Racism and NASCAR
by: Chuck Abrams
Another possible black eye for NASCAR are the allegations of racist remarks made to a female former NASCAR official.
Brian France has claimed that she was let go due to performance issues and not because she was a woman of color. He also says that he never heard of any of these allegations before and that the woman did not go through the normal corporate procedures for filing a complaint.
Brian – wrong thing to say, dude.

Flagging economy keeps MIS fans at home
In August 2005, the stands were packed and the infield full at Michigan International Speedway, marking the track’s 30th consecutive sellout. Since then, attendance has dipped slightly, but in a crowd of more than 130,000 it can be hard to notice. What’s easier to visualize are the 91,000 fewer workers in Michigan since that August race — [...]

NASCAR To Investigate Allegations
NASCAR announced Wednesday it would conduct an investigation into allegations levied in a $225 (million) federal lawsuit by former official Mauricia Grant. Grant said Wednesday that she followed the chain of command in the Busch Series to lodge her complaints and she never reached out to the human resources department because two weeks after her complaining to Balash, she got a call from human resources reprimanding her for poor performance. “I expected for Joe Balash to address and solve the problem,” Grant said. “I never expected I would have to take it higher than that. … The shock of getting a call from HR two weeks later, it was so obvious a retaliation to me, I was like, ‘Am I supposed to open my mouth and call HR back and just like list the things that I needed to talk about?’

Forbes Rates the Most Valuable Teams In NASCAR: There’s a widening gulf in NASCAR between stock car racing’s biggest, most valuable teams and those hoping to hang on for just one more race. Since our first NASCAR valuation package two years ago, values have rocketed skyward, up 65% on average, to $119 million, thanks to a rash of investment in a sport whose radical growth over the past decade appears to be sputtering.
The top-five MVT’s are: Hendrick Motorsports at $335 million; Roush Fenway Racing $313 million; Joe Gibbs Racing $184 million; Gillett Evernham Motorsports $150 million; and Richard Childress Racing $130 million
The top-five higest paid drivers listed by Forbes: 1. Jeff Gordon: $32 million; 2. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: $31 million; 3. Jimmie Johnson: $23 million; 4. Tony Stewart: $19 million; and 5. Kasey Kahne: $14 million.

DuPont, Customers to Help Rebuild Town Leveled by Tornado: DuPont and #24-Jeff Gordon announced that DuPont will partner with customers and make an initial donation of more than 30 innovative products and services worth nearly $750,000 to help rebuild homes and businesses in tornado-ravaged Greensburg, Kan. The donation also includes funding for two Habitat for Humanity homes. The town was leveled by one of the largest tornados in U.S. history in 2007. Very few structures remained in the aftermath of the deadly EF5 tornado and more than 1,500 people, who were displaced, are waiting to return to their homes. Greensburg residents are rebuilding their town using sustainable materials. The materials, which include key end-use products from DuPont customers, will provide a number of benefits to homeowners in Greensburg for safety and energy efficiency, using sustainable materials for both inside and outside their homes. Greensburg will premiere on Planet Green on June 15 at 9:00pm/et/pt and will air every Sunday for 12 additional weeks. The series will document the story of a community coming together and the enormous scope of rebuilding a small city. The 13-part series also is the subject of featured programming on the Discovery Communications, Inc. sister networks Discovery Channel, Science Channel and TLC.(PRPLUS PR)(6-13-2008)

Stewart to help out hometown flood victims: When #20-Tony Stewart returned to his hometown of Columbus, Ind., late Sunday night after the race at Pocono. There, Stewart, a 1989 graduate of Columbus North High School saw his town under water. With people displaced and many homes severely damaged if not destroyed, Stewart quickly found a new perspective on true sorrow and disappointment. On Monday, he visited the Columbus Public Works garage and thanked all those who had been working around the clock to help restore the town’s infrastructure. He also stopped by his old junior high school, which the American Red Cross had converted into a shelter for flood evacuees. There, Stewart chatted with those who had to call the gymnasium floor their temporary home, and allowed them a short distraction from the headaches and worry that came when rising flood waters significantly altered their lives. There were so many stories of hardship, Stewart wondered where to even start. The answer: Sunday’s LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Whatever Stewart’s portion of the race winnings are in the LifeLock 400, he’ll donate them to the American Red Cross in Columbus, with the money specified for flood assistance. Those wishing to join Stewart in helping those affected by the floods throughout Indiana can call 812-379-9551 or send checks payable to The American Red Cross, 931 Repp Drive, Columbus, IN 47201. If writing a check, write “Indiana Flood & Tornado Relief” on the memo line. How is your home in Columbus? “My old house by the high school is good. The farm is just wet, absolutely saturated. You can’t get on it. You can’t do anything. And we’re getting baby deer now. We have four little ones, and we’ve got them on the deck in a small pen because you can’t get on the ground to put them anywhere. They’re so young, you don’t want them to get stuck.”(True Speed Communication/JGR PR)(6-13-2008)
MIS making improvements to current outbound traffic pattern following LifeLock 400: After making huge strides to improve traffic following the June 2007 Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway, the Irish Hills track is making a few improvements to the current outbound pattern, which will continue to help fans exit the facility in a timely manner. The following changes will occur to the already existing outbound traffic pattern following the LifeLock 400 Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, June 15.
1. M-50 south from US-12 will be one-way to Onsted Highway.
2. Traffic at Vicary Road and US-127 will only be allowed to go North on US-127. (No left turn).
3. A 12′ paved shoulder on US-127 north from Vicary Road to M-50 has been finished and will be used for post-race traffic on June 15.
Additionally, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend work and reopen lanes on several major state highways, including US-127, north of Jackson, and US-12 near Jonesville, for the LifeLock 400 on June 15.
Overall, work on state roads in counties surrounding MIS, which is located in Jackson County, will be suspended starting Thursday, June 12, at 7 a.m., until Tuesday, June 17, at 7 a.m.
To assist motorists and race fans, MDOT is posting MIS race day travel information on the web, including maps and information about statewide construction projects, changes to the outbound traffic pattern, and links to the web site of WRIF (101.1 FM), the number one source of traffic at MIS. Motorists can find information online at: www.michigan.gov/mdot or www.michigan.gov/drive.(MIS PR)(6-13-2008)
Long Pond Road section renamed for owners of Pocono Raceway: Part of the old Long Pond Road has a new name. This week the General Assembly voted to designate the portion of Long Pond Road fronting Pocono Raceway as Dr. Joseph Mattioli and Dr. Rose Mattioli Drive in honor of the Mattioli family, owners and operators of the track. Dr. Joseph Mattioli and Dr. Rose Mattioli Drive runs from the intersection at Route 115 east to the intersection of Stony Hollow Road. There are no homes on the 1½-mile span, so no one will need to give the post office an address change. Soon, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will install signs — they’ll have be to long ones — at each end of Dr. Joseph Mattioli and Dr. Rose Mattioli Drive. The Mattioli’s have owned and operated Pocono Raceway since 1968. Pocono Raceway is one of only three family-owned racetracks [Indy is one, but Dover, while not owned by ISC or SMI, is owned by a Corp, not a family] left on the Sprint Cup Series circuit. The raceway has hosted two NASCAR series races, the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500, every season since 1982.(Pocono Record)(6-12-2008)

Randy Moss starting truck team: UPDATE 2 Buying into Morgan-Dollar? During the prerace report on Speed/TV at Kansas Speedway, Rick Allen reported that New England Patriot wide-receiver Randy Moss is starting a new truck team with plans to race toward the end of the year. A formal announcement is expected some time next week.(4-26-2008)
UPDATE: Fresh off a record breaking NFL season, New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss announced today the formation of Moss Motorsports, LLC with its intended participation to begin in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Moss anticipates that the team will debut at some point in the second half of the 2008 season and run selected races through the conclusion of the year. The partial schedule is a prelude to a full-time campaign in 2009. Sponsors and manufacturer alignments will be announced at a later date. Moss is a ten year veteran in the National Football League and was a first-round draft pick in the 1998 draft out of Marshall University. He has been a NASCAR fan for several years including sponsorship of a local dirt track program and recently made the decision to get involved with the ownership of a NASCAR team. He is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the Urban Youth Racing School and furthers his youth advocacy while holding the same honor with American Youth Football. A major component of the Moss Motorsports program will be the continued involvement and support of youth programs. “There are a lot of NASCAR fans in the locker room,” Moss said. “We’ve seen a lot of football players get involved – guys like Dan Marino and Troy Aikman to name a couple. I think it’s a good fit and gives some of the companies I am already working with an additional outlet. It’s a smart move on the marketing side of things but on the personal side of things I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Randy has kick started his efforts by contracting with Integrity Sports Marketing, LLC – a leading motorsports marketing company in NASCAR. “We know it takes time to build a team from the ground up, and we have some good people working with us to get that process started,” Moss said. “We are talking to the manufacturers, and we’re already evaluating some drivers. Eventually I’d like to be able to have our team work with some of the young guys that are working hard to make it up the ladder, but right now it might make more sense to find a driver with a lot of experience to get us started. But we really don’t have anyone in mind. We’ll look at who is available and find someone that can help us compete and win as quickly as we can.” Moss believes Moss Motorsports will give his current marketing partners another avenue to gain exposure and will open doors for new companies that want to work with him. “The companies I already work with now have a chance to get some exposure to another group of dedicated sports fans,” Moss said. “And we’ll have an opportunity to build some relationships with an entirely new group of companies as well. We’ll have a chance to do some pretty cool things between the football side and the racing side. That’s a part of the equation that most of the other teams don’t have, so we already have a competitive advantage over them. Once we get everything in place we look forward to competing on the race track too.”(Integrity Sports Marketing/Moss Motorsports PR)(4-29-2008)
UPDATE 2: Hearing that NFL Player Randy Moss has bought into Morgan-Dollar Motorsports and the team will be renamed Randy Moss Motorsports. No idea when this will be announced.(6-12-2008)

Roush Tough to Beat at Michigan
06-12-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend for the Cool City Customs 200, race No. 10 of 25 for the series in 2008. Michigan is a wide 2-mile oval beloved by drivers for its multiple grooves and relatively few cautions. It’s also a fast track — Kyle Busch set the qualifying record here last year at 181.612 miles per hour. Most of all, though MIS is the home track for Roush Fenway Racing and a place where the Ford squad is every bit as dominant as, say, Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets are at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. With Roush Industries based in nearby Livonia, Mich., this is a weekend that team co-owner Jack Roush circles on his calendar every year
