Petty to re-sign Labonte, announce merger deal
www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlines/cup/06/10/petty.enterprises.merger/index.html
Petty Enterprises on Wednesday will announce the re-signing of driver Bobby Labonte and that a Massachusetts-based private equity firm has purchased controlling interest in the organization during a press conference at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, sources have told NASCAR.COM. Labonte, 44, has been the driver of the team’s flagship No. 43 car since 2006. The Petty team also needs a sponsor for Labonte’s vehicle, given that current backer General Mills is leaving to sponsor a fourth Sprint Cup entry at Richard Childress Racing for next season. It was unclear whether a sponsor announcement is part of Wednesday’s program. That may hinge on the forthcoming agreement with Boston Ventures, a private equity firm that has been negotiating to buy part of the Petty organization. In 2003 NASCAR team owner Richard Childress used a similar agreement with another equity firm, New York-based Chartwell Investments, to raise capital that helped him turn his team into one of the sport’s best, with all three of his drivers currently ranked in the circuit’s top 11 in points.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hosts 100th Episode of XM Radio Show “Dale Jr. Unrestricted” on June 12: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will host the 100th episode of his XM Satellite Radio show “Dale Jr. Unrestricted” on June 12. The show airs Thursdays during NASCAR season at 7:30 pm ET/4:30 pm PT on the XM Sports Nation channel (XM 144). Encores air on XM at various times through the weekend. For show number one hundred, Earnhardt and his friend and co-host Josh Snider will do their weekly round-up of the latest NASCAR news, and they will talk with professional golfer Boo Weekley, who recently won the Verizon Heritage tournament for the second year in a row. “The show is something we look forward to doing every week,” Earnhardt said. “It’s hard to believe that we’ve done a hundred shows, but it’s more fun than we ever thought it would be.” The first episode of “Dale Jr. Unrestricted” premiered on XM on February 13, 2006. - XM Satellite Radio, Press Release

Jack Roush To Participate In Flyover This Saturday Before The Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway: Jack Roush, owner of Roush Fenway Racing, is an avid vintage airplane buff, and he has been invited to participate in the flyover this Saturday before the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway. “The only other flyover I’ve done over a sporting event was at Nashville five years ago when they had the big Mustang convention there. It was not a race, but a Mustang convention that involved some activities on the race track. But, this will be a great honor for me to celebrate the military and to remember all the veterans and flyover at the conclusion of the National Anthem, in my hometown, as it were. It’s going to be fun to do that. And, I’ve got to make some phone calls; rather than do a one-ship, it would be my intention if I can organize it to do a four-ship, so I’ve got to see if I can scare up three friends with T-6’s in the area who are the trainers to flyover with my P-51.” HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD AN INTEREST IN AVIATION, OR IS THAT SOMETHING THAT CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN MOTORSPORTS? “It’s always been something that I’ve been interested in. As a youngster I built balsawood model airplanes, first with rubber bands for power and then later with little nitro-burning engines for power. I designed my own airplanes and built them from kits just as I grew into to being an adolescent, I was very active in pursuing that interest. And then of course, in the ’80s when I was road racing real hard, I had a chance - or excuse or the reason - to have a corporate airplane to fly around, as I do today, and then that really got me started with personal aviation as far as being a pilot.” - PCGCampbell For Ford Racing, Press Release

Former NASCAR Official Sues
As an aspiring racing official, Mauricia Grant had grown used to working in a man’s world. When she finally made it into NASCAR, Grant was appalled at the way she says she was treated beginning from her first day on the job until her firing last October. Now she’s suing NASCAR for $225 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination. “I loved it. It was a great, exciting, adrenaline-filled job where I worked with fast cars and the best drivers in the world,” Grant told The Associated Press. “But there was an ongoing daily pattern (of harassment). It was the nature of the people I worked with, the people who ran it, it trickled down from the top. “It’s just the way things are in the garage.”

The 32-year-old Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until her termination. In the lawsuit, she alleged she was referred to as “Nappy Headed Mo” and “Queen Sheba,” by co-workers, was often told she worked on “colored people time,” and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan. In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, lists 23 specific incidents of alleged sexual harassment and 34 specific incidents of alleged racial and gender discrimination beginning when she was hired in January 2005 thru her October 2007 firing. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the organization had not yet reviewed the suit

from a Michael Waltrip Racing PR - There is a rumor that reports MWR has fallen on tough times and may go away. Is that true? Waltrip says, “I fancy myself as being a friend to one of the Web sites that is reporting that. But I have to say that the rumor is probably one of the most ridiculous things I have read on the internet. We are probably on as good of footing financially as anyone in the garage area. We are focused on the future. When you are a new team, a lot of times there is turnover. There is reorganization. That is what is going on at MWR and will continue to happen until we hit our stride. We are not in any peril as being reported. We are very into what we are doing and what we need to do to be successful.”(MWR PR)(6-10-2008)

On Wednesday, Petty Enterprises will announce that Boston Ventures, a private equity firm, has acquired controlling interest in the 60-year-old racing operation which has produced 10 NASCAR champions but struggled to remain competitive the last two decades. Richard Petty will remain involved at a high level, but David Zucker, 45, will assume the role of CEO according to David Hovis, a spokesman for Petty Enterprises. Hovis also said it will also be announced that veteran driver Bobby Labonte has agreed to a four-year extension. Labonte will continue to drive for what is expected to remain a two-car Cup team for 2009. Until March, Zucker had been CEO of Midway Games, a Chicago-based producer of video games. In 2002, Zucker was named president and CEO of Playboy Enterprises. From 1988-1999 he was with the Walt Disney Corp., becoming executive vice president at ESPN. He also served as director of ESPN International, overseeing international operations. Petty said the initial deal is to run two cars but indicated he’d like to have a third Cup team running full time by 2010. Sponsorship, however, remains an issue. The team is losing its primary sponsor of the Labonte’s #43 car. General Mills, to Richard Childress Racing next year. Hovis said a fourth component of the deal will be announced at a Wednesday press conference.(USA Today)(6-10-2008)

Petty announcement on SPEED: SPEED will interrupt regularly scheduled programming Wednesday at 11am/et to bring viewers live coverage of the Petty Enterprises press conference from the Lowe’s Motor Speedway media center. Hosted by Kyle Petty, the press conference will address the future of the organization, introducing a new CEO and offering a driver lineup and sponsor packages for 2009 and beyond.

Same sponsor for the Labonte brothers at MIS: both Petty Enterprises will run similar paint schemes in the Lifelock 400 at Michigan International Speedway with #43-Bobby Labonte and #45 Terry Labonte running Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil schemes. Terry Labonte comments: “It’s going to be cool to wear the Marathon colors this week, especially with this being close to their home in Findlay, Ohio. My brother, Bobby, and I are both running the Marathon colors. Our paint schemes will be mirrored. It will be easy for our dad to find us on Sunday. It has been a few years since I raced on Father’s Day weekend. Sharing the track with my brother will make it special.”(Petty Racing PR), see images of the scheme on my #43 Team Schemes page and #45 Team Schemes page.(6-11-2008)

Cup Series Drivers Complete Test at Infineon Raceway: Six Sprint Cup Series drivers completed a one-day test session on Tuesday at Infineon Raceway in advance of the Toyota/Save Mart 350, June 20-22. For one of the drivers, it was a return to familiar surroundings, albeit in a different type of racecar. #77-Sam Hornish Jr. posted a career-best finish of fifth in three IndyCar Series starts in the Sonoma Valley. Getting behind the wheel of a NASCAR stock car may be a different story. “I’ve driven around this track before, but I’ve never seen this track configuration, so it’s different,” said Hornish, who tested in a Penske Racing Nationwide Series car. “Any track that I really liked in IndyCar, I don’t seem to like in the stock car, so I’m trying to treat this like I’m coming out here for the first time. We’ll see if that helps.” Other drivers at the test included: #28-Travis Kvapil; #21-Marcos Ambrose; #96-J.J. Yeley; #6-David Ragan; and #38-David Gilliland. Yeley, Ragan, Ambrose and Kvapil tested in GT America stock cars supplied by Pioneer Motorsports out of Lake Oroville (outside Sacramento), while Gilliland piloted a NASCAR Camping World Series West car. For Ambrose, it was the first time he stepped foot on the Sonoma Valley facility. He is a regular in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Unlike Ambrose, Gilliland has had plenty of success at Infineon Raceway, winning the NASCAR Southwest Series event in 2004, and the Camping World Series West race in 2007. Gilliland’s NASCAR Cup debut also came in Sonoma in 2006. For ticket information on the Toyota/Save Mart 350, June 20-22, call 800-870-RACE or visit www.infineonraceway.com.(Infineon Raceway PR)(6-11-2008)

Special schemes for the #40 and #42 at MIS: This weekend, the Wrigley’s Brand’s will rev up the new Juicy Fruit and Big Red Slim Pack, sleek 15-stick envelope packages that are more durable and portable. New Slim Pack paint schemes on the Big Red and Juicy Fruit Dodges as well as the new Slim Pack television commercials will air and will run throughout the race on TNT. Juan Pablo Montoya’s #42 Dodge will feature Big Red, while his teammate Dario Franchitti will carry the Juicy Fruit logo on his #40 Dodge.(Chip Ganassi Racing)(6-11-2008)

Victory Junction NASCARnival Night: On Tuesday, the Richard Childress Racing’s Sprint Cup Series over-the-wall crews made a special visit to the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, N.C. While at the camp, the crews ate dinner with the campers and demonstrated real-time pit stops. Additionally, RCR’s over-the-wall teams took hot air balloon rides, played carnival games and made snow cones with the campers. All the campers this week suffer from Chron’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects an estimated 500,000 people in the United States.(RCR)(6-11-2008)

EM Motorsports plans double duty at MIS: EM Motorsports is competing in the both the ARCA RE/MAX Series Racing for Wildlife 200 and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LifeLock 400 this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. James Hylton will be making his 32nd career start this weekend as he pilots the number #08 FUBAR Dodge Charger in ARCA RE/MAX competition. James made his first start at Michigan on June 15, 1969 in the Motor State 400. Hylton, driving the Hylton Motorsports 1969 Dodge Charger 500, finished in seventh place and collected $2,102 for his efforts.(EM Motorsports), no word who will drive the Sprint Cup car at MIS.(6-11-2008)

Vanity license plates: Earnhardt style: On Monday at a license plate bureau in Kannapolis, NC. Martha Earnhardt [Dale Earnhardt's mother] joined Dale Jr.’s mother Brenda Jackson, and his sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge to show off their specialized NASCAR license plates. The state Department of Motor Vehicles offers 25 specialty NASCAR plates, including one with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s number 88. On the honor, Martha says, “I never thought I’d have a license plate for my grandson.” Hers reads, “GMAW,” short for Grandma. Jackson’s reads “MOMA” and Elledge’s “1SIS.” It was a charity that got the Earnhardt family involved in this effort. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the plates goes to the North Carolina Motorsports Foundation, which then funds programs and scholarships for students who want to work in the industry. Jackson hopes NASCAR fans get behind the effort, saying, “The whole thing is a win, win situation. You’ve got a nice looking tag that you can put your mark on and help a lot of kids out. So, I’m very excited about it.” The special plates add $30 to your yearly registration fee — more if you want them personalized. Of that, $20 is sent to the foundation. In all, there are 25 drivers to choose from. The plates are on sale now through the state DMV website at www.ncdot.org/dmv.(WCNC.com)(6-11-2008)

Hamlin named the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Pocono: Kevin Hamlin, crew chief of the #83 Red Bull Toyota driven by Brian Vickers, has been named the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday’s Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway. After starting 15th, Vickers led 18 laps and paced the field until eventual race winner Kasey Kahne passed him on fresher tires with 15 laps to go. Following a caution on lap 178, Hamlin instructed Vickers to stay out rather than come in for tires. And although the Red Bull team did not visit victory lane, Hamlin’s quick thinking and strategy awarded them a successful runner-up position, the team’s best career finish ever. The 2008 Wypall Wipers Crew Chief Challenge is a season-long contest that will determine the best crew chiefs in the Sprint Cup garage. Following each race, a panel will vote to determine which crew chief demonstrated the most outstanding strategy and leadership during the race. It isn’t necessarily the crew chief that goes to Victory Lane, but the crew chief that makes the biggest difference for his team. Representatives from Wypall Wipers, together with FOX/SPEED television analyst Jeff Hammond, and three of NASCAR’s top crew chiefs who represent Wypall, including Todd Berrier of Richard Childress Racing’s #29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevy team, Bob Osborne of Roush Fenway Racing’s #99 Office Depot Ford team, and Kenny Francis of Gillett Evernham Motorsports’ #9 Budweiser Dodge team, make up the panel of judges. In addition to the $1,000 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly top wins will be honored as the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead. The Wypall Wipers Crew Chief Challenge will continue throughout the remainder of the 2008 season and spotlight the men behind the machines. CHICAGO, IL – June 10, 2008 – Motorcycle riders across the country are getting ready to hit the road for the first time this spring but before they do, they may want to give their bike a thorough cleaning to make their ride easier this summer.

“One of the great things about our all-surface speed detailer, Mojo, is that it can clean all types of vehicles, including motorcycles,” said Chris Ferraro, president, CEO and co-founder of Voodoo Ride, along with NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. “We’ve gotten great feedback from motorcycle owners who use Mojo on their bikes and tell us how well it cleans.”

With motorcycle riders in mind, Voodoo Ride recently added a five-ounce can of Mojo to its products line. “Our new five-ounce Mojo is the perfect size to keep in the saddle bag of a motorcycle or a car’s glove compartment. The average household rating is a 40 percent increase from last year’s .67 (477,000 households) and marks the fifth consecutive NCTS race on SPEED that has received a ratings increase this season. Despite Questions Marks for Kimmel, Full Speed Ahead for Michigan Int’l Speedway
BROOKLYN MI (6-11-08) - Nothing’s for sure in life unless you talk to nine-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel, who, despite his race-by-race tenure, says that he’ll be at Michigan Int’l Speedway no matter what.

And that speaks volumes for Kimmel who wasn’t even planning to go to Pocono a week earlier until a sponsor popped up in the final hour. Had Kimmel missed the Pocono race, it would have broken his streak of 245 consecutive series starts. As it turns out, Michigan will mark his 247th consecutive start in a series he has literally dominated over the last 10 seasons.

ARCA: Longtime Racer Jerry Churchill Passed Away
TruckSeries.com Report courtesy of Heather M.

Jerry Churchill, whose ARCA driving career spanned over the course of four decades, died Saturday June 7 after a brief hospitalization. He was 69.

Churchill’s ARCA career, which began in 1970, included 133 starts in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. He earned one RE/MAX Series victory at Kil-Kare Raceway in 1990 among 24 top-five finishes and 62 top-10s. He earned two pole awards, at Flat Rock Speedway in 1989 and Kil-Kare in 1990. He also finished a career-best third in national championship points in 1989, among a total of six career top-10 ARCA RE/MAX Series championship points finishes. Churchill semi-retired from RE/MAX Series racing at the end of the 1994 season before returning to record a 9th place finish at the Watkins Glen Int’l road course in 2001. He ran a full season in the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series in 2005, finishing 5th in points with a best finish of sixth at Toledo Speedway. He had planned to compete in 2008 RE/MAX Series events including the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile dirt tracks and the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course.

Churchill was born September 18th, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, but grew up across the river in Windsor, Ontario Canada. When he was 12, Churchill was introduced to racing - selling popcorn at the now defunct Dayus Raceway in Windsor. He was 23 when he bought his first racecar, a 1949 Hudson. Churchill’s driving career continued with local racing at Checker Flag, Dayus and Bluebird Speedways in Ontario, as well as Flat Rock Speedway and Mt. Clemens Race Track in Michigan and Toledo Speedway in Ohio. He won a track championship in 1973 in Ridgetown, Ontario, then moved to touring series competition including ARCA, NASCAR Sprint Cup and IMSA road racing. He was especially fond of off road and road course racing later in his career, often competing south of the border in the annual Mexican LaCarrera Pan Americana, as well as the Michelin One Lap of America presented by Car & Driver.

Churchill’s son Randy made 47 career RE/MAX Series starts, including one victory at I-70 Speedway in 1994, and joins his father Jerry as one of only 7 father-son event winners in the 56-year history of the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Churchill worked in the insurance and auto sales fields prior to finding his niche in the trucking industry, starting with a single tractor-trailer and building Churchill Transportation into an international transport business with over 300 rigs on the road.

Churchill is survived by his wife Doris; children Gwen King, Randy Churchill (Pam), Joe Boyle (Kelly), Kevin Boyle (Elizabeth) and David Boyle; 10 grandchildren; and sister Muriel Kay Weaver.

Cremation has taken place and memorial service plans are incomplete.

Dickies 200 Presented By Lucas Oil Notebook
A Look Back: Ranger’s Road To The Championship
Veteran Kerry Micks Uses Strategy For An Edge

Strategy More Than Intimidation Is Micks’ Style

Some say his style is to intimidate on the track. He says it is a desire to win and nothing more. Either way, Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) is a hard-nosed racer whose experience tells him to use every tool at his disposal to achieve his goals.

“I don’t go out there with the thought of being an intimidator or anything like that,” said Micks. “I just want to win. It is as simple as that. That’s just me.”

Racing is the physical act of making the car go fast. However, just as veteran baseball pitchers discover the strategy and art of their business so, too, has the Mt. Albert, Ontario-based driver evolved the mental portion of his game.

“It’s a thinking game, too,” he said.

Case in point is the season opener at Cayuga Motor Speedway. Pit strategy is often talked about as a difference maker, but the equipment and the competition, more often than not, dictates that line of attack. So, when the caution flag waved at about the halfway point in the race, virtually every driver in the lead pack headed down pit road for tires because the cars needed grip, and seemingly because everyone else did. Micks didn’t, though. He stayed out an extra 20 laps. Therefore, when he got new rubber, he was able to more than make up.

“I did lose some ground, but I knew I would be able to work my way back to the front,” Micks said.

If not for the dominating performance by Scott Steckly (No. 22 Erb Group/Tow Truck in a Box Dodge), Micks’ plan may have resulted in a win, but a solid runner-up performance and jump start in the point standings was produced.

It’s easy to get the sense that Micks spent a good portion of the off season sitting in a quiet room, mulling his and his equipment’s performance race by race, considering every factor to gain an edge.

“There’s going to be a lot of that this year from me. I have spent some time thinking about it,” Micks said. “I know what the tires, motor and everything else is capable of. Our level of competition is so tight, it’s going to be the little things that make a difference. No doubt about it.”

Also making Micks a title contender is his ability to be strong on both road courses and ovals. Nearly a third of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule is made up of road races meaning that success hangs in the balance.

He won two of the four road events in 2007, but mechanical problems unraveled his ability to contend in the other two.

“Last year at Mosport, we had a rear end gear problem. Once we got that sorted out, it was a difference of night and day,” he stated.

Last year, Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) won the Mosport road race and set the tone for his season, which culminated in a series championship.

Micks agrees that a quick start to the season is paramount to success come season’s end.

“There’s no doubt that doing well early is a huge factor,” he said. “Things are going to go wrong at some point. Everyone is going to have that, but if you can hold that off as long as possible, then, hopefully, there is enough cushion to absorb it.”

Meanwhile, Micks will continue to race each and every competitor hard with no let-up, all the while sitting in that quiet room, contemplating the softer nuances of the sport, looking for the littlest of advantages he can use in his favor.

Brown Looks To The Future With Son Behind The Wheel

With Father’s Day on the horizon, Doug Brown (No. 10 Haldex Dodge) can foresee the day, in the not too distant future, that his son, Mitchell, will climb into the seat of his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series ride.

At 15 years of age, Mitchell began his racing career last year. He won a mini-stock feature last month on the dirt track of Oshweken (Ont.) Speedway.

“I’m 44 and not getting any younger,” said Brown. “We’ve got a great sponsor in Haldex and to keep that going with my son in the car is definitely the way we’re leaning right now. He’s a bright kid and has really picked up on things in and out of the car.”

Brown, as a second generation racer, knows the game and the right time to make the transition.

“We’re going to test him at Cayuga tomorrow on asphalt in a sportsman-class car and see how that goes,” said the elder Brown. “They are running that class on the oval at Mosport when we are there this weekend. I don’t know if we’ll get him into that race, but if the test goes well, we might.”

Brown’s Canadian Tire Series program, racing out of Brantford, Ont., will look this weekend for a reversal of fortune. The 2007 season was full of bad luck and this season did not get started much better.

Just 10 laps into the season opener at Cayuga Motor Speedway, a panhard bar mount broke leading to behind-the-wall repairs and could only muster a 21st-place finish.

“It’s just been a bunch of things that we can’t control, but we’re still positive,” he said. “The Haldex folks have been great in helping us out. We’ll get it turned around.”

News & Notes

The Race: This event is the second of 13 races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio schedule. It is the second visit to the track for the Canadian Tire Series.

The Procedure: The starting field is 34 cars, including provisionals. The first 29 cars will qualify through NASCAR Road Race Style time trials. There will be two qualifying groups based on practice times. The remaining five spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 51 laps covering 200 kilometers (124.3 miles).

The Track: Mosport International Raceway is Canada’s largest motorsports complex. The 750-acre, multi-track facility is located within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), north of Bowmanville, Ont. Mosport features a 4-kilometer road course; a .500-mile, paved oval (Mosport Speedway); a 2.4-kilometer advanced driver and race driver training facility. And a 1.4-kilometer kart track. The facility opened in 1961 and has hosted stock car, Formula 1 and IndyCar events over the years. The road-course track was resurfaced in 2000 and widened to 40 feet.

The Records: Andrew Ranger holds both the qualifying and race records for Mosport Int’l Raceway. Qualifying: June 16, 2007, 103.614 mph, 85.436 seconds; Race: June 17, 2007, 86.838 mph, 1 hour, 26 minutes, 39 seconds.

Weekend of Racing: The Dickies 200 presented by Lucas Oil is part of the Sunoco Ultra 94 Father’s Day Doubleheader Weekend at Mosport. In addition to the Canadian Tire Series, the Grand-Am KONI Challenge (GS and ST classes), Ford Racing Mustang Challenge, Castrol Canadian Touring Championship, Skip Barber BF Goodrich National and Ontario Formula Ford Challenge will be on the track offering racing of all types for the weekend extravaganza.

Autodrome St. Eustache Event Re-Scheduled

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio event at Autodrome St. Eustache in Quebec has been re-scheduled to July 5.

Inclement weather in the Montreal area on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1 allowed drivers only an abbreviated practice session on Sunday morning. The July 5 event will include the full schedule of events with a practice session and time trials prior to the running of the Kodak 250.

The race slots in one week after the Canadian Tire Series visits Barrie (Ont.) Speedway and two weeks prior to the two-race western swing to SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C., and the Rexall Edmonton Indy, slated for July 19 and 26, respectively.

The airdate for TSN’s coverage of this event is slated for noon ET on Saturday, July 12.

A Look Back: Ranger’s Road To The Championship Began At Mosport

With just a pair of stock car stock car races under his belt, Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) made his mark on NASCAR Canadian Tire Series history a year ago at Mosport International Raceway.

Although only 21 years old, the Roxton Pond, Que., driver had plenty of experience on twisting, turning road courses—just not in a stock car.

He demonstrated his prowess behind the wheel right out of the gate by grabbing the pole position during time trials, but that advantage was short lived.

Still not well-versed in NASCAR race procedures, the former Champ Car standout jumped the initial race start and was penalized by race officials with a pass-through penalty, which left him well behind race leader J.R. Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately, though, that was not the only rookie mistake he would have to overcome.

Laps later when making a pit stop, Ranger stopped his Ford Fusion too close to the pit wall, leaving the jack man very little room to hoist the right side of the car. The error virtually erased all of the ground he made up following the penalty.

Undeterred, Ranger went about the business of skillfully working his way through traffic, passing cars as if they were standing still. It was difficult to tell whether the car, which seemed to be on a rail, was that good or the driver possessed an ability rarely found, but much in demand. It was probably a combination of the two, further demonstrated in the other three road course events in which he was in contention to win right to the finish line. He finished second in all three, but it was that framework on which his title was built.

After suffering through the penalty and bad pit stop in the Mosport race, Ranger was able to track down and pass Fitzpatrick at the hair-pinned Turn 5 on Lap 42.

From there, it was a matter of not making any further mistakes, which he did not. He cruised to the victory nearly two seconds ahead of Fitzpatrick.
