: #49 BAM Racing is targeting July 27’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard as a possible return date. “Beth Ann [Morgenthau, the team’s owner] loves Indianapolis, and if we can make that race, we’re definitely going to try to do that,” said BAM Racing spokesperson Rhett Vandiver. BAM last competed in a points race at Martinsville on March 30 with Ken Schrader behind the wheel. The team’s planned two-race sabbatical to facilitate a switch from Dodge to Toyota turned into a long-term hiatus when primary sponsorship fell through. While searching for a primary sponsor, the company has still been offering its Diamond Sponsorship Program, which allows companies with smaller marketing budgets to get signage on the car, along with other activation materials. When the program launched last year it was being offered at an introductory rate of just less than $5,000. While Vandiver said he didn’t know how many Diamond Sponsors were now onboard, he added that when the team does return to the track it will have a lot of new decals to make for the car. A large portion of BAM’s workforce has been laid off, but the general feeling around NASCAR circles is that team members are ready to come back at a moment’s notice. That includes the 53-year-old Schrader. “My understanding is he’s ready to go when we are,” Vandiver said.(Long Island Press), looks like a company, Hapman may be a sponsor, see images of the car recently at the shop at forum.stockcar-news.de and scroll down or see a couple on my #49 Team Schemes page.(7-3-2008)

Yeley’s #96 DLP HDTV Toyota will have a special paint scheme featuring the film “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” which is set to be released July 11. The film, based on the Jules Verne novel, is a co-venture between New Line Cinema and Walden Media and is the first live-action feature film to be shot and released entirely in digital 3-D. Daytona Rookie Notes: #01-Regan Smith was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the June 29 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Smith scored a 27th-place finish and claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the sixth time in 2008. #10-Patrick Carpentier won his first Sprint Cup Series pole position at New Hampshire and it came in his 17th career start. He became the first Raybestos Rookie to win a pole since Denny Hamlin grabbed the top starting position at the 2006 Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Racewa, a span of 62 races. Carpentier was also the only Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap at New Hampshire, holding the top spot once for four laps. He also led once for four laps at Darlington Raceway (race No. 11). #77-Sam Hornish Jr. leads Smith by five points (162-157) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the July 5 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Greg Biffle is the only Raybestos Rookie to win the Coke Zero 400. Biffle won the race in 2003, scoring his first career win in the Sprint Cup Series. Biffle crossed the finish line 4.102 second ahead of second place finisher Jeff Burton and led only once, covering the final 21 laps. He was the only Raybestos Rookie to score a win during the 2003 season. Since 1975, only three Raybestos Rookies have scored a top-five finish in the Coke Zero 400: 1979-Dale Earnhardt, third; 1993-Jeff Gordon, fifth; 2003-Greg Biffle, FIRST. Three Raybestos Rookies have won the pole position for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona: Geoffrey Bodine (1982), Davey Allison (1987), and Mike Skinner (1997). Davey Allison is the only Raybestos Rookie since 1975 to lead the most laps in the Coke Zero 400 (twice for 32 laps in 1987).(Camp & Assoc/Raybestos), see Rookies standings, history or more on my 2008 Rookies page.(7-3-2008) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2008/roty2008.htm

Reese’s on the #29 at Daytona: Reese’s, a major associate sponsor of RCR’s #29 Chevy of Kevin Harvick kicks into high gear this weekend in Daytona as Harvick and the #29 team transform their bright yellow-and-red Shell-Pennzoil Chevy into a bright orange Reese’s racing machine for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Reese’s has become the No. 1 selling candy bar in the United States and the Reese’s brand is the most successful brand owned by The Hershey Company. On Thursday, July 3, Harvick will officially wave the green flag on the Pennzoil Clean Change Challenge, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the need to properly dispose of used motor oil. Harvick will join Pennzoil and Wal-Mart’s finest team members in an attempt to collect 200 gallons of used motor oil in just two hours. The two-hour event, which will kick off at 10 a.m. at the Wal-Mart located at 1101 Beville Rd, in Daytona Beach, Fla., is designed to help ensure that used motor oil is properly recycled and that Florida’s drinking water stays clean. In honor of Harvick’s commitment, and to help motivate the local residents to participate Pennzoil is proud to donate $29 to the Central Florida Boy Scouts Council for each gallon of used oil collected.(RCR PR), see images of the scheme on my #29 Team Schemes page.(7-3-2008) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/29cup.htm
Five NASCAR-related nominations for the ESPY Awards: There are five NASCAR-related nominations for this year’s 16th annual ESPY Awards. #18-Kyle Busch is involved in three of the five. At last summer’s Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, #26-Jamie McMurray edged Busch for the victory by a margin of only .005-seconds, the second-closest margin since NASCAR instituted electronic scoring in 1993. That spectacular under-the-lights ending has been nominated in the “Best Finish” category. Busch also is nominated in the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” category and in the “Best Driver” category. Two-time defending Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and Dario Franchitti also are nominated for Best Driver. Franchitti’s nomination was based primarily on his splendid 2007 season in open-wheel racing, when he won the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. The “2008 ESPYs” will be held July 16 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. This marks the first time for the show at the Nokia Theatre, following a six-year run at the Kodak Theatre. The show – hosted annually by ESPN – will be televised on Sunday, July 20 at 9pm/et on ESPN and ESPN HD, hosted by Justin Timberlake. All awards are determined by an online fan vote. Waltrip gives car to victim of scam: After hearing about an Iraq war veteran who was victimized by an Internet scam, former NASCAR champion Darrell Waltrip stepped in and gave the man a 2004 Honda Accord on Tuesday. The vehicle has a Kelley Blue Book retail value of about $13,000. “It’s beyond awesome,” said Jay Strobino, 24, of Franklin, who lost $5,500 trying to buy a used Honda Accord on Craigslist earlier this year. He wired the money to a scam artist who claimed to be heading out soon for a military deployment, setting up a fake WorldPay Web site to handle the purchase. Strobino’s story appeared in The Tennessean on Tuesday in an article about the growing sophistication of Internet fraud. Waltrip said the general manager of his Franklin auto dealership, John Gallagher, alerted him to the story and recommended the vehicle giveaway. “I thought that’s a no-brainer — let’s help this kid out,” Waltrip said after handing Strobino the keys at Darrell Waltrip Honda Volvo on Tuesday. “There are so many fake sites,” he said. “You really have to be sure. We’re in the car business, and he got ripped off by someone pretending to be real.” Waltrip said he also was motivated by Strobino’s military service. Strobino, who was injured in a firefight south of Baghdad in 2004, is a Silver Star medal recipient, the third highest-ranking military honor. When hearing the Honda dealership was going to give him a car Tuesday, Strobino, who described himself as being “broke,” said simply: “Are you serious?”(Tennessean)(7-2-2008)
