How About A “Senior Circuit” For NASCAR?

Thanks to those of you who welcomed me back a few weeks ago. Like I said, nothing on a regular basis, just an occasional 2 cents.

Seeing Texas Terry return to the driver’s seat gave me pause for thought.

How about a “Senior Circuit” for NASCAR? It works in golf and tennis, why not racing?

A few years back, Charlotte held an “exhibition” race which brought together a group of NASCAR’s finest veteran drivers. It was a short track race which bent up a lot of metal. A good time was had by all. Why not something on a regular basis?

The cars could be inexpensive. Crate motors, used chassis and a hard tire. Still fast enough to be a real race car. The races would be short, say 100 miles. Combine that with an autograph session and you would have a hit. This series would not need to be restricted to current Cup tracks either. For the right price, I am sure that many short tracks would be happy to host such an event.

Last but not least, limit the schedule to maybe 6 races a season.

This would allow many veterans who have other interests a chance to participate. It would also give veteran fans a new lease on life.

Right now we have name drivers running a limited schedule and several drivers either just retired or about to. How about it NASCAR?

Time to go back under my rock.

This is a great idea, kinda like the old IROC series, but smaller tracks.already have a fan base, this would be fun to watch, and I’m sure the vets would love it!!!

John, there’s already a series being organized just like what you’re mentioning. It’s the Old School Racing tour (www.osrct.com).

I wouldn’t want to see it. I would rather remember the drivers as they were and now what they have become. It broke my heart to see Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip trail the field just before they retired. I don’t like to see Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott in the field now that they can’t run in the front. Harry Gant left when it was time and I will always remember him as he was.

I would like to see it. One time at Charlotte we saw an old timers race, with Bobby Allison, and others. They were driving some sort of sports car. It was fun. But, now we have drivers like Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, Terry LaBonte and many more. I think one of the reasons they retired was the season was so long and grulling. To much sponsor stuff and testing leaving them no time for family.

You already have a senior circut…it’s “The Craftman Truck Series”.

  • Don

Who the **** wants a bunch of has beens like bill elliott and terry labonte drive around at 50 or 60 miles an hour?

  • zippy

Yeah, ok…. next you’ll want senior horse racing instead of making glue to hold the lug nuts on the wheels.

Jim Hammack you are all wrong. The truck series is great. Do a google on Colin Braun. Check out the Conway Trucking website’s Bio of young Colin.
Granted, there are some veterans running there. What’s wrong with that? Guys like Johnny Benson who couldn’t quite reach the top rung in Winston Cup are having great careers over there. SO DON’T SAY THAT AGAIN!!! LOL
As far as Old-Timers in used chassis/hard tires/crate motors? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
And don’t forget, most of these guys you’re going to have to pay them some serious bucks to show up.
Save up the money you would spend on tickets for Old Timers Jalopy Races and come to Charlotte in September for the NHRA! YEE HAW…. Now that will be something!

I am completely excited to see this series get off the ground! It’s gonna be awesome! I think it is ten races a year. And I hear they are going to start at The Rock!!!

You’re a year late with your idea. oscrt.com beat you to the punch. Read Jayski more often or NASCAR.com or Scene or just about anything and you’d realize this.
