Interview with Earnhardt, Jr, Rick Hendrick, Tony Eury, Jr
THE MODERATOR: This is your 18th victory in 306 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts, your first win since Richmond 2006. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about your run today. DALE EARNHARDT, JR: Well, we started to race out we started out the race pretty good. Had about a Top 5 car, and [...]

Several drivers upset Dale Jr passed the pace car
Several drivers were upset that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was allowed to speed up and pass the pace car during a caution so he could save gas to make it to the finish line. The running start gave Earnhardt enough momentum to allow him to turn his engine off and coast halfway around Michigan International Speedway. “I [...]

Reality: Dale Jr broke the rules and got away with it, but so have others
Now that it’s all over, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has the checkered flag, has the trophy and we know darn certain that NASCAR doesn’t go back and take victories away from Sprint Cup Series winners, lets ask the question. Isn’t it against the rules to pass the pace car under caution? And if its not, wouldn’t a driver [...]

Actress/Singer Nikki Blonsky Set to Perform National Anthem at NASCAR Weekend: Actress/singer Nikki Blonsky, best known for her Golden Globe-nominated role in Hairspray, a 2007 big-screen adaptation of the highly-popular stage musical, will perform the national anthem at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, June 22. Blonsky, a New York native, was honored at the 13th annual Critics’ Choice Awards for her role as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray in 2007 (Best Young Actress). Blonsky, along with Queen Latifah, Amanda Byrnes, Zac Efron, Brittany Snow, Allison Janney, and Elijah Kelley, also won Best Acting Ensemble. “I’m very excited and honored to be performing the national anthem. It will be my first-ever NASCAR race and I couldn’t think of a more scenic setting than the Sonoma Valley,” Blonsky said. “I’ve heard so much about NASCAR; I can’t wait to get out there and experience it for myself.” Blonsky, 19, has also worked with rock musician Duncan Sheik on a number of tracks, with her first single, “On a High,” featured in the 2008 Lifetime Original Movie, Queen Sized, in which she also starred. Blonsky also covered the Disney classic, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” for “DisneyMania6”, which was released in May. - Infineon Raceway, Press Release

Busch Dumps Nationwide Series
After crashing in Saturday night’s Nationwide Series race at the Kentucky Speedway, Kyle Busch has given up on plans to compete full-time in two different NASCAR series. Busch will race only at Infineon Raceway next week at Sonoma, Calif., and not jet across the country to compete in the Nationwide race on Saturday at Milwaukee.

Heat Becomes A Problem?
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin said that he is concerned about the heat in the new model Sprint Cup car, though he believes NASCAR is addressing the issue. After competing at Pocono Raceway last weekend, Hamlin discussed how hot he was in his car. He says that he didn’t get any temperature readings inside the car but that NASCAR is going to begin doing some testing to try to get a handle on the issue. “It’s an issue that NASCAR is going to address, and they’ve already started doing it here, testing six or seven of us on our [carbon monoxide] levels before and after practice,” Hamlin said. “They’re going to do it after final practice and then again after the race to see what’s going on with it. They’ve already taken steps in the right direction. Us as a race team has got to get better with our ventilation as well.” Hamlin says that he believes NASCAR’s new car is hotter than the old model used to be and relates that to the way the exhaust is run in the cars.

Army looking for new team in 2009? The U.S. Army is examining it options for 2009 and beyond, and could leave Dale Earnhardt, Inc., for another team. The Army sponsorship is a year-by-year affair, and is renegotiated at the end of each season for the next year. Sources close to the situation tell Sirius Speedway that while the Army could still return to the DEI camp next season, officials are talking to at least one other Sprint Cup Series team, including one from the Toyota camp. Mark Martin has steered the US Army Chevrolet to a pair of Top-5 and five Top-10 finishes this season, and stands 24th in points despite running only 12 of the 15 races to date. Aric Almirola has made the other three starts in the car, with one Top-10 finish.(Motorsports Soapbox)(6-17-2008)

Another F-1 driver attends Cup race: Formula One Toyota driver Jarno Trulli snuck into Michigan International Speedway on Sunday without the fan crush he’s accustomed to when he races in Europe. “A few people asked me for autographs when I first arrived but it basically cooled down,” Trulli said. “In Italy or France, you would basically be surrounded.” Trulli, an Italian, competed in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal this month, where he finished sixth, and decided to stick around and pay a surprise visit to former F1 drivers Juan Pablo Montoya (Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates) and Scott Speed (Bill Davis Racing), who are running in NASCAR. “They were the first two people I visited with,” Trulli said. “They were surprised to see me.” Trulli, eighth in F1 points, said he watches NASCAR on television, but Sunday’s was the first stock car race he’d attended. Would he take a crack at ovals if given a chance? “Maybe one day — a test or something,” said Trulli, who began his F1 career with Minardi in 1997. “I like the U.S. and having another (racing) experience would be good.” Though Trulli has never raced a stock car, he drove at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., in 1994. “I competed in the Race of the Americas karting series in 1994 and 1995 on the road course at Charlotte,” Trulli recalled. “I finished first and second.”(Detroit Free Press)(6-17-2008)

Others who felt that #20-Tony Stewart’s fifth-place effort at Michigan served as a win were those in Stewart’s hometown of Columbus, Ind. The area was ravaged by flooding last weekend, and Stewart’s portion of the $136,986 [approx 40%] he earned by finishing fifth in the LifeLock 400 will be donated to the American Red Cross in Columbus, with the money specified for flood assistance. Those wishing to join Stewart in helping those affected by the floods throughout Indiana can call 812-379-9551 or send checks payable to The American Red Cross, 931 Repp Drive, Columbus, IN 47201. If writing a check, write “Indiana Flood & Tornado Relief” on the memo line. “I’m happy we got a top-five for everyone in Columbus, Indiana, and that we can do something to help our community out,” Stewart said. “It’s been on my mind all weekend. That’s what this top-five is for. When it’s your own community and your own neighbors, it’s good to generate a good amount of winnings for them.”(True Speed Communication/JGR)(6-17-2008)

Lawyer behind discrimination suit talks: But Benedict Morelli — the lawyer for Mauricia Grant in the $225 million discrimination lawsuit against NASCAR — took note that there was one other intriguing headline over the weekend: Nationwide Series officials Tim Knox and Bud Moore [NOT the former car owner Walter "Bud" Moore, who owned the #15 Ford and others for years with 63 wins] were both suspended, with pay, for what the sport’s CEO, Brian France, called “violations in NASCAR policy.” France didn’t give specifics on what prompted the action while defending his company on Saturday, but both are accused in the lawsuit of exposing themselves to Grant — an African-American co-worker of theirs who was fired in October 2007. In a 45-minute interview with SI.com before those suspensions, Morelli shared some of his thoughts on the case. “I look at this as an opportunity [for NASCAR],” he said from his offices in Manhattan. “There are a number of things that have to go on. NASCAR ultimately has to pay a lot of money — but they have to do more than that. They have to try to legitimately change the culture. In a lot of ways, a lawsuit like this could benefit them if they make the necessary changes.” Morelli says his client is willing to take a stand, and knows it will be a long fight. Popular gamble: Earnhardt Jr. stretches fuel to win at Michigan, end drought By SceneDaily Staff
BROOKLYN, Mich. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. played the fuel-mileage game and won. And he snapped a 76-race winless streak in the process. NASCAR’s most popular driver drove the final 55 laps of Sunday’s LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway on one tank of fuel while most of the frontrunners were forced in for a splash in the final laps. That led to his first victory with Hendrick Motorsports.

THIRD ANNUAL NASCAR DRIVER DEVELOPMENT CLINIC ANNOUNCED

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Mike Calinoff’s third annual NASCAR Driver Development Clinic is officially scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Fitz Motorsports in Mooresville, N.C.

The clinic is a seven-hour informational session split into three segments – Driver Development, Mastering the Media, and Grassroots Sponsorship. Each segment will feature its own list of distinguished panelists specific to the field.

An all-star lineup of NASCAR drivers including Kyle Busch, David Stremme, Reed Sorenson, and Bryan Clauson have already been confirmed as panelists. Driver development representatives from NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series, and Craftsman Truck Series teams will be featured as panelists in addition to distinguished media, marketing, and business management specialists.

Calinoff is a NASCAR spotter who has spotted for Matt Kenseth, David Stremme, and currently Dario Franchitti. He has been organizing motorsports seminars and clinics for nearly 10 years.

The Driver Development Clinic was conceived to help educate young drivers and their families as to what the proper and necessary steps are in advancing their careers. The clinic provides answers to the questions many aspiring racers and their families have, both through seminar sessions and personal conversation with the panelists.

In past years, the clinic has attracted young drivers currently racing in nearly all forms of motorsports including late models, modifieds, sprint cars, midgets, legends cars, go-karts, and quarter midgets – both dirt and asphalt.

The price for attending this year’s clinic is $300 per person (parent or driver). A complimentary lunch is offered and refreshments will be available throughout the day. Registration opens at 8 a.m. while the first seminar begins at 10 a.m.

Additional panelists will be named at a later date.

For more information, contact (704) 664-1755 or visit www.driverdevelopmentclinic.com.

NASCAR Fans Love Baseball
Diverse and Surprising Leisure Preferences Revealed in Study of Single NASCAR Enthusiasts by Meetmeattheraces.com

FORT LEE, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Surprise! Single NASCAR fans prefer Baseball to some other motor-sports including Indy Car, and Motorcycle races.

A study conducted by www.meetmeattheraces.com, the free singles dating website catering to the nation’s 75-million NASCAR enthusiasts and those who want to meet them, also showed a strong affinity for concerts, movies, nightclubs and travel.

The study examined multiple leisure preferences indicated by a sampling of more than 400 single men and women from 42 states who joined meetmeattheraces.com between Valentine’s Day and June 8, 2008.

Sports car races selected by 60% of the members, was the preferred motor-sport after NASCAR. However, meetmeattheraces.com members enjoy Baseball (33%) more than Indy Car races (28%), Motorcycle races (28%), Motocross (23%) and American Le Mans races (10%). Cooking is a favorite activity of 46% of the NASCAR fans belonging to meetmeattheraces.com while concerts and movies are preferred by 57% of the members. Travel and sightseeing are preferred by 53%.

Traditional outdoor leisure activities are also popular with singles. Camping was selected by 49% as a preferred activity while 42% selected fishing and hunting.

Not hot with single NASCAR fans are skiing (9%) and snowmobiling (10%). In fact, Arts and Museums rated more highly (14%) than winter sports. Politics rank near the bottom with only 8% expressing interest.

“The survey reveals that NASCAR fans are multi-dimensional with diverse interests that make them stimulating companions,” said Steve Agins, owner of Meetmeattheraces.com. “Other singles may find compatibility with enthusiasts sharing many other interests even if NASCAR racing isn’t familiar to them. For many, an ideal first date is a walk in the park or a barbeque, rather than spending money in an expensive nightclub. Of course the perfect first date according to our members is to attend a NASCAR race or watch one on television with a companion who shares their interests.”
