American Red Cross Launches Campaign to Connect Fans With Blood Donations: The American Red Cross announced the launch of Red Cross Racing, a new national campaign to recruit NASCAR fans as blood donors and raise awareness of the need to give blood. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. Through the support of 3M and Roush Fenway Racing the #16 Ford will race this Sunday at the Aaron’s 499 in Talladega, Ala. in a full paint scheme featuring the Red Cross logo. The car will be driven by Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet member and blood donor Greg Biffle. Race fans will be able to join a Donor Rewards Program by visiting redcrossracing.com beginning on April 24. This new Web site makes it easy to schedule blood donation appointments online and offers frequent donors the chance to get points, which can be exchanged for Red Cross Racing gear, including caps, t-shirts, jackets and limited edition die-cast cars. Race fans can also join Red Cross Racing at one of the nine NASCAR races where a Red Cross trailer will be on the midway. All participants who sign up between April 24 and October 1 are automatically entered into a sweepstakes for an all-expense paid trip for two to the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Speedway on November 9, 2008. The Red Cross will be highly visible at NASCAR races, thanks to a nearly $2 million donation by 3M. The #16 Ford Fusion will also feature the full Red Cross paint scheme on November 9, 2008 during the Phoenix race. In both races Biffle will wear a Red Cross-branded fire suit. In addition, the Red Cross logo will be seen on the #16 Ford Fusion in eight other races this season: New Hampshire, Chicago, Michigan, Richmond (September), Kansas, Charlotte (October), Texas and Phoenix.(Red Cross PR)(4-22-2008)

Adrian Fernandez, on Juan Pablo Montoya: “Juan Pablo’s personality is just right for NASCAR. He’s so cold. Sometimes I feel like he’s not human. Before the race, maybe you are a little nervous. He’s not at all. He doesn’t have respect for anybody, in a good way. On the track, he doesn’t give a (bleep). That makes him unique.”

Wood to drive no. 21 Honey Buns Ford Fusion in Talladega

Harrisburg, NC. (April 21, 2008)-Jon Wood will make his 2008 Sprint Cup Series debut in the Wood Brothers Racing no. 21 Honey Buns Ford Fusion in the Aaron’s 499 at the famed Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, April 27th.

Since the race was not a scheduled event for Bill Elliott, the team felt that Jon was a logical choice given his experience in the Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series on superspeedways.

Jon has a busy schedule this week as he is also entered to drive the no. 21 Air Force Ford F-150 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at the Kansas Speedway on April 26th. The team is making every effort to make sure Jon participates in both events. An alternative driver is being considered to practice, qualify and possibly race the truck if arrangements cannot be made to get Jon to the Kansas Speedway.

To start the week, Wood Brothers Racing and Jon Wood will be conducting a two day test at Iowa Speedway this Tuesday April 22 and Wednesday April 23.

Crew Chief Mike Smith agrees that this week is an excellent opportunity for the team to gel and work together for the first time this year. He said, “With Jon’s experience level on superspeedways in other series, I’m very comfortable with him getting in the car this weekend. The test in Iowa will also help. It will give us a chance to work together as crew chief and driver, which we’ve never done before. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Mountains Challenge Team Dakar USA on Stage Two

Baia Mare, Romania – The second stage of the Central Europe Rally proved to be quite the challenge for Team Dakar USA. The mountainous tracks on the outskirts of Baia Mare proved to favor the four-wheel drive vehicles today. Recent snow storms left the tracks muddy in places and made the rocky course very slippery.

Approaching the stage the Hummer team conceded the disadvantage and vowed to fight back on the upcoming specials but for today and possibly tomorrow they will take their lumps. The day was to be comprised of two identical specials each 76km in length. After the first special Robby Gordon found himself 4:43 back from special winner Stephan Peterhansel. He posted the 11th fastest time. BJ Baldwin lost 8:14 and finished 15th on the special. After the motorbikes, cars and trucks grooved up the course the organizers decided to shorten the second special to just 34km.

“This was the first time the Hummers had seen anything like this. The tracks were really muddy, there was snow, slippery rocks and it was very tight. Obviously it suited the four-wheel drive cars. Really we just wanted to finish in one piece. We did have some navigation challenges. This is very different from what Andy is used too. R now we are behind and we are going to fight like hell to get back into this rally. But as it stands right now, with the stages being short like they are it’s going to be very difficult without help,” said Gordon. ”

The shortened special allowed Gordon to limit the damage on the second special. He finished just 39 seconds back of winner Al Attiyah, which secured a fourth place finish on the special. BJ Baldwin was not so lucky. A small rock managed to work its way up into the throttle cable housing and prevented Baldwin from getting full power. The freak occurrence cost Baldwin 6:22 and relegated him to a 30th place finish.

At the end of the day Robby Gordon is 7th in the overall classification, 4:03 back while Baldwin’s Vanguard Hummer is 18th overall, 22:17 back. Tomorrow’s stage will be a repeat of today’s events and then the rally returns to the site of the first stage, which was more suited for the Hummers.

Coverage of the Central Europe Rally can be seen in the United States on DirecTV. The half hour show will be aired twice – first at 7p.m. EST and then again at 12:30a.m. Additional rally coverage can also be found on robbygordon.com and robbysuprising.com where Team Dakar USA will have daily updates, the twitter micro blog feed, and videos.

Robby’s Uprising features Central Europe Rally Programming

In case you miss the Central Europe Rally race broadcast on DirecTV’s ‘The 101′ you can tune into robbysuprising.com and watch the rally unfold from Team Dakar USA’s perspective.

DirecTV’s channel 101 will air the programming from the 19th through the 26th of April. The half hour show will include the ASO world feed that includes action from the motorcycles, cars and trucks. Directly following you can catch up with the progress of the American team of Robby Gordon and BJ Baldwin as they compete in Hungary and Romania. The show airs two times daily – first at 7 p.m. EST and then again at 12:30a.m. Both racers are driving identically prepared Hummers on Toyo Tires.

National Day of Prayer Paint Scheme to Adorn Nemechek’s Chevy in Talladega

DENVER (April 21, 2008) — The No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet, driven by Joe Nemechek, will once again showcase a unique paint scheme at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, site of this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

For the third year in a row at the Talladega spring event, Furniture Row, the Denver-based company which owns the No. 78 Chevrolet, is devoting its entire space on the car to the National Day of Prayer.

The red, white and blue patriotic paint scheme will include the National Day of Prayer logo on the hood, the rear quarter panels, trunk-lid and the rear bumper (TV) panel of the No. 78 car.

“Using a car driven by Joe Nemechek, an accomplished driver who NASCAR fans recognize, is a fun and exciting way to promote the National Day of Prayer,” said Brian Toon, vice-chairman of the National Day of Prayer. “This event enables us to communicate with a vast audience and show people that there is a day set aside where our nation joins together and prays.”

“I am proud to drive the National Day of Prayer car this weekend,” said Nemechek. “This is something very special for Furniture Row and it’s an honor for me to be included in this annual observance.”

Recognizing that prayer has been and continues to be an integral part of the United States history, Congress established the National Day of Prayer in 1952. The observance is currently held on the first Thursday in May, when all Americans are encouraged to exercise their religious freedom by gathering publicly to worship and pray. Visit nationaldayofprayer.org to learn more.

Incredible Pizza Co. is racing ahead with its latest multistore franchise deal and getting some invaluable brand exposure in the process. The Springfield-based pizza parlor and family entertainment company announced March 31 that it had signed a 20-franchise deal with North Carolina investors Tony and Bryan Mullet. The deal is not the largest the company has signed – Houston-based French Investments Inc. plans to open 30 stores by 2018, while Mexican franchisee Gonzalo Barrutieta is opening 20 stores south of the border. But the deal with the Mullet brothers, who also own NASCAR racing team CJM Racing, may be Incredible Pizza’s most complicated. Per the agreement, Incredible Pizza owner Rick Barsness and partners are investors in CJM’s franchise locations, which carry an estimated total price tag of $100 million. The investors will take up to half of their profits from the stores and use the money to sponsor CJM’s NASCAR Nationwide Series vehicle, driven by Jason Keller. Incredible Pizza Co. also has a management deal to run the stores and a construction management agreement to build them. CJM, in return, has agreed to take half of its profits and donate them to the Incredible Pizza Charitable Foundation, which funds Christian ministries around the world.(Springfield, MO Business Journal)(4-21-2008)

Mobile, Ala. native Cale Gale will be making his fourth start this season for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) for the Aaron’s 312 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. Previously this season Gale scored a 23rd-place finish at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in the season opener, a 20th-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway and most recently a career-best finish of eighth at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway in his 14th career Nationwide Series start.“Obviously I want to perform well there. I want to go out and do the best I can and hopefully circumstances will be in our favor at the end. KHI won this race last year with Bobby (Labonte) and Tony (Stewart) finished second, making it a one-two finish for KHI. That’s more pressure on me because we are returning with only one car this time. Wally (Rogers, crew chief) has already told me he is ready for a win, so Talladega would be a great place to start.”(KHI)

Mike Skinner Diary: Toyota Pro/Celeb Finale
04-21-2008 | TruckSeries.com Report
Mike Skinner Diary: Toyota Pro/Celeb Finale NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series star and Red Bull Camry driver Mike Skinner is the defending champion of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race and he was back to defend his title again in ‘08. The race was ran in conjunction with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Indy car race and has helped raise more than $1.6 million for local children’s charities in Southern California. “The race today was really, really good. I got a great start and started catching the back of the celebrity field in the first three or four laps. I never really expected to catch the front of the field without a caution, so I was pretty surprised that we eventually made our way up there. It was kind of neat. Going in, the professionals were about three seconds a lap faster, so over a 10-lap race while going through traffic, I knew it was going to be tough to get up there.” - Mike Skinner
