Hornish, Franchitti will not run Indy 500: Sprint Cup rookies Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr., the men who won the last two Indianapolis 500s, will not compete in the race next month. Their NASCAR team owners — Chip Ganassi for the #40 Dodge Franchitti drives and Roger Penske for the # 77 Dodge Hornish drives — both said the Indy 500 is not part of the plan this season. The two Cup rookies will concentrate on the Coca-Cola 600 Cup race that day (May 25) at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. Penske, who is traveling in Europe this week, called Rusty Wallace on Tuesday from England to tell him Hornish would not race at Indy this year. Penske wanted to end the speculation that David Stremme would replace Hornish in the Coca-Cola 600 so Hornish could race at Indy. The speculation about Hornish also brought rumors about Franchitti possibly returning to the Indy 500 next month to defend his victory from last season. But Ganassi made his feelings clear: “No way we’re doing that,” Ganassi said. Ganassi also said that Franchitti is totally committed to his move to NASCAR.(ESPN.com), see previous rumors about Hornish on my #77 Team News page.(4-18-2008) http://www.jayski.com/teams/77.htm

Fans To Decide One Driver’s Entry Into The Sprint All-Star Race: Sprint announced the return of the Sprint Fan Vote, a voting competition powered by fans to award one team a starting spot in the May 17 Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Voting began April 17 and closes at 7 p.m. EDT May 17. Race fans may vote multiple times. New this year, as a bonus to Sprint customers, votes placed on Sprint phones will count twice. Voting is available through the following channels:
*On Sprint phones text “NASCAR” to 7777 and follow the received directions (standard text messaging and data rates apply)
*At participating Sprint stores
*Trackside at the Sprint Experience
Past Fan Vote winners include Ken Schrader (2004), Martin Truex Jr. (2005), Kyle Petty (2006) and Kenny Wallace (2007).
To be eligible for the Sprint Fan Vote, drivers must have been in the top 50 in Sprint Cup Series driver point standings in 2007 or have attempted to qualify for a 2008 Sprint Cup Series race prior to March 10. The driver with the most votes who finishes the Sprint Showdown on the lead lap will transfer to the prestigious field. The Sprint Fan Vote winner will be announced following the completion of the Sprint Showdown. Tune in to SPEED May 17 at 7 p.m. EDT to see who will win the 2008 Sprint Fan Vote.(Sprint PR)(4-18-2008)

Marlin Running at Music City Motorplex: Sterling Marlin has no plans to compete for a Music City Motorplex Late Model points championship this season. He will race for a cause. Marlin said he will split his winnings from his six Motorplex races between Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University and the Nashville Rescue Mission. First place pays between $1,100 and $3,000, depending on the race. “My grandson was in (the children’s hospital) and they took really good care of him,” said Marlin, a Columbia resident and two-time Daytona 500 champ. “I wanted to try and take care of some kids and some people that have had misfortune. We eat well at Thanksgiving and Christmas and I know some of those people at the mission may not know where their next meal is coming from. I figured I’d try and help them out a little bit.” Marlin will race May 10, June 14, Aug. 8, Aug. 30, Sept. 20 and Oct. 11. Marlin also is racing a partial Sprint Cup schedule with Phoenix Racing. He will attempt to qualify for the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega next week and Richmond the following week.(Tennessean)(4-18-2008)

Nationwide Series’ Haulers Arrive in Mexico City; Sponsor, Entry List Updates

47 Nationwide Series haulers arrived in Mexico City at the Autodromos Rodriguez Hermanos Thursday, with the garage set to open for Corona 200 practice Friday morning. Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash reported that the teams will again qualify for Sunday’s race in a road-course format, with groups of six cars qualifying at the same time.

Balash also noted that Goodyear has brought rain tires to the event, given the increased chances of rain forecasted for the race weekend. Balash has stated that in the event of rain NASCAR will throw the caution flag, allowing teams to pit and change to rain tires. Teams will be allowed to change from rain tires at their own discretion.

Several changes have been made to the entry list. The No. 55, Means Racing’s second car was scheduled to appear with driver Mike Potter but elected not to make the trek south of the border. Also, Rafael Martinez will be taking Burney Lamar’s place behind the wheel of Baker-Curb Racing’s No. 37. Kenny Wallace, driver of the No. 28 Chevrolet for Jay Robinson Racing, signed on sponsor Phantom EFX for the Corona 200; Phantom will also sponsor the No. 28 at Montreal.

Nationwide Series Heads To Mexico City
The NASCAR Nationwide Series goes south of the border this weekend for its annual event in Mexico City, and ESPN will have live, flag-to-flag coverage Sunday, April 20, beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET with NASCAR Countdown. Three-time NASCAR champion crew chief Ray Evernham will make his first appearance of the season in the ESPN booth as analyst on the telecast, joined by fellow analyst Rusty Wallace, the 1989 NASCAR Cup Series champion, and lead announcer Dr. Jerry Punch. Haulers Arrive in Mexico City: All of the Nationwide Series haulers have arrived at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and the garage will open Friday at the track in preparation for Sunday’s Corona 200 race. For drivers who have been to the track before, it should be quite a familiar. There are no changes in the course configuration, and the series once again will use its road-course qualifying procedures, where they will go out in groups of six, Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said Thursday morning at the track. One thing that could be different is that there is more of a threat of a rain than when the Nationwide Series came in early March the last three years. There is a 30 percent chance of rain throughout the weekend, with high temperatures in the low 80s. Goodyear has brought rain tires, which were made about four years ago, to the track this weekend. Balash said if it were to rain during the race, NASCAR would throw a caution so teams could change to rain tires. It would then be their choice when to take them off.(SceneDaily.com)(4-17-2008)

Lofton a Good Bet at Prairie Meadows 250
NEWTON IA (4-18-08) – Justin Lofton returns to Iowa Speedway this weekend for the Prairie Meadows 250. With a great test only a few weeks ago, Lofton and his Eddie Sharp Racing team are anxious to get their No. 93 Lofton Cattle Dodge back on the 0.875-mile oval. No stranger to the west coast short tracks, Lofton is ready to rock and rub fenders for 250 laps with his fellow ARCA RE/MAX Series competitors.

Iowa Favorite Michael Annett Aiming for 3rd Consecutive Victory in Prairie Meadows 250
NEWTON IA (4-17-08) – When rookie racer Michael Annett made his ARCA RE/MAX Series (ARS) debut at Iowa Speedway in 2007, few people, at least from the ARS world, had much knowledge of the Des Moines, Iowa native. However, that changed in a hurry when the 21-year-old driver won the SIM Factory Pole Award and finished third in the race.

Annett’s been in the headlines ever since with back-to-back superspeedway victories at Talladega Superspeedway in 2007 and Daytona Int’l Speedway to start the season off in 2008.
