Why were fans leaving Dover in droves?
Halfway through the race at Dover Sunday, many of the grandstand seats were empty. Fans were leaving in droves……why? That is the question that NASCAR must ask. Was it because the race was less than compelling, with only a couple of passes for the lead and two drivers basically dominating? Or was it because bad boy Kyle Busch [...]

Battlestar Shines Bright At The International Motorsports Hall of Fame: In 1987 a rookie driver assumed control of the Ranier/Lundy #28 Ford Thunderbird. He carried with him the legacy of a last name made famous by his father and uncle, two drivers who had found success on NASCAR’s grandest stage. The driver, Davey Allison, displayed the talent to earn Rookie of the Year honors. The car, dubbed the “Battlestar”, displayed the reliability and flexibility to run 14 of 22 races that season. That “star” still shines brightly on the hallowed grounds of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. On its debut run, the Battlestar car earned Allison his first Cup pole award and set the track qualifying record at Rockingham. Coincidentally, the date was Feb. 25, 1987, Allison’s 26th birthday. The Battlestar would carry Allison to a win at Dover and three more poles at Michigan, Darlington and again at Rockingham. Allison earned an additional win at Talladega and an additional pole at Daytona that year, driving the Battlestar’s sister car, the “Superstar”. The legacy of the Battlestar was almost lost in 1988, as a wreck in Atlanta so badly twisted its frame that the car was removed from competitive service. Fortunately for race fans and visitors to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, Robert Yates Racing restored the car in 1989 and promptly put it on display. Visitors to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame will find the Battlestar car on display in the Enoch Staley Room. Opened in April of 1983, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history of motorsports. It is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 7 days a week with the exception of major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter). Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $5 for kids age 7 to 17 and free for kids age 6 and younger. Combo packages that include both tours of the museum and Talladega Superspeedway are $12 for adults, $8 for kids age 7 to 17 and free for kids age 6 and younger. - Talladega Superspeedway, Press Release

Furniture Row boss races into NASCAR
By Mike Chambers
The Denver Post

Denver native and Cherry Hills resident Barney Visser became passionate about stock-car racing in 2004. Today he is considered a NASCAR maverick. He owns the Denver-based Furniture Row chain and Denver’s Furniture Row Racing.

Visser, 59, is going against the grain when it comes to racing. Almost every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team is based in North Carolina. Furniture Row Racing commutes to races from its massive shop in northeast Denver. Visser’s third-year Cup team — driven by series veteran Joe Nemechek — is having its best season. Nemechek has made 10-of-13 races.

Verizon Wireless said Thursday it would buy rural mobile phone service provider Alltel Corp for $28.1 billion, including debt, which would vault it to first place in the U.S. market ahead of AT&T Inc. Under the deal, Verizon Wireless would acquire the equity of Alltel for $5.9 billion and take on an estimated $22.2 billion in debt, mostly incurred when Alltel was taken private in November in a leveraged buyout by TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs Group Inc’s GS Capital Partners. Verizon Wireless said the deal would create savings of $1 billion in the second year after closing, which is targeted for the end of 2008, pending regulatory approval. It forecast total savings of more than $9 billion by 2011, driven by reduced capital and operating expenses. Verizon Wireless and Alltel, which has more than 13 million customers, together would have more than 80 million customers. AT&T ended the first quarter with about 71 million customers.(Forbes.com), no word on how or if this would effect the sponsorship [which is good thru 2008] of the #12 Penske Racing Dodge of Ryan Newman, whose primary sponsor is Alltel.(6-6-2008)

“The Man in Black” Program to Honor Earnhardt and Cash: Delbert McClinton, Taylor Earnhardt and Tommy Cash were guests today of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum where Dale Earnhardt and Johnny Cash were honored as two of the greatest American icons ever. Meant to continue the legacies of both men, “The Man in Black” program provided music fans and race supporters the ultimate historical crossroad between Country Music and NASCAR. Taylor Earnhardt, Dale’s daughter, and Tommy Cash, Johnny’s younger brother, spoke at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum where country recording artist Delbert McClinton and Mark Dyer, president and CEO of Motorsports Authentics, were both present. Also in attendance were NASCAR artist Sam Bass and Marshall Grant, former bassist for the Tennessee Two. “The Man in Black” car with Earnhardt’s famous paint scheme was unveiled with Cash and Earnhardt’s names and likenesses on the sides and hood of the car. The first car in a multi-year series that will continue the legacy of Earnhardt by teaming him up with other iconic American personalities, puts one of the most influential American musicians on the hood of the car of NASCAR’s most respected driver of all-time. Motorsports Authentics, through its Action Racing Collectables die-cast brand, will be offering a collectible version of the limited edition #3 Dale Earnhardt/Johnny Cash car. Pre-orders are being taken on goracing.com, nascar.com and at Motorsports Authentics authorized dealers nationwide. Chase Authentics, the authentic trackside apparel of NASCAR, will also offer Cash and Earnhardt fans an opportunity to express their love of both men through an array of apparel items such as hats, t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts. In addition to Thursday’s unveiling and special guitar presentation from Sam Bass, it was announced today that QVC will go live from Nashville on Friday night with its “For Race Fans Only” show. Set to air from 7 - p pm/et live from the Musicians Hall of Fame, “For Race Fans Only” will celebrate the “Man in Black” program and give Cash and Earnhardt fans around the world a unique opportunity to see this historic convergence of NASCAR and Country Music.(Motorsports Authentics PR), see more a goracing.com.(6-6-2008)

Pocono Tire Notes: This is the first time that Goodyear has brought these tire codes to Pocono, though Sprint Cup teams did run this exact combination of left- and right-side tires at Bristol earlier this season . . . Cup teams also tested this tire set-up during a successful open test at Pocono in mid-May . . . compared to the tire codes run at Pocono in 2007, there have been no performance changes to this left-side code (D-4158), while this right-side code (D-4160) features a different compound and construction for enhanced grip and performance . . . as on all NASCAR’s ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Pocono . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. The estimated pit window is every 32-34 laps, based on fuel mileage.(Goodyear PR), see the full tire notes, pressures and more om my Pocono Race Info page.(6-6-2008) www.jayski.com/next/2008/14poc2008.htm#goodyear

#31 will hit the ‘Road to Beijing’ with new paint scheme: To drive excitement for Team USA at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, AT&T Inc. today announced a new paint scheme for Richard Childress Racing’s (RCR) #31 AT&T Chevrolet, driven by Jeff Burton. Burton will circle the Pocono Raceway in a paint scheme featuring the AT&T USA five-ring logo and images of U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls gymnast Nastia Liukin and swimmer Michael Phelps. “We’re excited to integrate our support for professional stock car racing and AT&T Team USA into this fresh and unique paint scheme,” said Jamie Butcher, vice president of Sponsorships and Employee Communications. Burton said: “We’re in the midst of an exciting season, and the AT&T Racing team is thrilled about the new look. The Olympic Games only come around every two years, and it’s an honor to show our support for AT&T Team USA hopefuls.” “It’s an amazing honor to be featured on Jeff Burton’s race car and to know that we have great support from fans, AT&T and the AT&T Racing team as we prepare for the Olympic Games,” Liukin said. “The new paint scheme looks awesome.” Liukin is currently focused on qualifying for her first Olympic Games. She now has nine world medals (four gold and five silver), tying the mark of nine world medals held by Shannon Miller, who has earned more world and Olympic medals than any other U.S. gymnast (16 total). Phelps said: “The excitement and encouragement we receive from fans around the Olympic Games is incredible, and it really motivates us to compete at our very best. The new paint scheme will help drive that enthusiasm for the Olympic Games, and it’s a privilege to be showcased on the #31 AT&T Chevrolet.” Phelps is the most decorated swimmer in World Championships history and is a 20-time world-record holder. He captured eight medals - six gold and two bronze - at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, becoming the first American to win eight medals in one Olympiad. The new paint scheme was unveiled today at the 2008 Visa Championships at Boston University’s Agganis Arena, where Liukin and the USA’s other top gymnasts begin the final steps toward earning berths on the U.S. Olympic Team. The race car will tour the country to promote excitement for the 2008 Olympic Games and support for Team USA until its race track debut at the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway in August. “It is exciting to see AT&T taking Olympic sponsorship outside the traditional boundaries,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “Having USA Gymnastics and Nastia representing the Olympic movement within NASCAR is a tremendous testament to the relevance of the Olympic Games, and the sense of pride that we all have around the U.S. Team.” Today’s announcement is the latest move by AT&T to help U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes train and compete for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. AT&T is an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team and provides significant financial support, products and services to the U.S. Olympic Committee. AT&T will also serve as the official telecommunications services partner of the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2008 Olympic Games. In addition to supporting USA Gymnastics and USA Swimming, the company serves as an official partner for several National Governing Bodies, including USA Track & Field and USA Diving. Team USA enthusiasts who want to stay connected to their favorite U.S. athletes can log on to the AT&T blue room (attblueroom.com/teamusa) to enjoy webcasts of events and exclusive interviews with AT&T U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls. The blue room currently features “USA Gymnastics: Behind the Team,” the online series available only on the AT&T blue room Team USA site. Liukin and Phelps are also featured in AT&T Tips and Training program episodes - original productions that provide fans access to sport-specific training tips from several elite U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls. Liukin is in the latest AT&T Home Turf episode - a series of streaming video webisodes in which athletes grant fans a behind-the-scenes peek of life off the clock. AT&T U-verseSM TV customers can also connect with U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls with AT&T Tips and Training and “USA Gymnastics: Behind the Team” via AT&T Team USA On Demand. These sponsorships are an important part of AT&T’s mission to connect people with their world, everywhere they live and work, and do it better than anyone else. Additional information about AT&T’s sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic Team is available at www.att.com/teamusa2008. For more information on AT&T’s products and services, visit www.att.com. What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?

There is - and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.

It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

Scott Wimmer took advantage of the last Nashville stand-alone, becoming the first NASCAR Nationwide Series-only regular to win this season. In that race, Wimmer notched a Driver Rating of 129.2, an Average Running Position of 4.5, 45 Fastest Laps Run and spent all but five of his Laps in the Top 15.He could very well pull the Nashville sweep – his stats there are among the best in the series.Over his last three Nashville races, Wimmer has an average Driver Rating of 122.2, an Average Running Position of 4.5, 117 Fastest Laps Run and has run 99.3% of the Laps in the Top 15. All those statistics rank in the top five in the series.Of course, any time NASCAR races at a concrete track, Carl Edwards’ name has to be mentioned. He won three straight at Nashville – the second race in 2006 and a sweep in 2007 – and has earned some of the series’ top stats. In his six career races at Nashville, Edwards has an average finish of 2.5, an average Driver Rating of 123.3, an Average Running Position of 5.1, a series-high 214 Fastest Laps Run and has a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 96.0.Standings leader Clint Bowyer is also stout at Nashville. He won there in 2005 and has finished second in each of the last four Nashville races. Over his last six races there, Bowyer owns series-highs in Driver Rating (130.4), Average Running Position (3.6) and Laps in the Top 15 (1,308/96.9%). He also ranks third in Fastest Laps Run with 181.Triple threat Kyle Busch also will be the talk of the weekend, although his Nashville results haven’t been outstanding. He’s cracked the top 10 only once in five starts and in his last three appearances there, Busch has a Driver Rating of 87.3.(NASCAR) (06-05-08)

Jun 5 NASCAR Nationwide Series:Director’s take on Nashville-“This is our second trip to Nashville this year in a short time span,” said Joe Balash, NASCAR Nationwide Series director. “The teams should have great notes from the first race in March. That race almost acted like a test session and should allow teams to start with better setups. The crew chiefs will have a lot more to work with to fine-tune the cars for the event.”“It’s also the second week in a row we’re racing on a concrete surface and drivers should have a good feel for the track. “We’re also at the true start of the stand-alone season with Nashville, Kentucky and Milwaukee in succession. “Summer is go-time. It’s a chance for regulars to gain some spots on double duty drivers.“It’s much more difficult for a double-duty driver to participate, especially if there’s anything that affects the timing of the event due to the weather at this time of year—similar to what happened to Carl Edwards at this race three years ago. Rain forced us to move from Saturday to Sunday; Carl missed the race and ultimately lost a shot at the championship.”(NASCAR) (06-05-08)

Blazing Fast, Texas Holds A Surprise or Two
06-05-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Going NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racing is a humbling business. One minute you’re leading the race, the next minute a flat tire or an errant fender puts you in the wall at 180 miles per hour and you’re finishing 35th. Lately, prognosticating about the Truck Series hasn’t been much easier. Really, who would have ever predicted Matt Crafton, Donny Lia and Scott Speed as the last three NCTS winners? Put it this way: If you did actually pick those three guys to win over the last three weeks, quit your day job and hop the first plane to Vegas. Seriously, these were upsets of major proportions, which has made for the least predictable season in years. And the most interesting, as the top eight drivers in the NCTS points standings are separated by a mere 68 markers. This week, the truck series drivers head to the ultra-fast, 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval, site of Friday night’s Sam’s Town 400, race No. 10 of 25 on the year. And anytime the NCTS boys are the grand state of Texas, the discussion starts with Todd Bodine and the powerhouse Lumber Liquidators No. 30 Toyota Tundra campaigned by Germain Racing. “The Onion” is the defending race champion, having captured four of the last seven truck races at Texas. Bodine loves fast 1.5-mile tracks and has terrorized the competition here of late.

Red Bull on the Run; Double Duty for Speed
LONG POND PA (6-5-08) - With two weekends off after a very busy early-season, six-race stretch, ARCA RE/MAX Series teams have finally had some time to regroup as they steer toward Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania this weekend for Saturday’s Pocono 200, the eighth event on the 2008 calendar.

At least most of the series drivers got some badly-needed R&R; but not so much for SunTrust Rookie of the Year contender Scott Speed. And that turned out to be a very good thing.

Mattioli Prepares for Hometown Run in Pocono

LONG POND PA (6-4-08) - As the grandson of Pocono Raceway patriarchs Dr. Joe and Rose Mattioli, Chase Mattioli is destined to one day be an owner of the track.

Following Speedway Motorsports, Inc.’s (SMI) recent purchase of Kentucky Speedway, there was speculation that Pocono might also be sold; that was until Rose Mattioli spoke to the Associated Press Tuesday.
