There might be duplicates of this edition for some of you who receive the e-mail version … the Monday morning edition usually is larger than the rest of the week. I am actively researching some other mailing list options. Hopefully I can find a better solution.
We are remembering Adam Petty today… we lost him eight years ago.
Here’s the latest NASCAR and ARCA stock car racing news in today’s Stock Car Gazette.

Busch outlasts Darlington and claims victory
Kyle Busch won the battle of attrition Saturday night as NASCAR’s least popular driver overcame a pit-road penalty and several scrapes with the wall to win at Darlington Raceway. Busch’s third Sprint Cup Series victory of the season hardly thrilled the crowd, which viciously booed him in prerace introductions and hadn’t softened by the time he [...]

Stewart does a 180 on Goodyear, praises Darlington tire
Vocal Goodyear critic Tony Stewart had only nice things to say Friday about the tire manufacturer’s choice for the newly repaved Darlington Raceway. Stewart was harsh about Goodyear after the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this year and has been a thorn in Goodyear’s side after other races. But Stewart praised the company for bringing [...]

This year’s $1-million-to-win event is Saturday night, May 17, at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The press conference will take place at the Wachovia Atrium located at 301 S. Kyle Busch Wins At Darlington
Kyle Busch can’t be stopped. Loose lugnuts, missing lugnuts, penalties, not to mention that Busch complained about not having much of a brake pedal and at times the car wouldn’t turn and two encounters with the wall, he looked to be indestructible and unstoppable. Busch was leading the race when he pitted on lap 140 during the third caution and was penalized for a missing lugnut. Busch restarted at the end of the longest line (29th) and charged through the field, putting on a driving clinic in the process. Busch retook the lead on lap 270 and there was no catching him from there.
In his fourth try, Busch became the youngest driver to ever win at Darlington Raceway. Busch led a total of 169 laps on the way to his first victory at the historic track, his third win this year and his seventh win in 125 career races. It was the fourth victory for Toyota in 2008.
Carl Edwards finished second with Jeff Gordon coming home in the third spot. Except for some minor scrapping of the outside wall, Dale Earnhardt Jr. kept his nose clean and finished fourth. A great run by David Ragan vaulted him into the fifth position — he was followed by Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Travis Kvapil, Dave Blaney and Jeff Burton to round out the top ten. The race featured 8 cautions for 30 laps. There were 35 lead changes among 15 different drivers. 24 different cars took a total of 40 hits to the outside wall (40 Darlington Stripes).
The Sprint Cup Series is off next week, that is for a points paying race, but next Saturday night the Sprint All-Star race will run under the lights at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The Sprint Cup Series returns to action on Sunday, May 25th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. That race is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM / Eastern Time on Fox.
Terry Labonte To Fill In For Petty
Terry Labonte will be a teammate to his brother Bobby at Petty Enterprises starting next month, pending sponsor approval. Terry (and Chad McCumbee) will drive the No. 45 when Kyle Petty gets out for the summer. Petty is scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 and then miss the next seven races (one for his daughter’s wedding and the other six to work as an analyst for TNT). McCumbee likely will drive at Dover and Chicago. Terry Labonte likely will drive in the other five races. Labonte’s addition is key for Petty Enterprises because the No. 45 car is not in the top 35 in car owner points. Labonte’s second of his two titles came in 1996 — that makes him the most recent champion not in the top 35 since Bill Elliott’s title came in 1988. Thus, Labonte would be guaranteed a starting spot each time he starts, while the Wood Brothers would lose that even with Elliott in the seat.

Franchitti’s status still unclear: #40-Dario Franchitti continues to heal from the broken left ankle he sustained during a Nationwide Series race at Talladega last month, with no firm timetable for his return. “There’s not really been any change,” Franchitti said Saturday. “I’m just waiting for the swelling to go down and the pain to go away, and for the fracture to heal. When those things go away, I’ll be able to drive the car again.” Sterling Marlin drove Chip Ganassi Racing’s #40 Dodge at Darlington, and could do so again at Charlotte if Franchitti is not ready. Franchitti has been monitoring the amount of pressure he puts on his ankle. After a couple hours of walking around, Franchitti elevates his leg and uses a boot that circulates cold water through it to alleviate the swelling. He had considered testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but the doctor nixed that idea. Franchitti obliged, remembering how he rushed back from injuries earlier in his career to mixed results. He recently traveled to Indianapolis – not to ponder racing in the Indy 500, where he is the reigning champion, but to get fitted for a carbon fiber brace that supports his ankle. He’ll use the brace when he returns to the car.(SceneDaily)(5-12-2008)
Nemechek’s Mom OK: Martha Nemechek, Joe’s mother [#78-Joe Nemechek], was not able to take part in Mother’s Day ceremonies at Darlington Raceway on Saturday night as she had knee surgery Saturday morning. She is doing fine and thanks everyone for the well wishes.(Furniture Row Racing)(5-12-2008)
Burton still has run every lap: UPDATE: #31-Jeff Burton is the lone Sprint Cup driver who has completed every lap (3,297) of competition this season. Burton also has completed 77.5% of the total laps (2,555 of 3,297) running in the top 15 and leads all drivers with the most runs on the lead lap (3,277 of 3,297).(RCR)(5-8-2008)
UPDATE: Burton completed all 367 laps at Darlington Saturday night.(5-11-2008)
Labonte supposedly agrees to contract extension with Petty’s UPDATE 2: Bobby Labonte has reached an agreement to remain in the #43 car at Petty Enterprises after this season, sources told ESPN.com on Saturday. Labonte has been widely speculated as a candidate to drive the fourth car at Richard Childress Racing, but Petty officials have remained adamant that he will spend the rest of his career with the organization and that he is determined to be the driver that puts the 43 back into Victory lane. David Hovis, a spokesman for Petty Enterprises, said the team had nothing to announce Saturday about Labonte’s future. “We still remain 100% convinced that Bobby will be with Petty Enterprises next season,” Hovis said. Sources said Labonte’s new deal will be announced as soon as details concerning a new sponsor are worked out. General Mills, Labonte’s current sponsor, will be on the fourth car at RCR next season.
Robbie Loomis, the vice president for racing operations at Petty, has been the most outspoken on Labonte’s commitment to Petty Enterprises. He remained that way on Saturday. “As far as I know Bobby Labonte will be with us for a long time,” he said before the Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway. “I feel confident where we’re at with Petty Enterprises and with Bobby. In due time Petty Enterprises will have a lot of announcements coming forward.” One is that a Petty has finalized a deal with New York-based Medallion Financial as a business partner. Loomis said that could come within the next month to six weeks. The other concerns Labonte’s new sponsor. General Mills, Labonte’s current sponsor, will be on the fourth car at RCR next season. Loomis said negotiations for a new sponsor are going well, noting Labonte’s “brand is clean like the Petty’s.”(ESPN.com), one rumored sponsor for the #43 team has been Caterpillar, whose deal with Bill Davis Racing and the #22 Toyota runs out at the end of 2008.(5-3-2008)
UPDATE 2: from an ESPN.com post from #43 crew chief Jeff Meendering: “As for reports that Bobby Labonte has signed with the team, I don’t think that anything is set in stone there. They are getting really close on working everything out. But to say anything is set in stone might have been some speculation. When everything started blowing up with that story, the guys on our team never paid any attention to that. We have really good management here that takes care of that and allows us to go to the track and race. I still feel like Bobby will be here next year, but I know they’re not totally done with it. I think they’re getting close, though.”(ESPN.com)(5-10-2008)
John Andretti gets Indy 500 ride: John Andretti will attempt to qualify for his ninth Indianapolis 500 in the #24 Roth Racing car. Andretti, who started 24th and finished 30th last year in a Panther Racing-prepared car in his first Indy 500 since 1994, will replace Jay Howard in the seat for the race. Howard, the 2006 Firestone Indy Lights champion, passed the Rookie Orientation Program earlier in the week and practiced May 6. He has finishes of 22nd, 14th, 13th and 13th in IndyCar Series races this season. “As a result of the days lost due to weather, and losing our chief engineer (David Cripps) days before the start of this month, we found ourselves behind the 8-ball,” team president Margaret Roth said. “John brings with him a wealth of experience, which can help us build two competitive cars for the 500. Jay will be back at Milwaukee. He has our full support. He’s a great driver.”
“I want to feel it out a little bit, and see what we can do,” Andretti said on the way to pit lane for the tail end of practice preceding qualifications for the first 11 spots in the 33-car field. He topped 220 mph on three laps. Team owner-driver Marty Roth will attempt to qualify for his fourth 500-Mile Race in the #25 car. He has a high finish of 24th in 2004.(Roth Racing), Andretti skipped Darlington and Lowe’s testing to find an Indy 500 ride and Jeff Green attempted and failed to get the #34 Chevy into the race at Darlington.(5-10-2008)

Bodine to run Nationwide race at Darlington UPDATE 2 Brings home 4th place finish: After starting from the 15th position, Todd Bodine brought the #03 Germain Racing Toyota home with a respectable 4th place finish. Todd’s comments: “We actually had a car to win and I goofed up and got up in the wall on three and four when I was behind Matt (Kenseth) and that really messed it up. It took the right front fender and pushed it in and then I pushed after that. We had a great night, great pit stops — the guys doing a hell of a job and just proud to be here racing. It’s great to be able to finish a Nationwide race in the top-five with all of these Cup guys. It just shows this old truck team is pretty tough.”(Toyota Motorsports PR)(5-10-2008)

STENHOUSE, JR., SCORES FIRST ARCA RE/MAX SERIES WIN OFF STRONG KENTUCKY RESTART
SPARTA, Ky. – Roush Fenway Racing rookie Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., and his No. 99 Ford used a solid restart on Lap 107 of 112 to steal the race lead from Scott Speed and the No. 2 Red Bull Toyota and drive away to his first ARCA RE/MAX Series win in front of 10,273 “Drive Smart! Buckle-Up Kentucky 150” fans at Kentucky Speedway tonight.
Stenhouse, Jr., led the closing six laps before crossing the finish line 0.374 of a second ahead of Scott Speed in the No. 2 Red Bull Toyota. The margin marked the third-closest finish in the series 16 Kentucky Speedway races and the second straight May win for the Roush Fenway No. 99 at the track. Current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Erik Darnell took top honors last season.
“We’ve had good runs the last few weeks, so to finally get a win was just awesome. It was pretty tough. I’ve never really led a restart in one of these stock cars, and, actually those last few restarts when we were behind him (Speed) were the best restarts I’ve ever had in a stock car. I’m just trying to get better ever week, and learn as much as I can,” Stenhouse, Jr., said.
“This is a special win compared to the sprint cars I’ve won in, and means the most to me to finally get a win in a stock car. I can’t say enough about this Ford Fusion and the Roush 8 Engines, they really ran down the straightaways tonight.
“There’s a lot of competition here, and a lot of good cars in the ARCA/REMAX Series, but it’s getting better and better for us every week. It was another good night for points for us, and we’re just going to try to keep the momentum up going to Toledo. . I’m just glad we got this one, and hopefully there are more to come,” he added.
Ryan Fischer took third in the No. 25 TufTruckdirect.com/Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet, Ken Butler III wheeled to a fourth-place finish in the No. 22 Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine and John Wes Townley completed the top-five in the No. 09 John Wes Townley Zaxby’s/SPS/BB&T Ford.
The Roush Fenway driver spoiled what looked to Speed’s night. Speed seized the race lead on Lap 52 from Jake Francis and his No. 48 Dodge and led until Lap 106 when his solid run was ended by a series of late cautions.
The race restarted at total of four times in the closing 14 laps. Speed managed to hold point on all but the final restart, when his No. 2 experienced mechanical difficulty.
“Our Fuel strategy was fine. The only problem was on like the original green-white-checker. We got off to a nice little lead, but we broke third gear. So, the rest of the restarts they kept doing the green-white-checker and the gear was destroyed. It was a challenge. We definitely had a fast car. We should have won,” Speed said.
Tonight’s results should lead to a shake up in the series standings. Leader Matt Carter closed out the race 29th in his No. 46 Ford and Frank Kimmel, who entered the race second in the standings, placed 13th. Carter entered the race with a 35-point lead over Kimmel. Stenhouse was third in the standings and 95 points back to start the night.
Kentucky Speedway goes “old school” for the May 24 Frank Kimmel Enduro Nationals II. Sixty-eight drivers made up the largest starting field in Kentucky Speedway field last season that treated fans to five-wide racing at times.
Tickets can be reserved online through the Tickets pages of this Web site, by phone at 888-652-RACE (7223), through Meijer stores and Tickets.com outlets and by visiting the Kentucky Speedway ticket offices at 400 Buttermilk Pike, Suite 100, in Ft. Mitchell, Ky., next to the Montgomery Inn Restaurant or the Sparta, Ky., Fan Center located off of Interstate 71 Exit 57 and Ky. Hwy. 35 N.

A Motivated Kyle Busch Destroys Competition At Darlington
by Ron Felix
Busch Whacker: Kyle Busch got his Darlington stripe in the Dodge Challenger 500. Not only did he get the stripe, he beat it into his car. The race was one of the fastest races run at this track as Busch when leading kept a 3 second distance between him and the field.

Tony Stewart Dominates the Diamond Hill Plywood 200: Tony Stewart dominated the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington leading over 85 laps. No one knew how the new track surface was going to be at race time and the track, too tough to tame, did not disappoint. Stewart survived a wild race that saw the pole sitter wreck on the first lap and seven of the top ten drivers in points experience some sort of problem

Drivers: The Price of Admission just went up!: Last Saturday’s race at Richmond International Raceway in the southern state of Virginia was the setting for penalties handed down faster than you can say “rapid release gel†by NASCAR. A look at the big picture reveals two incidents in particular might prove to be worth nothing.

28th place…yes! (Morgan Shepherd): Normally, finishing 28th in a race isn’t an accomplishment. But for Morgan Shepherd and the Faith Motorsports team, finishing 28th last weekend at Richmond was almost as good as a win. Faith Motorsports has no major sponsorship backing.

The next American NASCAR Idol: For the past seven years, American Idol has spun controversy and television ratings, all the while bringing top musical talent to the general public. In retrospect, major league sports like NASCAR, have been bringing talented competitors to a grand stage for centuries.

Testing Impressions : Charlotte, NC – Testing has always been important to NASCAR race teams, but this week’s unscheduled session at Lowes Motor Speedway seems to have played an even more important role. While one could look at this as testing for the upcoming All-Star Challenge race and the Memorial Day’ Coca Cola 600
