Bonfire! The Move

by Lonnie Bernarde ~ March 8th, 2008. Filed under: Bonfire!.
Nice move by Jeffy to take himself out (fortunately) and at the same time spin Kenseth back a number of spots with only a few laps to go. How often does it happen when the driver who makes the mistake actually ends up in the tool shed while the one he kinda wrecks keeps going?

I don’t have any hard statistics on such a thing, but I believe it’s low. Though I was extremely worried when I saw how hard Gordon hit the wall, I did feel some great satisfaction (after I knew he was ok) when I realized that he would be done for the day since HE caused the trouble. Justice is served every once in a while, huh?

Then again this is a fantasy Nascar article. As you can probably tell, I have neither the 24 nor 17 on my team, otherwise I might have started off this article differently.

I could write about some other moves at Vegas, but most of them irk me as my fantasy team took a hard hit. I.e. when Bobby was having a good run in the top 10 and did or should I say didn’t do some things (maybe tires like everyone else) and fell like a rock toward the end. Or Jimmy Johnson’s lackadaisical attitude that they knew Las Vegas and didn’t do their homework for this year’s race.

Certain drivers of mine had a rough day because of their strategies, but they have good company as some people in BONFIRE also made some grave errors. Once again I will have to pick on my mother. You know what I’m going to say and you don’t even need a version of your own cracked crystal ball (CCB) to know that I am going to tell you-she picked up Waltrip again. Her musical Mikeys cost her every time this year and the city of sin was no different. She dropped Sorenson for the 55 resulting in an addition of 39 points to her Napa Camry deficient.

But not all BONFIRE or Nascar moves were bad. Though many Carl Edwards fans could say that the 99 crew’s “un”intentional mistake of some bolts or would it be “screws” loose was a bad deal. I think it turns out as a good thing for BONFIRE! With Osborne being suspended for the next six races, Chris Andrews now has the opportunity to sit at the helm as crew chief.

A couple of years ago Chris invited many members of BONFIRE to a treat that most Nascar fans could only dream about. He invited us to watch testing at Milwaukee in the pits, not in the stands, but right next to the cars, drivers and teams. Mr. Andrews gave my family an opportunity to meet and spend some quality time with not only his team, but also with a number of other drivers. My two boys, Brandon (now 8) and Bryson (now 6) still cherish that day consisting of autographs and attention that almost all the drivers gave them (except Kyle Busch-very poor Nascar representative).

Not that I want to get off on a tangent, but since I’m on the subject of that special day testing there are some wonderful people in the Nascar community. If you ever want to give some drivers real credit for being genuine and quality people take a look at Mayfield, Kurt Busch (yep, he was great-not like his bro), Sorenson, Mears, Stremme, Vickers, Jeffy (was ok, but he still blew the little guys off a while), Jimmy Johnson and Chad Knaus. Everyone of those guys took time out of their busy day testing to make the boys feel like one of their family and not just there to give an autograph and move on. Well except baby Busch and possibly Gordon (jury is still out on that one though).

Getting back to BONFIRE and moves that developed, I need to mention one of our rookies (Wayne) who dropped Waltrip, but was a little indecisive on whom to replace him (Vickers or Sorenson) with. He chose Reed and that turned out to be a nice move as the 41 car ended 18th and the 83 was 24th. Don’t get too excited with this move, as I will have to backtrack a number of years with Wayne and tell you that he decided a long time ago that Jeffy would be his favorite. I put that move in the same category as my Mother’s.

Wayne’s son Jordon made a questionable move during the draft by taking Kvapil. That turned out well with the 28 car getting a top ten, thus helping Jordon with a second place finish. He was topped only by Trish who got her first win ever!

Life is kinda funny as just last week I mentioned Trish not winning in BONFIRE yet. Then a few days later she WINS. Maybe she knows something about CCB, huh? With her win, it now KEEPS my sister in the record books until at least the second race in 2010 for non-winning. Two-time Champion Darryl is next in line for the dubious record. Speaking of the devil, he gets last! That’s rare for him, but he’s not the same ol’ Darryl like he used to be. Kinda like my favorite (43). It’s either age or the team.

Until after Hotlanta-Keep the fire burning!

That article was ok but I want to read more about Lonnie’s friend Craig who would have finish 1st if Gordon didn’t take out Kenseth, what terrible luck. I think Craig deserves better.

    Sincerely
    A Bonfire Fan
