Busch Makes It Three in a Row; Takes Nationwide Win South of the Border

by Thomas Chemris ~ April 21st, 2008. Filed under: Nationwide Series.

Kyle Busch made it three wins in a row in the NASCAR Nationwide series as he took the checkers in Mexico City, Mexico at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez.

Busch, who is the series lap leader, has been on fire as he won the last two series events came into Mexico, never having a top five finish on a road course.

Not being considered a road course ace, Busch was overlooked as a favorite despite qualifying sixth.

The eighty lap event at the 2.5 mile circuit is a strategy duel as team jockey to be in position to find the right time to stop for tires and fuel that allows them to finish the event without an additional stop. Several teams took various strategies as the rhythm of the race never seemed to appear as the caution flag waved multiple times for an endless parade of laps under yellow. Busch who stopped for fuel early in the event stayed on track and worked his way through the field to take the point just past the halfway mark. Busch held the top spot for five laps before he headed to the pits to make his final stop.

As the race cycled through what seemed an endless amount of caution laps Busch found himself second to Scott Pruett as the field restarted from the final caution.

Busch stuck to the back of Pruett’s car, and then it was just a matter of time as Busch got underneath Pruett in the esses to make the pass with nine circuits remaining.

Busch held the point and held off a hard charging Marcos Ambrose to mark the fourteenth win of his career.

“This was a pretty phenomenal job by these Joe Gibbs Guys”, said Busch as he exited the car.

Busch has been without a doubt the busiest driver in NASCAR. Since February of the year the Las Vegas native has competed in four Craftsman Truck Series Races to garnish two wins and currently lead the championship points. Nine Nationwide Series events, to claim three wins and hold second in the points, and eight Sprint Cup races to yield one win and again hold in second in the championship.

Busch is the unique position to pursue championships in all three major series. Realistically, this would be a logistically impossible; however, Busch has not ruled out or committed to a championship run outside the Sprint Cup. He could still pursue the top prize in either the Nationwide or Truck series. Realistically, sponsorship deals for several of the races would need to be in place before anything official could be announced. Busch does not avoid the topic, but does not indicate much beyond that it is being explored.

Busch was followed in by Australian Marcos Ambrose who a career day with his best finish in the series to date. Scott Pruett, Carl Edwards and Patrick Carpentier rounded out the top five.

Colin Braun, a nineteen year old developmental driver for Roush Fenway Racing was the Buzz of the garage as the rookie qualified on the pole. Braun who ran strong in the early going suffered a tire failure and finished thirty-third, four laps down.

Braun will continue to run selected events for the team throughout the 2008 season.

As is the case in any NASCAR road course event, the road course specialists were out in force. Most notable was Boris Said, driving for Rensi Motorsports. Said, always considered a favorite never seemed to get the handle on car, and was involved in a late race incident to finish behind the wall in thirty-fifth.

Several Mexican Nationals also competed with Adrian Fernandez gaining most of the spotlight. Fernandez, who was competing in Long Beach, California took over a Hendrick car that was qualified by David Green. Fernandez was working his way through the field when he became involved in a late race incident. The team managed to keep Fernandez on the lead lap to finish fifteenth.

Next week the series head to Talladega Alabama for the Aarons 312 where Bobby Labonte is the defending race winner.
