Good morning. Welcome to another Monday, or as I’ve heard it called “Moan”day. If you’re breathing, it ought to be a good day regardless of which day of the week it is.
There will not be a Stock Car Gazette tomorrow (Tuesday), as my wife is having outpatient surgery. Your prayers are much appreciated.
Let’s get to the stock car racing news, including results of this past weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series, and Craftsman Truck Series racing, right here in today’s Stock Car Gazette.

Kyle Busch Wins At Infineon
Kyle Busch picked up his fifth Sprint Cup victory on Sunday in the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Busch started 30th on the grid and worked his way to the front, taking the lead on lap 69, using a combination of pit strategy, luck and talent to earn his ninth career win and his fifth victory this year. It was the first win for Busch in Sprint Cup competition on a road course in seven tries. Busch gave Toyota and Joe Gibbs racing it’s sixth victory in the 2008 season. Busch has won a total of eleven races this year, in all three series, the Sprint Cup, The Nationwide and the Craftsman Truck Series. Busch extended his lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standing to 109 over Jeff Burton and 149 markers over Dale Earnhardt Jr. Busch is earning a reputation of being able to win on any type of track, his other victories were at Atlanta, Darlington, Talladega and Dover.
“We got a slow start. The car just did not take off with restarts. It was way, way too loose and that hurt us,” Busch said. “Then on long runs we were really good. Once we burned some fuel, we had a good, strong car. Unfortunately, we were mired in traffic all day. Then we missed our pit window and a lot of the guys pitted right when the caution came out — the lap of or the lap before. That put us back in even further traffic. Staying out of trouble there at the end of the race and surviving those cautions was able to have us leave here with a solid day.”
As luck would have it, Scott Pruett wrecked on lap 105 of 110, setting up a green-white-checkers situation. Busch held off a hungry David Gilliland and a beleaguered, but lucky Jeff Gordon. Clint Bowyer finished in the fourth spot with Casey Mears in tow for fifth place. Rounding out the top ten were Juan Montoya, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart.
The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule is the June 29th Lennox Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race begins at 12:30 PM. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by TNT beginning with its pre-race show at 12:00 PM. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

DEI could cut back to 3 teams in 2009: Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s Vice President of Motorsports Operations John Story said Sunday morning at Infineon Raceway that the team … is still looking for a sponsor for the #01 Chevy driven by Regan Smith. If no sponsor is found, Story said, the team will cut back to three cars.(SPEEDtv.com)(6-23-2008)
Roush Fenway hopes to have drivers locked in soon for ’09: Roush Fenway Racing hopes to soon solidify its current driver lineup in the same positions for 2009, team president Geoff Smith said Sunday at Infineon Raceway. The first item would be locking in #16-Greg Biffle, who said Friday he expects to complete the deal this week. As far as #6-David Ragan, Smith also was optimistic. “We’re working through a final contract now with a sponsor, and unless Tony Stewart puts a wheel under us [in his sponsorship quest], it should be over very shortly,” Smith said. The team’s other three drivers – #99-Carl Edwards, #26-Jamie McMurray and #17-Matt Kenseth – are already signed for next season. Roush Fenway Racing can have five teams in 2009 but will have to cut down to four for the 2010 season.(SceneDaily.com)(6-23-2008)
Martin to Leave DEI, Almirola Full Time Next Season: UPDATE: Martin Replacing Mears? Mark Martin will have a new racing home in 2009, ESPN.com has learned. Martin was unavailable for comment Sunday. Officials for Martin’s current team, Dale Earnhardt Inc., would neither confirm nor deny the speculation, but did confirm that young Aric Almirola would run a full-time schedule in 2009. “Aric is ready for a full-time ride,” said John Story, DEI vice president of motorsports operations. Almirola has shared the #8 U.S. Army Chevy with Martin for the past two seasons. “Were talking to Mark about what his objectives for the future are, and trying to marry that with our own, with Aric Almirola, to make sure Aric has an opportunity to run full time next year. We’re going through the process right now of trying to make sure that we get something for Aric that provides him a 36-race schedule, and at the same time that Mark is in a good situation.”(ESPN.com)(6-22-2008)
UPDATE: Casey Mears and Mark Martin look to be on the move, and their futures might be linked. Mears’ future with Hendrick Motorsports appears in jeopardy, ESPN.com has learned. Although Mears has one year left on his contract, team owner Rick Hendrick would not commit to the driver of the #5 car beyond this season. “I’m committed to him right now,” Hendrick said on Sunday at Infineon Raceway. “I’m committed to him making that car run better right now.” Earlier on Sunday, sources told ESPN.com that Martin would leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. Later, ESPN.com learned that he would replace Mears, making one last full-time run at a championship.(ESPN.com)(6-22-2008)
