NASCAR about to feel the chill from Detroit?
It’s no secret that the worst automobile market in 20 years has the Detroit auto companies reeling. It’s in the national news and in newspapers across the country, and it’s often the lead story on network newscasts and prime time business programming. And, of course, it’s prominent on the Internet too. This isn’t just a [...]

Jarrett Named Grand Marshal For Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola - Outback President Jeff Smith will serve as Honorary Starter: Three-time Daytona 500 champion and founding member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family Dale Jarrett has been named Grand Marshal for the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, July 5 Speedway officials announced today. Outback Steakhouse President Jeff Smith will serve as Honorary Starter. Jarrett captured a victory in the Independence Day classic in 1999 and will give the starting command “Gentlemen, start your engines” for Coke Zero’s inaugural sponsored race at “The World Center of Racing.” Jarrett, who won the 1999 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, recently retired from NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition as the driver of the No. 44 UPS Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing. Smith, who will wave the Green Flag to get action started, began his career in 1989 at the original Outback Steakhouse restaurant on Henderson Boulevard in Tampa, Fla. Outback Steakhouse was one of the first restaurants to serve Coke Zero across its national operations. Tickets for the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola and all other weekend activities are available online at www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP. - Daytona International Speedway, Press Release
58th Fighter Squadron To Perform Flyover at Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola: The “Mighty Gorillas,” of the 58th Fighter Squadron, part of the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., will perform the flyover at the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, July 5, Speedway officials announced today. “We’re excited to have the 58th Fighter Squadron join us in the Coke Zero 400 Weekend festivities at Daytona International Speedway,” said Speedway President Robin Braig. “The ‘Mighty Gorillas’ will add to what is already a great show celebrating Independence Day.” It is the second time in two years the four-ship, F-15s have performed a flyover at DIS. The squadron, which flies the F-15C Eagle that can reach speeds of 1,875 mph, also did the flyover for the 2007 Daytona 500. “It is a great opportunity to be a part of Daytona International Speedway events again,” said Lt. Col. Todd Jaax, 58th FS commander. “What better way to celebrate our nation’s birthday that than by showing NASCAR fans the awesome capabilities of the F-15 and the United States Air Force.” The squadron has a long and distinguished history an as air superiority fighter squadron that dates back to World War II. They scored the first aerial victory in Desert Storm as well as the most aerial victories (16). Tickets to see the “Mighty Gorillas” in action prior to the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola are available online at www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP. - Daytona International Speedway, Press Release

Rick Crawford Buys Montgomery Motor Speedway
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Rick Crawford is hoping to bring racing back to the dormant Montgomery Motor Speedway as early as this fall. Crawford, a Mobile native who drives the No. 14 Ford Power Stroke Diesel for Circle Bar Racing, said today that he has agreed to buy the track from current owner Bill Manfull and has sent an earnest-money check to the auction company handling the sale. The sale is contingent on the city granting a new license to operate the track.

More on Stewart and Haas CNC: Tony Stewart is shopping for car sponsorships in anticipation of a potential partnership with Haas CNC Racing, multiple sources told ESPN.com. Although Stewart has a year left on his contract at Joe Gibbs Racing and JGR officials insist he hasn’t asked for a release, the two-time Sprint Cup champion appears prepared to share ownership of Haas Racing’s two-car team in 2009. One source close to the situation said there have been discussions with Ryan Newman as the second driver. Newman has said he will not return to Penske Racing if the performance of that team doesn’t improve quickly. Newman’s name definitely would help draw sponsorship to Haas. “He’s talking to every major sponsor that is available out there for this Haas deal,” one source said of Stewart and his representatives. “I don’t know if it’s done, but it sounds like it’s very close.” Office Depot and Old Spice have emerged as the favorites for at least one of the cars. Office Depot lost its bid to remain with Carl Edwards of Roush Fenway Racing when Aflac was chosen as the primary sponsor of the #99. Sources said there have been discussions with Stewart’s representatives that would make Office Depot and Old Spice co-primaries with Office Depot as the lead sponsor. Old Spice already has a relationship with Stewart in the Cup and Nationwide Series. Stewart would not address his future following Sunday’s race at Infineon Raceway. JGR president J.D. Gibbs insisted Stewart had not closed the door on signing a long-term deal with the company that brought him to Cup racing in 1999 and helped him win titles in 2002 and 2005. But there is widespread speculation that the reason JGR has rushed Joey Logano into the Nationwide Series is to prepare him to take Stewart’s place should Stewart leave. Stewart admitted two months ago there had been inquiries from other teams. He acknowledged there had been talks with Haas CNC that included ownership.(ESPN.com)
AND: am hearing that Stewart leaving JGR and buying into Haas CNC Racing is a done deal, supposedly the 2nd driver could be Martin Treux Jr. Hearing the sponsors could be UPS and Bass Pro Shops.(6-26-2008)
Sadler’s #19 to feature movie: In conjunction with Best Buy and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the #19 Dodge of Elliott Sadler will carry the movie title “Hancock” on the hood and rear bumper in New Hampshire. Starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron, the movie debuts in theaters on July 2. All Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodges will carry a decal in New Hampshire honoring NHRA driver Scott Kalitta who died last weekend in a racing accident.(GEM PR)(6-26-2008)
Waltrip Expresses his Gratitude for the Bahre Family at New Hampshire: When Michael Waltrip reminisces about people who have had a positive impact on his career, Dick Bahre and his family are at the top of his list. Thanks to Bahre taking a chance on a 22-year-old originally from Owensboro, Kentucky in 1985, Waltrip made his Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) debut and over the years became an accomplished driver, a two-time Daytona 500 winner and an owner himself. To show his appreciation, Waltrip will run a special decal on two Michael Waltrip Racing cars at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 this weekend in honor of the Bahre family. “We want to say thanks to the Bahre family and show our gratitude by placing decals on Michael McDowell’s #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota and the #55 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota,” Waltrip said.(MWR PR)(6-26-2008)
No Sponsor for Robby Gordon at New Hampshire: Robby Gordon and the #7 Dodge will be sporting the “back in black” paint scheme once again this weekend. Primary sponsorship opportunities are still available for this weekend’s race, and interested parties should contact the team via robbygordon.com.(RGM PR)(6-26-2008)
Sylvania on the hood of the #15 at NHMS: Menards Racing will feature Sylvania on the hood of it’s #15 Menards/Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevy that Paul Menard will drive during this weekend’s LENOX Industrial Tools “301″. Sylvania is based in nearby Danvers, Massachusetts and has been a partner sponsor of Menards Racing since 2004.(Co-Pillott PR). See image of the scheme on my #15 Team Schemes page.(6-26-2008)

Brad Daugherty starting truck team in ‘09? UPDATE JTG Racing…to CUP?: After discussion surrounding the recent announcement of Randy Moss’ possible entry in the Truck Series [supposedly the Morgan-Dollar team] during ESPN’s NASCAR Now television broadcast on Wednesday night, analyst Brad Daugherty announced he too is going racing in 2009 with his own Craftsman Truck Series team. [No details given.](The Daly Planet)(5-1-2008)
UPDATE: As part of an article about Kelly Bires, ESPN’s Mark Ashenfelter reports…It’s been a hectic year for JTG, which ended its relationship with Wood Brothers Racing on the competition side prior to the season. Since the year started, teammate Marcos Ambrose has swapped crew chiefs and the team has, at least temporarily, closed its Craftsman Truck Series team. And Brad Daugherty, a former team owner turned broadcaster, has bought into the team. [JTG Racing fields the #47 and 59 Nationwide teams and had fielded the #20-truck which has since ceased operations. [No word on if/when truck team will return to the Truck Series]. For complete article visit: ESPN.com.(6-24-2008)
UPDATE 2: hearing JTG Racing could move up to Sprint Cup in 2009 with Marcos Ambrose driving and the team could switch from Ford to Chevy, no idea if Daugherty would be part of this deal. Other rumors have Ambrose going to the #21 of the Wood Brothers in 2009, that team would remain a Ford. Ambrose is schedule to run eight races this season in the #21 and four in the #47 Ford fielded by JTG Racing.(6-25-2008)

The Baltimore-based performance apparel company will paste its logo next to a Boston Red Sox mark on NASCAR driver Carl Edwards’ #60 car this weekend at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Under Armour is a corporate partner of the Red Sox, which enabled the company to team up with Roush Fenway Racing on the NASCAR sponsorship. Edwards is also an Under Armour endorser and was featured in the company’s 60-second Super Bowl ad in February. AAA Southern New England, also a Red Sox sponsor, is partnering with the team to sponsor David Ragan’s #6 Ford.(Baltimre Business Journal)(6-25-2008)
Kennington Pulling International Double Duty: DJ Kennington, driver of the Mahindra Tractors, N.P.P., #81 Dodge in the Nationwide Series, will be pulling double duty this weekend, but none like any other driver. As many drivers attempt double duty (driving in the Nationwide Series and Nextel/Sprint Cup Series) in the same weekend, no one else does it having to pass through customs. “This is one of the toughest doubles to pull this season”, claims St Thomas Ontario, Canada native, Kennington. “The race in the Nationwide Series is in Loudon, New Hampshire at 3:00pm and the Canadian Tire Series is at Barrie Speedway at 8:00pm. All I have to do is cross over a big pond, right?” Kennington will attempt the International Double Duty again next week as well. The second race of the Canadian Tire Series at St. Eustache’ was postponed to July 5th. “Daytona on the 4th and St Eustache’ on the 5th, now that’s a haul.” The “haul” Kennington is referring to is the 1,407 mile trek from one series to another.(MacDonald Motorsports PR)(6-25-2008)

Team GLOCK Racing To Sponsor ARCA RE/MAX Series Timing and Scoring, Live Audio Webcast From Cayuga Motor Speedway
Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 Marks Debut of ARCA Racing Radio Network
TOLEDO OH (6-25-08)–Live, streaming audio will be broadcast from Cayuga Motor Speedway this Sunday as the ARCA Racing Radio Network debuts on www.arcaracing.com.
Officials from ARCA and ACME Branding Company have jointly announced that the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 will mark the first of seven events webcast on arcaracing.com. Live streaming audio coverage of the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday afternoon, June 29th. Content includes a 30 minute pre-race show followed by a live audio broadcast of the race, which marks the series’ first appearance to Canada in 16 years and the 10th of 21 events on the 2008 series schedule.
“We have decided to test live audio at the seven remaining events that will not be broadcast live on national television,” said Mark Gundrum, VP of Marketing and Communications for ARCA. “We believe that the combination of live timing and scoring and an audio webcast will provide comprehensive coverage of ARCA Racing, second only to live TV.”
Team Glock Racing, primary sponsor of the No. 37 Spraker Racing Chevrolet driven by Dexter Bean, has entered into a multi-faceted agreement including title sponsorship of live-to-web timing and scoring, presenting sponsorship of live race audio and presenting sponsorship of ARCA’s weekly “Inside ARCA” radio broadcast, which streams live on arcaracing.com Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. Each of these arcaracing.com enhancements is free to website visitors.
The live audio call of ARCA RE/MAX Series race events will serve as an enhancement to the live-to-web arcaracing.com timing and scoring feature that debuted at the 2008 ARCA 200 at Daytona in February. Plans call for audio broadcasts from ARCA RE/MAX Series races at Cayuga (6/29), Berlin (7/26), Pocono (8/2), Springfield (8/17), DuQuoin (9/1), Salem (9/13) and New Jersey Motorsports Park (9/28).

Denny Hamlin Gets Reality Check
by Brian Watkins
NASCAR Rivals: Kevin Harvick vs. Tony Stewart
Okay, so they’re actually pretty good friends and probably the furthest thing from being rivals with one another, but still. It’s pretty abnormal for Smoke to run this deep into the season without a Sprint Cup win to show for it, but so far in 2008, he’s managed to do just that.
