I get a text message when each Cup race ends, with a list of the top ten finishers. I was surely surprised by yesterday’s list. What an unusual group of 10 there… I figured it was either a big wreck or rain… yep, I was right. Check out all the results and latest NASCAR news right here in today’s Stock Car Gazette…

Kurt Busch wins rain-shortened Cup race in New Hampshire
Former series champion Kurt Busch stayed on track when the leaders pitted late in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire and the strategy paid off with a win when the race was cut 17 laps short by rain. It is the first victory for the Penske Racing driver since last September at California Speedway [...]

Montoya Penalized Two Laps
Juan Pablo Montoya was hit with a two-lap penalty Sunday after he intentionally ran into NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch during a late caution period at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Montoya spun out Busch, but the move backfired when Busch’s car came back across the track and hit Montoya’s. The former open-wheel star, in his second full season in NASCAR, was called to the NASCAR hauler after the race for a talking to, although officials said there would be no further penalties. The penalty dropped Montoya to 32nd place, while Busch finished 25th.
The Lenox Tools 400 Winner: Kurt Busch
Even Kurt Busch couldn’t believe his good fortune, he had just taken the lead in the Lenox Tools 400 when his fellow competitors started peeling off to get gas. Busch had pitted for fuel with 84 laps to go and he was still going to be a few laps short, unless there was a caution. Busch, Casey Mears, Michael Waltrip, Greg Biffle and a few others pitted on lap 217. All those drivers were stretching the fuel and hearing that rain was on the way. They took the gamble and chose not to pit on the final two cautions and with 20 laps to go, the race was red-flagged for light rain. Kurt Busch lucked into a victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when the rain got harder and NASCAR called the race with Busch leading. It was the first win for Busch this year, the 18th victory of his 273 race career.
Michael Waltrip finished in the second spot, a badly needed good points day. J.J. Yeley was also in need of a good finish and he brought his Toyota home in third place. Martin Truex Jr. was fourth followed by Elliott Sadler, Reed Sorenson, Casey Mears, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte to round out the top ten. One has to feel for Tony Stewart — he led the most laps (132) but finished a disappointing 13th because of the way the rain caution fell. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Dover International Speedway next Saturday night, June 5th, 2008, for the Coke Zero 400. The race is scheduled to start at 8:00 PM / Eastern Time on TNT. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Sorenson May Stay With Ganassi
If statistics told the whole story, Reed Sorenson could well be headed to another team and team owner Chip Ganassi looking for another driver for his No. 41 Dodge next season. Instead, Sorenson is mulling a contract extension offer from Ganassi, one he believes will result in continuation of his NASCAR partnership with Ganassi well into the future. “I expect everything will be worked out in the next week or two,” said the 22-year-old native of Peachtree City, Ga.
Darby Offers Open Testing
John Darby, NASCAR’s Sprint Cup director, had a nice surprise for the series crew chiefs Saturday, offering them the opportunity to guide the sanctioning organization in setting next year’s testing policy. “NASCAR’s the policy-maker, but one thing that’s really reliant on the teams’ input is what we test, how many times we test and where we test,” Darby said after a brief meeting with the crew chiefs in the garage area at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Dale Jr. Says “Leave Me Alone”
Dale Earnhardt Jr. got a little testy Friday when asked again about future plans to move his Nationwide Series team up to Sprint Cup. “I shouldn’t have said anything about that, man,” Earnhardt said. “I should have kept it to myself, because I don’t want to talk about it in the press. That’s personal to me, what I do with my business, and I’m damn sure ain’t going to air my timeline out over the media. “If we feel like we want to do that, we’ll do it. We’ll let you know and that will be that. I don’t want to answer questions about it every week. My [Nationwide] team is doing great. I’d be foolish to make too many changes right now.”

Montoya and Kyle Busch tangle: While trying to wreck #18-Kyle Busch on Sunday, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya managed to wreck himself in the process near the end of the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. And he did it during a caution. After a caution flag flew with 21 laps to go, Montoya ran into the right-rear fender of Busch’s car. It caused Busch to spin and hit Montoya’s car as Montoya was driving by. “We always give each other lots of room,” Montoya said of Busch. “But he went wide like I wasn’t there. Then I got beside him and he started banging me like he was trying to wreck me. I looked at him like, ‘What are you doing?’ ” Montoya had no problem admitting he deliberately ran into Busch’s car. “Yeah. I did what he did to me,” Montoya said. “I don’t appreciate people who race me like that. There’s a fine line and he crossed it.” Apparently, NASCAR officials felt the same was about Montoya’s retaliation move. He was assessed a two-lap penalty for rough driving outside of race procedure. It dropped Montoya to 32nd in the finishing order. Busch finished 25th, but still leads the Cup standings by 64 points over #31-Jeff Burton. So what caused the altercation with Montoya? “I have no idea,” Busch said. “I got a run on him earlier. I didn’t turn down into him. He ran me up the race track. The caution came out and he thought he had to beat me. I touched his door and he spun me out. I don’t know what his beef is.”(ESPN.com)(6-30-2008)

Sad news: Arrangements added: The patriarch of a very familiar family in Southwest Florida has died. Bob Germain Sr. passed away Friday night in his sleep. Kyle Busch to run both Kentucky & ORP: Busch will enter Craftsman Truck Series races when those are companion events or reachable – he says he simply couldn’t make the Memphis race this weekend. “Kentucky and St. Louis are two weeks that are together for the truck and Nationwide stuff. I never really had St. Louis plans to run in the Nationwide so we’re just going to go and run Kentucky for the truck race. “Companion events ultimately, those are the easiest and we’ve still got plenty of those that are planned,” Busch said. “Sometimes there’s a couple that are still back and forth traveling-wise. Like Indy, Indy will be a big one. We’re going to run the truck race, the Nationwide race and the Cup race that weekend at Indy so that will be a big weekend. You don’t have to go that far. You just have to go over to Claremont there to the short track.(SceneDaily.com)(6-28-2008)

Hornaday Wins O’Reilly 200 at Memphis
06-28-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Defending NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday Jr. scored a dominating victory in Saturday night’s O’Reilly 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park, race No. 12 of 25 on the season. Hornaday led all but 65 laps on the night, and in the process reclaimed the series points lead over Johnny Benson, who broke a motor midway through the race after running strong early on. Hornaday easily bested Erik Darnell, Matt Crafton and Rick Crawford to seal the deal in a green-white-checkered finish. Benson took the lead on the opening lap, his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota Tundra holding off the Zaxby’s Ford F-150 of second-qualifier Bobby East. Defending series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. took over the second spot on Lap 2, quickly moving his Camping World Chevrolet Silverado around East.

Late-race bump, pass puts rookie in Salem Speedway Victory Lane
Salem, Ind.-How wild was the finish of the Lucas Oil 200 presented by Touchstone Energy at Salem Speedway? Well, consider this, Benny Gordon was running third and figured he was in the right place on a restart with four laps remaining.
“I really thought they were going to wreck each other and I was going to get a win,” said Gordon.
Gordon was referring to leader Allen Purkhiser and rookie Mikey Kile, who were both searching for their first Hooters Pro Cup wins and leaving nothing on the table.
Gordon’s premonition proved incorrect, but just barely.
