Filed under: Stock Car Gazette — Mike Irwin @ 6:14 AM Friday, April 4, 2008

If I was a duck, I’d be a very happy duck, what with all the rain we have had around here. Lake Irwin is growing quite nicely in the lower part of our back yard.

But enough splashing about… here’s the latest NASCAR racing news from this edition of the Stock Car Gazette.

Bonfire! These Are The Good Ol’ Days Of NASCAR
by: Lonnie Bernarde

Parity! They talked about it during the broadcast on Sunday. I believe its true and I like it. Though Nascar gets their share of criticism and I will admit, I’ve expressed my displeasure in one form or another. But I will also give credit where credit is due.

Michelin Develops New Tire (or Wheel)
Research & Advanced Innovation for Vehicle Designs (RAIVD) is a division within Michelin’s North American headquarters. Located deep within NASCAR country (Greenville, South Carolina) RAIVD has been continuing the development of a new tire technology called TWEEL. The Tweel (the name is a contraction of “tyre” and “wheel”) is an airless one-piece wheel-and-tyre combo with a rubber tread bonded to a deformable wheel hub by flexible spokes. It delivers pneumatic-like load-carrying capacity, ride comfort and resistance to road hazards but, as it has no pressurized air cavity, it cannot be punctured. The spokes are bonded to a reinforced rubber tread band that can be as specialized as today’s tires. By varying the thickness and size of the spokes, Michelin can generate a wide array of ride and handling qualities. Innovative is the word that best describes this major breakthrough in automotive technology, and the awards are coming in to support it. Time magazine selected the TWEEL as “One of the Most Amazing Inventions” and the Intermat innovation commission in Paris awarded it a Gold Medal for Innovation.

Charlie relocated to the Tar Heel State and helped Rob Moroso capture the NASCAR Grand National title in 1989 before working at the Kneisel Speed Shop in Pennsylvania from 1992-95 and serving a one-year stint with Team Freightliner owner Ray Bramall. Qualifying Rained Out; Harvick Starts from Pole: Persistent rain showers have washed out Nationwide Series qualifying for the fourth time this season. #33-Kevin Harvick will start from the pole. He will be followed by current driver points leader #2-Clint Bowyer, #60-Carl Edwards, #29-Jeff Burton, #99-David Reutimann, #20-Tony Stewart, #6-David Ragan, #22-Robby Gordon, #88-Brad Keselowski, and #5-Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The #0 team with Donnie Neuenberger withdrew so all drivers made the race. The lineup is posted on the Texas Race Page(4-3-2008) www.jayski.com/nationwide/2008/next/07texas.htm#lineup

Reutimann Paces Only Practice Session: Rain interrupted the first practice session at Texas Motor Speedway, forcing a delay and causing NASCAR to combine practice and Happy Hour. #99-David Reutimann was fastest in the session at Texas Motor Speedway with a top speed was of 184.716mph. He was followed by #2-Clint Bowyer, #22-Robby Gordon, #5-Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #66-Steve Wallace, #11-Jason Keller, #12-Sam Hornish, Jr., #40-Dario Franchitti, #20-Tony Stewart, and #60-Carl Edwards. There are 44 cars at the track. Slowest were #0-Donnie Neuenbeger, #89-Morgan Shepherd, and #84-Mike Harmon. Complete speeds are posted on the Texas Race Page.(4-3-2008) www.jayski.com/nationwide/2008/next/07texas.htm#practice

Bliss cites sponsorship issues in team change: Wearing a Miccosukee T-shirt in the garage area, #1-Mike Bliss was ready to begin driving for James Finch’s Phoenix Racing team that is ranked 22nd in owners points instead of the Fitz Motorsports team ranked eighth. Bliss is fifth in the Nationwide Series driver points, but says he felt like he had to make the move heading into the seventh race of the 35-race Nationwide Series schedule. The 2002 Craftsman Truck Series champion, Bliss had driven for Fitz in 23 races last year. The Fitz Motorsports car could still use sponsorship for about 10 races but team owner Armando Fitz has pledged to run the entire season.“It was a tough, tough decision because we were running good,” Bliss said. “It was a personal move for myself. I wasn’t too sure we were going to run all the races.(SceneDaily.com)(4-3-2008)

Paul Wolfe Joins Braun Racing: Paul Wolfe has left Fitz Motorsports to replace Stewart Cooper as crew chief of the #38 Braun Racing entry and driver Jason Leffler in the Nationwide Series. Eddie Buffington is replacing Wolfe as crew chief of the #22 Fitz Motorsports car, which will be driven by Robby Gordon this weekend. Cooper has now joined Petty Enterprises as an engineer. There is a possibility that Newt Moore, formerly of Brewco Motorsports and Phoenix Racing, will call the race Saturday. He is currently working for Robby Gordon Motorsports.(SceneDaily.com)(4-3-2008)

Paul Wolfe has left Fitz Motorsports to replace Stewart Cooper as crew chief of the No. 38 Braun Racing entry and driver Jason Leffler in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.Eddie Buffington is replacing Wolfe as crew chief of the No. 22 Fitz Motorsports car, which will be driven by Robby Gordon this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway after Mike Bliss left the team last week for the No. 1 Phoenix Racing ride.Cooper has now joined Petty Enterprises as an engineer. The crew chief musical chairs played out in the Nationwide Series off weekend, with Wolfe the highest profile crew chief to move. His team was eighth in owner points and he now joins Leffler, who is 10th in the driver standings while the team is 14th in the owner standings.“I don’t really get into all the details and I don’t want to make this a big deal,” Wolfe said Thursday prior to Nationwide Series practice. “… we were running good. There was other stuff. I just want to move on.“I feel like I can help out this program with Jason. He can win races and they’ve got the tools over here to do it.”Wolfe, a former development driver for Evernham Motorsports, had been with Fitz Motorsports the last couple of years.“I don’t want to come in there and try to turn things upside down from what they were doing,” Wolfe said. “It’s not far off from what Iwas doing. Everybody has a little different way of going about things.“I’ll work with what they’ve got and fine-tune a little bit.”Replacing Wolfe at Fitz Motorsports for the Texas race is Eddie Buffington, who has served in several capacities for the team, including most recently as car chief for the No. 36 car that had started the season. There is a possibility that Newt Moore, formerly of Brewco Motorsports and Phoenix Racing, will call the race Saturday. He is currently working for Robby Gordon Motorsports. The car Gordon is driving is the same car he drove at California for the team last year.“We should perform well, that’s what I expect,” Buffington said Thursday. “These guys are a good bunch of guys. They’re very smart. Paul trained them very well.”As far as Cooper, he said things were not working well with he and Leffler and the Petty Enterprises opportunity came along. Cooper said he was offered the chance to crew chief another car at Braun but opted to make the move.“Jason is a great driver and a great guy,” Cooper said Wednesday. “Sometimes the chemistry doesn’t work even though you’re running good. It doesn’t fit. Todd Braun is a fantastic car owner and [competition director] Todd Lohse is a great guy. They are the reason I moved to Charlotte was to work with those guys.“It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out. … I’ve known [Petty Executive Vice President] Robbie Loomis for a long time, I know what he’s trying to build at Petty Enterprises. Cup racing is ultimately where I want to be long-term. It fits perfect for me.”(Scene daily) (04-03-08)

Joe Gibbs Racing officials say Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Nationwide Series Toyota will be sponsored by DLP HDTV in this weekend’s O’Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. The sponsorship compliments DLP’s backing of J.J. Yeley’s No. 96 Sprint Cup Toyota and its associate sponsorship of Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Cup Toyota driven by Busch. JGR’s No. 18 Nationwide team has been dormant for two races because of a lack of sponsorship. Crew chief Jason Ratcliff has been traveling to races, assisting the team’s No. 20 entry.“What I really like about Jason being at the track in Atlanta and Nashville is that he gets a feeling of how to communicate with me and taking my feedback and making the changes that will improve the car when we are driver and crew chief again at Texas, Phoenix, Talladega, and several more during the rest of the season,” Busch said. “He’s here listening to how I describe what I feel in the car, and he and [No. 20 crew chief] Dave[Rogers] can talk back and forth on what adjustments to make.

Quinn assumes crew chief role at Wyler Racing: John Quinn has assumed the role of crew chief at Wyler Racing, effective immediately. George Church had started the season as crew chief for driver Terry Cook but left the team following the Martinsville race to pursue other opportunities. Quinn now assumes the crew chief role for the #60 Wyler.com Toyota heading into the next series race at Kansas Speedway on April 26. Quinn’s engineering expertise was put to use first as a shock specialist with several teams including DEI and Richard Childress Racing. He joined Roush in 2003 and was promoted to crew chief for Ricky Craven in 2005. He led Craven to one victory before leading Darnell to Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors in 2006. He and Darnell combined for one victory at Kansas. He joined Wyler Racing in the off season and served as team engineer and shock specialist.(Wyler Racing PR)(4-3-2008)

Braun stays busy; running Nationwide race in Mexico: Later this month, Colin Braun is off to Mexico City where he will drive in his third-career Nationwide Series race [Sunday, April 20th - Corona 200 at the Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City]. “I’ll be driving the #16 3M Ford in Mexico for my second Nationwide race of the season,” said Braun. “I’ve raced there before in the Grand Am cars, so I am really looking forward to going back. It will be the first time this year that we’re going to a track where I probably have more experience than some of the other Nationwide drivers.”(Roush Fenway PR)(4-3-2008)

Congrats to Hillman family: Germain Racing is proud to announce that general manager Mike Hillman Sr. is a grandfather again. Tuesday’s latest addition to the ranks of Hillman’s grandchildren brings to a pause the recent “grandbaby mania” that began last year. In 2007, each of Hillman Sr.’s three sons announced their wives were expecting children. Matt Hillman, who does not work at the race shop, headed up the recent wave of grandbabies when he and wife Brooke gave birth to their first son, Hayden Alexander, in October. Matt’s twin brother, Mark, who serves as truck chief for the #30 Lumber Liquidators Tundra at Germain Racing, along with his wife, Jessica, became the proud parents of daughter Kaylin Elizabeth on February 26th. Mike Hillman Jr., crew chief for the #30 Lumber Liquidators Tundra, and wife Jennifer completed the grandbaby-trifecta on Tuesday, April 1, introducing their third child, Mylee Caroline, to the Hillman ranks. Hillman Sr. and wife, Sandy , now have a half-dozen grandchildren, including Jake, Trey and Lily. Hillman Sr.’s daughter, Melanie, a student at UNC Charlotte, makes time away from studies to be sure she spoils her nieces and nephews.(Germain Racing PR)(4-3-2008)
