Darlington Goodyear Tire Notes
With the complete re-pave of Darlington Raceway since last season, Goodyear has tested extensively at the track and brought a new combination of left- and right-side tires for teams to race on this weekend — Goodyear ran it’s first two-day test at Darlington with drivers Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman in mid-March, and settled on it’s right-side tire recommendation during that session — the tire manufacturer scheduled a one-day continuation test with the same drivers for early-April, and confirmed it’s left-side recommendation at that session — Darlington is the only track at which NASCAR teams are scheduled to run this specific combination of left- and right-side tire codes this season — however, teams will run this right-side code (D-4130) with a different left-side code at Charlotte later this month — teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will run the same tire codes this weekend — as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Darlington — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Fuel Cost Affecting Teams
As gas prices soar across the country, the thought of paying $6.25 a gallon would make any consumer cringe. Yet that’s what it costs in NASCAR, where race teams use a special Sunoco 260 GTX unleaded fuel to fill their cars. Although the gas is free — part of Sunoco’s agreement as NASCAR’s official fuel supplier — it doesn’t mean car owners and drivers aren’t feeling the pain at the pump. “It affects all of us, anybody that’s in business,” said car owner Richard Childress. “Getting our cars to the racetracks costs a ton in gas money for the haulers. Bringing our people to the tracks, the rising costs of jet fuel. It’s very, very expensive to do what we’re doing.” Childress, owner of a highly successful race team, isn’t complaining. Nor are the drivers who pull in multimillion dollar salaries and don’t flinch at $85 fill-ups on their luxury SUV’s. But no one in NASCAR is immune to the weakening economy and rising costs on fuel. Just because they can afford it, doesn’t mean they aren’t feeling the pinch

Hendrick Museum Reopens
Check out Rick Hendrick’s first Chevrolet. Watch a dissected Impala SS “Car of Tomorrow” being pieced together. See the cars and memorabilia of Casey Mears, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. These are just a few things visitors can do now that Hendrick Motorsports has reopened its museum. The 15,000-square-foot facility, which was closed the last four months for renovations, pays tribute to nearly 25 seasons of Hendrick Motorsports history and offers fans the latest in team-related apparel and merchandise. Admission to the museum is free of charge. Throughout the year, the museum will exhibit a rotating stable of famous Chevrolets — such as an original All-Star Racing entry, multiple Daytona 500 champions and the inaugural Brickyard 400 winner. Featured currently are cars driven by Geoff Bodine, Tim Richmond, Ken Schrader and Ricky Hendrick, among others. Visitors will be met at the entrance by the Monte Carlo SS that Johnson drove at Homestead-Miami Speedway to clinch the 2007 Sprint Cup Series title.

Paving way for more Darlington tradition
Historic track’s new surface brings questions as drivers break it in
You can repave the track but not the history or the tradition. At least that’s what many NASCAR drivers hope as they prepare for their first race at the newly repaved Darlington (S.C.) Raceway this weekend.
www.thatsracin.com/topstories/story/13778.html

Rivalry a good thing, but so is focus, says Earnhardt Jr.
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Armed with the circumstances of how each driver ended up at their current team and last week’s late-race run-in at Richmond, Va., Dale Earnhardt Jr. fully expects his race fans to embrace a rivalry with Kyle Busch.

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 MOUNTAIN DEW/AMP ENERGY/ NATIONAL GUARD IMPALA SS
WHY DO YOU REMAIN SO DIPLOMATIC WHEN OTHER GUYS MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF THEIR CAR AND BEAT ON KYLE BUSCH?
“Well, I don’t really know. I think it’s because we’re so busy and there are so many things going on. There are things that I’ve got to do during the week and my schedule is so busy that I just ain’t got time for it. I’m in a bad enough mood just with the grind of the season that I just don’t let those kinds of things get to me and get under my skin. I don’t want to make an issue worse for me. I don’t want to give anybody ammunition for me. We’ve got a lot of critics out there and a lot of supporters too, and I know they would have rather me have been a little more vocal and a little more angry about it. But there are just a lot of different reasons. I’ve got better things, more important things to worry about and if I let that get under my skin, everything I do this week is going to be a pain in my butt so it makes for a long week.”

SOME PEOPLE WANT TO COMPARE KYLE BUSCH TO YOUR DAD BASED ON DRIVING STYLE AND ATTITUDE. WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT ON THAT?
“On the race track, there may be some comparisons there. He’s fast. He’s running well. He’s quick. He’s aggressive. This is Dale Earnhardt in ’89 and earlier. Daddy quit doing that stuff after a while, you know. But that’s the way Dad raced and Kyle has that same style. He’s very aggressive.

WHAT ABOUT THE ATTITUDE?
“Personality-wise, they are polar opposites. Give me a break. You knew my dad better than that. Give my dad a little more credit than that.”

SPEED RACER-Sponsored NASCAR Chevy to Be Driven by Stanton Barrett on Opening Day of “Speed Racer,” Friday, May 9

This Friday, May 9, NASCAR driver Stanton Barrett will celebrate the opening of Warner Bros. Pictures’ new live-action family film “Speed Racer” in the #30 SKI Motorsports/Stanton Barrett Motorsports SPEED RACER Chevrolet at the NASCAR Nationwide Series in Darlington. Barrett’s car will sport a special paint scheme reflective of Speed Racer’s legendary Mach 5.
“I’m very excited about having ‘Speed Racer’ on my car,” said Barrett. “I grew up watching the show each week with my brother David, who coincidentally is working with ‘Speed Racer’ producer Joel Silver on the television series ‘Moonlight.’ I’ve always hoped to one day be just like Speed, and now, thanks to Warner Bros., I get to drive like a ‘demon on wheels’ during the Nationwide race this weekend.”

Barrett, one of auto racing’s rising stars, is one of only two drivers in NASCAR who owns a team. Barrett fields his racing enterprise through SKI Motorsports/SBM (Stanton Barrett Motorsports), Interush Racing and Grandstay.net.

Thanks, Ed B.

Grassroots Racing Focal Point For Tech Students
05-08-2008 | Team ASE Spotlight
Grassroots Racing Focal Point For Tech Students Students participating in ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician programs at community colleges across the country learn just about everything they need to be successful once they get to the professional workplace. At Linn State Technical College in Linn, MO, the program provides a little something extra. “Students in the program help me with my racecar,” said Jimmy Brandon, Department Chairperson of the Automotive Technology program at Linn State and the driver of ‘Rebel Rouser,’ a 1964 Dodge dragster. “Most of the students don’t have the money or resources to buy or build a racecar, so they really like working on this one. Anytime I have a project on the racecar, I don’t have any problem getting participation from the students.”
