Track Trash – It’s D’over

Such an exciting race.

Believe that one and I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn that I wanna sell you.

Pablo: Interesting to see Pablo getting into a hissy fit about another sudden change of crew chiefs. AssiGanassi may have had his reasons, but it sure upset our Columbian friend. Suddenly rumors sprang that Pablo may jump ship after this year, and (of course) the rumors are suggesting a tie-in with Smoke leaving. Ahhh. Where would we be without rumors? It’s the backbone of NA$CAR, and we depend on them to make our lives complete. Tell me……what other sport is so inexplicably tied to rumors? I rest my case.

For Sale?: The management at Dover split off the gambling portion of their holdings from the track portion, and wants to dump the track. The track stock value has dropped about 20% since the casinos were split off about 6 years ago, and seems ripe for another Bruton acquisition. One of these days Bruton’s gonna buy a track and move a date either to Vegas or Kentucky, and this may be the one to do it.

Da Race: The single most crucial part of the race was on lap 18, when DavieGilliland plowed into the LR fender of Saddleburns, and set off a chain reaction that can only be described as The Big One. TV and radio analysis vary between 10 and 12 cars involved, but my calculation showed the following cars had damage to one degree or another: 07, 9, 11, 15,19, 20, 21, 29, 38, 43, 66, 77 & 88. Smoke did an interview and admitted it was his fault, but it obviously wasn’t. He doesn’t have a whole lot of faith in Saddleburns’ driving ability, but neither really was at fault. Nonetheless, a lot of sheet metal was rendered useless, and a number of Playoff contenders were caught up in it.

Boring?: Depending on who you root for, this may have been a boring race. The Roushketeers were stout all day, but just didn’t have it at the end. The only excitement came with our wondering if KidKyle’s car would crap out in the last 10 laps. But alas, it didn’t, and he chalked up another W. No story line with Gordo or JJ, cuz they were just average drivers today. Heck, JamieMac made more TV time than either of them. The newsworthy item was that there were only six (6) cars on the lead lap at the end, which may have set a recent time record for the fewest.

Surprise: What’s amazing is when you consider the number of cars in the Playoff that were involved in The Big One, and how little it affected their Points standings. Take for example Jr., who ended the race 14 laps down, yet didn’t slip from his #3 Points position. Take a few moments to study the Points.

Stupid: VickersVapoRub had a good race going. He was in the top 15 and looked stout. Then he got tagged for speeding on pit road. Not long after, he got tagged a second time for the same offense. Me thinks that Red Bull will not stand for this in the future, and will give him a good verbal lashing this week. He deserves it.

Foxy: This was the last telecast for the Fox boys this year. We move to FX for a while (seeing Mr.Pigtail in his true domain), then wrapping the year up with ABC/ESPN (finally getting to see DJ on a full time basis – they did a wise move to dump Rustoleum). The Fox boys don’t please everyone, but I, for one, will miss them. FX and ABC have some big shoes to fill.

  • I hope you’re not looking for next week’s race on FX…because it will be on TNT. And you won’t get to see DJ until the coverage moves to ABC/ESPN. But you might enjoy Kyle Petty for the next 6 weeks on TNT.

  • Yeah the Cup race was boring! But thank God for Saturday nights race! Man those kids in Nationwide can put on a show! that Lagano or what ever his name is, will be a driver to contend with, then the Wallace kid and Brad#88, all very talented drivers, a joy to watch! As far as Fox, I will miss them, but if the TNT announcers start all this comparing kyle to Earnhardt Sr. I will mute the TV and just listen to my scanner, and if the TNT channel cant do something about all the same stupid commercials we see every week, they certainly will have a lot of negative feedback from us fans who are sick of this! I watch to see a stockcar race, not be bombarded with silliness. I know the sponsers need to advertise but aint that why they write thier names all over the race cars? And Nascar needs to drop Dover and put Darlington back on at Labor Day!
