Charity Events Raise More than $150,000 for Speedway Children’s Charities at NASCAR: It was a banner weekend for Sonoma County youth groups as two events held during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend combined to raise $151,000 for Speedway Children’s Charities. The Children’s Champions Grand Marshal’s Banquet generated $95,000, while the 6th annual Race-n-Rock Charity Auction raised $56,000. All proceeds will benefit qualified youth groups in Sonoma County through Speedway Children’s Charities. The Grand Marshal’s Banquet was held on Friday night of race weekend at beautiful Cline Cellars in Sonoma and featured Grand Marshal Guy Fieri form Food Network fame. The sit-down dinner attracted nearly 500 people, including NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Boris Said and J.J. Yeley. “The NASCAR weekend has become our biggest single fund-raising opportunity for Speedway Children’s Charities and we appreciate the generosity of all our sponsors, fans and donors who contributed to this effort,” said Steve Page, president and general manager of Infineon Raceway. The top-selling item at the charity auction, which took place on Sunday at the raceway, was a custom Snap-on Tools toolbox, which netted $8,200. A one-of-a-kind designed helmet by artist David Arrigo was the second top item ($7,200). The helmet featured five-time Infineon Raceway champion Jeff Gordon, who signed it, as well as the 40th anniversary of the raceway. Jimmy Spencer To Be Honored At New Hampshire
As part of a season-long celebration of 60 years of Modified champions, two-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour titlist Jimmy Spencer will be honored at the New England 100 on June 28 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Spencer, who currently works for SPEED TV as a co-host for “NASCAR Raceday” and “NASCAR Victory Lane,” became the first driver to earn back-to-back NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championships in 1986 and 1987. He is one of just three NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers to capture consecutive titles. Although Berwick, Pa., native competed on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for just four years, Spencer left an indelible mark on the division, and the success was immediate. The Modifieds had been part of NASCAR since the very first sanctioned race in 1948, running in countless events up and down the East Coast, and 1985 marked the formation of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Spencer finished third in the inaugural NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway and reached Victory Lane in the fifth event of the season. He wound up with four wins and finished eighth in the season standings. The table was then set for a dominant two year run.
No. 2 Team Test At Mikwaukee
Kurt Busch, Pat Tryson and crew tested yesterday (Tuesday, June 24) at the Milwaukee Mile in preparation for this weekend’s action at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “We’re testing with our brand new (PSC-) 576 car,” Pat explained. “It’s a carbon copy of the (PSC-) 574 that we’ll be racing at Loudon (NHMS) this weekend. Hopefully we’ll be able to learn some things at Milwaukee that will help us this weekend. Through the years, that’s certainly been the case. There have been many race winners at New Hampshire who have given a lot of credit for the success to the fact that they went to Milwaukee to test.”
Steve Letarte Fills In For Tim Brewer
Steve Letarte, crew chief of the #24 DuPont Chevrolet driven by Jeff Gordon in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will join ESPN’s NASCAR team for coverage of Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Camping World RV Sales 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Letarte will report from the ESPN Tech Center as a fill-in for ESPN analyst and two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion crew chief Tim Brewer, who has the weekend off. Letarte, a native of Maine, has been Gordon’s crew chief since September, 2005, and has been with Hendrick Motorsports for 14 years. During the race, he will work with the ESPN Chevy Cutaway Car and the other parts, pieces and visuals in the Tech Center to illustrate and explain technical aspects of the event. The telecast airs at 2:30 p.m. ET on ABC and in high definition on ABC HD.
Steve Addington Named Best Crew Chief
Steve Addington, crew chief of the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry driven by Kyle Busch, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday’s Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Although the team ended the day victorious, Addington and his crew did not start the weekend off on the right foot. Struggles with car’s set up on Friday led to a qualifying mishap, landing the No. 18 car in the 30th starting position. Sunday was not looking to be very promising for Busch and the No. 18 team, “We were so bad, we didn’t know what was going on,” said Busch post-race, “Addington and the guys worked their tails off and never gave up.” In addition to the $1,000 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week

Interesting Stat - only one Birthday winner: been told that Cale Yarborough is the only Cup driver to ever win a points paying race on his birthday, which is March 27. In 1977 at North Wilksboro Speedway and 1983 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. NOTE, since I got email on it, I will cover a few items, since folks are guessing: Richard Petty never won on his birthday (July 2nd) [in Cup] and neither did Jeff Gordon [August 4th]. In fact, the Brickyard 400 has only been held on Gordon’s birthday once, in 2002, when Bill Elliott won. Gordon’s first Brickyard 400 came on August 6, 1994.(8-6-2004)
Two drivers have birthday’s this Sunday, while Cup races at New Hampshire: #1-Martin Truex Jr. and #31-Jeff Burton.(6-25-2008)
LENOX scheme for Burton at NHMS: LENOX’s associate sponsorship of RCR’s #31 Chevy kicks into high gear this weekend in New Hampshire as Burton and the #31 team transform their bright orange #31 AT&T Chevy into a red, white and blue LENOX racing machine for the LENOX Industrial Tools 301. LENOX produces band saw blades, sawing fluids, hand power tool accessories in over 70 countries around the world. In addition to the added mile in this weekend’s LENOX Industrial Tools 301, LENOX has kicked off their Extra Mile Hero contest where LENOX customers can nominate the hero in their life who have gone the extra mile either in their job or community. The contest winner could receive up to a half a million dollars with a matching gift awarded to their charity of choice. Truex still talking to DEI about contract: #1-Martin Truex Jr. was on the weekly NASCAR teleconference and spoke about his contract situation:
Q. Your name has been thrown up a lot in the garage as far as your future goes – can you give us any indication right now what you’re thinking about for the future?
MARTIN TRUEX, JR.: Way to start it off. You know, I’m not sure. Right now we’re working hard with DEI to put some things together for next year. Really it’s just a lot of – it’s taken a little bit longer than expected for both of us, both sides - on my side and on DEI’s side. We’re just trying to get through the details. For me, it’s just trying to get comfortable and be comfortable in the position I’m in . what they’re doing and the direction they’re headed for the future, so I can make sure that we can be together for a long time.
Q. What are you looking for as far as comfort? Is it the fact that you want race victories? What else are you looking for?
MARTIN TRUEX, JR.: Well, a lot of things. You know, good direction for the future of a championship. I think obviously there are some things going on with our race cars and other teams that I’m not quite sure what’s happened with them. So just a lot of things here and there. The performance hasn’t been as good as it’s been this year for whatever reason. We’ve had an okay season. We’ve run really well at times and we’ve run not so well at times. So we’ve had a lot of bad luck spread throughout the season, especially the beginning part of the year which has got us in this position right now. We really just need to dig deep for now and try to get a win or two before the Chase starts. We really just need to get some points and try to make the Chase and battle for that championship like we did last year.
Q. Do you have a timetable for that decision?
MARTIN TRUEX, JR.: No. But we’re working on it every day, really, so just as soon as we can get it all ironed out.(NASCAR)(6-25-2008)
Chase Notes: With the second year in the 12-team Chase format, more current members of the top 12 are within one race of dropping out than this time last year, 7 to 2. More outside the top 12 are within one race of the top 12, 5 to last year’s 2. Even though there’s 10 long races to go, #17-Matt Kenseth finally made it to the top 12 with his 8th at Infineon. Just five races ago, Kenseth had fallen back to 20th place, but was still only 153 points out. He’s just two ahead of #29-Kevin Harvick, but momentum seems to be with the #17 as they bid to join #48-Jimmie Johnson and the #48 as the only two teams to make all five Chases. Harvick is in a free fall, having dropped four spots and being outscored by Kenseth by 283 points over the last five. Loudon is a good track for the #29 and they desperately need a strong finish. #9-Kasey Kahne fell back from a pole start to a 33rd finish, losing 67 points to 13th place. Hamlin turned in a 27th after a late mishap and lost 54 points. Both are within one race of dropping out of the top 12. Hamlin won the first New Hampshire race last year and a top five Sunday would rejuvenate his team at just the right time. See full chase stas on my Chase Stats after Sonoma page.(6-25-2008) www.jayski.com/stats/2008/chase/16ir2008chase.htm
#17 to carry Celtics decal: In honor of the Boston Celtics 17th NBA title, Matt Kenseth’s #17 DeWalt Ford will carry a special congratulatory decal. The #17 crew will also don pit caps to celebrate the occasion. On Wednesday, June 25, Kenseth along with his Roush Fenway Racing teammates and the Boston Red Sox will celebrate Roush Fenway Day at Fenway Park.(Roush Racing PR)(6-25-2008)
Ford Driven scheme for Kvapil at NHMS: Travis Kvapil will be driving the #28 “Ford Drive one” Ford Fusion for the second time this season when the green flag falls in Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The paint scheme, which encourages consumers to drive any Ford product, debuted at Phoenix in April and finished 22nd.(Ford Racing PR), see an image of the scheme on my #28 Team Schemes page.(6-25-2008) www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/28cup.htm
Ambrose back in the #21 at NHMS: Marcos Ambrose will be in the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion this weekend in Loudon, N.H., attempting to qualify for his second consecutive Cup race. Ambrose, a two-time Australian V8 Supercars champion, made his Sprint Cup debut last weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.(Ford Racing PR)(6-25-2008)

Nemechek Finishes 26th in Sonoma Road Race
SONOMA, Calif. (June 22, 2008) — Joe Nemechek battled to a 26th-place finish in Sunday’s Sprint Cup road race at Infineon Raceway.
The Furniture Row Racing driver, who has always had a fondness for the road courses, overcame some handling issues and an unfortunate timing for a green-flag pit stop.
After starting the scheduled 110-lap race 24th on the 1.99-mile, 11-turn circuit, Nemechek’s No. 78 Chevrolet Impala SS fell back to the low to mid 30s.
“The handling wasn’t quite right in the beginning, but it got much better later in the race,” said Nemechek. “All of the cars were slipping and sliding and I am happy that we kept our four tires out of the dirt.”
As cars were spinning off track and catching the tire barriers, Nemechek’s Chevy Impala stayed on course.
“Jay (Guy, crew chief) and all of the Furniture Row Racing crew were outstanding today,” offered Nemechek. “Jay called a strategic race and the pit stops were solid.”
Nemechek and the No. 78 team fell one-lap down and further back in the field when a caution was called shortly after pitting while the race was running at full speed under green-flag conditions.
“That hurt, but we got the lap back, which gave us the opportunity to start picking off track positions,” explained Nemechek.
Nemechek did improve at the end, moving from the mid 30s to the mid 20s during the final 30 laps.
“I thought our car was really sharp late in the race,” said Nemechek. “Overall this wasn’t a bad day for the Furniture Row Racing team.”
The next stop for Nemechek and the Furniture Row Racing team will be Sunday (June 29) at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon.

21 races at NHMS without repeat winner: Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, five drivers have the chance to break the track’s string of 21 races without a repeat winner. That’s the longest streak among active tracks in NASCAR’s national series and each member of the quintet has some recent momentum that might spur him on to becoming the first to pull the “double.” The 5 drivers are #60-Carl Edwards, #33-Kevin Harvick, #11-Jason Keller, #25-Bobby Hamlilton, Jr., and #28-Kenny Wallace.(NASCAR PR)(6-24-2008)
Loganao gets the week off: Joey Logano is not entered in Saturday’s NNS race at New Hampshire. Kyle Busch will be in the team’s #18 entry, while Denny Hamlin will be in Braun Racing’s #32. Logano is also slated to miss the races at Daytona (where he’s yet to be approved to race by NASCAR) and at Chicagoland. Logano will return to the #20 Camry at Gateway.(ESPN.com)(6-24-2008)

Lawsuit says Christensen’s charity spent funds on campaign, race team: The state attorney general’s office on Tuesday filed a civil suit in Austin charging a Garland anti-drug and low-income housing charity of violating nonprofit rules by squandering its money on its founder’s salary and his political career and supporting a NASCAR racing team. Gene Christensen, who this year unsuccessfully challenged Ralph Hall for his congressional seat, is set to appear at a hearing July 21 in front of an Austin probate judge, who will consider Attorney General Greg Abbott’s request for a temporary injunction and appointment of a receiver for Mr. Christensen’s charity, People Against Drugs Affordable Public Housing. In court papers released Tuesday, the A.G. charges that Mr. Christensen, along with board members John W. Brown, Martin T. Glenn and John Shute, ran their Garland apartment complex in the 1700 block of North Jupiter Road, billed as a drug-free and subsidized rent community, as a regular for-profit apartment complex, charging full rent and offering no drug programs. The A.G.’s office accuses Mr. Christensen and his charity of using the nearly $2 million in annual revenue from the complex to, among other things, finance Green Light Racing, a NASCAR Truck Series team, which is a violation of the Texas Nonprofit Corporation Act.(Dallas Morning News)(6-24-2008)

Mathis has been suspended from NASCAR until July 30 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); and 12-4-F (any member who participates in fights or altercations in the pits or on the race premises) of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rule book. Mathis was involved in a June 14 pre-race altercation with track security officials.(NASCAR PR)(6-24-2008)

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Rick Crawford has reached an agreement in principal to buy the half-mile track, according to Doug Carwyle, a local businessman who helped broker the deal. The only stipulation to the sale is that the city of Montgomery grant a license allowing the track to hold races. Kevin Radvany, who handles public relations for Crawford’s race team, said track representatives will make the request with the city licensing board July 17. “Outside of that one thing, it’s a done deal,” said Carwyle, who is expected to help manage the track once Crawford takes ownership. “Rick and (current owner) Bill Manfull have agreed on the price. Rick sent the retainer — $50,000 — to the auction company. All that’s left is getting that license. If that happens, we go back racing.” Carwyle said Crawford, a Mobile native who is currently fifth in the Craftsman Truck Series points standings, has been involved in the sale of MMS since the auction a month ago. Radvany said Crawford’s purchase of the track would have no effect on his participation in the Truck Series. “This is no different than Tony Stewart owning Eldora Speedway (a small dirt track in Ohio),” Radvany said. “This is something Rick has always said he wanted to do.”(Montgomery Advertiser)(6-24-2008)
Willie Allen, will make his first truck series start of the 2008 season this Saturday at the O’Reilly 200 in Memphis. Allen will pilot the #46 Chev for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports with primary sponsorship being provided by Grammy award winning, multi-platinum recording artists Rascal Flatts. The Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau and Kerrville, Texas based Lowery Plumbing will serve as associate sponsors on the #46 entry. The event will be a reunion of sorts for Allen and Morgan-Dollar Motorsports. Allen entered his very first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event in a Morgan-Dollar Chevrolet at Martinsville in 2005 and drove his way to a 6th place finish.(Willie Allen/Modern Mgmt. PR)(6-24-2008)

Benson Tames Truckers
06-22-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Johnny Benson did exactly what you’d expect him to do Friday night at The Milwaukee Mile: Win the Camping World RV Sales 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. Benson led 130 of 200 laps in his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra to capture his third consecutive victory at the flat one-mile Wisconsin oval, but it wasn’t necessarily as easy as it looked. Benson needed a great pit stop by his Bill Davis Racing crew on his final pit stop at Lap 148 to propel him to the front and a lead he would never surrender.

NASCAR - Why not Ethanol?
by Allen Madding
What Time is It? GAME TIME!
I think any athlete will tell you that they have a specific routine they go through on game days in order to be mentally and physically prepared. They eat certain foods, have a certain schedule, and do certain warmup activities. NASCAR is no different. The drivers have their rituals, as do the pit crew guys. I know that when my routine is disrupted for whatever reason, I don’t feel quite right when I step off for my first stop of the day.

So You Want to Work in NASCAR?
NASCAR operates unlike almost any other sport in the world today. It is people dependent industry and for the thousands who keep the circus running week to week a job in the sport can be one of the most exciting, frustrating things they will ever do.
