Jamie McMurray Selected For Jury Duty: Jamie McMurray, driver of the No. 26 Crown Royal® / IRWIN Tools Ford Fusion will not be present at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway Media Tour this afternoon. It’s not because McMurray is testing a racecar, or at a sponsor appearance, but serving his civic duty at the Iredell County Courthouse. “I can’t believe that I’m going to miss the media tour this year,” said McMurray. “Instead of being the driver of the No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion, I’m Juror No. 7 at the Iredell County Courthouse, after being selected for jury duty earlier this week. So rather than joining my teammates at Roush Fenway Racing this afternoon, I’ll be at the courthouse serving my civic duty. “I’m looking forward to returning to Daytona in a couple weeks and hope to catch up with all the media when I get there. We have some really exciting things coming up with both Crown Royal and IRWIN Industrial Tools. The No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion will have a new look when we return to Daytona - we’re running the Cask No. 16 paint scheme on it. It’s a great looking car that I hope we can return to Victory Lane for Crown Royal.” The new paint scheme is intended to celebrate the recent unveiling of Crown Royal Cask No. 16*, a special blend of Crown Royal whisky, which is finished in rare Cognac casks. - Roush Fenway Racing, Press Release

Stewart Doesn’t Want To Talk About Contract Extension
Tony Stewart, who has spent his entire NASCAR Cup Series career at Joe Gibbs Racing, says he is in no rush to begin talks regarding a contract extension with the successful racing operation. “Right now I just want to get started with this year,” Stewart said Tuesday. “I’m really not concerned about the end of ‘09 right now because we’ve still got to get through ‘08. Obviously, it’s a topic with the team here, and they want to get it taken care of, but right now I want to see how the beginning of this year goes. Get halfway through the season before we even worry about talking about it again.” Stewart’s contract ends after the 2009 season. Since moving into Cup at JGR in 1999, he has won two Cup titles (2002, 2005) and 32 races. He finished sixth a year ago after climbing as high as second in points following the second event in the Chase For The Nextel Cup. A change in manufacturer - the team will field Toyotas in 2008 after a long, successful stint with General Motors products - is of a more pressing concern to the 36-year-old Stewart.

Busch To Write For FOX Sports
Kurt Busch, 2004 NASCAR Sprint Series champion and a 17-time winner at the top level of stock car racing, has joined the list of FOXSports.com’s “Exclusive Writers” covering the 2008 schedule. Busch, who is among only 12 drivers to have claimed victories and poles in all three of NASCAR’s top series, will offer his unique perspective on his Pat Tryson-led Miller Lite Dodge Team and also his point of view on all the hot topics in the sport.

McDonald’s Returns To NASCAR
McDonald’s will make its return to NASCAR’s Cup series as one of three primary sponsors for Gillett Evernham Motorsports’ No. 19 Dodge of Elliott Sadler this season. McDonald’s, Best Buy and Stanley Tools were announced as company’s sharing sponsorship on the car Tuesday. According to a report on Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily today, Best Buy is expected to be on the car for 15 races, while Stanley will have 13 and McDonald’s eight, although those numbers are still subject to change. McDonald’s has not been a primary sponsor on a Sprint Cup car since 2000, when it sponsored Bill Elliott, and its last Cup win came in 1994 with Driver Jimmy Spencer.

Sprint Cup Series teams coming to test at Las Vegas: Race fans are invited to watch the cars and stars of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Monday and Tuesday as Las Vegas Motor Speedway conducts the annual NASCAR Preseason Thunder Las Vegas test session. The grandstands will be open to the public and fans are invited to watch their favorite drivers test the new Car of Tomorrow on the high banks of LVMS. The so-called Car of Tomorrow competed at select tracks in 2007 but will be used at all tracks in 2008. The Car of Tomorrow never has been raced at LVMS. LVMS’ grandstands will be open to the public from 9am-5pm during the Jan. 28-29 NASCAR Preseason Thunder Las Vegas. The Nationwide Series will test at LVMS Jan. 30-31. Tickets for the Feb. 29-March 2 NASCAR Weekend - featuring the UAW-Dodge 400 for the Sprint Cup Series and the Nationwide Series Sam’s Town 300 sale by calling (800) 644-4444 or visiting www.LVMS.com. New car chief for #43: Long time Yates Racing employee [car chief, crew chief, mechanic], Ray Fox Jr., is now the car chief for the #43 Cheerios Dodge for Petty Enterprises and driver Bobby Labonte. So Fox is working in the same building as he worked in last year since Petty Enterprises moved into the old Yates Racing shop over the ‘off season’.(SPEED’s coverage of the Media Tour)(1-25-2008)

Andretti still looking for 2008 ride: John Andretti says he is looking for a ride for 2008 and won’t totally rule out a return to #49 BAM Racing in the future. Andretti drove 15 Cup races last year, including 14 for BAM and had been slated to drive for the team until a couple of weeks ago when the team put Ken Schrader in the driver’s seat for the season-opening Daytona 500. For now, the only thing solid for Andretti is this weekend, where he will drive in the Rolex 24 At Daytona for Indianapolis Motor Speedway/Indy Racing League CEO Tony George, who will be one of Andretti’s teammates along with Anthony Foyt IV and others. “I think the sponsorship [at BAM] didn’t come through like they had hoped - they’re still working on it,” Andretti said Thursday in the Daytona garage. “That’s all I really know. … I’m out looking and talking.” Andretti said he anticipates participating in the Las Vegas test Monday and Tuesday if he can finalize a deal with a Cup team. Andretti wouldn’t confirm which team he would test with, although one possibility would be Front Row Motorsports, which he drove for last year. He also said he has talked to teams in other NASCAR series. He also is seeking an Indianapolis 500 ride. “I probably am going to do a few races in the truck series, and then we’ll see,” said Andretti, who has 355 career Cup starts. “Everything happened so late [at BAM]; it happened after the new year. I guess I thought I was going to be doing that, so [now] I’ve got to change course.” Andretti didn’t rule out a return to BAM, which hasn’t named a driver for anything past the opening race.(sceneDaily.com)(1-25-2008)

Ford commits to NASCAR: Ford isn’t giving up on NASCAR. After a dismal 2007 season that saw the manufacturer win only seven Nextel Cup races - to Chevrolet’s 26 - Ford officials made a point Thursday to show their commitment to the newly named Sprint Cup. Edsel Ford II, a member of Ford’s board of directors and the great-grandson of Henry Ford, visited Roush Fenway Racing’s shop Thursday during the final day of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Media Tour. “There’s been a lot of talk in the Ford Motor Company in the media in the past year, much of it negative,” Ford said. “People have wanted to write us off, to say we couldn’t compete in the marketplace or on the race track. I’m here to tell you one thing today: don’t underestimate our resolve.”(Canadian Press)(1-25-2008)

Fox announces 2008 Cup broadcast schedule: As Fox Sports prepares to begin its eighth year of NASCAR coverage, the network revs its engine with the unveiling of 2008 NASCAR on Fox broadcast schedule. Prior to exclusive, live coverage of the 50th Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 17, Fox Sports hits the gas on its coverage with night racing from Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 9 (8:00pm/et) with The Budweiser Shootout. This 70-lap exhibition pits last season’s Sprint Cup pole winners and past champions in an all-out “sprint” for the checkered flag. Mike Joy, with almost 40 years in racing, returns as race announcer, and is joined by NASCAR racing legend Darrell Waltrip and former champion crew chief Larry McReynolds, who return to provide race analysis for all NASCAR on Fox events. Prerace coverage is again hosted by Chris Myers with analyst Jeff Hammond, and returning to cover pit road are reporters Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum. In all, Fox Sports airs 13 Sprint Cup points races, highlighted by races from Las Vegas on Sunday, March 2; Texas on Sunday, April 6; Talladega on Sunday, April 27; Charlotte on Sunday, May 25 from Lowe’s Motor Speedway and the NASCAR on Fox season finale from Dover on Sunday, June 1. In addition to its Sprint Cup coverage, Fox Sports presents two live Craftsman Truck Series races: Saturday, Feb. 23 from California Speedway and Saturday, March 29 from Martinsville Speedway.(Fox PR)(1-25-2008)

Wednesday night, sitting on a stage with racing royalty, 23-year-old Michael McDowell heard the words he thought were only audible in his dreams as Michael Waltrip announced his organization’s 2008 Sprint Cup Series driver lineup. Waltrip officially revealed that the Arizona native will drive the #00 Toyota Camry for Michael Waltrip Racing, beginning on March 30th at Martinsville Speedway, joining MWR’s driver lineup of Waltrip, Dale Jarrett and David Reutimann. Reutimann will start the season in the #00 Toyota Camry while Jarrett finishes out his career in the #44 UPS Toyota Camry, running the first five races on the schedule. Jarrett will turn the #44 UPS ride over to Reutimann and McDowell will fill the seat vacated in the #00 by Reutimann starting at Martinsville. McDowell, a four-time race winner, nine-time pole-sitter and Rookie of the Year in the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series, has been sharpening and showcasing his skills with extensive testing in preparations to drive the #00 Toyota Camry. McDowell will take into account everything he has learned from testing as he begins to write his first chapter in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with Waltrip’s guidance. McDowell is extremely focused and also serious about being a 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender joining a formidable class, which includes Dario Franchitti, Regan Smith, Sam Hornish Jr., Patrick Carpentier and Jacques Villeneuve. Before making his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut, McDowell will run the Spirit of Daytona entry during the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway with Guy Cosmo and Marc Camirand. He is also scheduled to drive the #00 Toyota Camry in the Nationwide Series Camping World 300 at the 2.5-mile tri-oval.(MWR PR)(1-25-2008)

some NASCAR drivers to run Rolex 24 at Daytona: quite a few drivers with NASCAR ties [ran a race in Cup, Nationwide, Trucks, track owner] will be running the Rolex 24 at Daytona at Daytona International Speedway. Nationwide Insurance Gears up for 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series
New Sponsor Aims to Take Series to the Next Level with Fan-Friendly Initiatives

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nationwide Insurance today unveiled key new initiatives that will be launched to enhance the experience of the NASCAR Nationwide Series for fans, drivers and teams.

“We know NASCAR fans are the most passionate and loyal in sports and we’re committed to taking the NASCAR Nationwide Series experience to the next level for them,” said John Aman, strategic sponsorship officer for Nationwide Insurance. “The NASCAR Nationwide Series gives fans an opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds – today’s stars and the next generation of great NASCAR drivers.”

New initiatives include:

The Up to Speed Challenge, an exciting new “fantasy league” experience in partnership with ESPN, not previously available for the series.
Nationwide Insurance will provide the largest sponsor contribution to the NASCAR Nationwide Series points fund in series history.

The Up to Speed Challenge

Nationwide Insurance will partner with ESPN to bring fans ‘Up to Speed’ on the latest racing action. The Nationwide/ESPN Up to Speed Challenge, is an exciting new online fantasy challenge that will keep fans in the driver ’s seat for all the latest NASCAR Nationwide Series action.

In this season-long interactive contest, fans will be asked to pick the winning driver in a series of speed categories. The fan with the most points at the end of the season will win a $100,000 grand prize. Weekly winners may get some of the best seats at the track or autographed merchandise.

If fans think they have the smarts and the speed, they will be able to log onto ESPN.com to put their skills to test. If fans are really confident, then they’ll place a higher “insurance value ” on a pick for a chance to earn additional points.

“This is the first time an interactive fantasy experience of this kind will be available for fans of this series,” said John Aman. “We hope this will bring the series to life in a whole new way as fans pit their racing knowledge against others across the country. ”

Look for more information on how you can get ‘Up To Speed’ as we approach the NASCAR Nationwide Series Season. Additional details and complete official rules will be available at ESPN.com soon.

Points Fund Increase

Nationwide Insurance will provide the largest sponsor contribution to the NASCAR Nationwide Series points fund in series history.

“We hope that this increased financial incentive will create a win-win for drivers and fans,” said Aman. “Drivers will have more to drive for and as the competition increases, so will the excitement for fans. ”

This information was shared this morning at a breakfast hosted by Nationwide Insurance as part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Media Tour sponsored by Lowes Motor Speedway.

Riley – D’Hondt Motorsports Dissolved?: UPDATE After much fanfare, the partnership between Bill Riley and former Yates Racing general manager Eddie D’Hondt is no more. The two announced goals to form an ambitious Cup and Busch program back in August, 2006, aligning themselves with Toyota. But sponsorship never materialized, and the team only made one Nextel Cup race throughout its existence; Marc Goossens finished 38th last June at Infineon Raceway. The Busch program appeared in better shape, with veteran David Green driving a handful of races; however, he and development driver Bobby Santos never could drudge up the financial support to go with them. In half-a-dozen events, their highest finish was 11th with Green at Nashville. While that team has dissolved, Eddie D’Hondt supposedly still plans to remain in the ownership business – he hopes to run some Busch and ARCA races in 2008 under the D’Hondt Motorsports banner.(Fronstretch.com Newsletter)(12-17-2007)
UPDATE: Eddie D’Hondt announced that his team will field Toyota Camry’s in a limited ARCA effort out of his new shop located in Lakeside Business Park - Mooresville, NC. Piloting the #19 D’Hondt Motorsports entry in the upcoming February 9 Daytona ARCA event will be driver, Jack Bailey. Under the banner of D’Hondt Motorsports, LLC, Bailey will also pilot the # 19 Toyota Camry at, Pocono, Michigan, and Talladega. As the season progresses, there is a strong possibility of additional ARCA races for Bailey, as well as, other drivers competing in DMS cars in both the ARCA Series and some selected Nationwide Series events.(D’Hondt Motorsports PR)(1-24-2008)

Darnell to Run 6 Nationwide Races: Craftsman Truck Series driver Erik Darnell said Thursday he will run six Nationwide Series races this season for Roush Fenway Racing, making his Nationwide debut at Mexico City on April 20. Darnell will drive Roush Fenway’s #17 Ford, normally driven by Matt Kenseth, in the Mexico road race. His other races in the Nationwide car are scheduled to be at O’Reilly Raceway Park, the Milwaukee Mile, Gateway, Daytona in July and Montreal.(SceneDaily.com)(1-24-2008)

Rule changes hot topic at Atlanta test: There were several hot topics during the January 22-23 [Atlanta] test, none caused a bigger stir than recent rule changes for the Craftsman Trucks.
*Approved Spacer - New for 2008; NASCAR has implemented a cone-shaped spacer that sits between the intake manifold and carburetor, limiting air flow into the engine and resulting in a loss of approximately 60 horsepower. Both drivers and crew chiefs at the AMS test all agreed the recent addition has sent teams scrambling for more power. Hard Tires and Low Gears - It is estimated that the use of the approved spacer along with a harder Goodyear tire and a NASCAR mandated lower rear end gear ratio will create up to an 80 horsepower drop. These changes could help most internal parts of an engine last longer than one race, possibly saving teams hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
* Smaller Fuel Cells and Extra Tires Mean More Pit Stops - The Craftsman Truck Series will be using a smaller, 18-gallon fuel cell for the 2008 season. The smaller fuel cell will result in more pit stops and NASCAR has allowed teams an extra set of tires to help with the added stops. “The smaller cells and extra set of tires could make things a little dicey there at the end,” [Rick] Wren said smiling. “If a caution comes out at the end, which is likely to happen at AMS, everyone is going to have new tires and be bunched up. If that happens, watch out because it’s is going to be a show.”(Atlanta Motor Speedway PR)(1-24-2008)

Kentucky race date changing? Hearing that the date for the Built Ford Tough 225 presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers race at Kentucky Speedway has been changed from July 12 to July 19, 2008 at 7:15pm local time.(1-24-2008)

Darnell & Braun to get seat time in Nationwide Series: UPDATE: Darnell to drive 6 races: CitiFinancial has announced it will be the primary sponsor on a variety of Roush Fenway Racing entries in all 35 Nationwide Series events in 2008. Biffle, Kenseth, McMurray, Erik Darnell, Colin Braun, and 2007 series champion Carl Edwards will split seat time in the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion - which will rotate among the Roush Fenway # 16, 17, and 60 Fords throughout the season. In addition to displaying the CitiFinancial logo on the quarter-panels, the Citi logo will adorn the hood.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(1-18-2007)
UPDATE: Craftsman Truck Series driver Erik Darnell said Thursday he will run six Nationwide Series races this season for Roush Fenway Racing, making his Nationwide debut at Mexico City on April 20. Darnell will drive Roush Fenway’s #17 Ford, normally driven by Matt Kenseth, in the Mexico road race. Darnell tested both cars at Daytona Int’l Speedway recently. His other races in the Nationwide car are scheduled to be at O’Reilly Raceway Park, the Milwaukee Mile, Gateway International Raceway, Daytona International Speedway in July and Montreal.(SceneDaily.com)(1-24-2008)

Determined Mitchell Prepares for 08 Season
Retirement Not in Plans as 65th Birthday Draws Near….
FAYETTEVILLE, TN (1-24-08) - Veteran ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Tim Mitchell could not be faulted if he decided to slow down. After all, he will be celebrating his 65th birthday on April 2nd. Instead, Mitchell is preparing for another season driving the #06 for Wayne Peterson Motorsports. Despite finishing in the top-20 in the series standings six of the last seven seasons, Mitchell believes he has the potential to move higher in the standings this season.

“We have a better engine program now, and I think we are better prepared heading into the season than we have been in past years,” said Mitchell about the upcoming season.

The consistency displayed by Mitchell is remarkable considering his team has competed without financial support from a primary sponsor. A small budget limits the monies Mitchell’s team can spend on equipment and testing, but they have been able to cope with this disadvantage and compete with dogged determination. Mitchell keeps his perspective about racing without major financial support.

Carter Sets Sights on Daytona; Clement’s 46 Car Race-Ready

DAYTONA BEACH FL (1-23-08) - When the #46 Ford rolls off at Daytona, it may look much the same as it did in years past, but in reality, much has changed inside the Larry Clement-owned camp.

For one, the famous ARCA RE/MAX Series machine will be without its longtime occupant - nine-time champion Frank Kimmel after he announced he was forming his own team for 2008.

Clement will still be the car owner however, but the car will have a new cast of characters in and around it in 2008, most notably, a new driver.

That new driver is Denver, North Carolina racer Matt Carter, son of longtime NASCAR Cup crew chief/car owner Travis Carter. And if the stars line-up just right, Carter hopes to make a full run at the ARCA RE/MAX Series in 2008.

Daytona ARCA History Rock-Solid From ‘64 Through The Seasons

DAYTONA BEACH FL (1-22-08) - In 1964, the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the year closed at 874; the average cost of a new home was $13,050; gas was 30 cents per gallon; a ticket to the movies was $1.25; Dr. Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize; US Congress authorized the war against N. Vietnam; the first Ford Mustang was manufactured; the Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show; and the ARCA RE/MAX Series, already 12 years old, debuted at Daytona Int’l Speedway marking its first-ever superspeedway appearance. And the rest is history.

The countdown to the 45th annual ARCA 200 at Daytona is undeniably on. In just over 18 days, the ARCA RE/MAX Series will kick off Speedweeks 2008. As entries continue to pour in, the anticipation runs high as the most competitive field in series history is expected to assemble at the “World Center of Racing”, all hoping to add their names to the prestigious and impressive list of winners.
