Special Edition Track Trash – The Awards Banquet
By: Racing Maniac

I am hardly anyone to report on the Awards Banquet. After all, I only saw Gordo, and parts of Jr., the blonde bimbo singer, and a few moments of Denny Hambone. Actually, I was channel hopping at the time, and in fact, I was forced not to watch it. Let me explain…….

Champion’s Week Closes
As NASCAR Champion’s Week came to a close in New York, the sport’s champions relished their final hours at one of the sport’s premier events, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Awards Ceremony at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel. Friday was a day of rest and reflection for NASCAR’s local and regional series champions, who attended the Ceremony as a reward for their accomplishments. The champions of all of NASCAR’s racing series were brought together to celebrate alongside NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. Prior to the Awards Ceremony, which featured live performances by singer/songwriter Jewel and comedian Jay Mohr, most of the champions took advantage of unseasonably warm weather to enjoy the sights and sounds of mid-town Manhattan. Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza and Central Park were popular stops – not to mention the world-class shopping on Fifth Avenue. There was even a marriage proposal offered – and accepted – among the group of champions. On Thursday evening, Gary Lewis of the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Northwest Series became engaged to girlfriend Jodi Hunt. It was truly a week to remember, or as NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series champion Mike Olsen said, “I don’t know what I’ll remember most.”

Roush To Speak At AARWBA Dinner
Jack Roush, one of the most successful and influential team owners in NASCAR history, will be the featured speaker at the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association’s 37th annual All-America Team dinner, Saturday, January 13, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis. AARWBA is the country’s oldest and largest organization of motorsports media professionals. The dinner honors the champion drivers from stock car, open-wheel, short track, drag and road racing and touring series, as elected by AARWBA members. The top vote-getter from the various classes will be announced that evening as winner of AARWBA’s No. 1 honor, the Jerry Titus Memorial Award.

Crew Chiefs Picked at Waltrip Racing
Michael Waltrip Racing plans to announce crew chiefs for its 2007 teams in the next couple of weeks, while over-the-wall crews will be finalized after that, the team announced on Friday. “Over the next week or so, we will announce our team rosters including crew chiefs,” said team owner Michael Waltrip, who has already begun the process of hiring employees. “By mid-January, we will be operating exclusively out of Waltrip Raceworld [formerly called Waltrip Racing World].”

“Have Dinner with Jimmie Johnson” Winners
Jimmie Johnson will have at least two more fans when he defends his title in the 2007 Allstate 400 at The Brickyard than he did when he won this year’s event. Georgia and Richard Pearcy of Altamont, Ill., scored a one-in-40,000-plus victory in Levi Strauss Signature’s “Have Dinner with Jimmie Johnson” sweepstakes. Of course, when the contest opened in June, the folks from Levi’s had no idea dinner with the 2006 Nextel Cup champion would be in the offing, along with race tickets to all three events of Ford Championship Weekend, plus “cold” access to Homestead-Miami Speedway’s pit area. And when the main event — dinner at a posh restaurant in Miami’s hip South Beach area — took place on the eve of the opening of practice for the recent Ford 400, the finale of the Chase for the Nextel Cup, it pointed out that sometimes the significance of an event is better measured by what it means to individuals, rather than its impact on the greater public. “To meet Jimmie Johnson and to sit down and have supper with him and actually talk to him — awesome,” Georgia said. “Nothing like this has ever happened to us. Everybody we’ve told is so excited. “Things like this don’t happen to people around here.”

Waltrip Raceworld on Track, crew chiefs to be announced soon: Michael Waltrip has a huge undertaking with Michael Waltrip Racing and Waltrip Raceworld (formerly called Waltrip Racing World). Waltrip does not foresee anything that will slow down progress, but if something does come up he”s prepared. “We mapped out a plan with a timeline to monitor our progress,” Waltrip said. “We are at a very good place. There have been many challenges and I know there will be more. I have been racing my whole life and it has always been about adapting to change. That mentality has helped our organization grow from a plan to a reality.” Finding quality crew members that have chemistry obviously plays a large part in the success of any racing organization and Michael Waltrip Racing”s competition department has been hiring daily. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, crew chiefs will be announced and over-the-wall teams will be assembled. “Over the next week or so, we will announce our team rosters including crew chiefs,” Waltrip said. “By mid-January, we will be operating exclusively out of Waltrip Raceworld (former movie theater). As Michael Waltrip Racing continues their hiring process and Waltrip Raceworld becomes a reality, SPEED Channel is holding auditions for its own reality show called SPEED Road Tour Challenge at Michael Waltrip Racing”s fabrication shop (19340 Liverpool Parkway, Cornelius, NC 28031) on December 9th and 10th. SPEED is looking for four NASCAR fans to travel to 13 races from Daytona to Charlotte. The four participants will compete for a prize package, which includes a 2007 Toyota Tundra and an offer to join the SPEED Road Tour crew for the remainder of the season.(MWR PR)(12-4-2006)

He is scheduled to share the #10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley with 2005 Rolex Series Daytona Prototype co-champions Max Angelelli and Wayne Taylor. Hornish will also be driving a Daytona Prototype for the very first time next week. He will share the #60 Flight Options/Net App Lexus Riley with his Penske Racing IndyCar teammate Helio Castroneves, South Florida resident Oswaldo Negri, and Mark Patterson. Cope back in the #74 in 2007: Derrike Cope, #74-McGlynn Racing and Sundance Vacations will now begin looking at their options to further the team’s productivity for next year. Cope adds, “I want to thank all of the crew for their hard work and dedication. They are all giving their time each week voluntarily, with the exception of [a few]. We accomplished a great deal more than people expected us to, although the latter portion of the year was a bit disappointing. For such a small team I personally am pleased with what we were able to make happen [in 2006].” The 2007 race season will bring along another year of hope for McGlynn Racing and Sundance Vacations. Derrike Cope concludes, “I am already looking forward to the start of the 2007 NASCAR season!”(PRweb.com)(12-4-2006)

The award will be presented at the AARWBA”s 37th All America Team Banquet in January, where Jack Roush will be giving the keynote address. The AARWBA committee, comprised of professional motor sports journalists and photographers, were given a list of organizations and people who met certain criteria for the award. Part of the criteria required acts of kindness of heroic proportion without regard to the consequences. Details and information about HANS Performance Products are available on the company”s website http://www.hansdevice.com or by calling 1-888-HANS-999 or 770-457-1046.(HANS PR) Sam Hornish Jr. has confirmed he will attend the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association”s 37th annual All-America Team dinner, Saturday, January 13, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis. BRAZIER DQed, ROGERS DECLARED SNOWBALL CHAMP
Top Two Finishers DQed In Post-Race Tech
Johnny Brazier crossed the line first in the 39th Annual Snowball Derby. He took all the photos on the front-stretch. He got all the accolades and the fans thought they saw the real winner celebrate.

However, a few hours later, Brazier and the second-place finisher of Bobby Gill found themselves disqualified following post-race tech inspection. Brazier’s weight issues ended up giving the win and the $20,000 top prize to third-place finisher Clay Rogers. Speed51.com will have a lot more on this story in the coming days.

Earnhardt, No. 13 ThorSport Team Part Ways
Kerry Earnhardt and ThorSport Racing have announced that they will part ways after the 2006 season. Earnhardt drove the No. 13 Chevrolet Silverado entry for ThorSport Racing throughout the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. “I want to thank ThorSport Racing for the opportunity they’ve given me to drive the No. 13 Silverado in the Craftsman Truck Series this year,” Earnhardt said. “I have truly enjoyed getting to know all the team members from ThorSport Racing. We had a young and aggressive group of rookies on the #13 team this year, including myself that accomplished many of the goals we set out at the beginning of the year. I have enjoyed racing full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this past year and know that I’m a better racer because of it. The competition is really tough in the Truck Series and I’ve had a lot of fun learning the ropes and being a full-time competitor. The No. 13 team and I had some really good races during the season that proved that we could be a strong team, although we had some really bad luck during a number of races which didn’t help us get the finishes we deserved.”
