Who called this meeting? Oh, I did, didn’t I?

I wanted to let each of you know that the www.MotorSportsNews.net site will be CLOSED from May 24 through June 1.

A note will also be posted on the site to let visitors know why there are no updates.

I normally take my family vacation later in the year. Our plans changed this year, and the opportunity came up next week to get away.

And I mean, “AWAY”… no cell phones, no e-mail, no Internet, no TV, nothing except trees, and creeks, and hills, and birds, and other critters.

The website will not be updated during this time. No columns will be published.

The Stock Car Gazette e-zine will not be sent out during this time, other than weekend editions by Heather as she is able.

The site will resume normal activity around June 2 or so.

Thanks very much,

Mike Irwin

Classy Drivers: Tony Stewart & Denny Hamlin
by: Robyn Snell

Tony Stewart used to be the bad boy of NASCAR, but he earned his “right” to be bad boy by backing up his arrogance with championships. Tony would call situations exactly how he saw them, and it was left up to the fans to agree or disagree!

Gibbs Engine Woes Fixed
All three Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas had engine trouble last weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but the team’s head engine builder said the problem has been fixed. Mark Cronquist attributed the failures – Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin blew up during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, while Tony Stewart blew up in practice – to rocker arm problems. “It was a new engine package for us,” Cronquist said. “Basically, we put together different engine packages, depending on what we’re going to be doing in the race. We knew this one wasn’t going to last. I personally thought it would last 350 miles, and it didn’t.

Doug Richert Leaves DEI

Bruton to buy Kentucky? announcement Today?
www.jayski.com/cupnews.htm#tracks

Brian France Interview: Heading into Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR CEO and chairman Brian France, 45, spoke to USA TODAY on Wednesday about the state of the sport:
What is the status and future of drug testing in NASCAR?
“We have a very thorough policy that, like anything else, is going to get a review to see if we can improve it. The high points of our policy … are that we can test anybody we want at any time, and the punishments … are very significant. If we can improve it, we’ll announce something, probably later in the summer.”
What concerns do you have about the viability of your series sponsors?
“We’re optimistic (on Sprint). They have a different management team that has taken them in a different direction. … We’re very confident they’re going to be around for a long time. … Craftsman is leaving at the end of this year, so we’re … looking at a replacement for that national (truck) series. Nationwide is beginning a seven-year agreement with our second series.”
Is there a legitimate fear that a manufacturer like Dodge might decide to pull out, or others scale back?
“That’s always possible. But … they realize this is one of the few places where they can showcase their products in a way that’s very different from any other marketing opportunity. So while their business challenges are significant … we play a nice role in giving them a good marketing opportunity.”(see the full interview at USA Today)(5-22-2008)

Martin Ready to Salute the Troops in More Ways Than One: In the true spirit of Sunday’s Memorial Day weekend classic at Lowe’s Motor Speedway — the Coca-Cola 600 — Mark Martin’s #8 U.S. Army Chevy will feature photos of eight soldiers on the outside of the car. The unique paint scheme is part of the USO Salute the Troops Memorial Day tribute to the armed forces. Despite his limited schedule in 2008 and having missed three of 11 events, Martin’s two top fives are as many or more than 21 drivers who have competed in all 11 races. His four top-10 finishes are more than 19 drivers who have taken part in every event this season.(U.S. Army Racing PR), see an image of the scheme on my #8 Team Schemes page.(5-22-2008) www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/8cup.htm

Helio Castroneves said Wednesday he doesn’t plan to leave the IRL’s IndyCar Series for NASCAR any time soon. Refuting a story in Wednesday’s editions of the Los Angeles Times that speculated on Castroneves following former IRL stars Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti to NASCAR as early as the 2009 season, Castroneves said his comments were taken out of context. “It’s kind of strange to print a statement like that,” said Castroneves, who will start fourth in Sunday’s 92nd running of the Indy 500. “I did not understand much. I found my English is apparently getting worst. (They) definitely took it out of context.”(ESPN.com/AP)(5-22-2008)

Wheeler says ‘other factors’ had hand in retirement timing
CONCORD, N.C. - Humpy Wheeler didn’t want to have a drawn-out retirement party, but he did seem a little uncomfortable with the way his retirement was announced four days before the Coca-Cola 600, the final race for the president of Lowe’s Motor Speedway and parent company Speedway Motorsports Inc.

What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?

There is - and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.

It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

Used and endorsed by the Unser family, the winningest family in the history of ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing’. ‘Little Al’s diesel Ford Excursion mileage has increased from 13 to 17.3MPG. And recently named ‘The Official Fuel Reformulator of the Firestone Indy Lights Series’.

You can check out the details here: snipurl.com/29ohu-gazete

PS: In case you’re wondering, this IS NOT the magic “gas pill” you may have seen on TV. You’ve got to watch the videos to see just what an impact this is having on people’s lives:

Kyle Busch
No. 18 M&M’S Toyota Camry
How attractive is the Indy 500 to you and do you have a desire to run that event?
“It would be good. I’d like it and wouldn’t mind doing it. I’d have to get a test in it and see if I’m any good at driving those cars. I have no idea. I tend to jerk on the wheel a little too much so I’d probably end up trying to kill myself to be honest with you. I think it would be something that would be pretty fun in the future. I wouldn’t say it would be coming in the next five years or something, but probably after that. Plus, the (challenge) to do it is the time change. The time difference they have going on now with their start time being moved back. The (Coca-Cola) 600 has pretty much stayed at five or six, something like that. The time change just doesn’t quite work out right. Maybe some time we can get with Tony George and try to figure that back out a little bit and spread them back apart.”

Gordon, St. Amant Trucking This Weekend
Pro Cup Regulars To Run Mansfield 250

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-Gary St. Amant and Benny Gordon have combined to win the last four Sears Auto Center Northern Division titles. While they wait for their battle to resume with the running of the Sears Auto Center 150 at The Milwaukee Mile, the duo will do a little moonlighting this weekend in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Gordon and St. Amant will be attempting their first starts of the season in the Craftsman Truck Series at Mansfield Motorsports Park in the Mansfield 250.

It will be the first time St. Amant has driven a truck since the 1998 season.

“It was something my car owner, Dwayne Tatman, really wanted to do,” said St. Amant of the impromptu attempt. “Normally we’d have high expectations, but we just got the truck a month and half ago. We’re just hoping to get to the track on time and make the field. Our top priority is still to win the [Hooters Pro Cup] title. We’re just going to have a little fun.”

St. Amant, whose best truck finish is 11th at ORP, will be piloting the truck that Dennis Setzer took to Victory Lane last season at Mansfield.

Gordon’s appearance is the first of several scheduled truck events this season. Gordon made one start last season at Milwaukee and came home 15th. With the top-15 finish, Gordon’s expectations are pretty high for his 2008 debut.

The Winston, Or Whatever It’s Called Now
By Chris Allen(Chris Allen)
Back when a cigarette company was the Cup series’ title sponsor, the race was called “The Winston”. Since then, under Nextel and now Sprint, it seems like the race has had a different name every year. I don’t remember what it was called …
