NASCAR Hates Gordon
by: Daniel Schmittou
I’m talking about Robbie Gordon, of course, and not the “more hated by fans” Jeff Gordon.
Robbie has been in the Nascar penalty box soooo many times I’m certain he has his own engraved chair there waiting on his next arrival… which we know shouldn’t be too long. I’m sure not much dust gathers in that particular chair.

Will California ever really embrace NASCAR?
NASCAR just released its estimated attendance figure for the Craftsman Truck Series race in California today. According to the race report, there were 37,000 people here. I don’t know where they got that number, but the actual amount of fans in attendance was by far closer to 3,700 than 37,000. It’s tough to estimate these things, but I’m [...]

Several drivers say the track wasn’t ready for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race
After a weekend of almost constant rain at California Speedway, NASCAR was eager to get Sunday’s Sprint Cup Auto Club 500 in before more rain moved into the area. And although the track was dry, water was still seeping from underneath the track surface which ultimately ended up sending a few race cars into [...]

Edwards Wins At California
It was a long way from where it started to where it finally wound up. The Auto Club 500 wasn’t an auto race, it was a marathon. Not only for the drivers and crews but for track personnel, NASCAR employees, the fans and the media. The race was red-flagged twice and the second one lasted over night. It was finally resumed at 1:00 PM Eastern time, 24 hours after the original start time. On Monday the track was hotter and slicker than it had been on Sunday night and that changed the dynamics of setups on all the cars. Slicker usually means an advantage for guys that like that kind of track. Carl Edwards is one of those drivers, the slicker the better. Edwards battled with and then out-ran Jimmie Johnson to win his first ever Sprint Cup race at the newly named Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Johnson hung on for second. “It’s a good rebound from Daytona and we’ll roll on,” said Johnson. “I was too loose off the corners to do anything with Carl.”
The victory was the eighth of a 123 race career for Edwards. It also was the fourth straight win in the spring race at the speedway. Edwards joins his Roush Fenway Racing Ford teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth as winners at the 2-mile track.
Jeff Gordon, who looked like he was untouchable on Sunday night, lost the magic on Monday and finished third. “Carl Edwards was in another league. We’ve got some work to do to catch those guys,” said Gordon, who blew an engine on the final (yellow Flag) lap. Kyle Busch brought his Interstate Batteries Toyota home in the fourth spot while Matt Kenseth was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Las Vegas Speedway next Sunday March 2nd, 2008, for the UAW-Dodge 400. The race is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM / Eastern Time on Fox.

Force gets Glick Award: John Force, the winningest driver in the NHRA, was selected winner of the Justice Brothers Shav Glick Award on Sunday before the Auto Club 500. Force’s other three daughters accepted the award named after the late motor racing writer for The Times, a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame. The award recognizes Californians who have made distinguished contributions to motor sports. “Being nominated for an award with Shav’s name on it is an honor by itself,” Force said in a statement, “but to be with people like Robert Petersen, Chris Pook and Jimmie Johnson, the NASCAR champ, makes it even more special. I wish I could have been there myself. . . . It’ll go right in my museum. Fans and their ‘Circle of Friends’ to compete against the 2008 Daytona 500 Champion in the only race for fans
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The 2008 Daytona 500 Champion Ryan Newman and his No. 12 Alltel Dodge pit crew are sharing the thrill of winning a race with fans across the country. Today, Alltel Wireless, America’s largest network, providing coverage across the nation, announced the return of the Alltel “My Circle 500” sweepstakes, a national text-to-win promotion that puts race fans in the driver’s seat for a chance to win a grand prize of up to $500,000.
Now until May 3, fans can enter the Alltel “My Circle 500” by texting RACE to 38229 or by logging onto www.alltelracing.com. Ten finalists will be randomly chosen among all entries and will become eligible for the sweepstakes’ grand prize of up to $500,000.
“Alltel Wireless is committed to bringing race fans closer to the action and is thrilled to bring back the popular ‘My Circle 500’ promotion,” said Samira Zebian, director sponsorship marketing for Alltel. “We’re giving 10 lucky finalists the chance to pick their own pit crew for a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be the stars on the track and in the pits as they compete against the championship Daytona 500 team.”
The 10 sweepstakes finalists and their ‘Circle of Friends’ will win an all-expense-paid trip to Charlotte, N.C., May 23-26 to compete in the second annual Alltel “My Circle 500.” The finalists will also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Penske Racing Shop and train like the pros with the No. 12 Alltel Team before going head-to-head in an ultimate go-kart and pit crew challenge.
On race day, the 10 finalists will get in the driver’s seat and take one lap around the go-kart track. Then, it’s up to their ‘Circle of Friends’ to change four tires on the No. 12 Alltel Dodge. The fastest team will be declared the winner and take home at least $200,000. The champions will receive an additional $300,000 if they beat the time of 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman and the Alltel pit crew – increasing the grand prize purse to $500,000.
“There is nothing that compares to the rush of winning a big race,” said Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge. “I am really excited to help bring this experience straight to race fans and give them a chance to feel what it was like to win the Daytona 500.”
The promotion supports Alltel’s exclusive “My Circle” calling feature, which gives customers the freedom to choose who they call for free – any 5, 10 or 20 numbers on any network. For more information about the Alltel “My Circle 500,” please visit www.alltelracing.com.

Busch Puts Three-Peat in Play with Cali Victory
02-23-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
Last weekend at Daytona International Speedway, Kyle Busch scored top-five finishes in all three of NASCAR’s top series, but never once reached victory lane. He rectified that situation in short order Saturday afternoon at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California, where he scored a dominating triumph in the San Bernardino 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Race. Busch led 51 of 100 laps in his Billy Ballew-owned San Bernardino County Toyota Tundra to cruise to victory ahead of the Lumber Liquidators Toyota of Todd Bodine and Johnny Benson, who charged from the back of the 35-truck field to score an impressive third place in his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra. Rounding out the top five were Terry Cook’s Wyler.com Toyota and defending series champion Ron Hornaday, Jr. in the Camping World Chevrolet. Toyotas have now swept the top four finishing positions in the first two events on the 25-race NCTS schedule. The top three finishers in Southern California Saturday also finished in the top three at Daytona a week earlier, when Bodine beat Busch and Benson. This time, though, it was all Busch, who scored the seventh NCTS victory of his career and made it look easy. “Here’s the start, hopefully, to a three-peat this weekend,” said Busch, who will race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race Saturday night and the Sprint Cup event Sunday.
