The All-Star Race wasn’t exactly the snoozefest we’ve seen in other races, but it wasn’t exactly the crashfest some were predicting. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening of racing to me, anyway.
Here’s today’s abbreviated edition of the Stock Car Gazette… sorry, I just flat ran out of time to add more to it.

Track Trash – Sprint All-Star Race
by: Boyd McPherson
Another All-Star Race behind us and another cool $1M handed out to the winner. Although many past All-Star events resembled a “Days of Thunder” style of racing during the final few laps as drivers were already imagining themselves rolling around in a huge pile of bills, Kasey Kahne glided under the checkered flag with no challengers for the cash.

Busch plans three-state, three-race NASCAR weekend
Kyle Busch still hasn’t completely given up on the possibility of contending for the championship in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck series this season. Kasey Kahne Wins All-Star Race
Kasey Kahne won the Sprint All-Star race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Saturday night after he was voted into the race by the fans. Kahne finished fifth in the All-Star Showdown, the qualifying race before the main event, and only the top two drivers transferred to the All-Star race. But a third driver was added to the big show by a vote of the fans. Kahne was headed to his home to watch the All-Star race when he was informed that he had won the fan vote and would also transfer.
Kahne was forced to start at the rear of the field and through the four race segments — and with the help of a final pit stop when the team called for no fresh tires, Kahne took the lead with only 16 laps remaining. “That’s what we had to do; it was our only shot at winning the race,” said Kahne. “I knew that the longer the runs went, the better our Budweiser Dodge got. I thought we were getting better and some other cars were getting worse. We did that (stop and go pit) and came out in second. Denny Hamlin got a great start and we had to battle a little bit and get back out front.” Kahne faced a stiff challenge from Greg Biffle, who had taken two tires to start the fourth and final segment, but was able to hold Biffle off and then coasted to his first ever All-Star race victory.

Driver Age Limit Won’t Change
NASCAR won’t alter the age limit for next season, a series official said Friday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “It’s not something we’re looking at to put in place in 2009 if we even put it in place,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR VP of racing operations. Series officials had said before the season they were looking into the possibility of raising the minimum age requirement for the Sprint Cup series from 18 to 21. “We got some good feedback from the owners and have kind of taken that and evaluated that and decided that’s not something we really want to pursue right now,” O’Donnell said.

NASCAR Now Expands Monday for Roundtable Discussion of All-Star Weekend The Monday, May 19, edition of NASCAR Now will expand to an hour and will include host Allen Bestwick leading a roundtable discussion with ESPN analysts and reporters of the weekend’s Sprint Cup All-Star Race at Lowe?s Motor Speedway as well as other NASCAR news. Office Depot to MWR? UPDATE 2 AFLAC to be primary for #99?: hearing Office Depot, currently the sponsor for #99-Carl Edwards, is considering a move to Michael Waltrip Racing with driver #00-Michael McDowell. UPS has been rumored as a possible sponsor for Edwards and Roush Racing in 2009.(5-8-2008)
UPDATE Exclusive negotiation period ends between Roush & Office Depot: The exclusive negotiating period between Office Depot and Roush Fenway Racing in regards to sponsorship of Carl Edwards beyond his season has expired, Office Depot Public Relations Director Mindy Kramer confirmed Friday afternoon. “We’re looking at options for 2009, including Carl and other things at Roush nothing to report yet,” Kramer said at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “When you’re talking about a significant investment, it’s difficult to get those things done in a short period of time,” said Kramer, who declined to say whether Office Depot had started talking to other teams besides Roush Fenway. “Carl was not signed until almost the very end of our period of exclusive talks, so that was a hindrance to us being able to have some meaningful discussions. How do you have meaningful discussions with a team when he may have ended up somewhere else?” The company, which has official NASCAR status as well, wants to stay in the driver sponsorship side of the sport. “We like this sport; we don’t want to drag this out,” Kramer said. “It’s an important decision, and there’s a lot to go into it. We don’t pay attention to the rumors and speculation out there. … We just try to focus on what’s going to be right for our business in 2009 and beyond. Obviously we’ve had a great four-year relationship with Carl and have had tremendous success.” Office Depot sponsors the car for 23 races, and other companies, including some Office Depot business partners such as Aflac, fill out the rest of the schedule.(SceneDaily)(5-17-2008)
UPDATE 2 - AFLAC signs to be Edwards full sponsor in 2009? hearing that AFLAC, already a sponsor of Carl Edwards, also had an exclusive window of negotiation once Office Depot passed on sponsorship with Roush Fenway and AFLAC has signed to become the new full-time sponsor of the #99 Ford in 2009.(5-19-2008)
Gibbs tested own engines in All-Star race: Joe Gibbs Racing used its engines in the all-star race as opposed to the engines it receives from Toyota Racing Development. The team plans to go back to TRD motors for the Coca-Cola 600. Since the all-star race is a non-points race, it provides teams a chance to test equipment without fear that a failure will hurt them in the points.(Roanoke Times), #20-Stewart had to change engines before the race, #11-Hamlin and #18-Busch both lost engines during the All-Star race, all three had rocker-arm problems.(5-19-2008)
More changes at Robby Gordon Motorsports? hearing that General Manager Ed Guzzo and #7 Robby Gordon Motorsports have parted ways recently. Plus been told that RGM is looking for primary sponsorship opportunities on the #7 Dodge for races at Infineon Raceway [expect him to run upfront there] and the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Landscaper pulled from lake at Jarrett home UPDATED passes away: A landscaper working at #44-Dale Jarrett’s Lake Hickory [NC] home was pulled unconscious from the water Friday and was in cardiac arrest when he was rushed to the hospital, authorities said. The man, whom authorities would not name, was mowing the lawn at Jarrett’s waterfront house in Hickory, said Catawba County Emergency Services Director David Weldon, when the riding lawnmower went into the lake. The man was pulled from the water, Weldon said, and had gone into cardiac arrest when emergency rescuers arrived. He was not breathing when he was taken to the hospital, authorities said. The lawn worker’s condition was not available Friday evening.(Charlotte Observer)(5-17-2008)
UPDATE: A man mowing a lawn at NASCAR star Dale Jarrett’s Hickory lake house died Friday after he toppled into the water and his lawnmower fell on top of him. The man was mowing the lawn on a riding lawnmower at the home on Forty-sixth Avenue, NE, at about 2:45 p.m. Friday when he ended up in the water and underneath the mower, said Capt. Josh Randolph, with the St. Stephens Fire Department. “His coworkers pulled him out of the water and onto the lawn before we got there,” Randolph said. “I’m not sure how long he was under water.” Randolph said the young man, who worked for a lawn care company, was not breathing and had no pulse. He was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center, where a hospital official later confirmed he had died.(Hickory Record)(5-18-2008)
JR Motorsorts could move to Cup: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. from a weekly top 12 drivers press conference:
THE OWNERSHIP THING, WHEN YOU’RE OUT THERE RACING WITH BRAD KESELOWSKI, ARE THERE THINGS THAT GO THROUGH YOUR MIND AND ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT HIM OR ABOUT THE RACE? “Well, I get mad when he messes up and I see him in a wreck or something. But normally I just hope he’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing and running good and having a good night. But his night doesn’t go right or something happens to the car, it’s sort of bums you out a little bit and it’s hard to revert back to concentrating on what you’re trying to do with your car.”
IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU’LL MOVE UP TO THE CUP LEVEL WITH THAT TEAM ANYTIME? “I used to say no way, no way. But it’s almost as expensive to run in the Nationwide Series. And their going to bring a CoT in and we won’t be able to race in the Nationwide Series with the CoT probably. That’ll just be too expensive to switch all that over.”
WOULD YOU DO IT AS EARLY AS NEXT YEAR? “Yeah, maybe. If the right opportunity comes along with the right sponsorship and driver, we’d love to do it. And it would cost the same amount of money to do that, as it is to run the Nationwide Series. It’s harder to get sponsorships. And the CoT program is going to be too expensive for me to justify creating a whole new program with CoT stuff, so I’d just as soon go into the Cup Series or get out of the Nationwide Series altogether.”
COULD YOU GET MARTIN TRUEX JR. IN THAT CAR? “No. Why would he want to come drive for me? He’s in good stuff now and he’s going to have great opportunities from other people. And I would never do that to him (laughter). For the first year coming out of the box, man we’ll struggle like hell. Come on, man. He’s going to have deals offered to him by these great companies around here and from DEI. I’ll be at the bottom of that list, right there with Haas and a couple of other people (laughter). I don’t know with Tony (Stewart) if he goes over there (Haas), he might be able to talk Martin into it. But I don’t know man. I mean no way would I even do that to Martin, even if he wanted to.”(GM Racing PR)(5-17-2008)

What if I were to tell you that there’s a tested(by numerous corporate accounts), proven way that you could start using *today* to save 7-19%(that would be from 28 to 75 cents based on today’s $3.95/gal regular price) on your gas bill for filling up your car? And what if you could put money in your pocket by making this product available to others?
There is - and tens of thousands of Americans are using it right now to save money.
It’s been on the news, and there are countless videos on YouTube that prove it, including great pieces by FOX local stations in Dallas and Phoenix. However, surprisingly few people even know about it.

Straighten them out, NASCAR to tell Cup teams
DAVID POOLE
The Charlotte Observer
Saturday, May. 17, 2008
CONCORD, N.C. - Expect NASCAR to tell Sprint Cup teams that they’ve gone far enough - and in some cases, too far - with making crooked cars.
Sprint Cup Series director John Darby said Saturday that teams will get a memo, likely this week, telling them to “clean up” the way they’re turning their wheels to help the cars handle better.
“They need some of that, but there are some of them that have pushed it,” Darby said.
The rear wheels on some of the cars were turned to the point that some were having difficulty being pushed onto the scales used in inspection.

KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger) Winner
CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU WON THE ALL-STAR RACE? “I wouldn’t have believed it until about lap 60 or so. At that point, our car was getting better and better. We were making the right adjustments. In the final 50 to 75 laps we were pretty loose. We made one small adjustment with the track bar, and left the tires on it. I knew we were quick the longer the runs went. I thought if we could get by some cars, the car was good enough to win.”
RAY EVERNHAM (Co-owner, No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger)
YOUR THOUGHTS ON WINNING THE SPRINT ALL-STAR RACE? “That was awesome and a really great effort put forth by Kenny Francis and all the guys on that team. I really want to thank the fans because if it wasn’t for their vote, we wouldn’t have been in the race. We won the race.”
KENNY FRANCIS (Technical Director, No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger)
HOW GOOD DOES THIS WIN FEEL? “That was an awesome run for the Budweiser Dodge, and it’s a lot of validation for all the hard work all those guys on this team have put into this program. We have to really thank the fans for voting us into the race- that makes it pretty special. We’re really excited to win for all the fans that voted us into the race. We really didn’t do anything special as far as pit strategy. We just kind of worked our way through the field.”

This article has the entire schedule for the weekend starting Thursday afternoon at the Sears at Richland Mall at 4:30PM and the downtown festival and hauler parade which will end up at the back gate off SR 545(Olivesburg Road). Camping sites are also available off Olivesburg Road behind turn 2, so if you are coming bring your RV or camper. Thoughts on the 2008 Sprint All-Star Race: The 2008 edition of the Sprint All-Star Race was at once interesting and entertaining, but I have several questions that need to be answered and comments that have to be made.

Is the Sprint All-Star Race Really an All-Star Event?: There has been rumbling and grumbling about this weekend’s Sprint All-Star Race. I really don’t understand all the controversy. The race is just an exhibition race, much like baseball’s All-Star Game and similar events in the NBA and NFL. It’s nothing more. , so I began to see who was missing.

NASCAR Top 10 Power Rankings: Darlington: Kyle Busch: Despite a loose lug nut problem that dropped him to 23rd on lap 141, Busch recovered to win handily in Darlington, his third win this year, then took a bow to a chorus of boos. Busch, in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota sporting the new Indiana Jones movie paint scheme, peppered the Darlington walls often, seemingly using them less as a barrier and more as a guide.
