I’m back, and had a great and relaxing time. Thank you to Heather for filling in with the Stock Car Gazette while I was gone. She did more than I expected her to do, and I appreciate it and her. Those of you who happened to stop by the website might have noticed the postings for each day of my vacation… just a little fun thing I did there. At least “I” enjoyed it.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy today’s edition of the Stock Car Gazette.

Jeff Gordon, Hendrick And Dupont Announce Contract Extension: Jeff Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports and DuPont will continue as the longest active driver/owner/sponsor combination in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series through 2010. The two-year contract extension announcement came today at DuPont’s global headquarters where Gordon spent the day with employees during their annual employee appreciation day.
Gillett Evernham Motorsports signs Elliott Sadler to Contract Extension: Gillett Evernham Motorsports announced today it has signed a multi-year contract extension with driver Elliott Sadler. “Elliott is a well respected driver who has the skills, both on and off the track, to succeed in NASCAR,” said CEO Tom Reddin. “In addition to being a great Sprint Cup driver, Elliott has a wonderful personality that attracts fans and sponsors who love working with him. We have enjoyed working with Elliott over the last year and a half and look forward to continuing our relationship.” Sadler, 33, joined Gillett Evernham Racing in 2006 and is glad to have a future with the team. “This is the place where I want to race,” the Emporia, Va. native said. “I think what we are building here is special and something other drivers and crew members envy.” Sadler drives the No. 19 Dodge sponsored by Best Buy, Stanley Tools, McDonald’s and Siemens. He owns three career victories. – Gillett Evernham Motorsports, Press Release

McMurray Out Next Year
The driver dominoes in the Sprint Cup Series are apparently beginning to fall into place. Jamie McMurray will not return to Roush Fenway Racing next season and has been actively seeking other employment, the Observer and ThatsRacin.com have learned. In the past week or so, representatives on behalf of McMurray have notified other Cup teams of his availability beginning next season, multiple sources confirmed on Sunday.
Busch Wins At Dover
It was the third attempt for Kyle Busch at Dover International Speedway this weekend and this time he closed the deal. Starting third in all three series, Craftsman Trucks, Nationwide and Sprint Cup, Busch ran into trouble on Friday and Saturday but literally dominated the Best Buy 400 on Sunday. Just as he had tamed Darlington three weeks ago, he tamed the monster at Dover. It was Busch’s fourth win this year and the eighth victory in 127 career races. Busch has won ten races this season, in all three top series. Busch extended his lead in the NASCAR point standings to 142 over Jeff Burton and 271 over Dale Earnhardt Jr. Busch was so proficient that there were only six cars left on the lead lap at the end of the race.
Carl Edwards had the car to beat early in the Dover race but in the end, had nothing for Busch and finished second nearly six seconds off the lead. Edwards also finished second on Saturday in the Nationwide race. Edwards’ teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth placed third and fourth respectively. Jeff Gordon was fifth followed by Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton, Dave Blaney and Jamie McMurray to round out the top ten.
The race was barely 19 laps into the contest when Elliott Sadler came down on David Gilliland and spun coming off turn two. Stewart plowed into Sadler and all heck broke loose with other driver joining the wreckage. All-in-all eleven drivers had severe damage. Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Bill Elliott, Paul Menard, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Scott Riggs and Kasey Kahne were involved. All the drivers were checked at the infield medical center and released. Only Sadler and Hamlin were unable to return to action. The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule is the June 8th Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway. The race begins at 12:30 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by TNT beginning with its pre-race show at 12:00 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Benson joins NASCAR Now on Monday: The Monday, June 2, edition of NASCAR Now will expand to an hour and will include host Allen Bestwick leading a roundtable discussion with ESPN analysts and reporters of the weekend’s NASCAR action Dover (Del.) International Speedway as well as other NASCAR news. The program airs at a special time of 6:30pm/et, following ESPN2′s live coverage of the French Open. NASCAR driver Johnny Benson will join ESPN analyst Brad Daugherty and pit reporter Mike Massaro for a one-hour roundtable discussion on the Monday, June 2.
Busch almost loses helmet: #18-Kyle Busch almost had to go to a backup helmet this weekend. His helmet was stolen from the garage Friday night, but track security officers caught the culprit. “Somebody snuck in the garage with the cleanup crew and stole it,” Busch said. “Somebody saw it happen, I guess, and they told security guards outside. They were checking everybody that was leaving and they found him and brought the helmet back.” Did the helmet have any special significance to Busch? “It didn’t matter,” he said. “It’s not a lucky helmet.” But Busch now has two victories with that helmet, including Atlanta. “On second thought, it might be a lucky helmet,” team owner Joe Gibbs said.(ESPN.com)(6-2-2008)
Ambrose eyeing Cup: Marcos Ambrose was encouraged, but also somewhat realistic following his recent Sprint Cup test at Pocono International Raceway. The Tuesday-Wednesday test marked his first time in a Cup car [actually Ambrose practiced a 2nd Robby Gordon car at Watkins Glen in 2007 before qualifying was rained out] and his first time at the three-sided, 2.5-mile track in the mountains of northeast Pennsylvania. “It went OK, pretty good,” the 31-year-old Australian said Saturday at Dover International Speedway. “But it was a difficult place to get in a Cup car for the first time. I went there to get in laps and get a feel for that kind of [Cup] car. We ran in the middle of the pack most of the day. Another few tenths [of a second] would have been nice, but, still, I learned a lot about these Cup cars. The adjustment [from Nationwide to Cup COT car] is as tough as everyone said it would be. And Pocono is about as hard a track to learn as I’ve ever seen. I know we have plenty of work to do, but we got better as we went along and got a good feel for where we are.” Ambrose will run a handful of Cup races this season, some in the Wood Brothers’ #21 Ford and some with #47 Ford-based JTG Racing. He’ll run Sonoma and Watkins Glen for the Woods, plus a race in Michigan and one in Loudon [New Hampshire]. “I can’t remember the others he’ll do for us,” team co-owner Eddie Wood said Saturday. “It’s on a calendar somewhere at the shop. I’m sure of those four, but there are maybe three or four more he’ll do for us.” Ambrose also will do at least Indianapolis, Kansas, Atlanta, and Homestead in the #47 Fusion of JTG Racing.(Ford Racing)(6-2-2008)

Haas CNC still deciding whether to appeal penalties: Haas CNC Racing [#66 and #70 Chevy's] has not yet decided whether it will appeal the penalties for illegal wing mounting locations found May 24 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, team competition director Matt Borland said Sunday morning. NASCAR penalized the drivers and teams 150 points and suspended the two crew chiefs as well as the car chiefs for six races. In the past, NASCAR has docked 100 points and only suspended crew chiefs. NASCAR also has confiscated and kept the cars. The team has another six days to decide whether to appeal. “It’s their decision to make and we’ll deal with what we’ve got to deal with,” Borland said at Dover International Speedway. “I don’t know [about an appeal] right now.”(SceneDaily), see the news on the penalties on my Penalties page.(6-1-2008)

Truex expects to re-sign with DEI: #1-Martin Truex Jr. doesn’t want to talk much about his contract, which is up after this season. But the Stafford Township, N.J., native says he wants to sign a long-term deal with Dale Earnhardt Inc. “We’re just working on some stuff,” he said Saturday of the negotiations. On April 28, ESPN.com reported that DEI had picked up Truex’s option for the 2009 season. However, there have since been other reports stating that deal was not yet complete and that Truex remains a possible free agent. DEI president of global operations Max Siegel has said signing Truex long-term is a priority. Truex declined to talk in detail about his contract status but said it has been difficult dealing with the issue on top of the pressure of being one of the Sprint Cup series’ top drivers – last year, he qualified for the 12-driver Chase for the Championship for the first time, and this year he became DEI’s top driver when Dale Earnhardt Jr. left as a free agent for Hendrick Motorsports. “It’s a pain,” Truex said. “It’s a big pain. That’s why I try not to talk about it. We’ll see what happens. We’ll get it done, and when it’s done, everybody will know.”(Atlantic City Press)(6-1-2008)
Latest with Sorenson: There has been speculation that #42-Juan Pablo Montoya, unhappy with Chip Ganassi for making yet another crew chief change, could leave at the end of the season, possibly to replace Tony Stewart at Joe Gibbs Racing if Stewart decides to move on. Though unlikely, if Montoya were to leave Ganassi, it might be the only way Reed Sorenson gets to stay in the #41 Target Dodge. But if Montoya does stay put, which would appear the more likely scenario, Sorenson could be on his way out. The 22-year-old Sorenson has been with CGR for five years, starting first as a developmental driver, then as a Busch Series competitor and subsequently a quick ascension to a full-time Cup ride at the age of 20. He finished 24th in the standings in his rookie campaign two years ago, improved to 22nd last season, but has had a horrible start to his junior season currently in 30th position, with just one top-five finish in the first 12 events (a fifth-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500). The last four races came under new crew chief Donnie Wingo, who switched roles/teams with Jimmy Elledge (Montoya’s former crew chief) just before Sorenson’s last-place finish at Talladega on April 27. Sorenson’s in the final year of his three-year contract with CGR. While he’s trying to remain optimistic that he’ll be retained, two things seem to be working against him. Sorenson acknowledges with a shrug he’s heard rumors that Dan Wheldon, who drives for Ganassi in the Indy Racing League, is interested in jumping to NASCAR to join fellow former open-wheelers Montoya and Dario Franchitti. It’s highly unlikely Ganassi would expand his Cup program to four teams, meaning one driver currently in his stable would have to go. More than likely that would be Sorenson, who would find himself in the same position as former teammate David Stremme, who was bounced to the curb last year in favor of Franchitti. Sorenson’s overall performance this season does not put him in a very strong bargaining position. While a longtime Ganassi favorite, Sorenson is expendable, particularly if a guy like Wheldon decides to make the switch. “I’m kind of making sure I concentrate on (this year) before I get too carried away with next year yet,” he said. “I figure if I can run good here for a little while, then (whether he’ll stay with CGR) will take care of itself.”(Yahoo Sports)(6-1-2008)

What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?
There is – and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.
It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

Tracy testing with Germain at Chicagoland UPDATE: Open-wheeler Paul Tracy, who made his NASCAR debut in NASCAR’s #2 series in 2006, will return to the oval-track for a one-day test at Chicagoland Speedway on Wednesday, May 28th. While this will be Tracy’s first experience in a truck, he is known as one of the most cerebral wheelmen in the business and he will adapt quickly. Versatility is a trademark of the 2003 Champ Car World Series Champion, as Tracy has raced open-wheel cars, Grand-Am cars, NASCAR, and off-road trucks, all in the last two years. (Player Mgmt. PR)(5-26-2008)
Possibility for 09? It was just an engine test with a driver currently out of work, as the 40-year-old Canadian has been unsuccessful in attempts to land a ride in the new unified IndyCar Series. Then again, it’s perhaps the most interesting pairing of a former open-wheel driver with a truck team. “We haven’t talked about specifics — it’s been more about maybe trying to think about that next year,” team owner Bob Germain said. “Though if we saw something come together, you’re so much further ahead if you can run some races this year to get everybody familiar with each other. But realistically, we’ve got a lot on our plate right now. We won’t rule out the possibility we’d do that, but this process just started.” This week, Tracy’s goals were modest: namely, to get acclimated to a race truck and to provide some feedback for the #30 team. Bodine tested all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning, then got to pass the wheel and rest for Friday’s race at Dover.(ESPN.com)(5-30-2008)
