SPEED™ Earns Record Ratings With NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV - 4 Million Viewer Tune In To See Charlotte Classic; Nielsen Ratings Up 6 Percent: SPEED scored its highest rating in network history, earning a Nielsen Media Research mark of 3.74 (2,701,000 households), up six percent from last year’s 3.53 (2,480,000 Households), making it the No. 1 network in basic cable during its coverage of Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV. The event, in its second of eight seasons on SPEED, peaked at 4.75 (3,430,000 households) and drew a network record four million viewers. “We are jacked up about seeing record ratings for the second consecutive year, and we are very aware that it is a total team effort that delivered these results,” said SPEED President Hunter Nickell. “Everyone at SPEED, everyone at Sprint, everyone at JHE Production Group, everyone at NASCAR, everyone at Lowe’s Motor Speedway puts maximum effort into this event and it shows. That said, we all will continue to set the bar higher each season, settling for nothing less than the coolest NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race experience possible.” SPEED pre- and post-race programming also delivered larger audiences in 2008 as Nielsen Ratings for both NASCAR RaceDay Built by the Home Depot and NASCAR Victory Lane were up from 2007. NASCAR Victory Lane jumped 20 percent from a 1.03 (721,000 households) to a record 1.28 (926,000 households) and NASCAR RaceDay has been up double digits from 2007 all season long. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race from Lowe’s Motor Speedway scored an average Nielsen Household Rating of 1.13 (817,000 households), a 41-percent increase over the 2007 event, which scored a .80 (563,000 households). The race peaked at 1.54 (1,112,000 households). An average of 1.1 million viewers watched the race, the most ever for the Charlotte event. Nielsen ratings for NCTS races on SPEED in 2008 are up 18 percent from 2007. Expanded All-Star content and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Watch and Win contest also delivered traffic and participation to SPEEDtv.com, as both visits and page views jumped by 100 percent over the current 30-day average daily traffic. - SPEED TV, Press Release

Harvick Gives Morgan Shepherd A Car - Jarrett Buys Him Tires
One racer giving to his fellow competitor has been part of the family atmosphere of NASCAR racing for 60 years. But the actions of Kevin and DeLana Harvick at this weekend’s Carquest Auto Parts 300 exemplify helping your fellow man. Kevin and DeLana have donated a Nationwide Series race car to fellow competitor Morgan Shepherd in an effort to keep the 66-year young “old-school” racer on the track a while longer. Sporting a new custom candied-apple green paint scheme, Shepherd has entered the car in this weekend’s 200-lap event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “I am just so thankful for Kevin and DeLana and their willingness to help me,” Shepherd said. “I just couldn’t believe it when they called and told me they were giving me a race car. I just didn’t know what to say. I am just so honored to have friends like the Harvicks, Tony Stewart, Matt Yocum and the Jarretts.”
Penske Racing Going For 300 Victories

Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard teamed in an American Le Mans Series winning effort last Sunday at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, to record Penske Racing’s 299th major win.

Kurt Busch On America’s Most Wanted
Kurt Busch will be featured on this Saturday night’s edition of “America’s Most Wanted,” the popular FOX- TV show hosted by John Walsh. “John was at the track filming on Friday and it was great to meet him and do the filming,” Kurt said of the shoot held Friday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “I was in my Miller Lite fire suit and we did a nice little interview first. Then I did the introduction to a segment where they are looking for a woman named Jenny Liang. She was living in Vegas and working at the Mirage Casino when she supposedly murdered her boyfriend and then went on the run. I really enjoyed spending the time with John and I hope that our efforts add support in helping them capture this woman. John has an entourage of about 20 people, with two armed guards following him at all times. With his show helping take down nearly 1,000 dangerous fugitives in the past 20 years, it’s pretty easy to understand why he has that kind of support crew.” The show airs Saturday at 9:00 p.m. EDT on FOX-TV.
Childress: Iowa Track Needs Race
NASCAR team owner Richard Childress heaped praise on Iowa Speedway Sunday before the U.S. Cellular 200. He also hinted he may go to bat for the facility with NASCAR officials regarding the possible future procurement of a Craftsman Truck Series and/or Nationwide Series event. “We would put a lot better race on here with the (Sprint) Cup (Series) cars than we do on some of the other race tracks,” said Childress, who’s current crop of Cup drivers includes Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton. “I think it would be a great track for the (Nationwide) cars. I was here last year watching the (Camping World Series) race and it was a great race. You can race from the top to the bottom, so it really works good.”

Humpy Wheelers to retire? Humpy Wheeler, the “P.T. Barnum” of NASCAR promotions, will retire and step down as president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway, The Associated Press has learned. This weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 will be Wheeler’s last race for Lowe’s Motor Speedway, two people familiar with the decision told the AP. They requested anonymity because an official announcement, which could come as early as Wednesday, has not yet been made. It was not immediately clear who will succeed Wheeler, who has managed the track for the past 33 years and was named president in 1980. Candidates include track owner Bruton Smith’s son, Marcus, the executive vice president of sales and marketing for Speedway Motorsports Inc., and Lauri Wilks, executive vice president of management and administration for LMS. Nicknamed “Humpy” because of the camel’s hump on a pack of Camel cigarettes his father was caught smoking, Wheeler was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006.(Associated Press/Jenna Fryer/ESPN.com)(5-21-2008)

Mayfield goes on 12-day tour of Iraq; ride at Dover?: Jeremy Mayfield left May 6 for 12 days where even if he got offered another NASCAR ride, he wouldn’t be able to accept it until he returned. Mayfield took a 12-day tour of Iraq where he, along with a few drag racers, visited three to seven bases a day to talk to troops stationed over there. Mayfield said he was impressed with what the soldiers are currently doing in Iraq in trying to rebuild the country. “I thought it would be a depressing deal, but it really wasn’t,” Mayfield said in a phone interview Tuesday. “All the soldiers, everybody from the guy on the front line through the commanding general, was just really upbeat, in a great mood. Everything was positive. … What got me was how many people re-enlisted to come back over.” A two-time Chase participant, Mayfield drove for Haas CNC Racing for the first seven events this year before parting ways with the team. He has had a few talks with other teams, but when the idea was presented to him, he opted to go on the goodwill trip to Iraq. “It’s something I am proud to say I did,” Mayfield said. “It’s probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I met a lot of great people there. As far as my career, I’ll go from here and see what happens. The timing was perfect on it. I was sitting here not having a ride, and I went and did it. I think I made a difference. I think it was more important than waiting around hoping somebody calls me. It’s hard for me to sit here and tell you what it means to the guys over there.” Many of the soldiers wanted to talk about racing with him, but Mayfield couldn’t stay awake to watch the races with the troops, which were televised in the early morning at bases that had television capability. I couldn’t believe there were that many Mayfield fans over there to start with, and on top that there were so many huge NASCAR fans,” Mayfield said. “It definitely was a humbling experience.” The driver admitted he was a little nervous about making the trip. He would see troops going to and from combat. The group of racers would take Blackhawk helicopters to each base, going from Baghdad to remote outposts in northern Iraq. “There were things that go on like we all expect,” Mayfield said. “Every day, there’s some kind of maneuvers with some of the insurgents where they will cover up a bomb here or there, and once in a while one of those would go off. About every night or so, outside in the desert, three or four guys would launch a rocket over into a base, and 99.9 percent of those either don’t make it or get blown away. … Overall I felt secure, but you still wonder because it’s busy there 24 hours a day nonstop, so you never know when you lay down to go to sleep at night. I got pretty used to it.” Now back home, Mayfield seems willing to wait for the right opportunity to get back in a race car. A 15-year veteran of the sport with five wins, Mayfield feels as if he has something to offer to a team. “I was part of the reason why I don’t have one – I’d rather not have one than run like I was running every week,” he said. “I’ve come to realize that. I don’t want any pity. When you go to Iraq, you really understand the true meaning of feeling sorry for something when you go into one of the hospitals. There’s a lot of people have got it worse off than we do. Going over there was very humbling. It makes you look at life a little bit different.”(SceneDaily), supposedly Mayfield will run the #40 Dodge at Dover on June 1st.(5-21-2008)
Aaron’s back on the #00 at LMS: Aaron’s Sales and Lease Ownership has signed on for primary sponsorship of the #00 Toyota Camry for this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with Michael McDowell. On Wednesday, he travels to Road Atlanta with David Reutimann and then tests at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) the first week of June. The following week he is at the Milwaukee Mile for a two-day test.(MWR PR)(5-21-2008)
#07 Toast to the Troops: Clint Bowyer’s #97-Jack Daniel’s Chevy will feature a special USO Toast to the Troops paint scheme for the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Jack Daniel’s and the USO joined together, beginning in 2005, to present the “Toast to the Troops” campaign, which gives Americans the opportunity to send special messages of support to the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces. These “toasts” are included in care packages the USO delivers to troops deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq and other overseas locations, as well as troops arriving and departing on rest and recuperation (R&R) flights. The care packages include an assortment of items specifically requested by service members, such as prepaid international calling cards, toiletries, sunscreen, playing cards, a disposable camera and snacks. Special “stuffing parties” have been held on military installations across the country where military spouses, USO volunteers and Jack Daniel’s employees added the “toasts” to care packages along with the other items. Since the “Toast to the Troops” campaign began, Jack Daniel’s and the USO have collected more than 60,000 messages of support that were included in care packages assembled at Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Gillem/Fort McPherson, Ga., Fort Hood, Texas, Scott Air Force, Mo., Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., Jacksonville Naval Station, Fla., and Quantico Marine Base, Va. In some instances, the care packages and messages were handed to service members as they were boarding planes for overseas deployment.(RCR PR)(5-21-2008)
Memorial Day Salute: Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 pre-race entertainment will feature an active and patriotic “Salute The Troops” theme. Among the planned activities are the presentation of 1,500 soldiers, plus an assault demonstration. Participating troops hail from Fort Bragg and represent the XVIII Airborne Corps, the 82nd Airborne Division, the United States Airborne Army Special Operations Command and the North Carolina National Guard. The 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus will perform, as will the Golden Knights — the U.S. Army Parachute Team. Members of the Rolling Thunder motorcycle group, which advocates for Prisoners of Wars and those Missing In Action, will ride a parade lap and make a special POW/MIA flag presentation. Also scheduled to appear — and perform — are NHRA Funny Car legend John Force, 200 bagpipers and Toyota’s Tundra Monster Truck.(5-21-2008)
Prerace participants for Coca-Cola 600: Lowe’s Motor Speedway officials have announced a lineup of special guests, including country music artist Darryl Worley, who will participate in pre-race ceremonies leading up to the Coca-Cola 600 Sprint Cup Series event Sunday. Worley will sing the national anthem prior to the Coca-Cola 600. The singer wrote “Have You Forgotten?” after a USO trip to entertain troops in Afghanistan. Dr. Robert H. Schuller, founder of the Orange Grove, Calif.-based Crystal Cathedral church, will lead race fans in the pledge of allegiance before the Coca-Cola 600. Dr. William Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., will deliver the invocation before the race. The multi-faceted Thierfelder is a licensed psychologist who was a medalist at the 1981 U.S. Track & Field Indoor National Championship, trained as a high-jumper for the 1984 Olympics and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Sports Psychology Registry. Tickets for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 start at $39 and can be purchased online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com or by calling the Lowe’s Motor Speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS.(LMS)(5-20-2008)

What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?
There is - and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.
It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

Herd Racing Joins Day Enterprises for Select Races: Herd Racing LLC, a Nationwide Series team based in West Virginia, has announced that it will pool its resources for the 2008 race season with Day Enterprises in an effort to introduce fans of Marshall University to racing. The team will enter its Dodge Charger race car featuring driver Brett Rowe in this weekend’s Carquest 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The car will carry the #05 and will feature sponsors from both Herd Racing and Day Enterprises, the teams announced. “We found the sponsorship hunt to be much tougher than we anticipated it would be,” said Herd Racing President Dana Tomes. “Brett was already driving for Day Enterprises and he has a good relationship there so it just makes sense for both teams to work together this year.” Tomes said Herd Racing continues to seek sponsorship in hopes of running full time in one of NASCAR’s three touring series next season, but a shaky economy has left those plans unclear. The team had originally planned on running 8-10 Nationwide Series events this year in preparation for a full 2009 race schedule.(Herd Racing PR)(5-20-2008)

Team Lining Up Replacement Drivers for Nashville Weekend: Several Nationwide Series teams are lining up backup drivers for the upcoming Sprint Cup/Nationwide non-companion weekend June 6-8. The Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville Superspeedway will be held June 7 at 7:30 p.m. EDT, four hours after qualifying is to be held. Sprint Cup practice at Pocono ends at 12:20 p.m., cutting it close for Cup drivers who want to fly to Nashville. Also, Cup qualifying is at 3:40 p.m. June 6, with two Nationwide practices that day, at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Jason Hedlesky will fill in for Carl Edwards in Roush Fenway Racing’s #60 at Nashville, though whether Edwards will fly back and forth has yet to be decided, the team said. Auggie Vidovich is the backup for Edwards’ teammate, #6-David Ragan, though Ragan will try to make it to Nashville in time for qualifying. Greg Biffle won’t fly into Nashville for practice June 6, but since the #16 Ford needs to make the race via qualifying, Biffle will try to make it for time trials. His backup is Casey Atwood. Josh Wise is the backup driver for #99-David Reutimann. Backup plans for Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Braun Racing’s Kyle Busch are unknown, both teams said. Busch is trying to run all three NASCAR national series race that weekend, so he won’t be in Nashville on June 6.(SceneDaily.com)(5-20-2008)

Balance will be the name of the game Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway according to Joe Balash, NASCAR Nationwide Series director.“Getting the car ready for both short and long runs will be the determining factor for the teams,” he said.“Some drivers will have their cars balanced well early and will be stout during the short runs. They’ll also be anticipating cautions.”“But if those cautions don’t come, there will be quite a bit of passing throughout the field and you’ll see new leaders emerge because their cars were set up especially for longer runs.”“As 1.5-mile tracks go, this is a very fast track.”“On top of all that, there’s the added pressure of securing bragging rights with a win here. It’s the home track for most of our racers, which makes it very important.”(NASCAR) (05-20-08)

The Inside Line by Tim Stephens

The Inside Line by Tim Stephens Among the most enduring legends of baseball’s Leo Durocher is his often-quoted utterance “Nice guys finish last”. Leo the Lip’s thoughts took a hardy pounding recently as Matt Crafton rolled to victory lane in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway near Charlotte, N.C. Crafton’s dogged pursuit of victory in the NCTS had become a weekly story for those that cover the circuit. Race after race, week after week, the pundits picked and pondered when the breakthrough day would come. The answer was last week in Charlotte and the final count will show it came in career start No. 178

Cayuga Motor Speedway: Canada’s Crown Jewel
Cayuga Motor Speedway has been the site for many of Canada’s top motorsports events since its opening in 1966.
Top names in racing have competed at the track over the years including Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, Tony Stewart and Darrell Waltrip.
The .625-mile semi-banked oval was a staple track of the CASCAR Super Series and has become that for the Canadian Tire Series as well. The track hosted the first-ever series event last May 26, won by Don Thomson Jr. Derek Lynch earned the victory last Sept. 1 at the facility which covers nearly 300 acres with 1,500 campsites. This will be the third series event at Cayuga.
The one-lap qualifying record for the Canadian Tire Series at Cayuga is held by D.J. Kennington and was set during time trials for that inaugural event. He posted a lap time of 20.785 seconds which translates to an average speed of 108.251 mph.
A Quick Look at the 2008 Season
The first year of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series exceeded every expectation. Now, it is time to build on that success and grow the series while establishing a solid foundation for the future.
Defending champion Andrew Ranger does not have the element of surprise on his side as he did a year ago. He will look to maintain his mastery of the road course tracks where he finished first or second in all four last season. His performance on the ovals was solid as well, but he aims at a victory in 2008.
Expect to see Don Thomson Jr. challenging Ranger every step of the way. Thomson was none too happy with his performance in 2007, despite finishing fourth in the point standings.
The Canadian Tire Series, once again, finds its strong suit is experience. Several veteran drivers return with realistic
championship goals. The likes of Mark Dilley, Peter Gibbons and Ron Beauchamp Jr. exhibited their potential at varying times in 2007, but were not able to capture the consistency needed for a championship.
The schedule is very similar to last season’s. A notable addition is a trip to Autodrome St-Eustache in Quebec for the summer’s second event. The western swing ends on July 26 in Edmonton and teams will have to travel eastward across the country for an Aug. 2 date at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve alongside the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
The series also will see some non-Ontario teams increase their participation this season. Jason White, racing out of Sun Peaks, B.C., plans to make as many races as possible. Alberta’s Todd Nichol is looking to compete in some eastern events as well. Donald Chisholm, from the maritime province of Nova Scotia, is stepping up his program after a successful debut last season.
What to Watch for in 2008
A Man Possessed … Five-time CASCAR Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. had a disappointing season in 2007, at least in his mind. He finished fourth in the final point standings and that was not at all to his liking. Just minutes following the final race of 2007, the tireless veteran all but guaranteed a better performance in 2008.
Road Course Dominance … Defending series champ Andrew Ranger finished first or second in all four road course events a year ago and was in position to win all four. His three second-place finishes were the result of last-lap passes. Can that same success be duplicated in 2008?
Carrying the Momentum … Derek Lynch finished the 2007 season as strong or stronger than any other driver. He closed out the season with four consecutive top 10s, three of which were top-five efforts, including his Sept. 1 win at Cayuga.
The Long Haul … The two western Canada races will be held on July 19 and 26 in Vernon, B.C., and Edmonton, respectively. Just one week after the Edmonton date, the series has a date at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, alongside the NASCAR Nationwide Series, nearly 3,800 kilometers away.
A Wider Scope … Last year, the core competitors were virtually all Ontario-based teams. In 2008, look for a larger footprint with the western teams of Jason White and Todd Nichol increasing their participation and also, Donald Chisholm, who had a solid debut at his home track last season. The Antigonish, Nova Scotia-based driver also has plans to enter more events this season.
TSN is, Again, Television Home for Canadian Tire Series
For the second consecutive season, TSN, Canada’s Sports Leader, will be the exclusive broadcast partner of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio.
TSN will nationally televise 13 one-hour broadcasts – one for each of the eries’ 13 races. Coverage gets underway on May 30 at midnight ET with the Crown Jewel 200, the first race of the season, taking place on the speedy .625-mile oval at Cayuga International Speedway.
The shows will be produced by James Robinson Associates Ltd. and will include race coverage, driver interviews and features. Dave Bradley will provide the play-by-play alongside colour analyst Billy Rowse Jr. Todd Lewis rounds out the broadcast team as pit reporter. The majority of race coverage will air in High Definition.
TSN’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series coverage complements the network’s all-encompassing NASCAR programming, which includes full-season action of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series.
The early season will be highlighted by the first visit to Autodrome St-Eustache in Quebec. A trip to western Canada in mid-July will see visits to SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C., and to Edmonton for the Rexall Edmonton Indy.
The season will culminate with a September trip to the maritime province of Nova Scotia and the season finale at Kawartha Speedway.
The high-banked .333-mile track at Riverside International Speedway in Antigonish, N.S., is a favorite among the competitors. The track is a scale model of the legendary Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
