NASCAR drivers salaries are skyrocketing
Unlike other big league professional sports, NASCAR’s teams and drivers don’t disclose compensation. The public knows what Peyton Manning, Alex Rodriguez and Kobe Bryant earn, but can only guess and wonder about Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch. NASCAR does release money won from purses, and it’s a recognized fact that drivers get a [...]

Stewart Wins Prelude To The Dream
Stewart Led Entire Race To Win “Prelude”
Tony Stewart dominated the Old Spice Prelude to the Dream dirt late model race Wednesday night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio by leading all 30 laps en route to his second victory in the prestigious charity event. Stewart, who owns Eldora, passed pole-sitter Kevin Harvick on the first lap and never looked back as he defeated Prelude rookie Robby Gordon by 1.502 seconds. Dirt track veteran Clint Bowyer was third. “After crashing out last year, I was bound and determined that I was going to run better,” said Stewart, who finished 22nd in last year’s Old Spice Prelude to the Dream but won the event in 2006. “I mean, this team is always good. Mark Richards and Josh Richards and everybody at Rocket Chassis – these cars are better than ever now. Tonight was fun. When you can run around the rim like this, that’s what Eldora was built around – ‘rim riders.’”
Gordon, who has considerable off-road experience, was impressive in his Prelude debut. “It was a good time,” Gordon said. “I want to thank Scott (Bloomquist, car owner) and the whole crew for doing a great job with the car. For me, I just had to drive it. I want to thank Tony for putting on another good event and inviting me to come play, and I look forward to coming back next year.”
There were seven caution periods during the event, although the laps conducted under caution did not count. The race, which drew more than 23,000 fans, was broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View with proceeds from the nationwide telecast going to support the soon-to-be constructed Victory Junction Gang Camp – Kansas City and the Tony Stewart Foundation.
Toyota Wins All Three Races
This past weekend at Dover International Speedway, Toyota swept all three NASCAR Series races for the very first time. Kyle Busch earned his fourth NSCS victory of the season and Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race on Saturday. Rookie Tundra driver Scott Speed won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race on Friday. This is only the seventh time in NASCAR history that a manufacturer has earned wins in all three NASCAR series at the same track in the same race weekend.

Verizon in talks to buy Alltel: Verizon Wireless is in talks to buy Alltel Communications LLC, the country’s fifth-largest wireless carrier by subscribers, for $27 billion, according to news reports. If consummated, an acquisition would be the biggest telecom deal since AT&T Inc. bought BellSouth Corp. at the end of 2006. Adding Alltel’s 13.2 million subscribers to Verizon Wireless’ 67.2 million would create the largest wireless carrier in the country, far ahead of AT&T Inc. with 71.4 million customers. Talks are at a sensitive stage, according to CNBC and The Wall Street Journal. Both reports cited unnamed sources close to the discussions. Representatives of Verizon Communications Inc. and Alltel had no comment Wednesday.(Associated Press), no word on how or if this would effect the sponsor ship of the #12 Penske Racing Dodge of Ryan Newman, whose primary sponsor is Alltel.(6-5-2088)
Steak-umm adds 2nd race to DEI sponsorship: Steak-umm has added an additional NASCAR race sponsorship to its 2008 campaign with an agreement to serve as the primary sponsor of the #8 Chevy driven by Mark Martin in this weekend’s Pocono 500 Sprint Cup Race at Pocono Raceway. Steak-umm previously sponsored rookie-of-the-year leader Regan Smith’s #01 car in the May Richmond Sprint Cup race, and will again serve as the primary sponsor of Martin’s #8 Chevy in the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono in August. Steak-umm also serves as an associate sponsor on the #8 car for the full 2008 season.(Yahoo Biz), see images of the scheme on my #8 Team Schemes page of #01 Team Schemes page.(6-5-2008)

TNT’s Wally Dallenbach hops back in the car for Wally’s World, this time joined in a second car by Kyle Petty as they get behind the wheel of stock cars and demonstrate to viewers the nuances of each racetrack and break down the strategy required to be successful each week. Pocono Rookie Notes: #77-Sam Hornish Jr. was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the June 1 Best Buy 400 at Dover International Speedway. Hornish Jr. scored an 18th-place finish and claimed top rookie honors for the fifth time in 13 races this season. #00-Michael McDowell led the Dover race once for one lap, the first time he has led in eight Sprint Cup Series starts. Other Raybestos Rookies that have led a lap this season: #10-Patrick Carpentier (four), #40-Dario Franchitti (1) and #01-Regan Smith (1). Hornish Jr. and Regan Smith are tied for the lead (127-127) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the June 8 Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway. This is the fourth tie for the lead in the overall Raybestos Rookie standings this season. Three Raybestos Rookies have guaranteed starting positions at Pocono: Smith, Hornish Jr. and McDowell. Franchitti and Carpentier must qualify on speed. Franchitti will be attempting to make his first Sprint Cup Series start since April 12 at Phoenix. Franchitti has been sidelined since he fractured his left foot in an accident April 26 in a Nationwide Series race at Talladega. The only Raybestos Rookie to win the Pocono 500 (26 races) is Denny Hamlin. Hamlin won the 2006 race 1.328 seconds over second-place Kurt Busch and became just the third Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five finish in the June race at Poco# He also became the first Raybestos Rookie to lead the most laps (six times for 83 laps) and is one of just six rookies to lead a lap in the June race at Pocono (since 1989). Two Raybestos Rookies have won pole positions for the June race at Pocono: Hamlin and Kasey Kahne, who captured the top starting position for the 2004 race. Only once since 1975 have two or more Raybestos Rookies finished in the top-10 in the June race at Pocono: Tim Richmond finished ninth and Ron Bouchard placed 10th in the 1981 Mountain Dew 500. The most recent Raybestos Rookie to win a pole position in the Sprint Cup Series is Denny Hamlin. Hamlin captured the top starting spot for the 2006 Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond (59 races).(Camp & Assoc/Raybestos), see Rookie history, standings and more on my 2008 Rookies page.(6-5-2008) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2008/roty2008.htm

What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?
There is – and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.
It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

NELLES CORNERS, ON (6-4-08) – For the first time since 1992, the ARCA RE/MAX Series is headed north of the border.
Cayuga Motor Speedway, a .625-mile paved short-track in Nelles Corners, Ontario, will host the 56-year-old tour with the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 Sunday afternoon, June 29th.
In addition, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will join the ARCA RE/MAX Series for an ARCA double-header weekend kicking off with the ARCA Lincoln Welders 50 Saturday afternoon, June 28th.
Expected entries for the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 include Roush Fenway Racing development driver Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Formula 1 veteran Scott Speed in the Red Bull Toyota, three-time series winner Justin Allgaier, Denver, North Carolina’s Matt Carter and Cherry Hill, New Jersey’s Tom Hessert III.
After seven events so far in 2008, there have been no repeat winners. Series victors include Michael Annett at Daytona Int’l Speedway, Justin Allgaier at Salem Speedway, Matt Hawkins at Iowa Speedway, Scott Speed at Kansas Speedway, Joey Logano at Rockingham Speedway, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. at Kentucky Speedway and Matt Carter at Toledo Speedway.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series has been long regarded as one of the most versatile touring series in the world regularly competing on superspeedways, short-tracks, on both dirt and pavement, and road courses.
The race will mark the eighth appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series in Canada since 1967. The ARCA RE/MAX Series first traveled into Canada in July of 1967 to Capital City Speedway in Ottawa, Ontario where Bill Clemens earned the victory in the 100-lap main event.
After a 20-year hiatus, the series return to Canada on May 22, 1987 at Delaware Speedway in Delaware, Ontario where Bill Venturini won the 125-lap race. The next five ARCA RE/MAX Series appearances in Canada were all at Delaware where winners included Tracy Leslie (August 12, 1988), Bob Keselowski (August 11, 1989, July 7, 1991 & July 11, 1992) and Bob Strait (September 29, 1990).
The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series is building its own presence in Canada having already competed at Delaware on three occasions and at Sauble Speedway twice. ALWTS winners in Canada include Brett Rowe (Delaware 2005), Paul Hahn (Delaware 2006 and Sauble 2006 & 2007) and Nick Gullatta (Delaware 2007).
Cayuga Motor Speedway, just over a half-mile in length, is wide with relatively flat and sweeping corners, ideal for close, competitive short-track racing – the kind that puts much of the outcome back into the driver’s hands.
Set on nearly 300 acres, Cayuga offers fans a full range of amenities including 1,500 campsites, refreshment and souvenir booths and free supervised parking. There is also a covered pavilion, which often serves as a gathering spot to enjoy all the festivities.
Practice for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is scheduled for Saturday, June 28th from 12:30-2:00 PM followed by SIM Factory Pole Qualifying at 3:30. The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series race follows ARCA RE/MAX Series qualifying Saturday afternoon. The Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 is set for 1:30 PM Sunday afternoon, June 29th.

Do You Remember When?
Bill France Jr. passed away on June 4th of last year. Viewers may remember that it was actually during a live race that the news broke. France lived in the footsteps of his father and worked hard in the sport. That is a picture below of a young Bill Jr. driving a grader on what would become the backstretch of Daytona International Speedway.
