TV Times – Auto Manufacturers To Cut/Trim Sprint Cup Team Support?
by: Lou Modestino
At a recent meeting of a group of motorsports types in New England, the subject of Detroit automakers involvement in motorsports, particularly NASCAR, was among various things discussed. It was the opinion, of those in the know, that NASCAR could feel the impact of the Big Three automakers who must reinventing themselves in order to survive.

NASCAR plans no post-race penalty on Montoya
Juan Pablo Montoya was hit with a two-lap penalty Sunday after he intentionally ran into NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch during a late caution period at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Montoya spun out Busch, but the move backfired when Busch’s car came back across the track and hit Montoya’s. The former open-wheel star, in his [...]

DEI, Almirola, Army announcement today? An official announcement that Aric Almirola will drive the #8 car at Dale Earnhardt Inc. full time next season will be made on Tuesday, sources close to the situation said. The decision to put Almirola into the U.S. Army-sponsored car full time had nothing to do with Martin’s decision to return to a full-time Sprint Cup schedule and make one last run at a championship, sources said. It had more to do with advancing Almirola’s talents and taking advantage of the appeal he has shown with sponsors looking for a younger driver. One of those is U.S. Army, whose target audience fits the 24-year-old Almirola much more than the 49-year-old Martin.(ESPN.com)(7-1-2008)
Earnhardt brings fearless approach to barrel racing: 19-year-old Taylor Earnhardt, daughter of the late Dale Earnhardt and Teresa Houston Earnhardt — wrapped up her nearly weeklong stay in Marshall yesterday while doing what Earnhardt’s do — race. Miss Earnhardt’s racing talents are centered on fast horses — not speedy race cars — and her visit to the area was spent at Josey Ranch where she, along with her horse, Packin Sixes Cowboy, were in town to improve their respective games in the world of barrel racing. ESPN crews were on hand Saturday filming a segment on Miss Earnhardt and her equestrian skills. “ESPN being here at the ranch is exciting for all the other girls too,” said Stephanie Boyd, Josey Ranch Clinic Coordinator, late Friday afternoon. “It will open Josey Ranch to different people who have never had the opportunity to see what we have and that are not familiar with what we offer, not only on a national level, but a regional level as well.”(see full story at the Marshall News Messenger)(7-1-2008)

The network, which targets its programming at rural America, in association with Baker Curb Racing will sponsor car #37, driven by Brad Baker, at the Winn Dixie 250 from Daytona Speedway. Additionally, the race car will trumpet Music & Motors, which will meld Nashville music with NASCAR features when it debuts in September.(Multichannel News), see an image of the car on my #37 Team Paint Schemes Page.(6-30-2008) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/nationwide/37nationwide.htm

June was quite a month for Landon Cassill. The 18-year-old captured his first career pole last Saturday at New Hampshire joining Colin Braun (No. 16 Citifinancial Ford), 19, and Joey Logano, (two poles) 18, as teenage pole winners this year. Cassill also registered his best NASCAR national series finish when he was third at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at The Milwaukee Mile while pulling double duty.He was ninth at Nashville, his best NASCAR Nationwide Series finish, and followed that up with an 11th-place result at Kentucky Speedway.Cassill won’t be racing at Daytona but his “replacement” should continue the march of solid results.Dale Earnhardt Jr., the two time series champion, will drive the No. 5 Delphi Chevrolet Friday night while Cassill will watch and learn.Earnhardt has five series wins at Daytona including two in this event, the last in 2006. This will be his seventh race this season and he’s looking for his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory since he won at Michigan International Speedway in 2006.(NASCAR) (06-30-08)
Kelly Bires on racing at Daytona-Q:HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED CHESS? THEY ALWAYS SAY DRAFTING IS KIND OF LIKE TRYING TO PLAN YOUR MOVES IN ADVANCE. “I’ve never played chess, so I couldn’t tell you about that. I don’t think I’m smart enough to do that, but Daytona is about being in the right line. It’s about being patient. Sometimes you’re in one line and you feel like everyone is going by you, but the next time you come around and your line is moving, so sometimes you get a huge run and you want to pull out and pass someone, but sometimes you’ve just got to stay there and you’d be better off. It is a lot of making decisions and you don’t get very much space and time to make those decisions, so you rely on a good spotter helping you out and a lot of it is instincts. There’s so much patience involved. You’re telling yourself, ‘No, no, no,’ more than anything. You want to do it. You’ve got a run and it’s like, ‘I can easily pass these guys,’ and the next thing you know you’re 15 spots back when you get through the end of the corner. Restrictor-plate racing is definitely a trade. Some people are better at it than others, but I think we’re pretty good and I think we’re taking a great Clorox Ford Fusion there, too.” (Ford Racing) (06-30-08)

Justin Allgaier Becomes One of Two Repeat Winners in 2008 with Inaugural Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 Victory
Justin Allgaier led 57 of 250 laps in his family-owned No. 16 Zoller & Bergfield Farming-AG Tech Chevrolet to win the inaugural Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Canada’s Cayuga Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The win represented Allgaier’s fourth career ARCA RE/MAX Series victory and second of 2008.
“I got turned around early,” Allgaier said. “Ricky (Stenhouse Jr.) and I got together a little. I had to check up and got around. It’s one of those the racing things. This place is tight and one lane so to come out of here with a win we’re pretty happy with that. I got into the wall in the front straightaway, just racing hard out there. I love this track! I told the guys that this is such a cool little track and I had so much fun. I am so proud of these guys doing so much with so little and this is for them. We did our homework and made sure we came here with all our ducks in a row and it showed. We had the best time we could for 250 laps and we ended up in Victory Lane. That is really special to me to win the inaugural race here at Cayuga Motor Speedway. We have Zoller & Bergfield Farming on the car here and Ebby who owns the midget I drive so I was really glad to bring them to victory lane.”
In all, eight drivers have found victory lane in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series season. In addition to Allgaier (Salem, Cayuga) and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (Kentucky, Pocono), 2008 race winners include Michael Annett (Daytona), Justin Allgaier (Salem), Matt Hawkins (Iowa), Scott Speed (Kansas), Joey Logano (Rockingham), Matt Carter (Toledo) and Justin Lofton (Michigan).
The ARCA RE/MAX Series record for most different race winners in a single season of competition is 17, set in 2006.

Following the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250, several ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers will participate in an open test session at Kentucky Speedway on Tuesday, July 1st in preparation for the Friday night, July 18th ARCA RE/MAX 150 at Kentucky Speedway. The full day test session will help teams prepare for ARCA’s 17th appearance to the 1.5-mile speedway. In May, Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., the current series point leader, took advantage of a late-race restart to pull away from the 41-car field and earn his career first series victory.
Other ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers who have found victory lane at Kentucky Speedway include Frank Kimmel, Chad Blount, Ryan Hemphill, Kyle Busch, Brad Coleman, Erik Darnell, Michael McDowell, Ryan Newman, Tim Steele and Steve Wallace.
